Volunteerism spirit alive and well at American Airlines Sure, American Airlines is dealing with some serious issues right now. When you take into consideration: bankruptcy court, union negotiations, layoffs, alleged fraudulent mechanical issues and delays and the economy, well I am sure employees would say that these are not the best of times! Still you have to say kudos to a corporation that understands the significance of being a good corporate citizen and the employees who display an overwhelming spirit of volunteerism. While American Airlines employees are concerned about whether or not they will be receiving a pink slip; they are still taking time out to help others. Recently legendary athletes and celebrities joined forces with American Airlines/American Eagle for the 2nd annual Help for Haiti Celebrity Golf Tournament. Actor Earl Billings, former Dallas Cowboys Ed “Too Tallâ€? Jones and Everson Walls, actor Basil Wallace, former NBA Players Spud Webb and Moses Malone were among the celebs committed to the celebrity golf tournament and gala, where athletes, actors and philanthropists united to raise continued awareness and funding for medical training in Lamardelle, Haiti in support of the island’s redevelopment efforts after the 2010 earthquake. According to American Airlines officials, “Having served Haiti for over 40 years, American Airlines was the first commercial airline on the scene following the devastating January 12, 2010, earthquake that struck Haiti. The airline flew 30 missions into Haiti in the days following the earthquake, transporting relief workers, medical personnel and more than 400,000 pounds of humanitarian aid and evacuating more than 700 people. American Airlines is dedicated to the uplifting and rebuilding of Haiti, making it an important cornerstone in their Caribbean operations. American Airlines is proud to be a contributor to Haiti’s economic development, flying not only hundreds of thousands of passengers every year, but millions of pounds of cargo and now assisting with securing funding for medical training.â€? Over the years, American Airlines has been a strong supporter of the Don’t Believe the Hype Foundation and the employees can be found volunteering on a number of different fronts--whether it was for UNCF, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Paul Quinn College or KwanzaaFest; I could go on and on about the level of professionalism and level of commitment from the employees. They are great! As Mr. Dick Gregory celebrated his 80th birthday in Dallas earlier this year, Frances Cade, Lillian Greer, Lorna Hunter, Allison Jones Todd, Barbara Ladson, Debbie Maxberry, Pamela Pujo, Cheryl Robinson, Marian Sims, Frances Estelle, La’Wonda Peoples, Kimberly Brown, Margo Anthony, Lisa Young, Valerie Durant and Kendra Washington were front and center, providing a level of professionalism and elegance to a weekend of events. CURRY: 15 Memorable Quotes from the Democratic Convention #15 – Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (Mo.): “Congress is unable to do the work of the American people because too many politicians believe that compromise means capitulation. This must change, because George E. Curry just as bees cannot sting and make honey at the same time, members of Congress cannot simultaneously make passionate enemies and expect political progress.â€?  #14 – Rep. Barney Frank (Mass.): “When it comes to Wall Street reform, you'd think Republicans have amnesia. Like they've forgotten how we got into the Great Recession in the first place. Did they forget they were in power leading up to the crisis? That it was their plan that set Wall Street free and crashed the economy? Did they forget that this whole crisis started because banks gave out loans they knew people couldn't pay? That those banks were gambling with our money? Using the kinds of financial tricks only Mitt Romney's accountant would understand?â€?   #13 – Newark Mayor Cory Booker:

â€œWhen your country is in a costly war with our soldiers sacrificing abroad and our nation is facing a debt crisis at home, being asked to pay your fair share isn’t class warfare. It’s patriotism.â€?   #12 – Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick  â€œMitt Romney talks a lot about all the things he's fixed. I can tell you that Massachusetts wasn't one of them. He's a fine fellow and a great salesman, but as governor he was more interested in having the job than doing it.â€?   #11 – Former Florida Republican Gov. Charlie Christ:  â€œHalf a century ago, Ronald Reagan, the man whose relentless optimism inspired me to enter politics, famously said that he

didn’t leave the Democratic Party; the party left him. I can certainly relate. I didn’t leave the Republican Party; it left me. Then again, as my friend Jeb Bush recently noted, Reagan himself would have been too moderate and too reasonable for today’s GOP.â€?   #10- Massachusetts Senatorial Candidate Elizabeth Warren:  "After all, Mitt Romney's the guy who said corporations are people. No, Governor Romney, corporations are not people. People have hearts, they have kids, they get jobs, they get sick, they cry, they dance. They live, they love, and they die. And that matters. That matters. That matters because we don't run this country for corporations, we run it for people."  #9 – First Lady Michelle Obama: Â

