Talking trade with Commerce Secretary

Stressing the importance of trade in the creation of jobs, U.S. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) recently hosted another edition of the quarterly “Eddie Bernice Johnson Business Roundtable” series, featuring the current U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Penny Pritzker. Congresswoman Johnson hosts these informational roundtable meetings that connect small and large business owners in North Texas with officials from various federal agencies with the goal of creating lasting business relationships and increasing awareness of federal programs, grants, and services that support businesses and business owners. This roundtable meeting was attended by Mayor Mike Rawlings and local Dallas business leaders, including executives from Mary Kay, Texas Instruments, AT&T, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and several other local and Texas-based companies. During the discussion, Secretary Pritzker shared valuable insight into the programs and opportunities put forth by the President’s administration that are designed to help increase America’s manufacturing base. A large portion of the discussion focused on the benefits of trade and globalization for local businesses and job markets. “Representative Johnson has been a great friend to the administration as a member of Congress,” said Secretary Pritzker. “We will continue to work diligently with Congresswoman Johnson to ensure that our trade policies work for our country and its citizen.” Pointing out that trade votes are “always difficult,”

the Secretary said it important that there be a grassroots effort in support of trade agreements. She listened intently as issues such as cross border data flow, service trade, incentives for service companies, encouraging small business exporters and gaining work visas, were broached by attendees. Pointing out that there is a “rigorous environment “against trade,” the Congresswoman said trade creates jobs. Since 2010, she added, the enviroment has changed with a new energy that is anti-trade. Congresswoman Johnson highlighted the opportunities that globalization and fair trade

would bring to Texas. She concluded the meeting by stating: “it is important to me that business owners in North Texas have the opportunity to benefit from free and fair trade and to become true benefactors from this emerging global economy,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “Trade creates jobs. International trade is a major engine, of not only America’s economy, but of the Texas economy. It is imperative that we take the necessary steps to balance the playing field by establishing rules to enhance fairness without geographical limitations, encourage innovation and improve consumer value in the global commerce ecosystem.”

Dallas Fire Fighters fill the Boot to support Kids and Adults with Muscle-Debilitating Members of the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department are set to kick off the fire fighter’s annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) find urgently needed treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases that severely limit strength and mobility. More than 1,900 fire fighters from Dallas Fire-Rescue will fan out across the city with boots in hand for this year’s drive on April 13, 14 and 15. The Dallas Fire-Rescue Department will kick off its 2016 Fill the Boot drive with a special press event on April 12 at 2 p.m. located at Station 43-2844 on Lombardy Ln., Dallas, Texas 75220. This event is open to the public. “For more than sixty years, fire fighters have stood on the front lines with MDA in the fight to free individuals — and the families who love them — from the harm of these life-threatening muscle diseases,” said MDA Executive Director, Jenny Hanie. “Each year, Dallas fire fighters dedicate countless hours of their time participating in Fill the Boot drives and at MDA Summer Camp. We're grateful for their steadfast drive and uncommon caring toward the kids and adults we serve and look forward to working together once again to make this Fill the Boot season a huge success.” MDA’s spirited Fill the Boot campaign is an honored tradition in which thousands of dedicated fire fighters in hometowns across America hit the streets or storefronts asking pedestrians, motorists, customers and

other passersby to make a donation to MDA, using their collective strength to help kids and adults live longer and grow stronger. Funds raised through 2016 Dallas Fill the Boot event empower families with lifeenhancing resources and support that open new possibilities and maximize independence so they can experience the world without any limits. In addition to Fill the Boot drives, fire fighter contributions from year-round local events, help support MDA’s efforts to raise awareness and provide professional and public education about neuromuscular diseases. Contributions also help MDA’s efforts to fund groundbreaking research and lifeenhancing programs such as state-of-the-art support groups and Care Centers, including the MDA Care Center at Children’s Health, UT Southwestern and Texas Neurology in Dallas. They also help send around 100 local kids to “the best week of the year” at MDA Summer Camp at no cost to their families at Camp John Marc in Meridian, Texas.

The Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (IDVSA) at the University of Texas at Austin recently unveiled its final report “Health and Well-Being: Texas Statewide Sexual Assault Prevalence Study.” This research project follows up a study completed in 2003 (Survey of Texans: A Focus on Sexual Assault, 2003.) and reveals that a decade later sexual assault is more pervasive in Texas. “It’s alarming that the prevalence of sexual assault has grown significantly since 2003. As a state it’s imperative that we devote adequate resources to preventing sexual violence and serving survivor needs” says Annette Burrhus-Clay, Executive Director at the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA), “To do otherwise seems both reckless and heartless.” State and local leaders will host a press conference, in conjunction with the Conference

on Crimes Against Women, at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel to discuss the implications of the prevalence data for law enforcement, local agencies, hospitals, and the community as a whole. Local leaders will also discuss the work they are doing in the community to support survivors and to prevent sexual violence in the long run. "Our vision is that communities in North Texas are free from sexual violence. While this seems like a monumental task; together we can greatly minimize it," said April Mitchell, Executive Director of Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center (DARCC). Preliminary findings suggest an increase of sexual assault incidences and a decrease in reporting to law enforcement. “Our findings raise important questions. Our science to accurately measure sexual assault has evolved and an increase in public awareness over the past decade may mean that people think differently about their victimization,” said Dr. Noël Busch-Armendariz, the lead investigator and director of the Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault, “It is clear that we must continue to propel sexual assault onto our conversations at the state and local level. Our responses should be swift, strategic, and systematic—with targets from prevention to accountability. Those impacted by this crime are our family members, coworkers, students, and our friends—those that we describe here are all Texans.”

NAACP issues statement on Supreme Court upholding "One Person, One Vote" BALTIMORE –NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks released the following statement about the Supreme Court decision on voter representation in Evenwel V. Abbott: “We are extremely pleased that the Supreme Court today re-affirmed a key principle of our representative system upheld at every lower level of the court system – that people who hold elected office are chosen by and represent the interests of ALL the people who live in their districts, regardless of whether they were active voters, or supportive of an individual candidate’s or party’s agenda and philosophy. “If voting is a civic sacrament, then the principle of “one person, one vote” is a civic commandment enshrined in our Constitution. Today, the Court unanimously affirmed that principle. “In this year, when candidates for president are asking people to support policies that would denigrate, demean, discriminate and even deport people who have been living

and working in America, the NAACP remains unapologetic in our fight against attempts to silence large segments of our population, or game the election process to preserve their own power and influence. “Regardless of age, prior background, citizenship status or other circumstance, everyone deserves a voice in important policy decisions affecting critical issues like education, health, and job creation and economic development. Given these and other widespread attempts by lawmakers since 2010 to weaken the voices of the poor, the young, voters of color, we consider today’s decision to be a huge win for our democracy. “As we remember and honor the life of the Reverend Dr. Martin King, Jr., who was taken from us 48 years ago today, we shall continue our work to perfect this Union and demand that all have a seat and a voice at the table to declare that Our Lives Matter, and Our Votes Count.”


