Vivek will also help us build on the progress we’ve made combatting Ebola, both in our country and at its source. Combined with the crucial support for fighting Ebola included in the bill to fund our government next year, Vivek’s confirmation makes us better positioned to save lives around the world and protect the American people here at home.

In October, Matthew Torres stopped by the Frisco ISD Career and Technical Education Center to share news with his former broadcast teacher, Eva Coleman, of landing his first television station job at KTAB-TV, the CBS affiliate in Abilene, Texas. His most recent stop was to visit before his start with WTVF NewsChannel 5, the CBS affiliate in Nashville, Tennessee where he'll serve as a morning reporter. "Matthew is so talented and I love being able to witness his continuous rise in this industry," Coleman said. "He always comes back to visit, paying it forward, and words cannot express my level of pride." Torres is a 2007 Frisco High School graduate and served as a reporter for the school's news program, RACC-TV. Coleman launched RACC-TV in 2004 and served as Executive Producer until 2008 before going on to launch the district-wide student produced program, Frisco ISD-TV. Torres is also a Cum Laude graduate of the University of North Texas with a degree in Converged Broadcast Media, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists Urban Journalism Workshop.. In addition, he interned with Dallas-Fort Worth's CBS 11. He often visits Coleman's Audio/Video Production classes at the Career and Technical Education Center to share his experiences.

are diagnosed in this country every year. That means you, or someone next to you, could be at risk. In fiscal year 2013 providers at Parkland Health & Hospital System treated 573 patients suffering from shingles which is caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in the body and for reasons that are not fully known, the virus can reactivate later, causing shingles. Shingles is a painful rash that develops on one side of the face or body. The rash forms blisters that typically scab over in seven to 10 days and clear up within two to four weeks. Before the rash develops, people often have pain, itching, or tingling in the area where the rash will develop. This may happen anywhere from one to five days before the rash appears. “I’ve seen the commercials describing the pain associated with shingles, but didn’t give it a second thought until I was diagnosed with shingles,” said Cassandra Christopher, an HR Business Partner in Parkland’s Office of Talent Management. “The pain was excruciating. It’s not something I’d wish on anyone.” Most commonly, the rash occurs in a shingle stripe around either the left or the right side of the body. In other cases, the rash occurs on one side of the face. In rare cases (usually among people with weakened immune systems), the rash may be more widespread and look similar to a chickenpox rash, according to the CDC. “Shingles have been around for a number of years but with the increased publicity, people are becoming more aware of the virus,” said Noel Santini, MD, Medical Director for Parkland’s network of Community Oriented Primary Care health centers. “There are several antiviral medicines to treat shingles that will help shorten the length and severity of the illness. But to be effective, they must be started as soon as the rash appears. “People who have or think they might have shingles should call their healthcare provider as soon as possible to discuss treatment options,” Dr. Santini added. The only way to reduce the risk of developing shingles and the long-term pain is to get vaccinated. The CDC recommends that people aged 60 years and older get one dose of the shingles vaccine. People seeking the shingles vaccine are advised to call their neighborhood pharmacy or physician office and ask about its availability.

Recently individual members of the Congressional Black Caucus spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives regarding the decision by a grand jury in Ferguson, Missouri not to indict a police officer for the shooting death of Michael Brown, an unarmed African American teenager. Without exception, members of the Caucus expressed outrage with the decision, and the conduct of the Ferguson County prosecutor, Robert McCullough, whose ability to be fair-minded and non-partisan was challenged by members of Ferguson’s African American community. McCullough undermined public confidence by taking a highly unusual approach to the grand jury proceedings. Rather than conducting an investigation into the August shooting and then making a recommendation to the grand jury, as most prosecutors do, McCullough left the decision to the 12 men and women who comprised the grand jury. The grand jurors were faced with massive amounts of data to consider. In a highly unusual move, the officer who did the shooting,

Young people around the country are speaking out against injustices and more and more signs of illegal acts by police officers are surfacing on the internet. There’s nothing like being the people who lack backbones, fortitude or a level of consciousness to speak out during times of turmoil and urgency; but decades later they want to act as

President Obama has pledged his personal involvement. As the proud mother of an African American son and the grandmother of three grandsons I can only imagine the depth of the wound that is in the hearts of Michael Brown’s parents. Their son will not sit with them for another holiday meal. Nor will they see him graduate from college. As a nation we must immediately address the social ills that lead to the senseless deaths of young black men. We must somehow harness the hurt and the anger that exists and create positive and lasting change. Senseless tragedies can be avoided if we initiate and sustain dialogue and mutual respect among our youth, elected officials, clergy, community leaders and members of law enforcement. We must do this to ensure that events, like the shooting death of Michael Brown, do not occur on the streets of Ferguson, or on the streets of any of our cities and towns.

