JOHNSON: Celebrating Women
From the Capitol Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
Since 1981, America has recognized March as Women’s History Month. Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate the successes of America’s women throughout our history and the courage and sacrifice of the bold women pioneers who broke down many barriers facing women. The 2016 theme for women’s history month is: “Working to form a more perfect union: Honoring Women in Public Service and government.” This theme encourages us to recognize and honor the countless women who were trailblazers in the formation of our country and the advancement of our democracy. Since America’s founding, women have been active participants in our nation’s government. Even as they fought for representation and the right to vote, women served in roles that shaped and molded the fabric of our nation. Susanna Salter
is an example of early champion. She was elected as the first mayor of a US city in 1887, decades before women were granted the right to vote. As the first registered nurse to have ever served in Congress, I stand on the shoulders of many great women who paved the way for me, and for others. They include Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin, the first woman to serve in Congress; Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to the House of Representatives, and my personal mentor, Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, the first African American elected from the state of Texas to serve in the House. Each year as we celebrate the achievements of women, I am encouraged and inspired by the strength, the courage, and the passion of these women. Yes women have progressed significantly, but there is much more that needs to be done to ensure gender quality. Although the very first piece of legislation that President Obama signed into law was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, designed to produce a level playing field in the workplace, today women only make

seventy-nine cents compared to each dollar that a man makes for the exact same work. While women earn sixty percent of all undergraduate and master’s degree in this country, they only comprise twenty-five percent of all executive level positons and account for less than five percent of the chief executive officers who run Fortune 500 companies. The success of our nation depends on the economic progress and security of women and working families. As Congresswoman Jordan once eloquently stated, “What the people want is very simple--- they want an America as good as its promise.” While representing you in Congress, I will continue to fight for an economic agenda that works for women and their families. Our mothers, our wives, our sisters, and our daughters deserve the very same opportunities as men have in this society. This Women’s History Month, I ask you to join me in celebrating the contributions that America’s women have made to our country and in advocating for new opportunities to provide women with the economic security that they deserve and their families need.

Dallas ISD has 14 National Merit finalists
Dallas ISD has 14 finalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The students have a chance at the 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $32 million. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in
www. T E X A S M E T R O N E W S . com 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Each year, approximately 1.5 million students undergo PSAT/NMSQT tests. Of those, approximately 15,000 become finalists. Being named a National Merit Scholar finalist is among the most prestigious national recognitions in high school. “We are proud of these students for achieving this important academic milestone,” Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said. “We will definitely be cheering them on as they move forward in the competition for this coveted scholarship.” To advance from the semifinalist to the finalist round, students must submit SAT scores that confirm the earlier PSAT/ NMSQT performance, have an outstanding academic record, and be endorsed and recommended by a high school official. They must also submit an application that includes high school courses and grades, extracurricular and volunteer activities, and a self-descriptive essay. The National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced next month. Here are the National Merit finalists from Dallas ISD: Booker T. Texas Alliance of Black School Educators announces 2016 Demonstration Schools The Texas Alliance of Black School Educators (TABSE) announced three Texas school campuses as 2016 TABSE Demonstration Schools: Newman-Smith High School, (Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD), Elsie Robertson Lancaster STEM Middle School (Lancaster ISD), and Ursula Stephens Elementary (Katy ISD) at its annual state conference held in Frisco in March. According to Dr. Tory Hill, the 2016 conference and Demonstration Schools committee chairman and HAABSE (Houston Area Affiliate) President-Elect, selecting these campuses from more than 60 others was not an easy task. “Each school has a unique skill set. All three campuses did a phenomenal job in all of the areas, but the piece that really stood out was instructional programming,” he said. “They were building leadership capacity, had sustainable models that could be replicated, making sure that students were experiencing optimal learning as well as first time teachers, interventions. There was effective leadership on all levels and very clear directions.” Although the Dr. J. Cummings Demonstration Schools Conference Committee was formed and introduced at the HAABSE Teacher of the Year Banquet in February 2014 by current TABSE president, Dr. Michael D. McFarland, the program is rooted in the early days of the professional organization according to Dr. Hill and TABSE founder, Dr. Jay Cummings, who helped present the first proposal to the national organization in the 1980s. “We observed two schools in the same area, performing very differently and wondered why. Then, Dr. Cummings and his team sought out schools that had a major population of students of African American descent, very similar state funding levels and area demographics that
