-USBC CEO Ron Busby Sr. (center left, red tie), with Industrial Bank CEO Doyle Mitchell along with members of the Black Male Entrepreneurship Institute. Washington, DC- Today, marked a momentous occasion in Washington, DC’s Black business community. In a strategic effort to keep Black dollars circulating in the Black business community, a group of Black male entrepreneurs led by the U.S. Black Chambers Inc. (USBC) opened individual bank accounts with Industrial Bank-one of the nation’s most prestigious Black-owned banks. “This is about more than making the decision to bank with a Black bank, this is about Black business owners taking one of their most valued resources (money) and making the choice to put their money in the hands of a Black-owned business. -said USBC CEO Ron Busby Sr. The stats on the rate in which money circulates in our community is alarming and calls for each and every Black American to reconsider where they’re putting their money. The saying goes ‘Money, Power and Respect.’ Until we have total control of how we circulate our money, our power and respect will continue to be marginalized.” In closing an excerpt from the Houston Forward Times: The dollar circulates almost ten (10) times within the Jewish community before it reaches the outside. The dollar circulates almost six (6) times within the Asian community before it reaches the outside. The dollar circulates an infinite number of times within the White community; more than all other groups. Sadly, the African American dollar does not even circulate one time within its own community. As a matter of fact, the Black dollar only stays in the Black community less than six (6) hours. The U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. (USBC) provides committed, visionary leadership

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, CBC Chairman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) released the following statement in response to the proposed budget deal as it relates to CBC priorities: “The Congressional Black Caucus fully discussed the proposed budget deal and its ramifications as it relates to our constituents. In advance of the vote on Thursday and Friday, we express our discomfort over the budget deal. We desire to enter into immediate negotiations about CBC priorities. “At this time, we are reluctant to support the Omnibus or the Tax Extenders. They are lacking in support for our communities. “Our first concern is that the negotiation process did not include members of our Caucus. It was negotiated in secrecy and much of our information was obtained from news accounts. “The CBC advocates for African American communities. Historically, black communities and institutions have been victims of budget cuts as Congress attempts to reduce the deficit. We have reached a breaking point. African Americans and other communities of color can no longer absorb the cuts and allow deficit reduction to take place on the backs of our constituents.

METRO Turner elected Houston mayor

Sylvester Turner was born and raised in the Acres Homes community in northwest Houston. His parents moved to Acres Homes in 1954, the year Sylvester was born. Recently he was elected mayor of Houston, TX. Sylvester’s mother worked as a maid in the old Rice Hotel in Houston. His father worked as a painter for Continental Ensco and on the weekends, cut yards with his sons to make extra money. The Turners raised nine children in their modest two-bedroom home in Acres Homes. Sylvester lost his father to cancer when he was 13 years old. Sylvester attended neighborhood public schools until forced integration came to Houston and he was bused to Klein High School. After a predictably rocky start, the student body adapted to its new enrollees – and Sylvester was later elected president of the student body and graduated as a valedictorian. Sylvester went on to attend the University of Houston and Harvard Law School before joining the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski. He later founded the Houston law firm of Barnes & Turner in 1983. In 1988, Sylvester was elected to the Texas House of Representatives to serve the people of House District 139 in Harris County. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

w w w. T E X A S M E T R O N E W S . com Starting Jan. 1, 2016, Texans will be able to legally carry their handguns in a holster openly anywhere they could carry concealed in accordance with House Bill 910. Individuals who obtain a License to Carry (LTC) or have a valid concealed handgun license (CHL) will be able to carry their weapon in plain view, when properly secured in a belt or shoulder holster. The City of Dallas has trained 311 and 911 call takers on the new laws and regulations to ensure they are able to answer concerned citizen’s questions. Dallas Police Department has trained police officers on the new laws so that they are aware of what is legal and what is a violation under the new open carry law. The City of Dallas wants to ensure all residents understand the new law and know when to call 911. Citizens are urged to call 911 only when encountering a person who is in clear violation of House Bill 910. Violations can include the removal of the gun from a secured holster, when a gun holder seems intoxicated and when the gun holder is committing a crime or acting in a reckless or suspicious manner. This new law doesn’t mean LTC holders will be able to openly carry anywhere. Holders are prohibited from carrying in certain locations such as worship centers, amusement parks, and governmental meetings subject to the Texas Open Meetings Act. Handguns will not be allowed at high school, collegiate or professional sporting events or interscholastic events at the Dallas Convention Center and the Cotton Bowl. For more information on open carry, please click the following link to watch our educational PSA and review frequently asked questions: http://www. dallascitynews.net/opencarry.

Miller awards $750,000 to grow jobs in Ennis Texas Capital Fund grants help communities invest in local infrastructure and economy AUSTIN - Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller today announced the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) has awarded $750,000 to the city of Ennis for water, sewer, natural gas and street infrastructure improvements through the Texas Capital Fund (TCF). The award will support the creation of a plastic materials manufacturing facility operated by Sterilite Corp. and 40 new full-time jobs. “The Texas Capital Fund is a smart investment that grows jobs and rejuvenates local economies across Texas, Commissioner Miller said. “This award will help enhance economic development in Ennis, and I am proud to support these efforts to create jobs and opportunity for Texans.

