Rev. Jesse Jackson had a strong message about Ebola and care provided to Thomas Eric Duncan. Mr. Duncan made headlines when he became the first diagnosed case of Cheryl Smith Ebola in the United States. It was reported that Mr. Duncan went to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas with a temperature of 104 degrees and was sent home only to return by ambulance, and informed that he had the Ebola disease. Dallas citizens were informed that the City of Dallas had activated its Emergency Operations Center on Level 2: High Readiness and was working with the Dallas County Health and Human Services Department and the Centers for Disease Control. It was also noted that Mr. Duncan had traveled from the West African country of Liberia. As people around the world said prayers for Mr. Duncan, people also began asking questions about what appeared to be a double-standard. Some felt that Mr. Duncan was turned away because he was Black and had no insurance. Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price went on the record expressing this concern. Presbyterian issued a statement saying everyone gets the same treatment and care. Thomas Eric Duncan Then it was announced that Rev. Jesse Jackson would be in Dallas with Mr. Duncan’s family. That news met with mixed reviews. While some were saying that he was seeking media attention, others followed the facts. When I visited with Mr. Duncan’s mother, sister, nephew and grand-nephew, they talked about how difficult it was to get information. They needed help and reached out to Rev. Jackson. I asked how they felt and they said much better and that they were grateful to Rev. Jackson, while also very concerned about their loved one’s health. So there’s a message in all this for all the naysayers. Sure, bringing the Rev. to Dallas didn’t save Mr. Duncan’s life, but it brought comfort to the family. When any of us gets into trouble, we can decide who we call and it’s on us. Like Mr. Duncan’s family, I want results and I know I will get more results from Rev. Jackson than I will from misinformed and misguided people who are caught up in personalities instead of focusing on issues. Malcolm X cautioned us against this very thing. Public Enemy told us “don’t believe the hype.” Still we find ourselves getting caught up. And we love having something other ethnic group members can agree with us on. If you’re so bad, try calling out one of their “so-called leaders” when something happens with them and their communities. I’d like to see that! I guarantee you that Rev. Jackson was privy to more information than the majority of his critics. He was able to get information and meet with folks that his critics can only look at on television. And he’s smart enough to gather information from more than one source. Mr. Duncan’s sister told me that she was hurting because of the concern she had for her brother and she felt they had been given the runaround, but with Rev. Jackson, things were different. Just imagine your loved one is sick and you hear news reports about a possible arrest because he didn’t reveal that he was in contact with a woman infected with the Ebola virus. The family felt he was being treated like a criminal, instead of a patient. Someone told me that Mr. Duncan should have never boarded a plane coming to America if he knew he could possibly have the disease. I asked that same person what would hey have done. To her credit, she said she would have gotten on the plane also. Yes, we have had to deal with a lot of hypocrisy. Rev. Jackson says he wants fairness. He didn’t speak out of anger, instead it was “concern.” Rev. Jackson said it is important that the entire continent of Africa is not vilified. While thousands have died and there are four African countries where the outbreak is prevalent, the focus is now spreading to America because of Mr. Duncan and Americans who have been treated. Rev. Jackson said it important that there is fairness in whatever protocol is used on patients; regardless of ethnicity, socio-economic status or sex. Realizing that people are anxious, Rev. Jackson, along with other health officials, stressed that the disease is not airborne, that the transfer of bodily fluids is the culprit. Unfortunately I have heard disparaging remarks about Africa. Folks, out of fear and ignorance, are saying some hurtful and unconscionable things. We have to stop the madness. We should be thinking of ways to help. Prayers are needed and so is action. Let’s work more than our mouths! There were several prayer vigils held and expressions of love and support were flooding in. It was with sadness, however that it was announced that on Wednesday morning shortly before 8a.m., Mr. Duncan died. According to already established protocol, his body has already been cremated. Upon hearing the news, all I could think about was the mother who traveled by car from North Carolina and never got to see her son alive. I also thought about how we need to do more to help make this world a better place and we need to show more love to Africa and one another!

First Lady Obama endorses Davis in new radio ad

First Lady Michelle Obama

Fort Worth - This week the Wendy Davis campaign will debut a new ad on statewide African American radio recorded by First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama. In the radio spot, First Lady Obama highlights Senator Davis' inspiring personal story and the difference education made in her life. The First Lady says that "for Wendy, education is a top priority because she

wants to give all our kids a chance to build a better life for themselves and for their families." This pivotal endorsement in the Texas governor's race comes after months of outlining the clear contrast on education issues. During the 2011 legislative session, Senator Davis tried to stop $5.4 billion in funding cuts to Texas schools. Today, Greg Abbott is in court defending those very same cuts to public education in the courtroom, fighting more than 600 school districts across the state to keep their classrooms overcrowded and teachers laid off. The First Lady also touts the senator's commitment to expanding Medicaid, raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour and creating good paying jobs in the ad. "First Lady Michelle Obama's endorsement reinforces the clear choice for governor in this race," said Davis spokesperson Ofirah Yheskel. "She has not only recognized Senator Davis' leadership on education, but also her commitment to ensuring that all hardworking Texas families have the access they deserve to good-paying jobs and quality healthcare". Congresswoman Johnson gives remarks at DART Ground Breaking Ceremony in South Oak Cliff