You nay not agree with the tactics, strategies or execution, but you can move out of the way and let those who have a desire do what they feel is necessary; without your griping and moaning. If you don’t agree, do your own thing. Come up with your own strategy. Or, you can sit home watching your sop operas, reality shows or cartoons--like you don’t have a care in the world. That is, after all, better than using the media to attack progress. “The cops are awesome,” Barkley told CNN on Tuesday. “They’re the only thing in the ghetto between this place being the wild wild West.” –“Sir” Charles Barkley – Times Magazine I was waiting for Supreme Court Injustice Clarence Thomas to carry the “White man’s water” in this latest series of miscarried justice, but I guess Charles Barkley had the lowest bid. This over-zealous, semi-literate Negro did what good coloreds are supposed to do…Charles came up with a line almost as asinine as the ones former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been spouting to support the non-indictment of officers who committed murder. Let me make two strong declarations upfront; 1. Not all cops are bad, but the good ones need to start speaking up quickly. 2. If you think Charles Barkley is a plain spoken, tell-it-like-it-

you old sayings, colloquialisms, clever quotes and bits of wisdom that survive history. But here is one that I coined myself, tailormade for Charlie Barkley; “When
you engage a worrisome fool you marry your worst fears.” In other words; trying to discern or defend against the mind and mannerisms of an idiot is idiotic. Chuck Barkley is a millionaire by the virtue of the fact that he is a sold-out Negro, a coonish caricature and a fully-functioning subsidiary of White conservatism and White privilege. Chuck is an embarrassment to the Freedom Fighters and martyrs who served his home state of Alabama and this nation so well. But…Enough of that Negro. Rather than get engaged to a witless fool I would rather marry the wisdom and bravery of other sports heroes. I will leave Chuck and quiet Negroes like Michael Jordan to their cigars and golf clubs. Let’s concentrate on Curt Flood whose bravery spawned the notion and birth of Free Agency that made Charles rich. Or the great and gracious Muhammad Ali who’s fights for freedom and justice compelled this nation and the world to go the extra round for the sake of freedom and dignity. How about Wilma Rudolph who exchanged her Olympic star status to become an earthly gift to the Civil Rights and Women’s Rights movements? Or maybe Jackie JoynerKersee who made the long jump
from Gold Medalist to return to help in communities that look like ghettos. Fast forward to today and there are more than a few athletes paying the freight of freedom. Protests take a lot of nerve, but to Protest Ferguson Police where they live under the bright glaring lights of the National Football League require character and strength. Fox News reported it this way. “Prior to kickoff of their game against the Oakland Raiders, Rams wide receivers Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt came out together and raised their hands, but the move was obscured by a smoke machine in the upper reaches of the Edward Jones Dome. Jared Cook, Stedman Bailey and Chris Givens then

came out and stood together with hands raised in the fog.” Take that Uncle Charlie. And by the way they went on to win the game 52 to nuthin’ as we say here in the ghetto!!! LeBron James and so many other NBA players are speaking out vociferously and vehemently. If Charles could read a Muhammad Ali quote, he may understand this movement that is statistically as diverse as any in this nation’s history; “Wars of nations are fought to change maps. But wars of poverty are fought to map change.” This fight is all about the poverty of injustice that resides in our communities and apparently there’s nothing to fight about in Charlie’s neighborhood.