Federally funded through the Texas Community Development Block Grant program, TCF provides more than $8 million in competitive awards each year to boost economic development in small Texas communities. “The grant being awarded to the Sterilite Corp. will provide excellent resources to enable them to expand their operations in Ellis County, Rep. John Wray said. “I would like to thank the Texas Department of Agriculture and Commissioner Miller for their support of job-creating businesses in rural communities. TCF is administered by TDA’s Office of Rural Affairs and provides funding for projects in four different program areas: Infrastructure Development, Real Estate Development, Main Street Improvements and Downtown Revitalization.

El Centro to lease Texas Club Building In order to expand Workforce Training, Continuing Education, and Physical Fitness Training program, El Centro College will be leasing the Texas Club space from Dallas Main L.P. The Dallas County Community College District’s chancellor, Dr. Joe May, recommended and members of the Board of Trustees recently approved the lease for the 14th and 15th floors of the former Texas health club facility in the Bank of America Parking Building. The lease will run January 1, 2016, through December 31, 2021. El Centro College will pay Dallas Main L.P. an amount not to exceed $2,125,000 over the fiveyear term. The agreement will generate revenue of $3,577,174 over the five-year period from tuition for credit and continuing education Physical Education courses as well as additional business courses and high school training dual credit courses. Under the new contract agreement, officials estimate that 184 students in credit physical education courses and 275 students in continuing education courses per year will receive services. There is currently no space to provide physical education courses at El Centro and the cost to purchase space in the area surrounding the college is cost prohibitive. This lease agreement will provide 50,000 square feet of space in the former location of Texas Health Club. El Centro will have an expanded course offering to students at a convenient location since the facility is within walking distance of El Centro’s Downtown campus. In addition, Texas Health Club is donating $500,000 of equipment to the college.

Gun bans once had bipartisan support In the horror in San Bernardino, Calif., a husband and wife walked into a social services center armed with two AR-15 style semiautomatic assault rifles and two 9 mm semiautomatic handguns, with 1,400 rounds of ammunition for the rifles. They opened fire, leaving 14 dead and 23 wounded. We now know that they had apparently committed themselves to the Islamic State. This was an act of terror. In Colorado Springs, Colo., Robert Dear walked into a Planned Parenthood clinic armed with a “long gun and started shooting, leaving three dead and nine injured. This, too, was an act of terror.

Despite this, common sense gun control has become a bitter partisan issue. The Washington Post reports that from 1993 to 2007 Republicans were split about 50-50 on gun control, with Democrats 2 to 1 in favor. Then, after the election of Barack Obama, Democrats didn’t change their views, but now 75 percent of Republicans line up against more gun control. Gun ownership - even of assault weapons - is increasingly defended as a “check against government tyranny. After Colorado Springs or San Bernardino, or Connecticut or Oregon or Virginia or South Carolina, the gun lobby and their allies argue that more guns are the answer, not part of the problem.

Our weak gun laws make it “just too easy, as President Obama put it, for terrorists or the mentally unbalanced or the irate to walk in and buy an assault weapon, designed explicitly to kill lots of people in battle. The San Bernardino killings have triggered a fierce political debate. Republican presidential candidates are using the occasion to indict President Obama for being too passive or too weak. Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio condemn the modest reforms to limit the National Security Agency (NSA) access to private telephone records, suggesting that the right to privacy and the Fourth Amendment must be sacrificed in order to counter terrorism. They call for a war on all fronts against terror - except on guns.

Rubio joined with his Republican senators to kill a modest bill seeking to close the loophole that allows people on the terrorist watch lists to buy guns in America. While the fight against terror requires sacrifice and war, he argues, it should not restrict the right of those on terrorist watch lists to buy and hold arsenals.

Common sense gun control won’t happen until this partisan divide is broken. It can advance in blue states, perhaps, and in blue municipalities where the state hasn’t banned local action. National reforms won’t happen until people break the partisan stalemate. This is a time for people of faith - of all denominations - to come together and demand common sense reforms to limit the gun epidemic that continues to spread.

The ban on the sale of assault weapons used to enjoy bipartisan support. Closing of all loopholes for background checks seems just common sense. In fact, four in five Americans support background checks. Similarly, numbers would prevent the mentally ill from owning guns. Seven of 10 support creating a federal database on gun ownership. Majorities would ban the sale of assault weapons.