â€œBarack knows the American Dream because he’s lived it‌and he wants everyone in this country to have that same opportunity, no matter who we are, or where we’re from, or what we look like, or who we love. And he believes that when you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity‌you do not slam it shut behind you‌you reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed.â€?   #8- HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius:  â€œWhat's missing from the Romney-Ryan plan for Medicare is Medicare. Instead of the Medicare guarantee, Republicans would give seniors a voucher that limits what is covered.â€?   #7 - Rep. Luis Gutierrez (Ill.):  â€œPresident Obama is protecting immigrants. Mitt Romney wants to send them back. This election will determine whether high school valedictorians, football team captains, and student council presidents will be treated with respect – or treated like suspects.â€?   #6- Musician James Taylor:  "It's an empty chair, it makes you nervous, don't worry — I'm going to sit on it. going to talk to it."  #5 – Former President Bill Clinton:  â€œIn Tampa, the Republican argument against the president’s re-election was actually pretty simple – pretty snappy. It went something like this: ‘We left him a total mess. He hasn’t cleaned it up fast enough. So fire him and put us back in.’â€?   #4- Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley:  â€œMitt Romney and Paul Ryan now say they want to take America back. And so we ask: Back to what? Back to the failed policies that drove us into a deep recession? Back to the days of record job losses? Back to the days when insurance companies called being a woman a ‘pre-existing condition’? No, thank you. I don't want to go back.â€?   #3- The late Senator Ted Kennedy (clip from 1994 debate with Mitt Romney):

â€œI have supported Roe v. Wade. I am prochoice. My opponent is multiple-choice.â€?   #2 – Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm:  â€œMitt Romney loves our lakes and our trees. He loves our cars so much, they even have their own elevator. But the people who design and build and sell those cars? Well, in Romney’s world, the cars get the elevator, and the workers get the shaft!â€?   #1- Ted Strickland, former Ohio governor:  â€œIf Mitt was Santa Claus, he'd fire the reindeer and outsource the elves." PERSPECTIVES The Journal of Steffanie Rivers:

Honey Boo Boo Child! First it was “Toddlers and Tiaras” a reality TV show about pint-sized pageant contestants. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, Steffanie Rivers somebody at the TLC network decided to give the most outrageous tiara tot and her family their own show. It’s like when TV news crews show up in the neighborhood and interview people walking around outside wearing hair curlers with missing teeth: They have to know this is not the best representative, but its lights, camera, action nevertheless. Apparently TLC, previously known as The Learning Channel, is teaching viewers that ratings are more important than quality programming. That’s what I’ve concluded after seeing video promos of “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo Child,” --the name of their latest reality TV show offering. I can’t bring myself to watch a full episode. I only can watch in small servings. The show is named after the pudgy six-year old who has a pet pig, eats cheese puffs for breakfast and swigs something she calls “gogo juice” to boost her mood during pageant events. All this is done under the watchful eye of her mother. Let’s just say the family resemblance is apparent. Every family member has a nickname, they feed Mountain Dew to a one-month old infant, they bob for pig’s feet instead of apples, but they don’t seem to value books or visits to the library. Honey Boo Boo, whose birth name is Alana Thompson, probably has more pageant trophies than she knows how to count, but she proudly proclaims that “a dollar makes me holler!” It’s another trait she picked up from her mother whose nickname is “the coupon queen.” Their home looks like a mini Sam’s Wholesale. Nobody needs that much toilet tissue and deodorant except a convenience store! If you ever wondered how rural White America lives, this is the show for you. The trouble is, I don’t think this family realizes that people are laughing at them – not with them and I don’t think they care either way. Possibly after a few episodes Honey Boo Boo’s parents will realize any self-esteem boost she gets from pageant competition could be destroyed when she looks back at her “reality” a few years from now. They better redneck-cognize before it’s too late. Steffanie is a freelance journalist living in the Dallas, Texas metroplex. Send comments, questions and speaking requests to teamtcb.tcb@ gmail.com.