MARCH 30, 2016
were performing well. The team visited the schools to see their educational plan in action, studied it and shared with educational leaders of low-performing campuses with the goal of creating less competition but more collaboration. “There are still a lot of teachers who are effective, but have never worked in an effective school,” Dr. Cummings said. Selected TABSE Demonstration Schools are Texas-based high-performance, high-progress campuses that have proven, reproducible, sustainable educational models and systems in place that consistently promote student learning and staff growth initiatives in accordance with the now seven-strand evaluative system. Hill clarified that eligible schools must serve mostly minority students and have the following criteria to be a model school: Effective leadership at all levels and are building capacity on campus, a clearly articulated and integrated mission and vision, high performance and expectations for students and staff, instructional programming that ensures students are college and career ready, systems in place for the formal assessment of students, systems to support a safe and positive learning environment for students and an active community, parent engagement in the learning process. Principal Stephanie Vaughn of Ursula Stephens Elementary in Katy ISD was elated to learn of her campus’ selection. “It was such a huge honor,” she said. “Anytime that we can share what we are doing with others to help them on their journey is an honor and it makes us proud.” This Katy ISD campus has about 800 students of which about 67% are economically disadvantaged and 50% are English language learners. In its nine-year existence, it has received the distinction of a recognized school, exemplary campus for three consecutive years and has met the Texas Education Agency standard for the last three years. Yvette Sylvan, who served with Vaughn for seven years, has seen the development of the campus’ sustainable model. “We knew that in order for everyone to be accountable for student learning, we all had to have a clear and collective vision. Then, we hired around the vision and high expectations. Once we had the right people in place, we had to figure out how to retain and celebrate those teachers and. Then, we went back to the mission statement to have staff and students to create personal and professional goals that connected back to our mission for student achievement.” TABSE is all about replication of campus success and Sylvan is actually a product of Vaughn’s sustainable model. She recently became principal of Franz Elementary in Katy ISD and has spent the last year putting the same systems in place. “Starting from scratch, it was easy for me to know what I wanted,” she said. “I used the same practice of hiring around our mission and vision and goal setting and staff celebration that I learned at Stephens.” When Elsie Robertson Lancaster STEM Middle School in Lancaster ISD was selected as 2016 TABSE Demonstration School, principal Pamela Brown was extremely pleased with the news.
3 “It adds to the list of recognitions that Lancaster Middle School has received this year,” she said. “We were recognized by the state as a Title I High-Progress Reward School by TEA earlier this year and now, we get to add being a demonstration school to our campus trophy case. This, along with other awards that our students, teachers and student organizations are receiving affirms the hard work that is being done.” Lancaster Middle School has an enrollment of more than 1,000 students of which 87.7% are economically disadvantaged and about 6.1% are English language learners. Yet, with this demographic, this campus and the district has met or exceeded the standard set by the Texas Education Agency for the past two years. Brown added, “We have accomplished a lot and it feels good to be recognized for the hard work. We do not have the easiest demographic to work with and there are some constraints that others may not face in their district. Despite all of this, we are still high-performing and excelling—staff and students are still motivated. We don’t use our constraints as excuses, we use them as motivational tools to get better.” Newman-Smith High School in Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD was the high school campus selected this year and Principal Joe Pouncy was happy when he heard that his campus was selected. “We have a great school, with a great culture anchored on keen teacher expectations, academic rigor and enrollment in advanced courses by all capable students,” he said. “Our focus is student learning and achievement and our goal is the development of intrinsically motivated, confident young adults that believe they can achieve any goal they set in life.” Newman-Smith High School has an enrollment of more than 2,100 students consisting of about 60% economically disadvantaged 9.2% English Language Learners. They also met the TEA standard related to the most recent assessment. TABSE is proud to recognize schools and leadership teams that have positioned themselves to lead others into success and will continue to seek out those who model sustainable best practices.