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson attended a ground breaking ceremony for DART’s South Oak Cliff (SOC-3) Blue Line Extension along with Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, the Hon. Royce West and the Hon. Helen Giddings. The new “SOC-3” is a 3-mile extension of DART’s Blue Line from Ledbetter Station south to the University of North Texas Dallas (UNT). Within this extension, new “at-grade” stations will be added in South Dallas. One station will be located at Camp Wisdom and the other on UNT’s campus. During the ground breaking

ceremony, Congresswoman Johnson gave the following remarks: “Projects like these are vital to Dallas. They bring a competitive economic edge to our area, ultimately drawing in new businesses and residents. With service set to begin in 2016, we can also expect that some of the congestion caused by our region’s ever growing population will be eased. DART’s extensive network of light rail, the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) and busses are

integral to the recent success our area has seen. In fact, I believe that the effectiveness of our region’s growing public transportation system is one of the reasons why DFW is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. This project is a great leap forward for both the region and the DART agency.” Since its establishment in 1983, DART has grown to serve over 100 million passenger trips a year in 13 different cities within 700 square miles. With additions like that of the Blue Line Extension in South Oak Cliff, these numbers continue to grow each year.

Protestors make appearance at Sundance Square Plaza — On Saturday, October 11, 2014, at 8:00 AM, family and friends of Tiffney McAdoo will continue protests at 420 Main St., Fort Worth, as Habitat for Humanity hosts former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn in the efforts of their Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. Protestors are calling for an end to violations of due process in Ms. McAdoo’s case; requiring monitoring of human rights abuses in Tarrant County Jail; and demanding the immediate resignation of District Judge David Scott Wisch. Ms. McAdoo’s supporters are determined to end her confinement in isolation, also; her indefinite detention without plea or conviction; the unregulated, accusatory power of jail guards against her; and other abuses occurring in the Tarrant County judicial system. They are entering the fifth week of protests. Donna West, Ms. McAdoo’s mother, has organized protests that take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, in the corridor between Tarrant County Jail and the Tim Curry Criminal Justice Center. On Tuesday, September 30, 2014, Mrs. West and another daughter testified before the Tarrant County Commissioners Court regarding fiduciary abuses in Tarrant County. The group believes that violations of civil rights are greater in Tarrant County because people do not speak out against them or tell the stories of their experiences with the county. Protests are drawing attention to Judge David Scott Wisch’s use of profanity while presiding over Ms. McAdoo’s case and to the fact that Ms. McAdoo has been indefinitely imprisoned for more than a year without entering a plea on an alleged misdemeanor. Her family also adds that medical attention for Ms. McAdoo has been slow and inadequate. Ms. McAdoo is languishing, having spent more than thirty-two days in solitary confinement due to various accusations by jail guards. Her family believes the accusations are outlandish. The first disciplinary action taken against her was because she moved ice from a jail container to her own. Officials said she “changed the PAGE 11

!

structure of the ice” and charged her with possessing contraband. Tarrant County Jail guards are permitted to lodge accusations against inmates without providing evidence; and inmates are not allowed to attend disciplinary hearings. Protestors believe this has to stop. In Ms. McAdoo’s initial case, her attorney informed the court that he had not prepared for her trial (which Ms. McAdoo says she can prove is based on a false indictment) and filed a request to withdraw. Judge Wisch rejected the attorney’s request and Ms. McAdoo informed two courts that she was being forced to plead, signing her signature to plea documents with the words “under duress.” Duress voids any contract; and the court’s procedure regarding duress is to stop proceedings and begin again. This was not done in Ms. McAdoo’s case. Instead, she was placed on probation. Ms. McAdoo says she was falsely indicted, forced into the plea agreement and, subsequently, placed on supervisory watch. She was later arrested on an alleged misdemeanor accusation and has been held for more than a year without a speedy trial or conviction. Though a new attorney has filed for a recusal against Judge Wisch, the judge’s administrative superior has failed to remove him from her case. Ms. McAdoo is being held indefinitely without a bond or trial date. In an effort to stop violations of due process against Ms. McAdoo, her attorney has emphasized that Ms. McAdoo’s signature with “under duress” voids the plea documents and that the court has failed in Ms. McAdoo’s case by not starting over. Judge Wisch’s response, according to Ms. McAdoo’s family, has been to confess that he, his staff and jail personnel made a mistake in ignoring the under duress signatures; but he has continued to hold her case in limbo. In a previous Habeas Corpus hearing, Judge David S. Wisch said he’d make a decision in three weeks regarding granting a new trial. It has now been more than two months.