Okay, I get this forgiveness concept, but... Bishop T.D. Jakes, senior pastor of The Potter’s House, is working my nerves-actually he is on my last nerve and working it hard! He is really challenging me and I am trying desperately to rise to the occasion! Bishop Jakes is focusing on the importance of forgiveness and in addition to holding “Forgiveness Sunday,” delivering a message on the and importance of “letting go of trespasses and offenses and moving

beyond the trauma and disappointment of the past,” he recently appeared on Steve Harvey’s television talk show, spreading a message of forgiveness. He also encouraged church goers to let go of their pasts in a symbolic release of more than 8,000 balloons. Participants were provided “white environmentally-friendly balloons,” with the inscription, “Let It Go.” They wrote their grievances on the balloons and released their past hurts and grief with them. Had I been in attendance, I know I would have had to grab at least 20 balloons

because I have let about that many people violate my trust. The Bishop has another book, “Let it Go: Forgive So You Can Be Forgiven” which is a bestseller. I should have purchased the book, right off the printing presses because lately I am having a hard time forgiving some folks; especially when they don’t even seem to care about wanting forgiveness. Sure in the past I was better at forgiving. I have always given thanks for the blessings I have received from people who have made up for the folks who break promises, refuse to honor commitments and constantly try to pull one over on anyone who displays a generous heart. It gets frustrating, though, when you give, not because you want something in return, but because it is in your heart, only to run across people who are users. Bishop, how do you forgive that person when it is not in that person’s heart to do the right thing? Help me understand the message that you shouldn’t loan to someone if you can’t give it away. How about don’t borrow if you have no intention of paying it back or returning it? You see, I grew up reciting the mantra, “my word is bond.” As I have gotten older, I have found that more and more people have a different mantra, “my word ain’t about la dee da!” I am talking about accountability here. I don’t want to stop being a giving and loving person because I have encountered people who should not be in my life. Also I don’t want to discount all the outstanding people I have in my life because I love them dearly. I know, “kiss a few frogs” or “one bad

apple.” I realize that I am a work in progress because when I have friends who say, “pray,” I wonder if they can hear the thoughts in my head. They may be asking Cheryl Smith me to “pray for forgiveness” while I am “praying that I won’t retaliate in a big way.” Bishop Jakes is pretty astute. “Let it Go: Forgive So You Can Be Forgiven” is coming at a time when I really need it. Have you ever listened to someone telling you something that you know is right and for your own good. Bishop Jakes’ message is similar to that of the Sankofa bird,--symbolizing one taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress through the benevolent use of knowledge. Negative baggage keeps you from making positive progress, so I had better take heed and also remember one of my favorite message -- Don’t let yesterdays use up your todays. Maybe there are others out there like me who also need to “Let it Go.” This is Just One African American Woman’s Opinion. What’s yours? Addressing the ability to afford higher education Last month many students returned to college, while others entered college for the first time. A large number had a different experience. Sadly many students dropped Hon. Helen Giddings out and others were denied the excitement of the first day of college because of the inability to pay. Unfortunately rising tuition has priced many middle class students out of college. In the aftermath, the U.S. has dropped to rank 12th in the percentage of college graduates compared to other countries. Every student who wants to go to college should be able to do so if they are willing to put together the funding through some combination of working, savings, grants, financial aid and student loans. It is not uncommon today for students to work three jobs, causing many to miss the “ideal” of

graduating in 4 or 5 years. In March of 2012, President Barack Obama signed into law student loan legislation that was upheld by the Supreme Court in June 2012. This legislation provides students with some relief regarding their repayment options. The new legislation changed the repayment plan options by putting in place an “income based repayment plan” that limits the borrowers payment obligation to 10% of their monthly income. As President Bill Clinton explained recently, some graduates who might want to take a job as a teacher or police officer may be better able to do so. Additionally, under the new legislation debt forgiveness has been lowered to 20 years. These may seem like small changes, however for a college graduate first entering the workforce, the ability to have their repayment based on how much they actually

earn will be a huge relief. Prior to this legislation, private banks provided the student loans, and in turn the federal government would pay these banks a fee for providing and managing the loan. This legislation cut out the middle man, and by doing so freed up $68 billion over the next 11 years. This money will be used for the Pell grant program which provides grants to the neediest students attending an institution of higher education. Over the last few years students graduate with a degree, but many come to realize they left college with a mountain of debt. The bad economy and tough job market have made it difficult for those newly graduated students to find employment in their field Giddings, page 15 of expertise.SeeConsequently they are not

Go Red For Women® and Macy’s join forces to ease burden, drive diversity in medicine