Rep. Giddings and #WomensHistoryMonth Texas State Representative Helen Giddings continues her salute to women, during Women’s History Month: Inspiring mother of nine, Ruby Mae Turner. At age 30, Mrs. Turner would marry Eddie Turner, becoming the proud parents of nine treasured children, including Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. They shared a very fulfilling marriage until Mr. Turner’s untimely passing in 1986, leaving Mrs. Turner as the “Captain of the Ship. Mrs. Turner worked for many years Ruby Mae Turner in housekeeping at the Rice Hotel in downtown Houston. Although she never learned to drive, she always found a way to get her sons and daughters where they needed to go. She dedicated herself to her children and meeting all of their needs. She was also a devout Christian, worshiping at Magnolia Missionary Baptist Church, New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, and ultimately Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church. Eventually, her health began to decline and her memory began to fade. Despite this, she still liked to join in singing her favorite song, “This Little Light of Mine, and her children ensured she could remain in her home, which was ever her refuge and the gathering place for her cherished family. Mrs. Turner’s fierce independence and deep devotion to her family and faith continues to hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew her. She reminds us that not all heroic women are on the front pages of newspapers or attending high priced galas and fundraisers. Ruby Mae Turner was a hero because of her selflessness and deep devotion to her family under extremely difficult circumstances. Ruby Mae Turner shared many of the same values with my mother, Catherine Ferguson. Interestingly, Mrs. Turner was born August 12, 1924 and my mother was born exactly one year earlier: August 12, 1923. She did not allow the loss of her husband to give her nine children any less than the lives they deserved. She sacrificed on their behalf, just like so many mothers in America and across the world. It’s important that women’s history month does not fail to recognize and applaud all of the heroes who may not be in history books, but live on in the hearts of their children and the communities they served. There is no question that Ruby Mae Turner was one of those heroes.

In the places where Eddie Bernice Johnson made history, she has always sought to make sure to hold the door for those who followed. I am honored to call her my Congresswoman and my friend. Ann Marie Williams Ms. Williams found her love of the arts in high school. Field trips to the opera, symphony, and ballet provided exposure to dance as a profession, and she began to take private dance lessons at the YWCA in Dallas. After earning her Ann Williams undergraduate degree, she would then become the first woman to receive a Master’s degree in dance from Texas Women’s University. She was then hired to head up the first dance department at Bishop College in Dallas. After funding for dance was cut, she would form the Dallas Black Dance Academy to teach children who no longer had a place to take dance lessons. At the coaxing of staff, she also founded a dance company and the Dallas Black Dance Theater was born. Serving over 95,000 patrons in the North Texas region each year, the Dallas Black Dance Theatre has inspired a new generation of Texans to participate in dance as a means to express their creativity. Through professional dance concert performances, arts-in-education programs, and community outreach events, the Dallas Black Dance Theatre has made an invaluable impact on the people of Dallas and beyond. Dallas Black Dance Theater is the only predominately minority professional dance company in the five-state region of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas, and under Ann Williams’ leadership, they have filled that void with a steadfast determination. In May of 2014, Ms. Williams officially retired as Artistic Director of the organization. However, she continues to provide guidance as an emeritus member of the Board of Directors. Although growing up in the South side of Chicago, Hall was born in Beaumont, Texas. She was introduced to the entertainment industry at the age of seven when her father, a jazz musician, began to take her to clubs and local events. After graduating from high school, Hall attended Irma P. Hall Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa where she was selected for her first acting role in a theatrical production of Amahl and the Night Visitors. Hall would go on to teach in Dallas for 24 years, before quitting for medical reasons. After moving back to Chicago, she would eventually be discovered by actor and director Raymond St. Jacques while performing at a poetry reading. This started an enormously successful career on the stage and in film. Her performance in films like A Family Thing, Soul Food, and The Ladykillers have earned her a spot in the Texas Film Hall of Fame. She is also the recipient of an NAACP Image Award and a Chicago Film Critics Award. Perhaps more importantly, she is also the co-founder of the Dallas Minority Repertory Theatre and the founder and Artistic Director of the African American Repertory Theatre in DeSoto. Through these endeavors, she has shared her knowledge and expertise to a new generation of African American performers. Irma Hall has led an extraordinary acting career and is now empowering the boys and girls of my district to express themselves through the arts. For that, she is a Texas hero. The group of over 50 incredible African-American professional women is passionate about serving the Dallas, Texas community by providing transformational programs for girls and women. In particular, they have created and developed the “So SMAART program that works with elementary and middle school girls to encourage them to go into STEM fields. Working alongside over 26 community partners, the So SMAART Program is able to provide meaningful, non-traditional career awareness, education, workshop learning, and hands-on experiences to young girls across Dallas.
These public servants represent more than their critical work for their constituents. They are a clear example of how far Dallas and its surrounding communities have come in sending proper representation to our most important offices. There was an unfortunate time in Dallas history where a photo of this many women, let alone African American women, serving in critical public roles would be unthinkable. Today, Dallas County has more African American female judges than any county in the nation. Having representation in our courtrooms, in Congress, at City Hall, in our local school boards, community college boards, the office of district clerk, and in the Texas Legislature has allowed for once forgotten voices to have a significant seat at the table of decision-making. These women have overcome the burden of making history. They are not just in the room. They are making a difference.