Urban League of Greater Dallas re-groups with Dr. Beverly Mitchell-Brooks announcing retirement In announcing her retirement this week, Dr. Beverly Mitchell-Brooks concludes nearly 25-years of highprofile leadership and valued service as a prominent civic leader and humanitarian. She emphasized that she will continue to be a good-will ambassador and active advocate while cherishing many lifetime experiences with the National Urban League and its North Texas affiliate headquartered in Dallas. “This has been a season for me, a good season, but it is challenging when you lose the people who are your foundation, the loss of my mother followed by my husband,” said Dr. Brooks. “The timing is absolute right now to step down but I take with me the biggest lesson learned, how to be a true servant/leader. The Urban League is in my spirit and I am an Urban Leaguer.” Although her background has always been scientific, when given the opportunity to serve her community by former City Manager Richard Knight, she turned her sights toward the nonprofit/public service sector. In 1990, she became the first woman to head the Dallas Urban League in its 33-year history. Under her leadership, the League implemented the city’s first Building Bridges of Understanding program and built the League’s first permanent headquarters and state-of-the-art technology center in the heart of Oak Cliff. She also provided leadership for the League’s designation as a Community Action Program (CAP), which opened the doors for the agency to receive the State’s Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) funding for Dallas County. Three community offices have opened under this grant in Irving, Garland and Pleasant Grove. Additionally, the League also received the only five (5) year demonstration grant in Texas from the US Department of Health/ PAGE 12

!

Human Services designed to address out of school and adjudicated minority males, including ex-offenders. The success of the program established the League’s Institute for Minority Success programs. This was the foundation for the League to receive one of 30 Department Of Labor Prison Re-entry grants in 2004. The League’s program was among the top three (3) performers each year and was recognized by the White House for its success. The League continues to work with the City of Dallas and Dallas County to provide job training and employment opportunities for the formally incarcerated. With a carefully researched strategic plan to become more sustainable and self-sufficient; also to accelerate community outreach and command greater funding, the Urban League of Greater Dallas has re-organized its front office with the retirement of Dr. Brooks. Stepping in as interim CEO is Gwendolyn Jones, a seasoned professional who has been with the Urban League in Dallas since 2010 and is a specialist in business development, fundraising, banking compliance, policy and procedures and all phases of real estate development. Ms. Jones, formerly served as Vice President of VMK Management and also First Vice President, Compliance Manager/ CRA of Countrywide Bank. Dr. Brooks has always demonstrated a keen intellect and professionalism,” said Gwendolyn

Jones, Urban League Interim President & CEO “She is a problem solver and was the perfect leader to take on the many challenges facing the Urban League. Moving forward, our vision will be to implement sustainable programs that improve access to housing, social services, educational training, investment, opportunity, and lifesaving services now and for future generations. The mission of the Urban League of Dallas and North Central Texas is to provide the critical skills and resources necessary to enable all citizens to secure economic self-reliance. The agency builds bridges of opportunity through programs and services in the areas of employment, health, veteran services, housing, education, technology, and economic and community development.

!

After nearly 25 years of extraordinary service to the Urban League, Dr. Brooks’ historic accomplishments have moved the organization to new heights,” said Stephanie Couser, Chair of the League’s Board of Trustees. “We are extremely grateful for her dedication to the agency and the community. Plans are underway to host a tribute gala and appreciation dinner for Dr. Brooks in early 2015 which will mark her 25th year.” “As we look to the future, we have an exciting opportunity to positively impact our community”, she said. “Through the new change in leadership, we will meet our challenges and continue to provide critical programs and meaningful services that enable our participants to become productive citizens where they lived and worked.”

Our First Lady of Dance by Cheryl Smith * Ann Williams has left an indelible mark on this world. Her legacy is intact. When people talk about this dynamic woman, usually there’s a smile on their faces because she is such an endearing person, full of love and life. That doesn’t mean that she is a pushover or that you can take advantage of her. Immediately you should perish the thought. Ann Williams takes care of business and she honors her commitments -- two attributes that make her part of a vanishing breed. But maybe, just maybe, because she has touched so many lives, there is hope for future generations, that they will place value on what’s really important in life, just as Ms. Williams does. Sure she could have entered the world of dance for the fanfare, cameras and notoriety; but that’s not her style. It didn’t take her long to realize that life is a gift and that she could in turn be a gift to others. This long-time educator and founder of the Dallas Black Dance Theatre hails from Mexia, Texas and is a proud graduate of Prairie View A&M University. Realizing the importance of education, she went on to become the first African-American to earn a Master of Arts Degree in Dance and Related Arts from Texas Woman’s University. She also holds a certificate in Arts Management from Texas A&M University. Some call her “Dr. Williams,” and it’s not just because she has honorary degrees from Northwood University and her alma mater, Texas Woman’s University. a founding member of the Dance Council and The International Association of Blacks in Dance, Ms. Williams received her early dance training under Barbara Hollis (a member of the Katherine Dunham Dance Company), Edith James, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman. This 2002 inductee into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame is a “doctor” of life, liberty, justice and the pursuit of all things noble. Thousands who have been touched by this angel will share in the excitement on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 when the eastern end of Flora Street, between Arts Plaza and Woodall Rogers Service Road, will be renamed Ann Williams Way at an official ceremony, beginning at 9:00a.m. It was an easy and unanimous decision for the Dallas City Council. In the Dallas Arts District, the street is the home of the Dallas Black Dance Theater since 2008, which was the former Moorland YMCA building until Ms. Williams’ visionary leadership kicked into overdrive and through major gifts, grants and a city of Dallas bond program, DBDT raised approximately $11.2 million to renovate the building. The area was known as the “hub of the African American community.” Flora Street, in what was called “North Dallas,” back in the day, has the distinction of being the original settlement for formerly enslaved Africans. To date, the only remaining structures from that era are the St. Paul United Methodist Church, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and Dallas Black Dance Theatre offices (formerly the Moorland YMCA). What you have today is an oasis for talent and lovers of all forms of dance. PAGE 13

!