METRO DALLAS DISTRICT JUDGE ANNOUNCES SPRING 2016-CITIZENS’ CIVIL ACADEMY Judge Staci Williams, Presiding Judge of the 101st District Court, has announced the Spring 2016 dates for her free and non-partisan judicial outreach program, the Citizens’ Civil Academy. The purpose of the Citizens’ Civil Academy is to teach citizens about the civil court process and the inner workings of the George Allen, Sr., Courts Building. Judge Williams notes, “[P]eople know about the criminal courts. The news, almost daily, highlights cases involving murder, assault, drugs or animal cruelty. Few people can tell you about the civil court process and rarely are there continuous news stories about civil cases.” In Dallas County, a civil district court may hear cases involving contracts, business disputes, motor vehicle accidents, personal injury, property damage, wrongful death, workers’ compensation appeals, and eminent domain and condemnation. At the Citizens’ Civil Academy, participants will: learn what happens to case from the time it is filed until the time it is disposed; find out about available legal resources; participate in a mock “voir dire” (jury selection); and, win prizes while playing Court BINGO; Mr. Greg Jones, Outreach Director of the West Dallas Community Church, commented, “ [W]e are excited to be hosting the Spring 2016 Citizens’ Civil Academy. We need to learn about the court system and how it works, from insiders.” Experienced trial attorneys William M. Toles, a partner at Fee, Smith, Sharp & Vitullo and Spencer Browne, a partner at Reyes, Browne, Reilly, will conduct a mock “voir dire” (jury selection) so that participants will understand what happens when a citizen is called for jury duty and how individuals are selected to sit as a juror on a particular case. Take that you White Racist Right to Carry Bigots! By Thomas Muhammad Yep it was awesome to watch and a very proud moment! I just happened to be cruising down MLK Boulevard and suddenly I was in the middle of the best Black Rage I hadn’t seen in years. And since the bulk of the crowd was assembled in front of Mosque #48, I parked and went to Student Minister Tyrone H. Muhammad, the leadership there. After he updated me on what was up I immediately took up my post at the bottom of the Mosque driveway, put my fist in the air and got my energetic Black Power shouts going. Meanwhile the mighty Fruit of Islam (FOI) were all over the Mosque property, including its roof protecting the site. Man it was awesome! But seeing the gun toting members of the Bureau of American Islamic Relations (BAIR) run away as hundreds of Black folks in South Dallas attempt to bum rush the small grassy patch where police barricades had set up for their protection was completely “exhilarating” cause this kid hadn’t seen this type of victory since we ran the Ku Klux Klan out of downtown Jasper ,Texas after James Byrd Jr was dragged to death. The group uses the acronym BAIR as a play on the wellknown popular name of the American Islamic advocacy group called CAIR (the Council on American Islamic Relations. CAIR is the largest Muslim Civil Rights organization in the US

with over 35 Chapters, including Canada. BAIR members had become notorious for standing outside Mosques in white suburbs carrying all sorts of nasty looking weapons where a majority of immigrants worshiped causing fear among its members. But last Saturday to the shock of many, the morons decided they would go stand in front of the Nation of Islam Mosque #48 in South Dallas and do the same there. Oops big mistake cause they soon found out that in the Black Hood the real meaning of “Homey Don’t Play That!” BAIR found without a doubt that yes, black folk have guns too and had no problem pulling the trigger to protect their streets. This was truly a “Robert Williams Negroes with Guns” moment or more precise a “Lowndes County Freedom Organization” period which gave birth to the armed 1965 original Black Panther Party. Story has it that after being fired upon by the Ku Klux Klan the Panthers fired back prompting Klan leaders to complain to the County Sharif. Yeah, that too, was a proud moment. A few minutes after arriving and after their barricades were erected, the cowards took one look at the angry crowd approaching and quickly said “uh un outta here!” Damn skippy and there’s more where that came from you white bigots! Until then the struggle continues..

There is a particular evil, among others, going on the State of Michigan. During the election hoopla, the debates, the speeches, and attention focused on Michigan’s Black voters, I was appalled that no one took the opportunity to point out this quiet yet outrageous situation. No one stepped to the microphone or held a press conference or asked a question or held up a sign about Edward Pinkney. Who is Ed Pinkney? He is a 68-year-old minister from Benton Harbor, Mich., former president of the local NAACP, and most of all, an unwavering activist who fights against social and economic injustice. Pinkney now sits in an isolation cell at the infamous Marquette Branch Prison, located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, nearly 500 miles from his hometown, his wife, Dorothy, and his supporters, in an “out of sight, out of mind� attempt by the state to make Brother Pinkney disappear from the public stage and from public discourse. What we saw during the Michigan primary was an indication that their strategy is working. Black folks and other Pinkney supporters, to my knowledge, made no real attempt to get the candidates to issue statements of support for Pinkney; the injustices perpetrated against him were not cited in the debates or in the press conferences. Now as we watch the rollout of a revived relationship with Cuba, and folks are talking about political prisoners on that

