I MESSENGER Cheryl Smith, Publisher Established 2011
The week began with the celebration of life for Fritzi Pikes Woods. A dynamic woman who I had the pleasure of meeting about 15 years ago, Fritzi was president and chief executive officer of Women’s Foodservice Forum. I have always admired her intellect, wisdom, insight and compassion. Another dear friend, Lawrence Young, who worked with her at the Dallas Morning News, had nothing but praise for Fritzi -- and with good reason, and like so many others. When I needed sound business advice, I reached out to Fritzi because I knew she would be responsive, honest and helpful. I wasn’t disappointed. Fritzi made time to provide me with important information to assist in my endeavors and we also shared thoughts on how we could work together in the future. She was such a source of support and inspiration to many. Whether she was taking care of business at the Morning News, attending a Dallas Mavs game with her family, speaking to students at area schools, attending NABJ meetings/conventions, or when we bumped into one another in the nation’s capital, I saw that engagingly beautiful smile that I will always remember. I was saddened to hear about her death and wish we had time to follow through on some projects. I salute and celebrate her life, such a wonderful life it was. Now, I had not known Mrs. Evelyn Lowery that long but she left an indelible mark on me. Sure I had met her husband, Joseph, several times before and his name was known across this country and around the world, long before he gave the benediction at President Barack Obama’s first inauguration. But to meet Mrs. Lowery was an absolute honor. Mrs. Lowery and I had a great visit when she traveled to Dallas with her husband last year, campaigning for Congressional candidate Domingo Garcia. We talked at length about the civil rights struggle and the role of women, like herself, Dr. Dorothy Irene Height and Amelia Boynton Robinson. Of course we had our Delta/AKA moment, talking about the two great organizations and members we both new. Later Mrs. Lowery and I met up again in Atlanta during the National Conference of Black Mayors Convention. There were a number of SCLC women around who sang her praises as they talked about her many contributions, like founding SCLC W.O.M.E.N (Women’s Organizational Movement for Equality Now), recognizing civil rights icons and addressing many societal ills. It was heartwarming to see the Lowery’s together. After over 60 years of marriage, the love and respect was genuine and beautiful. Both of these ladies were much more than just wives and mothers, they were the epitome of womanhood! They were real role models who led lives worth emulating!

AAA Texas:Â As seasons change drivers benefit from falling gas prices
“While we are enjoying a break at the gas pumps heading into fall, we encourage drivers to continue to keep fuel eďŹƒciency on their minds to save even more money on their fuel budgets,â€? said AAA Texas/New Mexico Representative Doug Shupe. “Here in Texas, we’re paying about $45 to full up the typical 14-gallon size fuel tank.â€? (Irving, TX) – The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel is now $3.20, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is eight cents less than last week and 39 cents less than one year ago. The average in the Lone Star State is also 23 cents less than the national average of $3.43. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in Amarillo and Austin are paying the most at $3.24, and drivers in Ft. Worth are paying the least at $3.15. Drivers in every state and the District of Columbia are paying less for gasoline than one year ago, however the size of the year-over-year discount varies considerably. Barring a hurricane or other unexpected disruption to gasoline production and distribution, analysts say retail prices may continue to move lower in the coming months, as suďŹƒcient supplies, flat demand and cheaper winter-blend gasoline mean motorists are likely to pay less to fill their tanks.

The exchange will be operated by federal officials, given that Texas Governor Rick Perry has refused to establish one because of his opposition to legislation that is designed to provide coverage to the nearly 30 million uninsured Americans. The exchange will not act as an insurance company. It will, however, decide which insurance companies participate in the plan. It will seek to maximize the number of people who enroll. Additionally, it will promote transparency among insurers and promote fairness for consumers. In August the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded nearly $11 million to nonprofits in Texas to hire “navigators” who will help uninsured Texans understand the various options that will be available in the exchange. The exchange concept is based on the model used in Massachusetts called the Health Connector, which assists people and small businesses that are searching for affordable insurance. The law was enacted in 2006 when former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was Governor. Nearly 300,000 previously uninsured people now have insurance because of the legislation. In fact, Massachusetts has the lowest percentage of uninsured people in the entire nation. The Affordable Care Act and the exchanges will bring about vitally necessary changes in our state. As your representative in Congress who fought hard to enact this sensible piece of legislation, I urge you to spread the word about the exchanges through your churches, neighborhood organizations, and networks so that all of our citizens can have the peace of mind that comes with having health insurance for themselves and their families.