Ms. Williams is no stranger to dance aficionados around the world. It was in 1973, that she founded Dallas Black Dance Academy as a community-based organization because she wanted to provide dance instruction to minority boys and girls. Three years later she founded Dallas Black Dance Theatre, a professional modern dance company providing opportunities for African American trained dancers to perform within the region. That region has stretched exponentially and 41 years later, DBDT has 12 full-time salaried dancers, one semi-professional company with 11 volunteer dancers and a 450 student academy with three performing ensembles. Her dancers know no borders or boundaries. Their love of dance, and hard work, has been the source of entertainment for millions. And when those dancers take to the stage, the

finest, most stellar performances will captivate your mind to the point that you might be so inclined to give it a try. For those adventurous enough and looking to provide excitement in their lives or introduce a disciplined, enjoyable art form to their children, DBDT offers classes for all ages! Now more about this phenomenal woman, who is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Trinity Chapter-The Links, Inc., Jack and Jill of America, a Lifetime member of NAACP, and the Black Chamber of Commerce. It is important to share her bio because sometimes we tend to forget who we have in our midst. She serves on the Board of Directors of Texas Ballet Theater, The International Association of Blacks in Dance, Texas Cultural Trust, The DSM Management and Advisory Board of the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts and North Texas Dance. She is a dance consultant and has served as a dance panelist for the City of Dallas/Office of Cultural Affairs, Texas Commission on the Arts, Houston and Arkansas Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Ms. Williams started her teaching career in Dallas at the John Henry Brown School (now Billy E. Dade) under Dr. Billy Dade. She taught in the

Richardson School District (Hamilton Park High School) for five years. In 1968 she went to Bishop College and established the school’s first dance department. It was through a $3 million Ford Foundation grant where the Dance, Music and Theater Departments formed the Fine Arts Lyceum and brought artists Maya Angelou, Alex Haley, Dance Theatre of Harlem and The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to the college and Dallas community. She has received many awards and honors from numerous organizations, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Phi Delta Kappa, Sankofa Foundation Legacy Award of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Dallas Dance Council, NAACP, the Dallas Historical Society, Zeta Phi Beta’s “Woman of the Year,” and she was honored as a “distinguished alumna” by Prairie View and TWU in 1990, the Real Estate Council’s “Dreamers, Doers & Unsung Heroes” Award, and TACA (The Auction for the Cultural Arts) Award for Excellence in the Performing Arts. For 37 years, Ms. Williams orchestrated the growth of Dallas Black Dance Theatre from a community-based organization and a semiprofessional organization to a fully professional dance company and an Academy that trains over 800 students annually. Dallas Black Dance Theatre is the only Texas arts organization to perform at two Olympics – Atlanta 1996 and London 2012 and over its history, has performed in 30 states, 14 countries and on five continents for more than three million patrons and two million students. Ms. Williams founded four additional performance ensembles – Dallas Black Dance Theatre II, Allegro, Sr. Performing Ensemble, and the Junior Performing Ensemble of the Dallas Black Dance Academy. The organization has 12 professional dancers on 11 month contract and an administrative staff of 10. The company tours nationally and internationally and presents a Dallas Season with three performance series at the AT&T Performing Arts Center Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre and New York Season at the Ailey Citigroup Theatre annually. And yes, she also had time for family! For 44 years, she was married to the late Nathaniel Williams, a retired administrator of the Dallas Independent School District. They are the parents of one daughter, Angelia. In May of 2014, Ms. Williams officially retired as Artistic Director of the Dallas Black Dance Theatre. She remains actively involved with the dance company providing guidance for the annual Founder’s Luncheon and as an emeritus member of the Board of Directors. There will probably be a traffic jam on Ann Williams Way as homage is paid to this great woman. *Additional information taken from Ms. Williams’ !

Worry, worry not By James A. Washington

“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” Matthew 6:27. I don’t know about you but I often have a lot of trouble with this, even with my belief and understanding contained in this scripture. One of the hardest things for me to accept is the fact that worry is not supposed to have any place in God’s kingdom of believers. People have tried to tell me that not only is worry unchristian, but on some levels, it’s actually a sin. For me, it seems that I cannot help but worry about things which I literally have no control over and I know it. Whether it’s family, or friends, or health or finances, relationships, my tendency is, you guessed it, to worry; as if worrying alone will somehow change the circumstances or perhaps improve the situation. Because this is a learning process, I’m doing my best to be a good student of Matthew 6:27. As such, I realize that the answer to not worrying has already been

Spiritually Speaking shown to me. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all things will be given you as well.” Matthew 6:33. Now the next line, I believe says it all. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” I need to focus on this because life constantly gives us all pop quizzes to test our belief in this truth. It really is a faith thing. Rather than worry, we should rely on the truth of Jesus Christ. That simple truth is these issues, yours and mine, have already been dealt with via Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. As such I should feel free not to fret.