island, why is there nothing mentioned about the political prisoners in this country, especially Edward Pinkney, who is suffering a penalty far beyond the level of crime he is accused of committing. President Obama spoke to Raoul Castro about human rights and political prisoners while nothing was said or done about Pinkney. Obama went to a prison in Colorado and issued pardons for prisoners. He also had a high-profile ceremony at the White House last week, but left Pinkney off his list of those who should be freed. In Pinkney’s own words: “A heavy and cruel hand has been laid upon me. On Oct. 6, 2015, I was transferred back to Marquette Branch Prison, a two-day ride on the bus, shackled, mistreated and intimidated. I was forced to strip on five different occasions. I am forced into overcrowding, inadequate exercise, lack of clean clothing and inadequate medical care which violates the Eighth Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment. I estimate over 75 percent of the prisoners in Marquette have mental problems.� His history of confrontation with the justice system in Michigan notwithstanding, in this particular case, the punishment does not fit the alleged crime. An all-white jury convicted him of forgery for changing dates next to signatures on a petition drive for a recall drive. Yes, he has been a thorn in the side of the establishment and local judges in Benton Harbor. Pinkney’s willingness to fight for civil rights should not be used as an excuse for retribution against him by the courts. According to our Constitution, he must be treated fairly and he must not be subjected to “cruel and unusual punishment.� The crime he allegedly committed does not rise to the level of being held in prison without bond during his appeal. By the time his appeal comes around, if he is found not guilty, he will have served prison time for a crime he did not commit.

Among the 248 prisoners ordered released by President Obama, there are some I am sure who committed crimes far more serious than Pinkney is accused of, yet he was not on the POTUS’ list for pardon, clemency, or consideration of any kind. Why not? Well, it could be due to a lack of support and advocacy on Pinkney’s behalf by folks and organizations in Benton Harbor, especially the NAACP (but I am not surprised by its lack of involvement), as well as those who were so excited about the presidential candidates being in their state but forgot to demand justice for Edward Pinkney. The Congressional Representatives from Pinkney’s district and beyond should be swamped with letters, emails, and phone calls from constituents demanding they focus on this case and get this man out of prison pending his appeal. Representatives should contact President Obama and ask Attorney General Loretta Lynch to look into the case as well. And finally, the president himself should be contacted with demands for Pinkney’s release, if not complete clemency. Remember what George Bush did for Scooter Libby? Why doesn’t Obama exercise the same power for our people? As Pinkney sits in that remote prison, who knows in what physical and mental condition, if something happens to him and, God forbid, if he dies there, Black folks will march, yell and scream, and call for justice for Brother Pinkney. That’s not the time to do it; the right time is now, while he is alive and has a reasonable portion of health. Don’t sit this one out folks. Our alarm clock went off some time ago; we just keep on hitting the snooze button.

I have said often that too many Americans would rather celebrate than follow Dr. King. Many have enshrined Dr. King the dreamer and ignored Dr. King the "disturber of all unjust peace," as theologian Vincent Harding said. Many remember King the vocal opponent of violence but not the King who called for massive nonviolent civil disobedience to challenge the stockpiling of weapons of death and the wars they fuel and the excessive materialism of the greedy that deprives the needy of the basic necessities of life. And many celebrate Dr. King the orator but ignore his words about the need for reordering the misguided values and national investment priorities he believed are the seeds of America's downfall. Dr. King's greatness lay in his willingness to struggle to hear and see the truth; to not give into fear, uncertainty and despair;

had declared a war on poverty? Because he saw that our nation's ills went far deeper and that fundamental structural and priorities changes had to be made and that the War on Poverty and Vietnam War were inextricably intertwined. In the Cathedral sermon he announced that in a few weeks he would be coming back to Washington leading a Poor People's Campaign: "We are going to bring the tired, the poor, the huddled masses . . . We are going to bring children and adults and old people, people who have never seen a doctor or a dentist in their lives . . . We are not coming to engage in any histrionic gesture. We are not coming to tear up Washington. We are coming to demand that the government address itself to the problem of poverty. We read one day, 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.' But if a man doesn't have a job or an income, he has neither life nor liberty nor the possibility for the pursuit of happiness. He merely exists. "We are coming to ask America to be true to the huge promissory note that it signed years ago. And we are coming to engage in dramatic nonviolent action, to call attention to the gulf between promise and fulfillment; to make the invisible visible. Why do we do it this way? We do it this way because it is our experience that the nation doesn't move around questions of genuine equality for the poor and for black people until it is confronted massively, dramatically in terms of direct action . . . And I submit that nothing will be done until people of goodwill put their bodies and their souls in motion."