College in the Spring of 1976 on April 17. Those who had the pleasure of knowing Cornellia Jones King Law were blessed to know a kind, loving, supportive woman with a cute sense of humor. A devout Christian, Nell, was a true friend, just ask Dr. Harry Robinson! No pretense or phoniness about her. She valued her time, family and friends. And she loved Bishop College and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. I met Nell, when I first moved to Dallas over 34 years ago. We naturally bonded as sorors, sisters and friends. She was committed and loving, a family person who was the epitome of a true Delta woman. When I lived alone, Nell suggested that as a young single female, I needed to be with family, her family. In retrospect, I think she wanted me to entertain her son because they had a puppy and I was constantly dashing through the house trying to escape that dog, much to little Cornell’s amusement. Nell and I carpooled to work and during those daily trips we talked about life, family and the future. She was a nurturer, a real mentor. The consummate professional, Nell was like a superwoman to me. She

ONE AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN’S OPINION By Cheryl Smith was beautiful, a stylish dresser, devoted wife and mother. She took care of business at work, at home, in the community and at church. I used to call her Sweet Polly Purebred and Mitchell was her UnderDog, always thinking he could save the day and the two were determined to have me marry an Omega Man. When I moved out of the King household, we remained close. You couldn’t ask for a more loyal friend because she valued honesty and loyalty. I never ever heard her speak maliciously about anyone and she definitely was not a carrier of gossip. Later when she decided to remarry, there was no denying that she was happy and she assured me and the other bridesmaids that we would also be happy because Dennis had a lot of single friends. Imagine the surprise on our faces as each groomsman showed up with his wife or girlfriend in tow. I still remember her laughing at the look on my face. Last year while visiting my mother at Remarkable Healthcare Nursing Home I stopped in to visit Nell as she rested. The next time I visited, Nell was sitting up and as I talked with her family members suddenly I saw a huge smile form on her face. Her eyes lit up and it was like seeing the Nell from the 1980s. I didn’t know if she recognized me but all I could think about is how

beautiful she looked and what a beautiful person she was inside. After that visit, I found myself thinking about her often, wondering if a cure for Alzheimers would be found in time to benefit her. I was thankful she had such a supportive family and I know that it was not easy caring for our loved one. Many share fond memories of Nell. As we celebrate her life, there are some lessons we can learn from this endearing person who was so special, to so many. There are three quotes by another Cornelia — Yolande Cornelia Giovanni, better known as our Soror Nikki Giovanni, --that sums up the life of Nell “I hope I die warmed by the life that I tried to live.â€? Nell’s warmth is felt by many of us today as we reflect on our personal relationship with her. The other Cornelia also said, “Deal with yourself as an individual, worthy of respect and make everyone else deal with you the same way.â€? Nell’s actions commanded respect. And finally Cornelia Nikki Giovanni wrote: “Don’t ever be afraid to come to me and cry‌don’t ever hesitate to look me in the eye. Don’t ever be afraid to tell me how you feel. Remember you’re my girl and we gotta keep it real.â€? Real love, real friendship, real SISTERLY. That was Cornellia Jones King Law.

“Skullia” is Mighty White!!

Quit Playin’ Vincent Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award-winning columnist. The other day I dialed 946-4910. That was my grandmother’s telephone number. She accepted her long distance call from glory years ago, but every once in a while I find myself calling that number. Whenever I needed the 411 on life in America, her seven digits were my first call. During her lifetime area codes weren’t required. Back in the day, Big Mama n’em could be reached at 821 Taylor in North Dallas, 428 Hamilton in South Dallas, 946 Whitehall in Oak Cliff, or 631 Melrose in West Dallas. That’s if she wasn’t working as a maid or nanny for the elite families of Highland Park or University Park, which was 521 Lakeside. Old school racism is making a comeback; we need some historical context and wisdom.

Last week I saw Reverend Al Sharpton on MSNBC looking “Swole.” Now Rev. Al lost 150 pounds, so when I say “Swole,” you who know Black culture know I mean he looked mad as hell. He was standing on the steps where Supreme Court Injustice Antonia “Skullia,” was doing the Donald Trump. “Skullia” was spitting that Trumpbrand of racism, insensitivity and disrespect that you wouldn’t expect from a sitting jurist. “Skullia” took a solemn oath and a life sentence to craft law and equality in the world’s “most advanced democracy. What “Skullia” said in essence, was that the University of Texas didn’t need an Affirmative Action program. He conjectured that most Coloreds aren’t intelligent enough to keep up with UT’s advanced curriculum. The

Negroid would be better served by inferior HBCUs. That’s not verbatim, but in the spirit of George Wallace and Bull Connor, that’s what he meant. I instinctively picked up the phone to call my late Grandmother to get an explanation. In my spiritual exchange with her she replied; “Yes Baby, I saw him…That was Mighty White of him.” “Mama,” I said, “when you use the

down for me. She reminded me that the euphemism “Mighty White of you” had several uses. In some cases, it meant that you were a Negro who had assimilated and believed yourself as White as the Whitest White man. Like “Injustice Clearance Thomass” or “Uncle Ben Carson” she elaborated. Thomass, regrettably, was too ignorant to know that he had been

adage, ‘Mighty White of him’ what do you mean?” She slapped her leg, laughed lavishly and commenced to break it

slandered and slighted as a Black Man and as a prized example of Affirmative Action programs on America’s “finest” campuses.