Again as a student, I can relate to the problem and intellectually understand the answer. But while this is understood on that level, life’s pop quizzes still cause me undue and unnecessary anxiety. Our text teaches us to accept through faith that worry is useless. Our teacher lets us know I have the answer and I should understand and internalize that. I also know I cannot take Him with me at test time. But through study I can recall the right answers when life wants to throw those inevitable quizzes. “Do not be anxious about anything. But by everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests

to God.” Philippians 4:6. If I can just remember to do this and then let go, I’ll know that I know that I know. My prayer is that it will become habit forming and that’s a habit we should all try and develop. You see I know I’m a hands-on kind of student. Don’t tell me show me. By virtue of this biblical demonstration, reinforced by repetition, I think I’m getting it. At least I hope I am. If I could just quit trying to figure my way out of things on my own; quit blocking my own blessings so to speak. That is life’s recipe for failure. Let God factor into all of my decision making and follow what is then revealed. I have a friend who calls this ‘guided decision making.’ He claims it works. In short stop, think and pray. Hand it over and let it go. May God bless and keep you always.

Dallas Public Education Advocates join with National Alliance —Leaders of the Our Community, Our Schools coalition announced today that the Dallas public education advocacy organization has affiliated with the national Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools. At a news conference this morning, representatives of several OCOS member groups, some of whom attended a recent convening of the national alliance in Washington, D.C., discussed the new partnership and their policy goals for keeping on track with what works to raise student achievement and maintain high-quality public schools in all Dallas neighborhoods.

“OCOS joins this national coalition with great excitement and anticipation,” said OCOS co-chair Rena Honea, who is also president of the Alliance/AFT union that represents teachers and support staff in the Dallas Independent School District. “We’re joining a coordinated movement actively working to reclaim the promise of our public schools as the anchors of their communities and the foundation of success for all children.” The Dallas news conference was one of three held today across Texas. Public schools supporters in Austin and Houston also announced their affiliation with AROS and unveiled policy agendas. In Austin, the focus was on legislation to define and support the community schools model. In Houston, public education advocates called for a moratorium on school closures. “Our schools belong to all of us: the students who learn in them, the parents who support them, the educators and staff who work in them and the communities they anchor,” said Angela Davis, NEADallas president, at the news conference here. “Our school district should be guided by a commitment to

OCTOBER 10, 2014

provide all children with the opportunity to attend a quality public school in their community.” The AROS coalition first formed last year, and delegates from about two dozen U.S. cities and towns gathered in Washington Sept. 27-28 to map out key issues and action plans for the coming year. That agenda was topped by calls for financial and educational accountability in charter schools and support for the community schools model of neighborhood public schools that provide students with quality in-school supports and wraparound services to address outsidethe-classroom needs. Others participating in the Dallas news conference were Michelle Berry, a DISD parent and community leader with the Texas Organizing Project; and Dr. Juanita Wallace of the Dallas NAACP. Members of the Our Community, Our Schools coalition have been active in the current debate and review process examining whether the Dallas Independent School District should be converted to a socalled home rule charter schools district.

Eleanors Hope continues Roosevelt legacy of social progress The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare was joined by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Congresswoman Gwen Moore (DWI), NOW President Terry ONeill and Tufts Health Plan President/CEO, James Roosevelt, Jr. on a press call today to announce the launch of a new national initiative called Eleanors Hope, to help bring an end to the disparity between mens and womens income, health and retirement security. The National Committee is excited to launch the Eleanors Hope initiative today with the support of many influential allies and Members of Congress. Women have a lot at stake in Novembers election and beyond. Through grassroots advocacy and education in our communities and on Capitol Hill, the Eleanors Hope project will raise awareness, recruit and train new activists, highlight female leaders who are making a difference and generate national interest in womens health and retirement security issues leading up to the 2014 and 2016 elections.... Max Richtman, NCPSSM President/CEO The National Committee was founded in 1982 by Eleanor & Franklin Roosevelts son, former Congressman James Roosevelt. It is that Roosevelt heritage, and in the spirit of Eleanors work on womens and social issues, that this new project will honor her name. Social Security has contributed to the financial well-being of almost every American family and is among my grandparents greatest legacies. My grandmothers activism for womens equity, poverty prevention and other social issues was based on her boundless optimism that the American people could move mountains if only freed from the fear of want and destitution. Her hope has yet to be fully realized for too many Americans -- I believe the Eleanors Hope initiative will help to change that..... James Roosevelt, Jr., President/CEO Tufts Health Plan & Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelts grandson While Social Security is a program that is vitally important to all Americans, it is especially important to the financial security of women. Not only do women, on average, live longer than men they also earn less in Social Security benefits. These fiscal realities facing millions of American women increase the risk that they may outlive their savings, impoverishing them and their families. PAGE 16

!