Dallas, TX -- Tuition hikes at colleges and universities across the nation are putting the squeeze on many young people and forcing families to find new ways to pay for higher education or consider forgoing college altogether. In an effort to ease the burden to students during these rough economic times and increase the number of underrepresented minorities in medicine, the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women(TM) and Macy's, its national sponsor, offer the Go Red(TM) Multicultural Scholarship Fund. Sixteen $2,500 national scholarships are being offered for a second year to multicultural women pursuing higher education in health care. As part of its Go Red For Women movement, the association strives to expand the pipeline of much-needed diverse nursing, medical and allied health students and address important gaps in treatment that can lead to heart health disparities. Deadline for entry is November 30, 2012. "The recruitment of talented diverse young women into the healthcare field is a critical step in the delivery of quality, culturally

sensitive patient-centered care. In these challenging economic times, the Go Red Multicultural Scholarship Fund will help ensure the continued success of a diverse group of young women in their healthcare education journey," said Dr. Jennifer Mieres, Senior Vice President, Office of Community and Public Health, Chief Diversity

"The American Heart Association is in a unique position to be a leader in helping to eliminate cardiovascular disease and health disparities by providing scholarships to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in medicine," said Dr. Icilma Fergus, director of the Cardiovascular Disparities Center at Mount Sinai Hospital and president-elect for the Association of Black Cardiologists. Only 6.7 percent of AfricanAmericans and 7.5 percent of Hispanics made up the total

Only 5.4 percent of African-Americans and 3.6 percent of Hispanics in the nation are Registered Nurses (RNs), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. "The American Heart Association's Go Red Multicultural Scholarship provides a muchneeded vehicle during these tough financial times to help minority women achieve their dream of becoming healthcare professionals," said Dr. Lynne Holden, physician and president of Mentors in Medicine. "There is a unique opportunity to save millions of lives by promoting heart heath and increasing awareness of heart disease, which is the No. 1 killer in the U.S." The Go Red(TM) Multicultural Scholarship is made possible by the Macy's Multicultural Fund. Parkland joins effort to increase breastfeeding rates in U.S. hospitals DALLAS – Parkland Health & Hospital System has been selected to participate in Best Fed Beginnings, a first-of-its kind national effort to improve breast feeding rates in states where rates are currently the lowest. Parkland joins 89 other hospitals through this initiative to work together in a 22-month learning collaborative, using proven quality improvement methods to transform their maternity care services in pursuit of “Baby-Friendly” designation. “For women who plan to breastfeed, the hospital experience strongly influences a mother’s ability to start and continue breastfeeding,” said Anne Tudhope, Vice President of Nursing for Parkland’s Women and Infants’ Specialty Health. “We already took the first step toward mother and baby bonding last year with our Rooming-In program, which allows mothers and babies to spend as much time together as possible while in the hospital. “This is one of the many ways to ensure that mothers delivering at Parkland who intend to breastfeed

are fully supported.” how to breastfeed and maintain lactation even Although breastwhen separated from feeding is one of infants and encouraging the most effective unrestricted breastfeeding. preventive health Breastfeeding rates are measures for infants higher and disparities in and mothers, half of these rates are virtually U.S.-born babies are given formula within Charlie Homer, MD, MPH eliminated in hospitals that achieve this status. the first week, and by 9 months, only 31 percent of babies “We look forward to working with are breastfeeding at all. For infants, it decreases the incidence

and severity of many infectious diseases, reduces infant mortality and supports neurodevelopment optimally. It also decreases infants’ risk of becoming obese later in childhood. For mothers, breastfeeding decreases the risks of breast and ovarian cancers, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease.

ROYCE WEST

COVER STORY BY CHERYL SMITH

is one of the most powerful men in not only the state of Texas, but

Here’s just a snapshot of Royce West -- the family man, father, husband, senator, attorney, son, community servant and leader, Deacon, friend, statesman, fraternity brother and mentor.