5

Y’all talk about loudmouth brothers like the Rev. Jesse Jackson or Dallas’ John Wiley Price, but you know Skullia would at least think twice before he hurled those words in their midst. If respect in America is defined as a second thought before an intentional insult, then we get no respect at all. The insults in Black America from Trayvon to Trump have been incessant. The quip also refers to an overwhelming sense of race pride and entitlement. It’s that air of unfathomable, unreasonable and uncontested arrogance that only a few White men can muster. It’s like someone giving you back what they stole from you and expecting to hear thanks. To this day Republicans brag that Black folks owe the GOP because Abraham Lincoln announced emancipation over a people whom God Almighty created to be free. Those agonists and protagonists at Fox Noose and their ilk would prefer you believe that Skullia wasn’t being racist, he was being real. Racist or real, it was Mighty White of him to speak on our behalf. I utter imprecatory prayers for Skullia and Thomass daily. Mighty White of me huh?

CURRY : Don’t be Fooled by ‘Silent Clarence’ In arguably the most important civil rights case the U.S. Supreme Court will hear this term - a case that could ban or limit the consideration of race in public employment, government contracting and higher education - Clarence Thomas, the lone Black justice, was silent. Of the justices hearing the case, only Thomas did not utter a single syllable last Wednesday during 1 hour and 35-minutes of oral arguments in Fisher v. University of Texas-Austin. The University of Texas considers seven factors in its affirmative action program: demonstrated leadership qualities, extracurricular activities, honors and awards, essays, work experience, community service and special circumstances such as applicant’s socioeconomic status, family composition, special family responsibilities, socioeconomic status of applicant’s high school and race. Fisher sued over race, claiming that considering race, even with with other factors, violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. She sued even though the university said she was unqualified and would not have been admitted even if there had been no affirmative action program. She sued even though the 14th Amendment took effect in 1868 to protect newly-freed slaves, not unqualified Whites. Her attorneys conveniently ignored that universities - except in percentage plan cases where students are admitted based solely on their

class rankings - look at a variety of factors when admitting an incoming class. In fact, one African By George E. Curry American and four Hispanics George E. Curry, former editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine and editor-inwith lower scores than Fisher chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service (NNPA.) were offered provisional He is a keynote speaker, moderator, and media coach. Curry can be reached admission under a UT summer through his Web site, www.georgecurry.com. You can also follow him at program. So were 42 Whites. In www.twitter.com/currygeorge and George E. Curry Fan Page on Facebook. addition, 168 African American and Hispanic applicants with scores identical to or higher than Fisher were denied admission to the summer program, according to a university brief. Yet, one of Fisher’s staunchest backers is “Silent Clarence” Thomas, who is quiet on the bench, but has been a wrecking ball against affirmative action. In their book, Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas, Kevin Merida and Michael A. Fletcher, two colleagues at the Washington Post, wrote: “Every Thomas employer, from [Former Missouri Sen. John] Danforth, who gave him his first job, to President George H.W. Bush, who nominated him to the Supreme Court, chose Thomas at least partly because he is black. Race is Although Scalia is being roundly criticized a central fact of his meteoric rise, and Thomas has over his recent remarks about Blacks needing to alternately denied it and resented it - all the way attend “lesser” colleges, it was the same position to the top.” espoused by Thomas in 2003 when the court In every court case involving affirmative action, upheld the University of Michigan Law School “Silent Clarence” has voted against it, including affirmative action program. Texas v. Hopwood, Adarand v. Pena and Grutter v. In his dissent, Thomas said, “...Nowhere in any Bollinger. of the filings in this Court is any evidence that the

TRUTH TO POWER

purported ‘beneficiaries’ of this racial discrimination prove themselves by performing at (or even near) the same level as those students who receive no preferences. “....The Law School tantalizes unprepared students with the promise of a University of Michigan degree and all of the opportunities that it offers. These overmatched students take the bait, only to find that they cannot succeed in the cauldron of competition. And this mismatch crisis is not restricted to elite institutions.” Thomas wrote, “While these students may graduate with law degrees, there is no evidence that they have received a qualitatively better legal education (or become better lawyers) than if they had gone to a less ‘elite’ law school for which they were better prepared...” That’s quite a comment from someone who attended both Holy Cross College and Yale Law School under affirmative action. In at least one respect, Thomas is worse than Scalia - he is the only justice who volunteered that Grutter should be overturned - even though Fisher isn’t seeking that resolution in her petition. When the Supreme Court first heard Fisher two years ago, Thomas wrote, “I write separately to explain that I would overrule Grutter v. Bollinger,