"We are on the front edge of a retirement crisis, which means that protecting and expanding Social Security is an increasingly important part of improving retirement security. Because women earn less than men, they are more vulnerable in retirement. Im happy the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare is focusing on this issue through the Eleanor's Hope initiative," Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said. "For nearly half of women age 65 and older, Social Security is all that stands between them and poverty. We must keep our commitment to our seniors by strengthening Social Security, so that after a lifetime of hard work, everyone has a chance to retire with dignity. The time is now to address and improve the fiscal outlook for Social Security and extend the solvency of the system. Women, people of color and low-income families are counting on us to update and improve this critical social safety net. This is why the National Committees 'Eleanors Hope' initiative is so vital. Through advocacy, recruitment, and training programs, Americas female leaders are given a valuable platform to raise awareness around the health and retirement security issues of our American women and girls. I'm proud to be a part of this important effort.... Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-WI) When it comes to the issues of retirement security and gender equity, the differences in policy choices offered by candidates are stark. The future of generations of women and their families depend on providing income equality during their working years and strong Social Security and Medicare programs in their retirement, so women have a lot at stake in these upcoming elections. Women are the sole or primary breadwinners in nearly half of all families in the U.S. -- yet two-thirds of minimum wage workers, and nearly 80 percent of sub-minimum wage tipped workers, are women. Candidates for office need to realize that women, along with the men in their lives, will vote for those who support wage equality and policies that ensure their retirement security....Terry ONeill, NOW President The goal of Eleanors Hope is to raise awareness through communitybased and on-line education, recruit and train new activists, and bolster Congressional leaders who are making a difference on womens income, health and retirement security issues. Well

advocate for legislation that addresses the inequities threatening millions of retired women. Some of the National Committees proposals for improving benefits in Social Security and Medicare include: Providing Social Security credits for caregivers Improving Social Security survivor benefits Equalizing Social Securitys rules for disabled widows Strengthening the Social Security Cost of Living Allowance Boosting the basic Social Security benefit of all current and future beneficiaries Building on preventive care provisions in the Affordable Care Act and expanding coordination of care for beneficiaries with multiple chronic conditions. Generating greater savings on the cost of prescription drugs by increasing manufacturer discounts, allowing Medicare to receive the same drug rebates as Medicaid for dual-eligibles, and promoting lower drug costs by providing for faster development of generic drugs. The National Committee will hold a Congressional staff briefing, Tuesday, October 14th, on the issues and policy prescriptions needed to address the income inequality, retirement insecurity and health inequities facing women. Then on October 15th well join members of the nations only all-female Congressional delegation in New Hampshire to talk about the Eleanors Hope initiative. Nationwide, our activists are already in the field educating, advocating and collecting Eleanors Hope pledges from women who have promised to get out and vote in November and beyond. We’ve also engaged our membership and active on-line communities to convince Washington that nows the time to address the retirement crisis facing millions of American women and their families. The National Committee, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization acts in the interests of its membership through advocacy, education, services, grassroots efforts and the leadership of the Board of Directors and professional staff. The work of the National Committee is directed toward developing better-informed citizens and voters.

Civil and Human Rights Coalition applauds Voting Rights Rulings, calls for Federal Voting Discrimination Protections WASHINGTON -- Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement after court decisions stopped discriminatory voting changes from going into eect in Texas and Wisconsin: “Our democracy cannot adequately function when our right to vote is subject to a roller coaster of legal rulings just weeks before the election. Without clear, consistent federal protections, we will be in a constant, chaotic and expensive battle to protect the right to vote until we restore the Voting Rights Act. Voter discrimination is still an entrenched reality across the country. But mounting lawsuits like those in Wisconsin and Texas would be unsustainable and untenable for most voters to replicate in their own communities.

Wendy Davis Statement On TX Voter ID Law Being Struck Down Fort Worth -- Wendy Davis issued the following statement after the court called Texas' Voter ID law a "poll tax" and "discriminatory" against African-Americans and Hispanics before striking it down. "This is great news for democracy. I call on Attorney General Greg Abbott to drop his defense of a law that a court has now called a 'poll tax' and 'discriminatory' against AfricanAmericans and Hispanics.

BRINGING YOU ENLIGHTENING, EDUCATIONAL, EMPOWERING, INSPIRING, THOUGHT-PROVOKING INFORMATION Robert Moreland, who competes in football and track and field for his home school at Lincoln talks about balancing of rigorous studies at BOMLA while being a student-athlete.

Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy’s first senior class

The first senior class at Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy, which opened in August 2011, will graduate this school year, as they set out to be top leaders in the real world. The ideas of brotherhood and leadership have been key in the development of the young men at Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy as evidenced by the character of the 12 young men who comprise the school’s first senior class. Among them are scholars, athletes, engineers, journalists and world travelers. “This class is a melting pot of intelligence,” said Cortney Cummings, senior class sponsor and BOMLA instructional coach. “They honor themselves as a brotherhood, which is not something they take lightly. They are their own individuals, and yet, a group that follows the right path. Their choice to actually attend this campus, the sacrifice that came with that, and the fact that they have the ability to adapt to different situations, which has everything to do with being young men and the respect they have for themselves and each other.” Cummings explained the school’s culture creates a way of developing the students’ social and emotional skills and opening up those experiences through discussions, allowing them to feel safe to try, safe to speak. When the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy opened in August 2011, with an enrollment of 205 students, on the former B.F. Darrell Elementary School campus, the school’s goal was “developing young men into impactful leaders for the world tomorrow through the development of their intellectual, moral, physical, social and emotional skills,” according the school’s website. PAGE 18

!

