Message to the People...
Lest We Forget Domestic violence 11
When I arrived on the campus of Texas Woman’s University, I was full of energy and immediately engaged my journalism students in a discussion about what was going on in New York, DC and Pennsylvania. I told the students to take note, that what was occurring was probably the biggest story of their lifetime! Little did I know that there would be so many more “big” stories to come. Many were fearful and conspiracy theories were flying back and forth as we all tried to make sense out of the senselessness.
My Day 14
For that class, and many that followed, we talked about the terroristic acts and the media coverage as the many tragic stories unfolded. There were some very emotional exchanges. Many were frightened and some were angry. We talked about the dreams denied, the lives unfulfilled, the hopelessness and the trauma; as well as those who stepped out of their comfort zones and their private worlds, to come to the benefit of others. Just like with any tragedy, there are the stories of heroism. But, sadly, there are also the stories of con artists, opportunists and major scams.
Helen Burns Jackson 15
Hair Care Moguls Renee Cottrell Brown and Eric Brown told of their September 11 experience and described a horrific journey from their hotel in New York. They were recipients of the good will of Americans as they traveled the streets and public transportation in their bedclothes. During those eventful days, people really didn’t see color. They saw human beings, suffering and in need of help. It was an emotional time, one of many in our lifetime, but if we really realize the gravity of the times we’re in right now; we’d realize that things are just as tragic and the stories are just as “big!” Sure there are outside forces that want to take us down. I think, however that there are those who would agree that we are imploding from within. We have seen the enemy and that enemy is US!

I didn’t stutter, nor did I say, “you, me, he, she or I.” I said, “us.” And we must ask ourselves, “what will our descendants say about us? Will they be proud and full of praise for what their ancestors did during their time on this earth or will they talk about us with disdain, pity and embarrassment?” Those who served and fought valiantly and gave selflessly, not only for September 11, but day-today; I say “thank you!” Whatever this world we leave behind is, it would be a lot worse, were it not for you!

My position on the Iran agreement By Hon. Eddie Bernice Johnson Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
by Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Energy Dr. Ernest J. Moniz, as a “landmark agreement.” It would be irresponsible to reject this diplomatic movement towards stability and peace.
After careful consideration I am in full support of the historical nuclear weapons agreement between the United States, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany and Iran. The agreement is in the best interests of our country, our major allies in the Middle East, and the global community. The agreement, which will face Congressional scrutiny, has won support from more than one hundred former American diplomats. These experienced Republicans and Democrats describe the deal, negotiated
“Once properly implemented, this comprehensive and rigorously negotiated agreement can be an effective instrument in arresting Iran’s nuclear program and prevent the spread of nuclear weapons in the volatile and vitally important region of the Middle East,” the former diplomats wrote in a letter to the White House. Twenty-nine top American scientists have also endorsed the deal, noting that it will “advance the cause of peace and security in the Middle East and can serve as a guidepost for future nonproliferation agreements.” The group of scientists includes six Noble Laureates. In a letter to President Barack
Obama, these experts pointed out that Iran was only “a few weeks away” from having fuel for nuclear weapons. The agreement would stop Iran’s nuclear program, the scientists wrote. Under the agreement, Iran agrees that it will not develop or acquire a nuclear weapon. The deal also includes a permanent ban on Iran’s development of key nuclear weapon components and is based on four clear objectives, blocking the highly enriched uranium route, allowing no path to plutonium, intensive monitoring, and incentives for compliance. Without the agreement there will be no restraints on Iran’s nuclear program. There would more than likely be an arms race to acquire and develop nuclear weapons by various nations in the Middle East.
the best interests of the global community. Currently eighty members of the House of Representatives and thirtyfour members of the Senate have voiced their support for the deal. Lawmakers have nearly 60 days to review the agreement. If Congress votes to kill the deal, President Obama will use his veto power. A two-thirds majority vote in the Senate is required to override a Presidential veto. It is my firm belief that if this deal is not implemented the world risks devastating military conflict. I urge my Congressional colleagues to support the agreement.