539 U. S. 306 (2003), and hold that a State’s use of race in higher education admissions decisions is categorically prohibited by the Equal Protection Clause.” While he wants to exclude consideration of race in almost all instances, he feels it is okay for universities to use alumni preference or legacy programs that favor privileged applicants whose parents have attended a certain university. “The Equal Protection Clause does not, however, prohibit the use of the unseemly legacy preferences or many other kinds of arbitrary admissions procedures,” Thomas wrote in Grutter. “What the Equal Protection Clause does prohibit are classifications made on the basis of race. So while legacy preferences can stand under the Constitution, racial discrimination cannot.” It’s not surprising that Thomas is known as the court’s cruelest justice. The late U.S. Appeals Court Judge Leon Higginbotham observed, “I have often pondered how is it that Justice Thomas, an African-American, could be so insensitive to the plight of the powerless. Why is he no different, or probably worse, than many of the most conservative Supreme Court justices of the century? I can only think of one Supreme Court justice during the century who was worse than Justice Clarence Thomas: James McReynolds, a white supremacist who referred to blacks as ‘niggers.’”

Money Run: Devil cashes in on streets of Berlin A review of the movie Victoria By Eva D. Coleman From the flicker in the first frame, euphoric twists and turns encapsulate viewers on an epic one-take journey as Victoria takes risks that pay off. Victoria, played by Laia Costa, is a young woman from Spain who works in a cafe. She’s out on the town, partying solo. Upon exiting the basement party zone, she ascends to the street level where all hell breaks loose...perhaps a rise of the devil from the pit. Set in Germany, Victoria encounters four Berliners during her exit. They’ve made a few attempts, to no avail, to get into the club. They shout at the bouncers that they’ll one day own the club. While this may not eventually ring true, they’ll definitely own the night. Sonne, played by Frederick Lau, appears to be the most sane out of the troublesome four. His attraction to Victoria is magnetic. This forceful pull is somewhat envied by the rest of his crew. In addition, its magic lures Victoria to take part in an evening of drunkenness, drug-induced highs, mayhem and crime that proves fatal for the majority of the group.

“Fly away ‘Birdman’ – there’s a new one-shot wonder in town. EXHILARATING!” -Guy Lodge, Variety

“A MASTERPIECE.” -Matt Holzman, KCRW Los Angeles

This movie leads viewers into dark spaces. Some of the most dramatic moments are those with no dialogue at all. Intense music heightens the emotion of seeing the facial expressions during a muted conversation among a few of the men and Victoria during an elevator scene. A fierce piano performance conducted by Victoria, showcasing her skills to Sonne, is very telling as well. They even discuss the foreign name of the music piece...which translates to Devil. Since the story never stops...no cuts, no next day, nothing; weaving from scene to scene is cinematography at its finest. The orchestration of such a feat is remarkable and leaves you wondering, “Where is this movie taking me next?” While it eventually returns to where it started, the ascension after that is one that leads to many deaths. Playing with the devil, or allowing use by the devil leaves Victoria weeping over what she’s witnessed and walking away alone...with cash, I might add. It’s far from the experience of life’s disappointments she previously shared. While Victoria might have you questioning her decisions or wanting to rush some portions of the film that seem to go on much longer than needed, the movie sets you up for a ride or die adventure that places you in the middle of all the action.

Legendary Black attorney succumbs to pancreatic cancer

The Dallas Examiner and the Law Office of James C. Belt Jr. mourns the loss of Attorney James C. Belt Jr. For close to 40 years, he has served the community as a civil and criminal lawyer. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from Pan American University, Edinburg, in 1968. And went on to earn a Juris Doctorate from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University in Houston in 1977. He opened his private practice in the heart of South Dallas, where he served those who needed him most. Belt, who was also a Dallas Examiner co-publisher, sat on the board of the National Newspaper Publisher Association, the official Black Press of America and the NNPA Foundation Board. He served as more of a silent partner and advisor, but it was his support that has helped The Dallas Examiner continue to serve the community for almost 30 years.

He was the founder of the Dallas Black Criminal Bar Association – an organization of Black lawyers in the private practice of law in Dallas County. He was a member of the National Bar Association, Texas Bar Association, J.L. Turner Legal Association and the Inns of Court. In September, he received the Living Legends award from J.L. Turner Legal Association. As a well-respected leader in the community and activist, he also served the community by offering his words of wisdom and years of knowledge and experience. During the early 2000s, he co-hosted Dallas Examiner Live on KNON Radio. He previously sat on the Texas Southern University Board of Regents in Houston, Dallas Area Rapid Transit Board and the Texas Rural Foundation Board. He was also a lifetime member of the NAACP. Belt held strong spiritual beliefs and was dedicated to serving the Lord. For close to 40 years, he was a dedicated member of St. Luke Community United Methodist Church, where he was an active member of the Good News Sunday School Class. Each year, the class would offer scholarships to college students and automobiles for those in need of transportation. He was a founder and tri-chairman of the St. Luke Community