“We see ourselves as reimagining young men,” said Principal Nakia Douglas in an address with Dr. Warren Farrell with the Commission for White House Council on Boys and Men. “We teach our young men there are always going to be two paths in life, a left and a right, and we ask them ‘Are you going to be a leader or a follower?’” “I wanted to change my life, become more mature and get ready for the real world,” said Robert Moreland, who competes in football and track and field for his home school at Lincoln while balancing rigorous studies at BOMLA, came to the school because he wanted something new after finishing middle school at E.B. Comstock. Like Moreland, another student, David Martinez, Jr., an aspiring gaming designer, wanted something better—to distance himself from a troubled past. While Moreland and Martinez made their own decision to attend BOMLA, Mario Grimaldo’s parents made the decision for him. “For a 14-year-old boy coming to an all-boys school, it’s something different,” said Grimaldo. Many of the boys agreed, saying the absence of girls in their classes and at their school, was something to get used to but that it allowed them a clearer focus on their studies. “Being a part of the first all-male public school is pressure, but our teachers believe in us, and even when we fail, they still believe,” said Grimaldo. “We are a

part of greatness, we are setting a standard, and that’s important to me, to be here.” From attending the second presidential inauguration of their school’s namesake, to their travels to Taiwan, France and Spain, participating in Robotics, and sports, these young men are personally invested in the legacy they hope to leave for future BOMLA graduates. While Kendall Long hopes the foundation he created as the school’s leading journalist will continue to grow, Mahteme Adamu whose goal is to invent technology that makes life easier for people in his home country of Ethiopia hopes to leave a legacy of a brighter future for his younger BOMLA brothers. The graduates cite excellence, greatness, truth to self, perseverance and commitment to the pursuit of education as pieces of their legacy they hope to pass down to classes that will follow in their footsteps. “This class sets the standard of excellence,” said Cummings,” (…) of redefining the stereotype that is associated with a lot of young men today. To allow the community to see that in us and give them hope, that our school system is still tried and true, that it still can produce scholars, particularly male scholars, and what that looks like as a future man that will be able to give back to their community, who will become fathers and husbands and live life in a way that honors leadership and brotherhood and being your brothers’ keeper. They are setting the standard. Modeling the expectation.” !

Dating a Serial Cheater Dear Alma, This may be a silly story, but I need some advice. My boyfriend and I have been dating about six years now. We’ve had our ups and downs and all, but this by far has been the worst I’ve ever felt. He cheated on me with my BFF. I found out five months later because my “BFF” (who is no longer a friend) decided to text me and tell me. So when I confronted him about it, he kept lying, saying she came on to him first, but she would say he did first. I didn’t want to believe it at first because I trusted him SO much, but then I got a couple other calls from a few other women saying that he’s been messing around with them as well. That’s when I knew he HAD to be cheating. Of course, I was heartbroken and all that, but I just don’t know what to do…I wanted to get married have kids, etc. I wanted this relationship to work, talk out our problems, but at the same time I’m

Ask Alma not letting no man cheat on me. I need some advice! Signed, Help Dear Help, This isn’t silly. You’re a bright girl, and you already know what to do. Like so many others, you could wait until after you’re married and after you’ve had kids, while he continues to mess around on you, if you’d like. Marriage doesn’t prevent someone from cheating. You don’t get married and then all of a sudden become honest. And TBT, I’ve got a feeling that part of your relationship will never change.

Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans over 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@yahoo.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and twitter @almaaskalma.

For the past six years, you seem to be comfortable parked on the road of deception. Enough is enough. When he crossed the line with your BFF, that was your cue. It doesn’t matter who initiated it. Both are liars. Don’t just drop her; drop him, too. If you can find it in your heart to forgive him, offer her the same courtesy. It will bring you peace of mind. They both are equally to blame. Stop, rewind, play it again. I think my sistah’s need to hear me one more time – they are BOTH equally to blame! For the sake of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, girl, Let-Him-Go! You may not feel it today, but after you’ve moved on, you’ll be on your knees shouting a

prayer of thanks, wondering why you stayed so long. Chalk this up as a life lesson. In your next round of relationships you’ll recognize those red flags immediately! Different names, same games, but no worries for you. Professor Experience has taught you well. You don’t need my advice — you need confirmation. So here it is. I’m giving you permission to walk away. Believe that you’re able and capable of being a part of a lifelong, loving relationship, filled with honesty and respect. You’re so close; take that leap of faith. Don’t look back.

Over time, as your heart is mending, I can’t begin to tell you how grateful you’ll be with this decision. It’s a blessing you’ve got to feel for yourself. Alma

Veteran journalist to speak at 2014 NAPPIOLOGY EXPO: A HEALTHY MIND, BODY AND HAIR EVENT The 2014 Nappiology Expo is focusing on natural options for not only hair, but also the mind and body. Rene Syler, host of Sweet Retreats, is the guest speaker for the expo "A Healthy Mind, Body and Hair Event." The expo will be held Sunday, November 2, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Grapevine Convention Center at 1209 South Main Street, Grapevine, Texas. "For the past six years we have been providing men, women, and children educational information about natural hair care and beauty," said Nappiology founder De Johnson. "This year we are including healthy aspects to enhance their mind, body and hair." Dozens of natural hair-care lines have flooded the hair industry as natural hair styles have become popular again. According to the market research firm Mintel, the relaxer product that chemically straightens tightly curled hair has dropped in sales more than 26 percent since 2008. Mintel estimates the black hair-care market is a $500 billion-dollar industry. "It's important for women to understand the ingredients in hair-care products and what they do to their hair," said ThinkandGrowChick.com natural-hair blogger Courtney Sanders. As a college student studying chemical engineering, Sanders developed a hair-care product line. PAGE 20