HALL: Geniuses, Morons and C Levels!
Andrew Hacker is an American political scientist and public intellectual. He currently serves as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science at Queens College in New York. Born in 1929, you may never have heard of Hacker, but he’s been around for a while. I stumbled upon him as I was trying to make sense of racial politicking during the 1992 presidential elections. His book is one of my favorites and even its name is provocative. Hacker who is as much a statistical genius as he is political scientist wrote a book called; Two Nations: Black and White; Separate, Hostile and Unequal. I knew right away that this is one reference point I would keep near me forever. That rendering has given me lots and lots of foundational understanding of race, money, and politics in America. One truth he gave me, that I shall forever hold onto was rather simple, but goes undetected by so many. I recall the golden nugget as if it was yesterday…it appeared on page 27, paragraph three, around the middle. “So in terms of potential capacities, Hacker said, our best knowledge is that all races have a comparable range of geniuses and morons and people of average ability.” I had to call on this fact as I witnessed Tony Pettway at a Donald Trump tribal cabal in Phoenix. I hadn’t predicted this, I felt like a moron. Strangely enough, I watched this clip while attending a Jack and Jill Beautillion. This video caught me in the throes and basking in the glow of blossoming Black manhood. It

was a “Rites of passage” for 32 young Brothers. My smartphone projected a dumbass; a Black enlistee who went to war for Citizen Donald Trump. I struggled and struggled with it. I could not make sense of it. I would not allow myself to believe what my eyes were seeing. After all, I am a seer and sophist of the highest order. Nowhere on my radar was there the slightest probability that a Black protagonist would sucker punch and swarm a White protester at a Donald Trump rally.
5
Did you ever imagine or predict that one of “The Blacks” would defend Donald Trump while his victim, a White progressive, was defending that same Black and virtually all other non-whites? Naw, you didn’t either! It didn’t take much for me to set horses with the idea of a 78-year-old White Southerner blindsiding a young Black man in North Carolina. But accepting the fact that Tony the “Tiger” was a passionate and voluntary defender of Donald Trump is almost like trying to explain any respectful Jew defending the words and warped theology of Hitler. It just don’t make no sense. None!! That’s when I had to go back to Andrew Hacker. Every race has its share of geniuses, dunces and C students. Tony Pettway caught me off guard because I let my heart trump my mind. Sooner or later, a Black Trump fanatic had to break onto the scene, whether he was paid to do so or not. Let’s see if Trump pays his legal fees. So I had to go back to the book. Perhaps there was something I missed. Lo and behold there was. On the very last paragraph of the book, page 219, I found Hacker’s final prophecy in this pericope. Hacker concluded this way; “A huge racial chasm remains, and there are a few signs that the coming century will see it closed.” Get it? The race problem is not close to an end, and you can find a moron in any race, creed and gender. Donald and Tony are just two of the more celebrated examples.
CURRY: Sizing up the Latest Republican and Democratic Debates TRUTH TO POWER By George E. Curry

Not even President Obama would argue it was the best of timing. While he was on the first leg of a two-stop trip to mend a 50-year non-relationship with Cuba and a 20-isolation from Argentina, terrorists attacked Brussels. Instead of rushing home, which would serve as propaganda for terrorists, Obama continued his scheduled journey. But instead of being applauded for his resolve, the president was attacked for everything from attending a baseball ball game in Cuba to dancing the tango at State Dinner in Argentina. Andrew Napolitano said on Fox News Channel’s Fox & Friends, “At a time when we have a crisis, is that the impression that he wants to convey? He’s a great
dancer and maybe he didn’t want to change his plans. But I’m not so sure he should be doing that when everybody else is worried about where ISIS is, who they’re going to kill next, and are they going to come over here. Perhaps he should be giving a different impression of strength and preservation of freedom and safety.” Aside from the reality of President Obama having access to the same tools he would have had if he had returned to Washington, he is being held to a different standard. Bernard Goldberg, a former CBS broadcaster, acknowledged, “... too often conservatives on radio and television wouldn’t give Barack Obama credit if he found a cure for cancer. Look, we need honest analysis, and too often what we’re getting is not honest opinion journalism.” That’s the understatement of the year. As was pointed out by this website, “A particularly intolerable meme continues to play out in the news media and online: apparently U.S. history began on January 20, 2009 when Barack Obama was inaugurated. In case you were unaware, President