COVER STORY

His influence is far reaching, even across the waters to other continents. As he celebrates another milestone in his life--turning 60 years old, he continues to show why he is the epitome of service and commitment. Next year he will have served 20 years as a Texas State senator, representing Dallas. It is an understatement to say he has led an impressive life-- the young man who has continued to lift as he climbs. Ella Goode Johnson and her husband, Willie Earl, have known Sen. West for years. She had nothing but kind words for him, and not just because he and Willie Earl are fraternity brothers or that the two men share the same birth date, September 26. “Among the qualities of identifying effective leaders is having the ability to connect with people,” said Ms. Johnson, who is a former twoterm president of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. And very active community servant. “Senator West has championed that quality both personally and professionally. “ This managing partner of West & Associates L.L.P., he was admitted to the State of Bar of Texas in 1979 after receiving his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degrees from the University of Texas at Arlington and his Juris Doctor from the University of Houston in 1979. In college, he was a student athlete, scholar and leader. His legal experience includes serving in the trial division of both the Dallas and Harris counties District Attorney’s Office and private practice since 1986. He served as a Chief Felony Prosecutor at the Dallas County District Attorney Office and he has been a senior partner in the Firm since its inception. Admitted to practice law before all courts in the State of Texas, the Supreme Court of the United States of America, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Sen. West is also a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers, the State Bar of Texas corporate and education law sections, the National Bar Association, the Dallas Bar Association, and the J.L. Turner Legal Association. As a member of the Texas State Senate Atty. West has served on the Finance, Education, State Affairs, Intergovernmental Relations, Health and Human Services, Criminal Justice, and Jurisprudence committees. He currently is the Chairman of the Senate Sub-Committee on Higher Education, and Vice Chairman of the Education Committee. The senator is an active member of Good Street Baptist Church and serves as Vice President for the Board of Directors for Circle Ten Council of Boy Scouts of America. A proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., his bio does not speak to the enormous good that Sen. West has done over the years. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins had his eye on Sen. West for years. He often recalls when prior to running for the senate, Mr. West made a bid for District Attorney. While he was not successful in that race, nothing stopped him from being successful in life.

“Thanks for being a mentor and example to all aspiring elected officials,” said Mr. Watkins as he offered birthday greetings. “You certainly were a mentor to me, and for that I will always be grateful."’ A long-time member of Good Street Baptist Church, where he serves as a Deacon, Sen. West is surrounded by family members who are equally involved and committed. He is married to businesswoman Carol Richard West and oftentimes when his demanding schedule has him crisscrossing the city or state, he can count on Carol, his Chief of Staff Lajuana Barton, his son Royce Jr., to step up and represent. And if they are already on the job, he has a bench that is the envy of many, with veteran designated hitters like Teresa, Kelvin, Myrtis, Joycelyn and others who work tirelessly to assist him in his capacity as senator or attorney-at-law. Family is very important to the Senator and you also won’t find his mother, or his children too far away from him. That family has grown exponentially because of Sen. West’s benevolence! Atty. Cheryl Wattley, who is currently an associate professor at OU, had a lot to say about her colleague and friend, “As I thought back over the years to write this comment, I realized that I have known Royce for almost 30 years. We started together as young lawyers, filled with energy and excitement about practicing law, about making a difference. And yet, it seems like yesterday for Royce has that same enthusiasm and energy, only now he has so many more projects and directions to demand his attention. In reflecting on decades of work and achievement, the one aspect of Royce's many accomplishments and achievements that I will always value is his determination that African American children will have the opportunity for excellence in education. I can still hear his voice after the decision in Hopwood knocking down the admissions policy at the University of Texas saying, ‘we've got to do something; we've got to figure out a way that our kids can get a UT education.’” She continued, “And for Royce, all African American children are ‘his kids.’ The establishment of the Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Academy stands as testimony to not only that interest and commitment but a vision. What better way to marry honoring the work of a force with the African American community, Dr. Conrad, with the future. And that is Royce, blending our history and legacy with opportunities for our children to reach for the stars. Thank you Royce, for 30 years of friendship, for the impact that you have had on our community, and for always having African American children in your heart.” A family man, Sen. West began the Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program and thousands of students from District 23 have participated in this outstanding program that not only provides paid internship opportunities but also provides life skills programming to assist college students with being better prepared to excel in not just the workplace, but in the community. While many are totally unaware of the duties