Sanders' workshop will help women figure out ways to find the best products for their hair. Rene Syler, host of the national show Sweet Retreats, will be doing a workshop on "A Journey of Self-Discovery. "Well, a few years

ago, tragedy struck. After a brief illness that landed me in the hospital, I went back to chemically straightening my hair. What happened? My hair got dry, broke off and fell out! It was a mess! That's when I decided ENOUGH!" explained Rene Syler. As the founder of Good Enough Mother, Syler is a sought-after expert on lifestyle and parenting issues for national talk shows including Today and CNN Headline News.

Dr. Michele Darden-Jefferson will host a workshop on the best foods to maintain a healthy body, skin, hair and nails. original film will return to the franchise as Atlanta A&T’s new band director. Sean is looking to make his mark on his alma mater while dealing with “ghosts” from his past: the dean, Dr. Nia Phillips (LeToya Luckett), his brother, Kevin Taylor (Deray Davis) and original “Drumline” favorite, Devon Miles (Nick Cannon). “Drumline: A New Beat” is the next movie fueling VH1’s successful momentum into the

scripted arena. VH1 delivered the highest-rated original cable movie of 2013 among adults 18-49 with “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story.” 4.5 million total viewers tuned in for its October 21 premiere, which earned a 2.9 rating in the adult 18-49 demo and rated as the mosttweeted TV topic that day, generating over 2 million tweets. “Drumline: A New Beat” is executive produced by Wendy Finerman.

METHODISM’S BREADBASKET hosts CHARITY CONCERT and SILENT AUCTION Methodism’s Breadbasket (MBB) will host “A Night at the Arboretum” benefit concert and silent auction Friday, October 24, 2014, at the Dallas Arboretum. This annual fundraiser, which begins at 7:00 p.m., features musical artists Alfrelynn Roberts & Friends, and Charles Winslow, Jr. and The Dallas Jazz Quartet. Complimentary hors d’oeuvre and beverages, free parking, and chances to win great door prizes are included with this event. Early-bird tickets are $45 per person or $80 per pair, and may be purchased through Eventbrite.com (search “Methodism”; no added fees) or by calling MBB at 214.324.3440.

“This event provides a major portion of our annual funding,” says Ivan Tatum, chair of MBB’s board of directors. “It’s especially important this year; our goal is to raise $25,000 so that we can increase our service capacity next year.” MBB recently moved to Owenwood United Methodist Church, which has a commercial kitchen, and intends to launch a summer feeding program in 2015. “Our secondary goal is to modify our services to a more holistic, casemanagement style that allows us to assess clients’ needs and then refer them to programs such as vocational training, reading literacy, health care, and other resources. We are convicted that our mission should be not only to offer short-term sustenance but also to help our clients increase their self-sufficiency and ability to earn a living wage, and to walk with them along the way,” Mr. Tatum explained.

Parkland recognizes extraordinary nurses

National DAISY awards implemented for inpatient, outpatient nurses DALLAS – Each month two nurses at Parkland Health & Hospital System will be honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize nurses who demonstrate outstanding clinical skills and compassionate care. The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is an international program based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. In 1999, Barnes, 33, died from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. Last week Michelle Burkhardt, RN-BC, received Parkland’s first inpatient DAISY award. Burkhardt, who works in a surgery unit,

was nominated by her peers for the compassion shown to every patient in her area. In fact, many of her patients return to Parkland just to visit Burkhardt and update her on their progress. Vanessa Grifaldo, RN, a nurse at Parkland’s Vickery Health Center, received the award for the outpatient/community medicine setting. Grifaldo was described as “a devoted, authentic employee who not only works hard but works smart. She exhibits high standards and excellent performance” at all times. “We are proud to be among the hospitals participating in the DAISY Award program. Nurses are heroes every day,” said Ron Laxton, DNP, RN, Parkland’s Chief Operating Officer and interim Chief Nursing Officer. “Given the current national nursing shortage, The DAISY Award could not be launched at a better time.” For their efforts Burkhardt and Grifaldo received a certificate commending them for being an “extraordinary nurse.” The certificate reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly

meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” The honorees also received a DAISY recognition pin and a sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. DAISY honorees are also recognized on the national DAISY Foundation website. “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night,” said Bonnie Barnes, President and CoFounder of The DAISY Foundation. “Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Parkland are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.” For more information on The DAISY Awards, visit their website at www.DAISYfoundation.org

The Long and Winding Road Light rail, Trinity River road highly scrutinized in South Dallas

By Patrice J. Holmes

editorial@dallasweekly.com

Studies by the University of Texas at Dallas Institute of Urban Policy, United Way and Texas A&M are taking place now to assess the quality of life in the South Dallas community before billion dollar projects involving the new DART Light Rail and the Trinity

Toll Road are brought to the area. Some construction has begun with the demolition of homes to follow later this year. At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward,

the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes

Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