Not merely for the vitriolic words and the violent actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence and indifference of the good people who sit around and say, 'Wait on time.' Somewhere we must come to see that human progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals who are willing to be co-workers with God. And without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the primitive forces of social stagnation. So we must help time and realize that the time is always ripe to do right." We must act upon his warnings if our children, nation's future and founding principles - subverted and still sullied by the legacies of slavery, Native American genocide, exclusion of women and nonproperty-owning men of all colors from our electoral processes - are to be saved.

Donald, I thought it only fair to warn you since you’ve been so plainspoken... Bruh, it’s about to go down. Take it from a brother who was born into a system of discrimination; these folks are setting you up. But at least they have enough respect for you to let you know it’s about to go sideways. All of a sudden, the GOP is making every publicized effort to explain the rules of the Republican Convention delegate process to you. Every political news broadcast is centered on a “brokered convention.” So you need 1237 delegates in order to win the nomination outright. They’ve shown you in graphic detail what happens if you only win 1236 delegates. Ask yourself; why they’re being so helpful? Take it from me Donald. You’re Webster’s picture definition of “White male privilege” and you can’t even imagine what’s about to happen to you. Second class citizenship in these yet to be United States is not for the faint of heart. They are about to do you wrong and explain to you why it’s right. This impromptu need to advise you of the rules means that the game is about to go in their favor. As Michael Jackson sang in the musical The Wiz; “You can’t win, you can’t break even and you can’t get out of the game.” When we see it in our community they usually trot out

But Bruh…consider yourself lucky. Generally when they assassinate our leaders who promise to “Make America Great” they send folks like Lee Harvey Oswald, James Earl Ray, or Sirhan Sirhan to hand deliver the message. They let you fly the “friendly skies” in Trump One with no problems. Just know that you will never officially board Air Force One. Don’t look now, but like a Muslim with a turban, you’ve been “blacklisted.” I don’t agree with 10% of what you say but I appreciate the fact that you’re an honest hustler and an expressive xenophobe. Someone should have told you that if you were going to be a politician you would have to learn how to lie, or at least speak in coded language. That foolishness about telling the truth will only get you hurt. I know your favorite book of the Bible is “Two Corinthians,” but read some of the preceding chapters of the New Testament and you’ll find something in there about how the government and some religious leaders crucified a man for telling the truth. Americans prefer platitudes and placement in deference to principles and problem solving. You may not like the message, but don’t shoot the messenger. It’s been whispered for years so let’s deal with the elephant in the room: Many African Americans have privately complained that President Obama has catered to the needs of immigrants more than those of Blacks. The fact that neither group fits in a separate and unique block notwithstanding, an examination of government figures shows that in at least two areas - deportations and presidential pardons - that’s not true. Let’s first address immigration. “Since coming to office in 2009, Obama’s government has deported more than 2.5 million people - up 23% from the George W. Bush years,” Fusion observed. “More shockingly, Obama is now on pace to deport more people than the sum of all 19 presidents who governed the United States from 1892-2000, according to government data. “...And he’s not done yet. With the clock ticking down his final

months in office, Obama appears to be running up the score in an effort to protect his title as deporter-in-chief from future presidents. To pad the numbers, Homeland Security is now going after the lowest-hanging fruit: women and children who are seeking asylum from violence in Central America. “’This is the only time I remember enforcement raids on families of women and children who are fleeing some of the most violent places on the planet,’ says Royce Bernstein Murray, director of policy for the National Immigrant Justice Center. ‘The families came to the U.S. looking for a hand, but they got the boot.’” Under the headline, “Barack Obama, deporter-in-chief,” the Economist magazine declared,” America is expelling illegal immigrants at nine times the rate of 20 years ago (see article); nearly 2m so far under Barack Obama, easily outpacing any previous president. Border patrol agents no longer just patrol the border; they scour the country for illegals to eject. The deportation machine costs more than all other areas of federal criminal law-enforcement combined.” Also troubling are accusations of racial profiling. In February, Heartland Alliance’s