of a state senator, it is important to understand that starting a program to provide jobs for his constituents, is not something mandated by the Texas Senate. If it were, more would be duplicating his efforts, but that is not the case! And the students who participate not only get a crash case in so many areas, from etiquette, job preparedness and grooming, to the importance of community service and volunteerism. The program is so strong that participants started an alumni association! This is just one example of the impact and influence of Sen. West’s works over the years. Former award-winning television anchor and reporter Ramona Logan said, “Senator Royce West has been a formidable force since he went to the State Capitol. He is one of a few state senators who truly works for the good of all people. He has been able to get things done because he understands how to utilize input from people of different perspectives. The mere fact that he was able to get UNT-Dallas in southern Dallas shows the sheer magnitude of his ability to mobilize different factions for the greater good of the community.” Now a best-selling author, image and media consultant,Ms. Logan also praised the Senator for the work he does year round. “He is definitely an advocate for education especially with the Emmett J. Conrad Internship Program he started to provide internship opportunities for young people,” she said. “And on top of that he has a Heart of Gold!” Radio personality and businessman Willis Johnson is a longtime friend of Senator West and he spoke fondly of his former co-worker. “I met ‘Royce’ in 1976 when we both worked at KKDA. Royce was a weekend sports announcer and that's where we developed our friendship….long before he was Senator West. Our kids were friends over the years, in fact Trecia dated Royce Jr. 20 years ago and Royce Jr. and ReMarcus became golfing buddies with BJ in the last 5 years. BJ and Royce Jr still are today. So it's more than a friendship that I have had with Senator West. He has been my friend and family member.” Mr. Johnson went on to speak about the Senator’s servant leadership. “Of course he has been one of the greatest community leader/ elected official that Dallas has ever had,” said Mr. Johnson “The Conrad program speaks volumes about his commitment to education and his support of Paul Quinn College and UNT Dallas is unmatched. Finally the 10% rule that was put in legislation is just another example of what had been delivered and not just talked about by Royce West. Glad to call him my friend.” And the Senator has been a friend to many. Highly regarded and respected,at the youthful age of 60, there doesn’t seem to be a hint of slowing down. His law practice is thriving and as he prepares for another session in Austin that hopefully will be more productive and not falling victim to partisan politics, the Senator is always optimistic and prepared. Maybe that’s why he hasn’t had any significant opposition in almost two decades!

A special thanks to photographer Wallace Faggett and Ms. Lajuana Barton!

Close your eyes. Imagine that you are a single mother working two low-paying jobs, amille barely making ends meet. Your young daughter has a learning Bradfield difference and your only option to educate her is the failing neighborhood inner city school that provides absolutely no services or support for children who learn differently. Private school tuition is unthinkable in your world. Securing one of the coveted, albeit rare, openings in one of the premiere, tuition-free charter schools is solely based on the luck of the draw, and as fate would have it, after waiting anxiously with hundreds of other hopeful parents, you’re not that lucky. Open your eyes. Now ask yourself, what would you do? This is the premise for 20th Century Fox’s latest theatrical release, WON’T BACK DOWN. Directed by Daniel Barnz and written by Barnz and Brin Hill, WON’T BACK DOWN stars Academy Awardnominated Maggie Gyllenhaal as Jamie Fitzpatrick, a spirited, 30-something, working class single mother who is fed up with her daughter’s failing school, and Academy Award-nominated actress Viola Davis as Nona Alberts, a fellow concerned mother and dedicated teacher who desires to teach at a school where educating children is the top priority. Inspired by real life events, this film tells the story of two mothers from opposite sides of the railroad tracks who unite for a common goal — to achieve a legal takeover of a failing elementary school and transform it into a successful learning facility. Set in Pittsburgh, the drama begins when Jamie attempts to have her daughter, Malia (Emily Alyn Lind), removed from her current class after observing the teacher’s equal-opportunity indifference toward her students. To add insult to injury, Malia has a learning difference and her school does not provide any special programs to address the issue. So what should be simple assignments, like reading aloud, are instead colossal challenges for the shy and understandably frustrated second grader. Jamie faces one disappointment after another as she attempts first to get Malia transferred to Nona’s class, then to land one of only a

Action-packed thrill ride. Check. Futuristic, sci-fi, time travel plot. Check. Well-written screenplay. Check. One veteran Hollywood actor. Check. One young, rising star. Check. Impressive cinematography. Check. Mix these ingredients together and the result is a feature film that is sure to be a major box office hit. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, LOOPER, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, opens in theaters nationwide on September 28, 2012. Fresh off his summer blockbuster success as a crime-fighting ally to the caped crusader in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, Gordon-Levitt plays Joe – a hit man or “looper” hired to get rid of those who are unwanted by the mob. The gangsters send their targets 30 years into the past where a “looper,” like Joe, is waiting to take them out. This is executed through the use of time travel, which is illegal in the future and only available on the black market. Joe appears to be living the life – young and single with all of the money, women and parties he can stand – until the mob decides to “close his loop” (their version of a pink slip) by transporting

A Message from a reader about Clint Eastwood Clint Eastwood has a movie coming out next week “ Trouble With The Curve.” Yes the same Clint Eastwood that tried to marginalize our President at the RNC a few week ago. Now it’s time to return the favor to Mr. Eastwood. Make sure that you are not one of the people sitting in the audience watching this movie. He used the empty chair to make his point, now we are going to use the empty seats at the theaters where this movie is being shown to make our point. I have always liked Eastwood’s movies until he pulled this stupid stunt. Make sure that you send this to everyone you know, the message has to be sent- consequences for your action.