Turning a hobby into a business By: Akilah C. Thompson News Flash! You do not have to spend the rest of your life working in a cubicle from nine to five every day. Neither do you have to settle for working in a miserable profession that barely pays the bills. Have you ever thought about turning your passions into a business? Is there something you enjoy doing so much you currently do it for free? Have you ever thought about how much income you could earn from your hobbies? Passion is one of the key ingredients to becoming a successful entrepreneur! When we are passionate about something , we find enjoyment in sharing our talents with others. So, why should we stop there when we can start making money doing what we enjoy? Let¹s explore what it will take to turn your hobby into a business. With the appropriate planning and an entrepreneurial mindset, you can be on your way to starting a successful business with passion as your foundation. Tip One: Save! Save! And Save! Before you decide to leave a corporate career or any job to start your own business, be sure to save at least 12 to 18 months of salary. As an entrepreneur, the checks will stop coming every two weeks and there may be times when the checks wont show up as planned. If you have sufficient savings, you will be prepared for those ³Rainy
PAGE 6
!
days² which are almost guaranteed to happen. In addition, most of the capital that will be used to start your business will come from your own pockets. You want to make sure you can appropriately fund your business with the start up funds needed to get your business off the ground. Tip Two: Create a Business Plan A business plan is a snapshot that potential investors and banks look at in order to predict where your business is headed and what it will look like in the future. ³If you Fail to plan, you Plan to fail². Most businesses are unsuccessful because their business plans were incomplete or ineffective. In addition, Your business plan sets the strategic plan and direction for your business to help you make appropriate decisions with the end goals in mind. The Main Components of a Business Plan are: -The Mission Statement / Vision Statement -The Organizational Plan -The Competition -Market Analysis / Market Plan -The Financial Plan -Executive Summary The Mission Statement articulate the purpose of the company¹s existence, their target audience as well as the products and services. The Vision Statement is the guiding force behind the mission statement that focuses on the
values, aims and the future direction of the company. The Organizational Plan- is a description of your business, products and services and the goals of the company. In this section, the long term objectives for the company are recorded along with the formulation of the company¹s strategies, tasks and functions. The Competition- refers to researching other businesses that offer similar services and products within market. This is comparing prices and other marketing techniques. The Market Analysis is the study of the market in its entirety that relates to the strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats that may arise when launching your business. The Market Plan- is an essential part because this is where you develop strategies on how to solicit consumers and business. THIS IS WHERE YOU ADVERTISE!!!!! Use all public relation resources and social media to market your brand. Social media has become the voice to the general public to connect with current and prospective clients. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube allow you to create a presence in the google domain, which will help customers find you on the web. Incorporate social media in your strategy and invest in a good publicist to let the media know about your business. The Financial Plan- is the spine of the business plan because it is a blue print of your business¹ current and future financial state. It is based upon the business¹ balance sheet, income statement and cash flows. In other words, the financial plan captures how much money is needed to start the business including all start up expenses. In addition, the financial plan will forecast proposed revenue for years to come to assess growth potential. !
The Executive Summary- is the final piece of the puzzle, and the most important part because it summarizes all the sections of your business plan by extracting the main points. Prospective investors determine whether your business is profitable based upon this section of the document. Make sure that your main points are clear, concise and creative! Tip Three: Hire an Accountant From day one, you need to make sure that you are recording all financial information pertaining to your business. Exceptional book and record keeping skills is essential. An accountant can help you with tax planning, business plan review, bookkeeping, payroll and other functions that relate to the disbursement of money. As mentioned earlier, the financial plan is important because it is a blue print of your business, therefore having an accountant allows you to maintain order not only in your business but it also gives you a piece of mind that your finances are in good hands. Tip Four: Live your dream! Now it¹s time to live your dreams. Take all the tips that you have been given above and make your dreams come alive. Businesses are built based on creative and innovative ideas that were given wings to fly. Let your passion, ideas, skills and hobbies allow you to spend your life doing things you love to do as an entrepreneur. Your hobby may be the stepping-stone needed to start a successful career as your own boss! Akilah C. You know one of the things that is almost a necessity when you turn your life over to Christ is to consciously and deliberately surround yourself with other people of faith. Recently I have had the privilege of talking to people who are currently experiencing their own transformations and are exploding in their knowledge and thirst for the Word. I must admit, it’s kind of refreshing for me as I remember my own experience. For those who may not know, in the beginning I was so hungry and thirsty spiritually, that I thought I was headed to seminary. For me, I needed that kind of instruction, or so I thought. When I told a minister friend of mine, he, without discouraging my enthusiasm, mad a valid point. You see one of my misconceptions at that time, was believing somehow, that intellectual pursuit was a solution to most of my confusion or ignorance of just about everything. I could and still do at times, rationalize anything. Boy was I wrong. That kind of thinking kept me out of church and my friend reminded me of that. He let me know as I have stated on numerous occasions, that many people can quote scripture backwards and forwards, but yet have no faith. He thought I would be better served if I surrounded myself with people who were as hungry as I was for the Word. He surmised that fortifying one’s emerging faith was far more important at that time than was spiritual intellectualism. That’s when I started bible study.
FAMU Alumnus produces new movie Available on DVD Oct. 8 Maurice Green, a 2001 graduate of Florida A&M University (FAMU), is the executive producer of the new film, After Effects, which will be available on DVD beginning October 8 at Wal-Mart Stores throughout the U.S. The film features Daniel Baldwin and exNew England Patriot Brandon Lloyd in a tale of six college students who register to participate in an off-campus research study, but later find themselves experiencing an arousing military awakening. Green, a native of Tampa, Fla., began his tenure at FAMU as a junior, due to college dual enrollment credits he completed in 1998 while at Thomas Jefferson Senior High School. He
That pastor friend of mine was right and indeed my efforts to become a mature Christian have been matched stride for stride by those who have attended bible study with me. I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to be a part of another person’s spiritual growth. To have someone else recognize spiritual awakening in you is also a wonderful thing; blessing type stuff. That’s why I find it sometimes overwhelming to watch others testify to what God is beginning to do and what He has done in their lives. It rekindles those early feelings I had upon the recognition and acceptance of Christ as my personal lord and Savior. I am reminded of how people responded to me. Friends that I knew for years opened up to my opening up about Christ. Folk that I knew forever and never knew them as believers seemed to appear out of nowhere. Was it them? Or was it me? I’m convinced that until I offered, until I confessed to them of my transformation, they had no way to touch that part of me. Once opened, fellowship had a place to enter my up-until-then walled off soul. “What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider rubbish that I may gain Christ and be found in Him. Not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ-the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.” Philippians 3:8-9. Think about it and surround yourself accordingly.

graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and religion. He completed dual minor degrees in chemistry, and in middle school mathematics and science. Green is a life member of the FAMU National Alumni Association and the NAACP. Green states that his “love of science, its surrounding mysteries and how it affects our everyday lives” influenced his interest in backing the film. He acknowledges that Denise Burgan, another FAMU graduate, further inspired his engagement. “Burgan’s enthusiasm and commitment to promote the project, as well as her status as a fellow rattler sealed the deal,” Green said. Green notes that his investment has not been lost, as the buzz and interest in the cinema production appears to be growing, although for varying reasons. He adds that “stories about athlete Lloyd’s involvement in the film have sparked national dialogue on CNN.com, Fox Sports News and ESPN.

Lowery. Mrs. Lowery was a visionary founder and leader of the SCLC W.O.M.E.N., devoted wife and partner of Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, mother and a mentor to countless women and girls across the country. We send our deepest condolences to the Lowery family during this time of bereavement.
Passing of Civil Rights Leader Dr. Evelyn Gibson Lowery Evelyn Lowery founded SCLC Women’s Organizational Movement for Equality Now, Inc. to champion the rights of women, children, families, and their ability to respond to issues affecting the community. Through that organization she has spearheaded education and mentoring programs, HIV/Aids awareness initiatives, and built coalitions and alliances with various women’s groups across the globe. She also created the Drum Major for Justice Award, which recognizes awardees for their contributions to the civil rights movement and achievements in their professional fields. She is survived by Joseph Lowery, President Emeritus of the SCLC. Members of Black Women's Roundtable, the women's initiative of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) and the NAACP share expressions on the passing of beloved civil rights leader Dr. Evelyn Gibson Lowery founder of SCLC/Women's Organizational Movement for Equality Now, Inc.: Melanie L. Campbell, Convener, Black Women's Roundtable and President & CEO, NCBCP "Our hearts are heavy in learning of the passing of Mrs. Evelyn Gibson PAGE 13