National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) filed a federal lawsuit demanding that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) release data about the use of racial profiling in the controversial program known as the Priority Enforcement Program (PEP), formerly Secure Communities. Despite the soaring deportations under Obama, Republicans accuse Obama of being soft on immigration. Meanwhile, progressives give Obama little credit for advances he has made trying to reform the criminal justice system. “Today, the President announced 61 new grants of commutation to individuals serving years in prison under outdated and unduly harsh sentencing laws. More than onethird of them were serving life sentences. To date, the President has now commuted the sentences of 248 individuals - more than the previous six Presidents combined. And, in total, he has commuted 92 life sentences, the White House said in a statement March 30. While Obama has commuted the sentences of 248 people, Ford commuted 22, Jimmy Carter 29, Ronald Reagan 13, George H.W. Bush 3, Bill Clinton 61, and George

W. Bush 43. A prisoner’s commutation of sentence involves the reduction of time being served. Unlike a pardon, it does not remove the conviction from that person’s record. Clemency reduces the penalty but also does not remove the conviction. Obama met last week with commutation recipients from both his administration and those granted by Bill Clinton and George W. Bush to discuss how the process can be strengthened. Following lunch, Obama said, “But we’re not done, and we’re going to keep on working on this until I leave. It’s something that I’m going to keep on working on even after I leave the presidency, because - some of you know we had an Easter Prayer Breakfast with ministers, pastors from all around the country of all denominations in which we read Scripture and were reminded of Jesus’s teachings. “And at the heart of my faith, and what I believe is at the heart of the American ideal is, is that we’re all imperfect. We all make mistakes. We have to own those mistakes. We have to take responsibility and learn from those mistakes. But we as a society have to make sure that people who do take responsibility

and own and learn from those mistakes are able to continue to be part of the American family. It’s the right thing to do. It’s the smart thing to do.” The president’s embrace of Kemba Smith, who was given a 24.5 year mandatory sentence at the age of 24 and pardoned in 2000 by Bill Clinton, was posted as photograph of the day on the White House website. The White House statement, issued by White House Counsel Neil Eggleston, said, “Despite the progress we have made, it is important to remember that clemency is nearly always a tool of last resort that can help specific individuals, but does nothing to make our criminal justice system on the whole more fair and just. Clemency of individual cases alone cannot fix decades of overly punitive sentencing policies. So while we continue to work to resolve as many clemency applications as possible - and make no mistake, we are working hard at this - only broader criminal justice reform can truly bring justice to the many thousands of people behind bars serving unduly harsh and outdated sentences.” Obama has additional work to do on both criminal justice and immigration reform.

Between Birth and Death? Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

Have you ever thought about your own obituary? It seems that the inventor of dynamite through some fluke of reporting got to see his in a newspaper and didn’t like what it said about him. This made me contemplate what God might say about mine, but it also gave me pause to think about it myself; the question being, how would I respond to my own obituary? I mean, if you could write your own epitaph, wouldn’t you want it to somehow reflect a life devoted to the Lord? I recently heard on the radio that the greatest enlightenment is to know

the Will of the Lord. The greatest achievement is to do the will of the Lord. If you could craft the truth about your life today, to make sure that when people spoke at your funeral, they would speak of your level of service for the Lord, what would you immediately begin to do differently? In the case of the inventor of dynamite, we now have the Nobel Prize(s) because he didn’t want to be remembered as the inventor of wholesale slaughter. Because he read his own obituary before he actually died, Mr. Nobel was able to do something to positively affect how others might think of him upon his actual death. If they wrote yours today, would it please you? Would it please God? If not, why not? In this instance for me, the thought of death made me consider life, mine. What had I done for the lord, lately, like