“The phenomenon we have seen in America since the announcement of the nonindictments of officers in the killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner is new to a generation, but not to the nation. Young people have always helped to fuel historic social change. We must not forget – 50 years ago, it was young people on that bridge in Selma, Alabama; young people sitting-in in Greensboro, NC; young people riding Freedom buses all over this nation challenging conventional laws and the status quo; young people like Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney losing their lives in
Philadelphia, Mississippi. A multicultural band of young people, united with historic civil rights organizations, legislators, clergy, and everyday Americans who decided that it was time for our country to do better and be better, have been the impetus for so many of the changes we’ve witnessed as a nation through the decades. Millions of Americans have now taken to the streets and to social media not because the problems that have caused the outrage just began yesterday, but because sometimes difficult circumstances present a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to bring

Ask Alma
Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans over 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@ yahoo.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and twitter @almaaskalma.
Dear Alma, I have been with this person for six years, and we’ve had our up and downs, like any relationship. We are living apart but he still wants us to keep our friendship. I don’t, because he needs to get himself together financially and mentally. Basically, I feel if someone truly loves you, they will do whatever it takes to be with the person. He’s just not moving fast enough for me. I do love him and want to be with him, but I can’t wait any longer. Now my problem is trying to move on and forget him. What’s the best way to handle this? Name withheld Dear Nameless, Six is the magic number. So you’ve been with him for six years. You guys don’t live together; you aren’t engaged, and he needs to get it together. He wants to continue a “friendship,” but you want more, and since he hasn’t obliged, you’re ready to move on. First, I applaud you for making the decision to break it off, redefine, redirect and find your joy. Some people stay in an unfulfilled relationship for the sake of being in a relationship, and that’s never a healthy decision. Truth be told, let’s give him credit; a friendship is all that he wants, and a friendship is all that he has to offer – to you. You, on the other hand, have decided that’s not enough, and that’s ok. You know you better than anyone else. By making the decision to break it off and move on in your mind, all you need now is for your heart to catch on. That ol’ heart always takes a little more time with this sorta thing, doesn’t it? While working through the heartache, keep in mind – after a break-up, we think…and ponder…and reminisce…about how we wish it could have been. I call that the coulda, shoulda, woulda stage. Since you will be thinking about it, for a little while anyway, put yourself on the path of thinking about the real deal of what’s been happening for the past six years. Even if you have to write it down. That way, you can recall and reread what really happened and how it made you feel. Now, the next step toward moving on – take the time to refuel. I’d suggest focusing on what brings you strength. If there’s a particular minister or motivational speaker you like, listen to them, every day. If you like to walk, run, dance, workout, swim, do that for yourself – every day – or as much as you can. Download your best pick-me-up songs on your iPod, and listen to them. Hum along and take it all in. Let’s imagine you’re preparing to take a long road trip. Close your eyes, see yourself at a gas station; you’re filling up your tank – a red sports car, I hope, LOL. Do the same for your heart – refuel. Keep busy, find a new hobby. How about volunteering at church, with the elderly, a charity, or with kids? Take the focus off him and focus on you. Use this time to allow yourself to work on being the best person you can be, who without a doubt is taking the time to live her life to the fullest. You can do it!

Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington
Promises, Promises, Can I Believe You? For a moment I’d like to think through this thing called covenant. I understand the dictionary definition as you probably do also. But here I’d like to take a moment and look at it biblically. It is really something to think that God made a covenant with His people. That would mean you and me. In essence He’s made us a promise. Now if you’ve lived as long as I have, you’ve had people make promises to you that one, they had no intention of keeping and, two, they failed miserably while trying to keep their word. A third example would be he or she could have cared less about keeping a promise they made to you. Perhaps you are a promise breaker, rather than a promise keeper. I know I’ve broken a promise or two in my day. But the subject here is God. I’ve got to assume that if anybody keeps His Word, it’s got to be God. Therefore it stands to reason and faith that we should take to our graves the covenant promise God made to Abraham i.e.us. Lest we forget, it’s the one Jesus came to fulfill. Now, if I’ve got the concept down and the importance associated with keeping one’s word, then I need to be more careful in the promises I make and to whom I make them. It appears the foundation of spiritual belief is wrapped up in a simple promise. To Noah, “Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you green plants, I now give you everything.” Genesis 9:3. To Abraham, “As for me, this is my covenant with you…..you will be the father of nations….I will make nations of you and kings will come from you. I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for generations to come, to be your God and the God of the descendants after you… ..I will be their God.” Genesis 17:2-8. To Moses, “Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant then out of all nations, you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation…..” Exodus 19:5. From Jesus to the disciples, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood…for whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes….. 1 Corinthians 11:25-26. Remember this is God talking about His promises to us. Have you made any promises to Him lately? What about to yourself about Him, or to someone who loves you or to someone you love? Have you kept them? Are you a covenant breaker or a covenant keeper? Do you believe you when you talk? Do you speak the truth when you do? There is a saying we’ve all heard about speaking the truth into existence; also, be careful about what you ask for. You see this covenant thing had a powerful beginning. A promise is downright godly. It has to be. The first one came from God to us through Adam and Eve. It kind of gets all caught up in words and the power of words and the understanding of words; God’s words, your words and more words. They have incredible power, if we could always understand them in the context of covenant. They are really vehicles to communicate with each other and the original covenant maker. A reality for all of us is that we are accountable for our words and thereby our actions. My obligation then is to emulate God almighty in a manner befitting His divine order. “So shall my word be that goes forth out of your mouth…” Isaiah 55:11. This covenant is a wondrous thing because God keeps His word. The more we understand this, the more scripture opens up and reveals the true nature of God. If I am made in his image, honesty should be the stuff of which my promises are made. Truth is the essence of life and faith in God’s word is unshakeable. Hopefully, others can put their faith in my words and yours too. May God bless and keep you always.