Leadership Luncheon. He also served as a trustee board chairman at St. Luke. At the end of a long battle with pancreatic cancer, Belt was admitted to Baylor Medical Center, where he died Sunday at 5 p.m. due to complications. He was 71 years old. He was a dedicated family man. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mollie F. Belt; his children, James C. Belt III, Melanie Belt, MD and Carlos Cavazos; 10 grandchildren, Brittany Cavazos, Jerry Cavazos, C.J. Cavazos, Joshua Cavazos, Michael Cavazos, Lejond Cavazos, Chloe Cavazos, Bryce Belt, Dylan Belt and Melania McDaniel; two daughterin-laws, Melba Cavazos and Cherrese Belt; and one son-in-law, Demetrius McDaniel, Esq. The wake will be held on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Black and Clark Funeral Home, located at 2517 E. Illinois Ave. The funeral will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Luke

“Community” United Methodist Church, located at 5710 E R L Thornton Freeway, 75223. For inquiries, please call Robyn H. Jimenez at 214-941-3100.

Change Gone Come Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington In the midst of imminent change in my life I ran across this and am sharing again. Most of us would agree with the concept that the one sure thing that we know about life is change. The comparison to a roller coaster seems appropriate, a frightening one at that. Life is full of twists and turns and inevitable ups and downs with people coming and going and emotions frayed at the proverbial last nerve because of it. Life takes your plans and destroys them in favor of its own. It’s enough to make anyone skeptical about life’s purpose. We question everything we hold dear. As Christians, we know free will is supposed to have something to do with what happens to us as we each choose or don’t choose, decide or don’t decide. Our fate is wrapped in the outcome of each. We often find ourselves caught up in quagmires of discontent due to situations we created by simply making the wrong choices. That’s why I find the subject of change in scripture so fascinating. “In paths they have not known, I will guide them.” Isaiah 42:16 clearly indicates that when you attempt or are forced to changed your life, seek God, because divine help will be needed. It’s a spiritual requirement. Oftentimes in the bible, whenever someone begins to accept Christ, challenges

await. Fear is prevalent and faith gets tested. I mean walking by faith and not by sight is unnatural in the natural world. It just is. This kind of change in your spiritual life is supposed to fortify everything in your supernatural existence. Joshua 1:9 lets us know that from the moment we begin to consciously expand our awareness of God, we must take Him everywhere we go or, risk losing ourselves to our own devices, much like the Israelites in the desert. “Be not dismayed, for the Lord thy God is with you wherever you go.” The easiest thing to fall prey to in this life it appears is all of the stuff, the temptations, the tragedies that will surely come our way every day, particularly as Christians. We live in a materialistic world framed in 30 second sound bites, news of instant wealth and the constant pursuit of more. Fantasy and instant gratification are but a click away. If you have no spiritual fallback position, you will get caught up in defining yourself by how much you have, what you can buy and what pleasures you can exploit. And don’t forget to buy a gun to protect it all from those who have no qualm about taking it from you. Under these circumstances life can make you feel inadequate and anxious as it constantly challenges you and changes your outlook about it. More, you see, is never enough. Now this spiritual awareness that I mentioned gives perspective to all of this change and disruption. The bible promises peace and peace of mind. “My presence shall go with you and give you rest.” Exodus 33:14. The understanding of eternal existence, of the spiritual side of man should allow you to put into perspective the contradictions and absurdities in this life. I am constantly amazed at how little I really need in life as I grow older, compared with what I thought I needed when I was younger. Focusing on God actually brings clarity to the soul and subsequently order to life’s chaos. Peace of mind abounds in the hearts of those who know and seek the truth.

NBJC Expands Health and Wellness Initiatives with New Leadership Role Washington, DC – The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), the nation’s leading civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, is proud to announce the expansion of its Black LGBT Health and Wellness Initiative with the creation of a new leadership role—Program Officer for LGBT Health and Venton C. Jones, Jr. Wellness Initiatives. Venton C. Jones Jr., MSHCAD, NBJC’s former Events and Operations Manager, will take on this new role to foster and expand the health and wellness sector as an institutional priority for the organization. As the Program Officer for LGBT Health and Wellness Initiatives, Venton will lead NBJC’s advocacy andprogrammatic efforts to improve the overall health and wellness of the Black LGBT, queer and same gender loving population in our nation. “I am delighted that Venton will continue his tenure at NBJC in this new role, which is a top priority for our organization,” said Sharon J. Lettman-Hicks, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer. “Venton was a critical voice in the development of this portfolio. Institutionally, we are prepared to address the unequal and inequitable conditions that Black communities have historically endured in the health care sector of society. In addressing the health and wellness of the Black LGBT population—including the HIV epidemic—NBJC will bring voice and take action to ensure that our constituents are recognized and receive culturally competent care. I am confident that Venton will do a phenomenal job in leading our efforts.” With the support of the Elton Johns AIDS Foundation, NBJC created the Black LGBT Health and Wellness Initiative in December of 2014 to address current health crises and disparities in culturally competent wellness programs that target Black LGBT people and families. This overlooked community represents multiple populations that demonstrate higher health disparities and a need for swift and strategic action. By integrating targeted messaging with informative programming catering to Black people who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and same gender loving (LGBTQ/SGL), the NBJC Black LGBT Health and Wellness Initiative works to provide opportunities for