"The nation has lost a great leader and advocate for civil rights, women's rights, human rights and social justice for all people. We know that our world is a better place because of the life's work of Mrs. Lowery and SCLC W.O.M.E.N. So many of our unsung Heroes and Sheroes of the Civil Rights Movement would not have been recognized for their sacrifices if it was not for her work in organizing her annual Civil Rights Heritage Educational Tour that traced the steps of the Civil Rights Movement through Alabama. "We will 'never forget to remember' Mrs. Evelyn Gibson Lowery's legacy by continuing to do the work every day fighting for the empowerment of women and girls to achieve equal rights economically, educationally and politically now and for future generations." Clayola Brown, SCLC/ W.O.M.E.N. Inc. Board Member and President, A. Philip Randolph Institute. "Sister Evelyn Lowery, our Matriarch of the Movement, was always there-supporting her loving husband Joe, sustaining her "sisters in the struggle", and serving an untold number of disenfranchised women, children and families across all boundaries of ethnicity, gender, age or religion. From voting rights, to civil rights, to women's rights, to human rights - Sister Lowery was one of the original, authentic Freedom Fighters. "As I reflect on the many years that I served alongside her as a member on the SCLC/W.O.M.E.N., INC. board of directors, I can recall her gentle smile, the twinkle in her eye that spoke to her approachableness, but also the slight turn of the head that would signal the strong determination in her words that would be so clearly articulated that they would stop a room.
"Her dedication and determination was so solid, so firmly fixed, that her every action spoke to her nurturing spirit to uphold the tenets of the civil rights movement, but also to lift the women's rights within the movement. She was responsible for honoring civil rights activist Viola Liuzzo, with a monument along the Freedom trail. She was a foot soldier whose shoes will take many of us to fill, we will miss her dearly."
Felicia M. Davis, Director Building Green Initiative at Clark Atlanta University "SCLC Women across the nation grieve the loss of our leader and Shero, Dr. Evelyn Gibson Lowery. First to address HIV/AIDS within the Black community, Mrs. Lowery was a fearless champion for human rights and her work dramatically improved the lives of the less fortunate. She erected monuments to unsung civil rights heroes throughout Alabama and made certain that youth learned this history on the annual Evelyn G. Lowery Heritage Tour commemorating Blood Sunday. "Mrs. Lowery personally touched the lives of thousands of youth with her mentoring program; seniors with her annual Christmas dinner; and recognized the contributions of other leaders with her prestigious Drum Major for Justice Awards. We knew her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and matriarch of the Civil Rights Movement. Our love, prayers and support is extended to the Lowery family who so generously shared Mrs. Lowery with the entire community." Helen Butler, SCLC/ W.O.M.E.N. Inc. Advisory Board and Executive Director, The Peoples Agenda "Dr. Evelyn Gibson Lowery was a prophetic voice for issues of women and girls. She developed and implemented sever solutions for issues negatively impacting the African American community - whether it was Pampering for Peace for women of domestic violence, HIV/AIDS awareness, or a computer technology training center for girls. Her mighty voice will be missed but we pledge to honor her legacy by continuing these programs uplift and empower the community. We lift Dr. Joseph !