Such a climate would not be in the best interest of our country, and certainly not in

BR INGING ENLIGHTENING, EDUC ATIONAL, EMPOWERING, INSPIRING, THOUGHT-PROVOKING INFORMATION Baton Rouge-area woman’s death is cause for domestic violence awareness
Taking up arms as means of self-defense remains option for victims of one
PART 2 By Donald Lee
In 2011, following the attempted rape of a Spartanburg, S.C., woman by a man who was convicted and is now serving prison time in her attack, a sheriff made an appeal to women to go out and get concealed weapons permits and then begin carrying guns to protect themselves. And just last month a sheriff in south Louisiana was so upset by the merciless killing of a Baton Rogue-area woman who’d reported abuse in her marriage that he, too, called on women to take the necessary steps toward obtaining concealed weapons permits for self-protection. “Use a system, use a system, use a system,” Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley said unapologetically. “You know what else? Get your concealed weapon permit. Ladies, learn how to safely handle a weapon, learn how to safely store a weapon. And when you’re in a situation like this, shoot him in the back yard before he gets in your house. Drop him. I mean, I’m serious.” In the Spartanburg incident, the county sheriff, Chuck Wright, offered the same advice. “I don’t want you to go for the Mace,” he said. “I want you to go for the concealed weapons permit.” There are certain kinds of guns that can be used where precision isn’t altogether necessary, Wright reportedly said. “They got one called ‘The Judge’ that shoots a .45 or a .410 shell,” he told Reuters News Agency. “You ain’t gotta be accurate. You just gotta get close.” “ … I really think that would send a message to some of these people that can’t control themselves that you better be really cautious who you mess with because they might be armed,” Wright said. While Barbra Upshaw of suburban Dallas has never been in an abusive relationship, she still considers it important for her to frequent the shooting range. “My only influence for learning to shoot is for my own protection against anything,” Upshaw says. “I’m a single parent that is in and out at all times. As far as dating: Any signs of control, and I would let those men go. “I don’t know how I would feel if I was in an abusive relationship,” she says. “I just pray that women don’t dismiss the signs that are in front of us at times.” Rachel Everhart, 44, of Indianapolis, knows first-hand what it is to be in an abusive relationship. “I was strapped to a bed, raped, bitten, suffocated — tortured for hours, really,” she recalls
Dallas resident Barbra Upshaw
unforgettable incident that comes to mind. “He read to me from the Bible for at least 20 minutes after he was done telling me it was all my fault.” Everhart said after that ordeal, she reported it to the police, her husband was arrested and booked into jail. She then filed for a divorce. She was married 10 years and has been divorced for seven. God has made her stronger through her experience, says Everhart, founder of Beyond My Life Ministries, an organization established to help other women and their families. “I’m more of a fighter,” she says referring to an inner-strength she now has despite her ex-husband being out of jail and doing things to try to negatively impact her life. “I don’t fear him anymore.” According to statistics reported by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, http:// www.ncadv.org, 72 percent of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner; 94 percent of the victims of these murder suicides are female. In addition, one in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90 percent of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence. Some 19.3 million women and 5.1 million men in the United States have been stalked in their lifetime. Another 60.8 percent of female stalking victims and 43.5 percent men reported being stalked by a current or former intimate partner. And on a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide. Micheal Bishop, a Houston-based Texas State Trooper and self-defense instructor, says there is something women and men who have been stalked, abused or bullied must remember.