Holiday parties, sounds of merry music, festive foods and decorated homes are a welcome scene during the Christmas season, but for many, it can be a stark reality of the physical absence of a loved one due to death. Statistics reveal that from Thanksgiving to New Years, the rate of suicide, homicide and other types of deaths peak to its’ highest. It is the time of year where those who are spending their first holidays without that special loved one struggle the most.

The moment of comfort and consolation for families should not stop at the site of the interment, but there are stages and phases to grief, and the holiday season is a significant phase. Over the 100 years of Black and Clark funeral home taking care of families with excellence, we know a little something about grief. We would like to recommend some Holiday Grief Nuggets that can help you and your family continue to focus on the celebration of your loved one’s life, even during this difficult holiday season. Keep the party going. As hard as it may be, keep the party going by remembering the special nuisances and uniqueness of the loved one who is physically not present this Holiday Season. This is the time to create new memories so that the legacy of life lives on. Plan a special event where everyone brings a picture and tells their favorite story about them. Keep your Faith strong. Write a special prayer acknowledging their legacy while having a candle lighting ceremony. As a family, make a decision to worship together on a certain day. This is great way to keep children involved and understanding that Faith is an important part to the grieving process. Keep the Legacy Alive. It is important to get input from family and friends so that everyone will feel included in celebrations. Involve Children in service opportunities that their loved one was may have been passionate about. In lieu of shopping for gifts, consider giving legacy gifts to others. Establish legacy traditions like serving at a homeless shelter, or donating coats to needy children and families in the name of your loved ones or by donating to another grieving family who may be in the beginning of the grief cycle. This is also a very healthy way for children to learn to live a life of service while remaining connected to the legacy of their loved one. At the end of the day, holidays can hurt – but if looked at from a perspective of faith, you will make it through.

Serving as a full-time firefighter paramedic near Tampa, FL, Porter developed the Milk Tray as a way to continue breastfeeding despite a hectic work schedule fraught with 24 hour shifts. “I’ve always wanted Milk Trays to become the leading choice in breast milk storage,” said Porter. “I know that under the guiding hand of Fairhaven Health this dream will become a reality.” Milkies Milk Trays are specifically designed for freezing and storing one ounce servings of breast milk, so they can be defrosted and used at a moment’s notice. This option in particular is a fantastic way for teams and individuals alike to get the specially designed look they crave, with the personalization they need. “I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa. By targeting key points along the body, it creates a stable platform for gravity to gently yet effectively do its job. It all starts by mapping out the individual’s body shape and setting the pads in the correct positions. When lying on these pads face down the sacroiliac, spinal, shoulder, and TMJ joints are allowed to relax and find their natural shape. From headaches and pinched nerves to sciatica and pregnancy discomforts, Kacelia has been clinically proven to bring relief to men and women of all ages. It’s not
(214) 941-0110 just another band aid when it comes to treating chronic pain. With consistent use it can be the gift that keeps on giving through the years. Evelyn Zuehlke-Haworth and her husband Kelly spent three years developing Kacelia, creating a resource that everyone, everywhere can utilize to develop strength, stability, and relief in their daily lives. For the past 30 years Evelyn has worked as a hands on chiropractor, and is now excited to offer those she can’t help in person with a holistic option for treating their pain at home. Each product is engineered under the supervision of healthcare professionals and composed of quality medical grade materials assembled in the USA. www.kacelia.com