Lowery and the Lowery family up in prayer." Edrea Davis, SCLC/ W.O.M.E.N., Inc. Advisory Board and Vice President, Jazzmyne PR "Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of civil rights leader, our leader, Dr. Evelyn Gibson Lowery. Our generation and beyond are the beneficiaries of her courageous, selfless, consistent contributions to the civil rights movement. Mrs. Lowery worked tirelessly to empower women and families in her community through the programs of SCLC/W.O.M.E.N. Inc. Her HIV/AIDS program, domestic violence program, the annual toy drive, and the annual Christmas party uplift the community; and the erection of monuments along the route of the Evelyn G. Lowery Civil Rights Heritage Educational Tour helps to educate young people and preserve the history of the civil rights movement. "Mrs. Lowery was a quiet warrior who fought for equality with strength, perseverance, dignity and class. She will be missed, but her legacy will live on SCLC/W.O.M.E.N., Inc. footsoldiers continue her work. We pray that God wraps his arms around Dr. Lowery and the family in this difficult time." Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the NAACP Board of Directors: “A pioneer and champion in the civil rights movement has passed on,” stated Roslyn M. Brock. “Evelyn Lowery’s leadership was essential to the longevity and power behind the movement for equality. Ms. Lowery was a drum major for justice in her own right. Her spirit lives on in the initiatives she founded and in the activists she mentored across the nation.” Benjamin Todd Jealous, President & CEO of the NAACP: “Today, we mourn the passing of a champion for civil and human rights,” stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. “Ms. Lowery’s foresight and leadership pushed the envelope of what organizations like the SCLC and the NAACP could do for women and families. Her legacy lives on in the coalitions she built and the strong foundation she laid. She was a hero and will be truly missed.” !

In the beginning the title character in The Good Wife, Alicia Florrick (Juliana Margulies), stood agonizingly silent beside her husband Peter (Chris Noth) as he admitted to extramarital indiscretions at a boisterous press conference. By personifying Tammy Wynette’s country classic “Stand by Your Man,” she stood in for a host of wronged spouses of disgraced politicians like gay New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey; high-end prostitute patron Eliot Spitzer, New York governor; and, most recently, sexting addict Anthony Weiner, New York congressman and laughingstock mayoral candidate.
But it was the stage that was calling, and good notices augured for future success. “Devastating comic timing, sexiness with a grain of salt, an irrepressible urge to PAGE 15

Her career took off with E.R., where she stayed for six years and won several awards including an Emmy. They married in a small ceremony in Lenox, Massachusetts. Seven months pregnant, she wore a white Narcisco Rodriguez gown with sheer elbow length gloves; he wore a black Armani tux with a red boutonnière. Her father Paul, a veteran adman who helped develop the Alka-Seltzer “plop plop, fizz fizz” campaign, walked her down the aisle. The honeymoon got delayed as she was shooting a Fox drama, Canterbury’s Law. The series barely lasted a month after its premiere the following March, by which time the newlyweds had welcomed son Kieran Lindsay. Given that her character is so fiercely independent, it seems a bit jarring to discover that, in real life, Panjabi’s marriage was arranged. But unlike some arranged marriages, in which the couple never even meets before tying the knot, the actress had a choice. Her mother had met a man, businessman Raj Nihalani, and urged her to see him. “At the time it brought out my rebellious streak because I thought her taste in men was not going to be like mine,” says Panjabi. “But at the end of the day, she knows me better than anybody.”
As the Emmy award-winning The Good Wife enters its fifth season on CBS beginning September 29, many characters’ romantic entanglements remain messily unresolved. The once torrid affair between Alicia and Will (Josh Charles) has cooled, and Peter has surprisingly asked her to renew their vows. Sparks still fly whenever savvy senior partner Diane (Christine Baranski) encounters her sexy onand-off paramour Kurt (Gary Cole). The revelation of the dangerous, estranged husband Nick (Marc Warren) of crack investigator Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) exposed a torturous past and uncertain future. In real life, the three female co-stars have happily enjoyed far more marital harmony. On October 15, Baranski celebrates her 30th anniversary with husband Matthew Cowles. The Buffalo native moved to New York City after high school, one of those countless, intrepid souls eager to become an actor. She attended Julliard and landed a role on a popular soap opera, Another World, and a small part in a feature film, Lovesick.

The couple married in 1998, just as her acting career was heating up. Originally from Pakistan, her family emigrated from India to London where she was born in 1972. Yep, a lot of people say a lot of things and what they say don’t always make sense. You cannot make a man love you and you cannot make him love his child. Hypertension is also manifested neurologically when emotional stress triggers the response to "fight or flight" response. This causes the muscles to squeeze these tiny blood vessels; they

Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