the present. Gordon-Levitt, who thanks to three hours a day in a make-up chair is unrecognizable in a halfway successful attempt to make his physical appearance resemble that of a young Bruce Willis, delivers a solid performance as Joe — a character that is a far cry from his comedic starring role on the hit television series, “3rd Rock from the Sun.” Of course, as usual, Willis, who we have come to admire over the years for his irrefutable ability to breathe life into action movies, does not disappoint as future Joe, who while trying to avoid present-day Joe’s line of fire, is more focused on affecting the outcome of his life by changing past events. Although Gordon-Levitt’s prosthetic nose and exaggerated eyebrows don’t quite result in a dead-on version of a younger Willis, the two actors do a noteworthy job becoming one with their mannerisms and facial expressions. The supporting cast includes Emily Blunt (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA) as Sara, Paul Dano (THERE WILL BE BLOOD) as fellow “looper” Seth, Jeff Daniels (GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK) as mobster Abe and a stunning performance

by child actor, Pierce Gagnon who plays Sara’s son, Cid. Sara, is a single mother who lives with her young son, Cid, on a farm in the middle of nowhere near the sugar cane field where Joe does his “clean up” work. Sara and Cid’s connection isn’t revealed when they are first introduced on screen, but they ultimately play a key role in the film’s biggest twist. Overall, LOOPER is an exhilarating sci-fi thriller that keeps you wanting more. It is fast paced right from the beginning and is full of gripping twists, turns and revelations that continuously build momentum toward the film’s climactic show down. It is without question hands down pure entertainment. So, if it is an escape-from-reality, adrenaline rush movie-going experience that you seek, you should be more than satisfied with this film. A must see! Four and a half reels

Conference, continued from page 9___________ understanding of themselves, get answers and go forward with a passion to change and a new perspective on love.” The conference will be at Grace Church, 4740 Bishop Lynn Morrison, Jr. Western Center Blvd., in Haltom City. “It’s not only for couples. It’s for couples and anyone seeking to be married some day, and it’s free,” Colbert says of the conference. The idea is to reinforce the need for individuals to understand themselves, to have a healthy appreciation of their own self-worth and discern whether someone else has the wholesome spirit that is needed to best complement them. Strong relationships are built on wisdom and humility. And they thrive when those entering into them have genuine, sincere hearts rooted in the spirit of giving. When someone approaches a relationship with the mindset of seeing what they can add to that relationship to help make the other person’s life better, that produces a powerful connection, one that reflects the attributes of God.

But when someone enters into a relationship with a “gimme” attitude, always seeking to make withdrawals from the other person’s heart and rarely (if ever) making deposits, then that not only strains the relationship, but it gradually tears down the other person. So, we want to stress that people have a healthy attitude toward themselves. A person can’t be sufficiently good to someone else if he (or she) has a negative view of himself (or herself). Washington, DC- On September 20th, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) was honored by Open Gov TV for her work in STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) at the STEM Champions Reception. Congresswoman Johnson was awarded the prestigious STEM Champion Award for serving as an innovative leader and advocate for increasing diversity in the STEM fields. “It is an honor to receive the STEM Champion Award and I thank Open Gov TV for recognizing my work in STEM Education,” said Congresswoman Johnson. Congresswoman Johnson hosted her annual Science and Technology Braintrust, which brought together prominent leaders in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields to help influence nearly 300 minority students to become engaged in STEM. Moms travel U.S. empowering parents to navigate their children’s educational journey San Diego, CA (BlackNews.com) -- The statistics are alarming. If you believe them- African American children have a better chance of ending up in jail than in college. Because of the downturn in the economy and school districts cutting everywhere - there is no way to rely on teachers and counselors for your child's success. It is time for parents to take the reins. But how? How do you navigate your school system? How do you fight for your child's grades, success and opportunities to get them set on a good life path? Darlene Willis and Marsha Dodson are teaching

parents how. They are working with http://www.blacknews.com/images/ empowering_parents.jpg school districts and parents all over the country with poetry, music, "reality statistics" and real life stories and solutions to tell their story. Parents feel empowered to take control and are NOT lectured to. They also take control in their own community with the award winning program College Bound San Diego. Over the last 10 years, they have worked with parents and students and have a 100% success rate. Every child in their program

has had the opportunity to go to college. The goal of the Wake-Up Challenge is to reach one million parents... reach them and teach them! Dr. Darlene V. Willis and Marsha R. Dodson Co-Founders of Empowering Parents