“You have a right to bear arms. You have a right to defend yourself,” he says. Bishop adds that while formally seeking a protective order against an abuser through the courts is not a bad idea (from a documentation standpoint), there are other forms of documentation that are just as effective in court. “First of all, you can just issue a ‘no trespass’ warning. People will say, ‘How do you do that?’ You could just send an e-mail. You could say, ‘Don’t come by my house anymore,’ ” Bishop says. “Or better yet, you can even send an e-mail or a text that says, ‘Please, do not contact me anymore. Please do not bother me anymore — me or my children. I am not interested in you.’ “You can even say, ‘I’m fearful for my life when I’m around you,’ ” Bishop says. “ … I would send it to him, myself, and carbon copy as many police departments as I can.” According to http:// www.domesticviolencestatistics.org, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women — more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. Donald Lee is a free-lance journalist, author and pastor. He can be contacted at (225) 773-2248 or LeeDonaldJ@yahoo.com. This is the second in a weekly series of articles Lee is writing on domestic abuse and what victims can do to protect themselves, including physically. Spiritually Speaking
Rumor Has It,They Knew You When By James A. Washington
I’m not sure whether or not I’ve talked about my faith walk from the point of view of those individuals who have tracked my progress from the beginning until now. They seem to have fallen into two quite different categories. The first group who noticed included those Christians around me, who like me, rejoiced in my rebirth. A lot of the columns I’ve written were about those who prayed and rejoiced and breathed a sigh of relief at the mere thought of a new beginning for me. Discovery would be an appropriate word to use here. I know as a result, I’ve discovered more about people I thought I knew after being saved than I ever thought possible before I was saved. My analogy is that I saw the world and my friends as old black and white movies. Now the come across in technicolor and surround sound. It seems that being kindred spirits in Christ, we got it like that now. Now the second group included those individuals who couldn’t and still can’t relate to me now. There were and are so called friends of mine in this group too. It’s
hard to explain but bible study, tithing, regular church attendance, prayer, praise and I guess an honest attempt at wholesome living can bring out an unusual reaction in some folk. I know because I used to be one of those people who avoided anyone and anything that invited God into my life. I wasn’t malicious or anything. It just wasn’t part of my program. So I understood the reaction I was getting from those in this group. Some thought it was a phase, others and addiction and still others felt I was on some kind of moral guilt trip that I’d just get over. Many couldn’t see the serious nature of my transformation because they too saw
me only in terms of black and white. Others just refused to accept God as the reason that my behavior changed. There just had to be another reason. I must have a hidden agenda. Salvation and eternity are vague concepts. What does eternity have to do with right here, right now? What is so easy to acknowledge in church and in bible study is at times impossible, difficult at best, to communicate elsewhere to people who knew you when and did all those things with you that you don’t do anymore. It can be tough. If it were not for those Christians who can and do relate to this, those who know where they are today compared to where they were yesterday, I might still see the world as only black and white filled with a bunch of gray people. Believe me, technicolor is better. That’s why it is so easy for me to relate to Paul. You want to talk about a transformation! It’s a wonder Paul lived to tell anyone about Jesus. His life before the road to Damascus enlightenment is a testament to what I’m talking about. Why should anyone believe anything that came from Paul’s murderous mouth? I suppose the answer in hindsight is a pretty good one. The words that came out of Paul’s mouth were indeed put there by Jesus; the same Christ who knocked me down and picked me up as He also did Paul. I’ve changed because I had no choice in this matter. And if you’re saved, you don’t either. But don’t worry about it. This is a new me and a new you with a new life and new responsibilities. It is our willing obligation to at least give the Lord our best shot. As the commercial goes, ‘just do it.’ I think you’ll find as Paul did that the point is who you have become and not how others view you. Sooner or later they’ll come to understand the change is real and they’ll just have to adjust to you or disappear. If they don’t, you will. It’s not easy but nobody said it would be. Stay the course and may God bless and keep you always.

An International Seminary My Day By Dr. J. Ester Davis PHOTOS BY WALLACE FAGGETT
Dallas is bountifully blessed with everything. Grace International Seminary is a jewel among us and they recently held their Summer Commencement as mentioned in my earlier column, “Ask Dr. Hollie.” Grace International Seminary is global indeed. Some of the graduates traveled to receive their Doctorate of Divinity Degrees from Grace International Seminary and Trinity International Seminary. Let me share a few notes with you from Judge Yoo’s master script. Master of Ceremony Judge Yoo, proudly presides over Dallas County Criminal Court #8. She is a beloved personality and an accessible public servant all over the community she serves and beyond. I am going to borrow a copy of the script so I can righteously do justice to these honorees with divinity degrees. But until then, I will interpret my “shakey” shorthand and give you a brief rundown. Sitting in the packed auditorium of mixed clergy, friends, family, alumni, overwhelming globalness, I reflected on the world that is “sensationally” framed to us on network media and the world of nurtured reality I was in the midst of at this commencement. A distinct highlight of the afternoon was a musical selection by the Nirankari Babaji Mission Youth Choir. Listening to the MC read the resume of Bishop Dr. Justice Ekejibi, Boston, Massachusetts, (his first name is Justice), I had to meet him afterwards. He is a renown speaker in West Africa, Europe and throughout the United States. Even with his universally laced credentials he was graciously humbling to speak with. Mike Ghouse, Washington, D. C., another honoree, is a friend. Mike is a daily blogger, with a strong media presence, Huffington Press among