outreach and education, testing and treatment to improve the overall health outcomes for Black and LGBTQ/SGL people. Venton will lead this effort at NBJC to strategically and innovatively bring voice and visibility to Black LGBT health and wellness concerns. “As a passionate advocate for marginalized and underserved communities, particular the Black LGBT community, I am honored and eager to continue the imperative work of implementing policy solutions which provide more resources to Black LGBT people and our families,” said Jones, Program Officer for NBJC’s Health and Wellness Initiatives. “Critical to this work is ensuring that all Americans, especially those communities who face syndemic challenges, have access to quality and National Black Justice Coalition affordable health insurance. This is the first step in addressing health disparities impacting our community.” Jones Jr. represents a new generation of national leaders committed to advancing equality and social justice for the African American and LGBT communities. Prior to joining NBJC, Venton worked extensively in the areas of non-profit administration, public health communications and community organizing. He has served as an expert consultant on mobilizing LGBT communities of color, HIV/AIDS and other health disparities for a number of agencies and government entities throughout the United States, including the White House. He has been featured in a number of publications and other media outlets, including JET magazine, Poz magazine and BET. Venton received his Bachelor of Science degree in Community Health from Texas A&M University and his Master of Science degree in Health Care Administration from The University of Texas at Arlington. Most recently, Venton was selected to serve on the Board of Trustees for AIDS United next year. “AIDS United is thrilled to have Venton join our Board of Trustees in 2016. His immense experience tying social justice, health, and community organizing together will undoubtedly bring valuable perspective and insights to our Board. We look forward to Venton’s leadership as AIDS United pursues our mission to end AIDS across the United States,” states Michael Kaplan, President and CEO of AIDS United. In his new role at NBJC, Venton will work to address health disparities that disproportionately impact Black LGBT people, including HIV/AIDS. Central to his work is educating and moving to action public policy leaders and other key stakeholders on the

critical challenges that hinder the Black LGBT community from achieving holistic health. This includes working towards public

policies that foster a more culturally competent health care system for Black LGBTQ/SGL people.

Reel-ality TV Talk By Marquesa LaDawn George Curry Media Columnist This week's episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA) started with Kenya calling Cynthia to check in with her about how she's feeling after that crazy fight and invite her to an outing with the ladies. Let's face it, Kenya loved the negative attention on someone else involving her nemesis Porsha.

Porsha tried hard to turn the situation around, Cynthia insisted on fighting, I (and many on social media) think it was about Peter and Porsha just happened to be there. This fight was a bit much for Kim Fields, who quickly learned that being a part of this group will never be a picnic. I have to say, Kim brings an energy to the show that's needed to squash arguments but may not work well in this forum. I heard the ratings fell to an all-time low. I guess the RHOA audience cannot deal with a reconciliation so quickly.

Cynthia seemed embarrassed and confused in this episode about her fight with Porsha. She knows in her head she was really fighting Peter. That's the thing about anger - it comes out in one way or another. I like that Cynthia was willing to make up with Porsha and she seemed to want to share the responsibility. My take, she needed to own it. She got heated over nothing and then threw the first punch. And Porsha reacted. It's interesting how things come back around - I think we call it karma.

In the Beverly Hills Housewives (RHOBH) world, things picked up this week, thanks goodness. Poor Kyle seems to be on an emotional rollercoaster with her siblings. She was so excited about being invited to her niece Nicki Hilton's wedding. But within a few minutes into the episode, she got disinvited then re-invited with terms. Ugh... I like Kyle, but she is a fame chaser and her family sometimes needs her to turn the cameras off.

Cynthia was so judgmental of Porsha when she pulled Kenya's hair at a past reunion after Kenya instigated it. Now, who's in the same chair without the instigating? Just saying...

Lisa Vanderpump is back judging the heck out of Kyle's family. She was a bit upset that she was disinvited from the wedding but not re-invited like Kyle.

Smiling with an "I told you, you have issues face," Kenya could not wait to meet with Porsha to discuss the fight. Kenya was glowing with entitlement. She wanted Porsha to see some sort of pattern. Within a few minutes Porsha was upset about Kenya's judgmental attitude and told her so. I was happy to see Kenya switch gears and pull back the meanness and really be a friend. At least she pretended to be, which was progress for Kenya.

Also in Beverly Hills, we saw poor suffering Yolanda. It's so sad to see her go from the Hollywood wife with everything to a frail and sick wife that's getting divorced. For some reason, David Foster, has forgotten the part of the vows, in sickness and in health. Yolanda dedicated her life to serving him as his wife and now that she's extremely ill, he's moving on.