Giddings, continued from page 5 generating the income they need to cover their living expenses with the addition of their student loan payment. The subsequent effect was some students made the decision to drop out of college because they could not see how they would be able to pay the debt they were taking on. Facing $50,000 in debt upon graduation is a difficult and dismal way to begin life after college. To further illustrate the need for some relief would be to recognize that Americans have had the notorious distinction of carrying a significant amount of credit card debt. However the tides are turning, and at

nearly $1 trillion, student loans now exceed the US credit-card debt for the first time in history. This is why I am supportive of making these adjustments. They will help those who worked hard to achieve the dream of a higher education and are now entering the workforce as an educated employee. Now, these young people have the ability to have their student loan repayments determined by their income level which will change the way future students make their career decisions. The Department of Education announced that Texas would receive over $20 million

in grants to historically Black colleges and universities. This grant money will go towards advancing these universities as well as helping students who face financial challenges. Although there is more work to be done, the 2012 student loan legislation as well as the grant money are two steps that will have a significant impact as it relates to the affordability of higher education. Fair Housing Organizations file discrimination complaint against Bank of America

WASHINGTON, DC – The National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) and five of its member organizations around the country announced a federal housing discrimination complaint against Bank of America Corporation, Bank of America, N.A., and BAC Home Loan Servicing, LP. This complaint, which was filed earlier with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is the result of an undercover investigation that found that Bank of America maintains and markets foreclosed homes in White neighborhoods in a much better manner than in African-American and Latino neighborhoods. Bank of America is one of the largest American banks that maintains and sells foreclosed properties and is one of the world’s largest financial institutions. The investigation of 373 foreclosed homes owned, serviced or managed by Bank of America demonstrates that the financial giant has engaged in a systemic practice of maintaining and marketing its foreclosed, bank-owned properties (also known as Real Estate Owned or REO properties) in a state of disrepair in communities of color while maintaining and marketing REO properties in predominantly White communities in a far superior manner. The investigation evaluated Bank of America REO properties in the eight metropolitan areas of Atlanta, GA; Dallas, TX; Dayton, OH; Grand Rapids, MI; Miami/

Fort Lauderdale, FL; Oakland/ Richmond/Concord, CA; Phoenix, AZ, and metropolitan Washington, DC. Communities of color continue to experience foreclosure rates twice those of White communities and continue to see their REO homes left to deteriorate and sit vacant. “Our economy may be recovering in some communities, but this is a Tale of Two Recoveries, said Shanna L. Smith, President and CEO of the National Fair Housing Alliance in Washington, DC. “Our investigation shows that Bank of America continues to disregard its REO homes in communities of color. And they have no excuse. Bank of America has been on notice of its failure to maintain REOs since the summer of 2009 yet has made no improvement in addressing racial disparities in the maintenance and marketing of its bank-owned homes. NFHA and its five member organizations are represented by Joseph M. Sellers and Peter Romer-Friedman of Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC. The National Fair Housing Alliance in Washington, D.C., and five of its member organizations – the Miami Valley Fair Housing Center in Dayton, OH; Housing Opportunities Project for Excellence, Inc. in Miami, FL; Metro Fair Housing Services in Atlanta, GA; the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan in Grand Rapids, MI and the North Texas Fair Housing Center in Dallas, TX – evaluated REO

properties for the existence of 39 different types of maintenance or marketing deficiencies, such as broken windows and doors, water damage, overgrown lawns, no “for sale sign, trash on the property, and other problems. “Without a ‘for sale’ sign, for example, potential homebuyers and neighbors simply don’t know the home is available, continued Smith. “Also, if there are unauthorized occupants or storm damage, neighbors have no one to call. With a ‘for sale’ sign, neighbors can call a real estate agent to report these kinds of problems. In Oakland, CA, 72 percent of Bank of America REO properties in communities of color were missing a “for sale sign, 80 percent in Washington, DC and Atlanta, GA, and 86 percent in Phoenix, AZ. Trash on a property is not only an eyesore for neighbors, but it makes a home unappealing to buyers and can be a potential health and safety hazard. Regular maintenance would correct this problem, but in Grand Rapids, MI, 97 percent of all Bank of America REO properties in communities of color had substantial amounts of trash, as well as 69 percent in Dallas, TX, 71 percent in Phoenix, AZ, 77 percent in Oakland, CA, and 70 percent in Washington, DC. NFHA will continue its investigation into the practices of REO maintenance and marketing in the nation’s banking system. In April, NFHA issued a report on the findings of its nationwide REO