today, now? Am I doing anything consciously out of love for Him, rather than the fear of consequence by Him? Do I follow rule because I believe in them or because I am afraid of what will happen if I don’t? That’s an even more interesting scenario if you’re talking about God’s rules. Is my obedience to God based solely on fear? Or, looking at it from a different perspective is my obedience based on love? Whatever they say in my obituary, undoubtedly me and God will know the truth. And if the truth be told, we all want to be remembered fondly. I suppose the thing that made me think about this a little longer than I wanted to, was the truth that new life begins at death. The quality of that life might actually be influenced by one’s spiritual obituary. That obituary might best be viewed

as a new birth certificate. If you can conceptualize that now, then what might you be able to do that would favorably impact your new life. I just thought it would be a beneficial exercise to commit form today forward, to “wordsmithing” your obituary by living a life according to principles you would be proudest of to show god. You pick yours. I’ll pick mine. We both know we’ll be held accountable at that death new life moment. I believe it would be a great effort, a beautiful thing to be able to influence the dash between your birth dates, your physical one and your spiritual one. You see we have no control over those three points of life and death and life again. But that dash will serve us well for eternity. It will be what comprises your obituary here on earth. So please pay attention and may God bless and keep you always.

Hayes, had a strong message for guests at the Legacy of Service Foundation and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc - Omicron Mu Omega Chapter’s annual gala, Pink Jazz. Keeping with the theme: Providing Inspiration - Nurturing Knowledge, Mr. Hayes provided a history lesson as he talked about the demise of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and encouraged alumni to support their alma maters. Citing issues with numerous HBCUs, as efforts are made to close, merge or marginalize them, Mr. Hayes said that these schools were good enough when they were “all we had” and if it was good enough for you, it should be enough for your children. His message was so appropriate, especially when you consider that Alpha Kappa Alpha’s international grand

A native of Memphis, TN., Professor Hayes was educated at the University of Arkansas -Pine Bluff and East Texas State University. (now Texas A&M University- Commerce). She began her career with Garland in 1984 as the office manager for the Northeast Texas Library System (NETLS), and previously held the position of Management Team Coordinator for Garland Power & Light (GP&L) before being named Garland’s City Secretary. Trailblazer: Jessica Dixon Weaver Jessica Dixon Weaver is the first African American female Associate Professor of Law to be awarded tenure at SMU’s Dedman School of Law. Her legal experience began as an associate lawyer in a private law firm, a managing partner of a second law firm, and eventually owner and operator of her own law office. Woman of the Year: The Honorable Toni Rose The Honorable Toni Rose was first elected to the Texas State House of Representatives in 2012 to represent the citizens of District 110. This diverse district includes parts of southern Dallas, Balch Springs and Mesquite, Texas. Over the course of only two legislative sessions, she has authored legislation on senior access to transportation, children’s health care, access to mental health services, emergency preparedness and readiness management. Man of the Year: Reverend Leonard O. Leach Reverend Leonard O. Leach is the Senior Pastor of Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church in Garland, Texas, widely known in the area as “The Mount.” He has directed special events, concerts and outreach activities. In addition, Reverend Leach has led international mission trips to Lusaka,

Zambia and founded MUCH, a nonprofit organization for the prevention of homelessness and development of affordable housing for families and individuals. Mabel Meshach White Businesswoman Award: Monique Murchison Monique Murchison owns and operates Monique Murchison Realty, an affiliate of Keller Williams Realty. During her most recent deployment to Honduras, she spearheaded a project with two USAR Officers to donate over 60 backpacks to the boys’ orphanage in Comayagua, Honduras. This project ensured that young students of Hogar De Niros were equipped with basic essentials to promote education in their community. Humanitarian: Jabari Johnson Jabari Johnson is a product of Dallas, Texas. Mr. Johnson is the founder and president of The Heads Up! Foundation. It is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of young people through sports and life skills development. A former member of the South Dallas Youth Club, he continues to make his mark in the community as a leader who cares about inner-city youth. Ombudsman: M. D. DeWitt, Jr. M. D. DeWitt, Jr. serves diligently as an Ombudsman of the South Dallas Business and Professional Women’s Club, Inc. He is an active supporter of the organization, routinely participating in the club’s Adopt-A-Nursing Home and Adopt-A-School programs, components of the organization’s health, education and economic development service projects.