Yes, Porsha has a short fuse and can be driven to an intense level. However, in this fight with Cynthia, she was 100 percent the victim. In case you've been sleeping under a rock and did not hear about the huge misunderstanding between Porsha and Cynthia, here goes. In short, Cynthia went off on Porsha for calling her a B***h, in a playful manner. Cynthia began yelling and screaming. Although

Of course this has not all played out on the show yet, but has in the blogosphere. David now blames the show for his marriage ending. Really? No, David, the world gets to see how truly unloveable you are. DAYES: Ask Pam about healthcare Q I’ve been on Medicaid for several months and drawing SSI from Social Security Administration (SSA). I’ll be turning age 62 next month, I was informed by SSA that my SSI would go away because I’ll start drawing a Social Security Retirement check. Since my retirement income will be significantly greater than the SSI I’ll no longer be eligible for Medicaid assistance. I’m concerned about keeping some medical assistance so my question is will I get Medicare too when

Dear Alma,

I turn 62 next month? A - That depends; people are eligible to enroll in Medicare prior to age 65 only if they’re on Social Security Disability and have met the 24-month waiting period, or have a special condition. Check with the Social Security Administration to see when you will be eligible for Medicare. If you find that you’re not eligible for Medicare yet, then you can always visit yourtexasbenefits.com or call 2-1-1, that’s if you live in Texas, to find what medical resources are available in your area.

Medicare Annual Open Enrollment period: October 15th thru December 7th. The Affordable Care Act - Federal Marketplace Exchange – 2016 Open Enrollment period: November 1st 2015 thru January 31st 2016. P A M E L A J. D A Y E S is a Licensed & Certified Health Insurance Agency serving North Texas area. She is passionate about learning and gaining knowledge in the area of HealthCare reform. She is devoted to passing on that knowledge in particularly to the Senior Market. Her expertise is in making Medicare clear and understandable. I look forward to answering your questions. Confronting an Alcoholic Friend Ask Alma

I have a dear friend who is the sweetest, Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans over 25 years, kindest person you could ever hope to including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the know. She remembers everything you’ve Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@ ever told her, and always follows up to yahoo.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and twitter @almaaskalma. find out how things went. But, she’s a drinker. The last time we met for brunch, knowledge, she has never been confronted about there was unlimited champagne, and she had seven her problem or had to admit to it. She’s allowed or eight glasses. When we go out for dinner, she to continue this charade because she’s composed, always has multiple glasses of wine. There is no way calm, employed and performs as if she has it all I can keep up with her, so I just nurse my drink so together. she doesn’t feel like she’s drinking alone. The ugly: She doesn’t have it all together. She knows The drinking doesn’t change her personality, she how much she drinks, but she thinks she can handle basically stays the same, not louder or sadder or it because of the enablers she has surrounded sillier. I’ve never once seen her out of control. What herself with. And yep, you’re one of ‘em. concerns me most is when she drives home after My Uncle Dan (God rest his soul) was an absolute we go out. I usually try to drive, so she can feel drunk from 5:00 pm on Friday until 10:00 pm on comfortable if she wants to drink, but once in a Sunday. Come Monday morning, he was clean while she insists on driving because she feels like as the Board of Health, and never missed a day she should share it. Then, I’m petrified for both of us. I know I should be ordering cabs, but I don’t want to offend her. I know she’s unhappy in her job and she’s living far from her family, although she is so upbeat that you would never know if she had anything on her mind. I have never said anything about her drinking to her, but I’m wondering if maybe I should. If I did, what would I say? Or should I just not bring it up? Dear Friend:

I’m so glad you’re pondering this. Oh yes, sweetie pie, you’ve got to bring it up. It’s your sistergirlfriend duty to help save her life. I know, I know, confronting a loved one about an addiction is a rough road to travel. Once the words come out, you’ve gotta dodge speed bumps, gravel pits and potholes the size of a mini-van. Nevertheless, there’s no excuse to ever park on the street of silence. She needs you and I commend you for stepping up. Now, let’s take a minute to weigh in on the good, the bad and the ugly that stands before you. The good: she’s your dear sister-girlfriend andor you o.com, (214) 514-9553 love her. It breaks your heart to think she’s pained in any way. You want to protect her from any hurt, harm or danger. The bad: She’s a functioning alcoholic. So far, to our

of work. Where I’m from it’s called “carrying your liquor.” For most of us, when we think of an alcoholic, what comes to our mind’s eye, is a person who’s unkempt, homeless, unemployed with no family to speak of. But that’s not the truth of the matter. Everybody knows an Uncle Dan. Bottom line is, if you abuse alcohol every day or just on the weekends, you have a problem and it’s up to your family and friends to call you out on it. Allow me to reiterate for loves sake, yes, have that hard conversation with your friend. I’d suggest you go to alcoholic.org; it explains how to take the first step with love and kindness. It tells you what to say, how to say it, and what to expect after you’ve said it. All best of blessings to you both, my dear. It may not feel like it right now, but let me be the first to say, you’re doing the right thing. I pray your friend will be able to receive it.