IN MEMORIAM HELEN BURNS JACKSON Helen Burns Jackson, the mother of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the civil rights activist, has died at 92, according to The Associated Press. Jackson told The Associated Press that his mother died early Monday in her longtime hometown of Greenville, South Carolina. She had been in failing health for some time, he said. "She was an incredible woman blessed with a long life," Jackson said. Jackson said his mother was a talented musician who was active in the church to which she belonged. He credited his mother for inspiring much of his community activism. Born in 1923, Helen Burns Jackson "lived under very trying circumstances, but she was so determined to make a contribution," her son said. Jackson said his mother had two scholarships to attend college, but when she became pregnant with him, she chose not to go, according to her obituary by the AP. She later became a cosmetologist. "She helped a lot of people," Jackson told The Greenville News a few days before she died. "That's mostly what I remember about Mother is some people would call and say 'I need my hair to be dressed, but I don't have any money.' She would say, 'Come on anyhow.'" Helen Burns Jackson’s life will be celebrated Sunday and Monday at Springfield Baptist Church in Greenville,. A public viewing will be held from 4-6 p.m. Sunday followed by a celebratory musical at 6 p.m. at Springfield Baptist Church, 600 E. McBee Ave., Greenville. The celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, also at Springfield. Watkins, Garrett and Woods Mortuary. Mrs. Jackson, who had been in declining health for several years, died at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
CALVIN J. SPANN Calvin J. Spann (November 28, 1924 – September 6, 2015) was an original Tuskegee Airman and fighter pilot with the 100th Fighter Squadron of the 332nd Fighter Group. Spann received his wings from the Tuskegee Flight School as a part of the graduating class of 44G. As a member of the United States Army Air Corps, he served in Europe during World War II, where Spann flew 26 combat missions before the end of the war in the European Theatre. During Spann's wartime service (1944–1946), he was assigned to the 332nd Fighter Group under the command of Col. Benjamin O. Davis Jr., who on September 2, 1941, was the first
PAGE 15
African American officer to solo an aircraft under the U.S. Army Air Corps. Davis would later rise to the rank of General in the United States Air Force. While assigned to the 332nd, he flew in the longest bomber escort mission of 15th Air Force, a 1600-mile round trip mission on March 24, 1945,[3] from Ramitelli, Italy, to Berlin, Germany, to destroy a Daimler-Benz manufacturing facility under the leadership of his squadron commander, Captain Roscoe Brown. On February 28, 2006, the U.S. Congress approved a bill authorizing President George W. Bush to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the Tuskegee Airmen, the highest civilian honor awarded by the United States.
CALVIN GEORGE MORET
Calvin George Moret entered the military in 1943 and trained as a military pilot at Tuskegee, Alabama, receiving his wings and commission as a Flight Officer on November 20, 1944. His preparation for overseas combat duty continued through the end of the war in Europe and then through the end of the war in the Pacific. He was discharged from military service on January 31, 1946. Following his discharge from military duty he returned to the family printing business, Moret Press, started by his father in 1932. The need for an in-house linotype machine prompted him to seek a school for this purpose outside of New Orleans because segregation laws at the time would not allow him to study at Delgado Trade School. He was able to gain admission as a student in the printing department at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and completed the course. Mr. Moret’s flying experience did not stop upon discharge from the military. In the spring of 1949, he and his brother Adolph, who had learned to fly before the war, formed a flying club. They, along with about 20 other men, purchased a 3-place Piper Super Cruiser airplane and hangered it at Lakefront Airport in New Orleans till the summer of 1953. They taught a number of the members to fly. On June 17, 2008, as a result of Hurricane Katrina and the flooding aftermath that decimated the city, Moret Press was destroyed and the family was separated for months. The business has not operated since the Friday before the hurricane struck. Following the release of “The Tuskegee Airmen” movie in 1995, Mr. Moret has frequently lectured about his experiences and promoting the proud history of AfricanAmerican accomplishments in American life. In 2007, Mr. Moret was present when the Tuskegee Airmen received the Congressional Gold Medal in the rotunda of the nation’s capitol. He died September 12. He was 90.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.”

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes
Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no” and voting “yes” mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