Obama is evidently the first president to take vacations; he’s the first president to play golf; he’s the first president to be photographed without a suit or tie; and he’s the first president to routinely use a teleprompter. If you believe any of that, then you’re a moron who needs to refresh your memory about all things pre-2009. There you’ll find that not only are Obama’s vacations and so forth in line with most previous presidents, but in terms of overall time off, he’s taken the fewest vacation days of any modern president other than Bill Clinton. “The latest round of outrage directed at the president has to do with his so-called ‘bad optics’ - allegedly inappropriate nonpresidential behavior. In this latest case, Obama’s crazy decision to remain in Cuba for his historic reopening of U.S./Cuban relations following the dual terrorist attacks in Brussels on Tuesday. A cursory check of AM talk radio, Fox News Channel and conservative Twitter reveals the usual double-standard and historical amnesia we’ve seen over and over again.” To refresh their memories:ß EVENT, October 10, 1981 -- The funeral of assassinated Egyptian
President Anwar Sadat. REAGAN OPTICS, October 10, 1981 -- Reagan went horseback riding at Camp David. EVENT, August 29, 1983 -Two Marines were killed and 14 wounded in Beirut. REAGAN OPTICS, August 29, 1983 -- Reagan remained on vacation at Rancho Del Cielo, California. EVENT, September 1, 1983 -Reagan was still on vacation in California when the Soviets shot down Korean Airlines Flight 007. REAGAN OPTICS, September 1, 1983 -- According to Fox News Channel’s Chris Wallace, as well as contemporaneous accounts, Reagan planned to remain on vacation until he was photographed horseback riding and was convinced to return to the White House. EVENT, October 22, 1983 -- The administration began planning its military incursion into Grenada. REAGAN OPTICS, October 22, 1983 -- Reagan remained on vacation at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. Repeat: golf resort. EVENT, July 18, 1984 -- 21 people were killed and 19 wounded when a gunman entered a San
Ysidro, California McDonald’s and opened fire. REAGAN OPTICS, July 21, 1984 -- On the day when many of the gun massacre victims were to be buried, Reagan went horseback riding at Camp David. EVENT, April 2, 1986 -- Four Americans were killed in a terrorist attack at a TWA counter at the Athens Airport, Greece. REAGAN OPTICS, April 4, 1986 -- Two days later, here’s Reagan’s uber-presidential optics, while on vacation (!!) at Rancho Del Cielo. EVENT, September 5, 1986 -The Pakistani military stormed the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73. 22 people were killed, including two Americans, and 150 were injured. REAGAN OPTICS, September 6, 1986 -- Again, while on vacation at his California ranch, Reagan went horseback riding with the First Lady and was photographed with a “Just Say No” sign. On top of that, conservatives had the temerity to criticize First Lady Michelle Obama’s decision to showcase her well-sculptured shoulders early in the Obama presidency. Yet Donald Trump’s wife can expose more intimate body parts on the cover of magazines and expect to receive a pass.

Stop Worrying; Easier Said Than Done Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington When life gets to be overwhelming, and it will, it is almost impossible not to worry. And just like the bible there are any number of verses that speak particularly to that circumstance that is keeping you up at night. Well I’m at that point now and couldn’t think of anything better than something I wrote some time ago. One of the hardest things for me to accept is the fact that worry is not supposed to have any place in God’s kingdom of believers. People have tried to tell me that not only is worry unchristian, but on some levels, it’s actually a sin. Even though I know better at times, I
still cannot help but worry about things which I literally have no control over. Whether it’s family, or friends, or health or finances, my tendency is to worry, as if worrying alone will somehow change the circumstances or perhaps improve the situation. Because this is a learning process, I’m doing my best to be a good student. Scripture tells all of us “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”Matthew 6:27. For me this can be tough. As a wannabe good student, I have to first internalize that the answer to worry has already been shown to me. I need to focus on this because life constantly gives you pop quizzes to test your belief in this truth. Rather than worry, we should rely on the truth of Jesus Christ. That simple truth is these issues, my issues, your issues have already been dealt with via Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.
As such I should be free not to fret. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all things will be given you as well.” Matthew 6:33. Now the next line, I believe says it all. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Again as a student, I can relate to the problem and intellectually understand the answer. But while this is understood on that level, life’s pop quizzes still cause me undue and unnecessary anxiety. Our text teaches us to accept through faith that worry is useless. Our teacher lets us know He is the answer and I understand that. I sometimes forget to I take Him with me at test time. But through study I can recall the right answers when life wants to throw those inevitable quizzes. “Do not be anxious about anything. But by everything, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6. If I can just remember to do this and then let go, I’ll know that I know that I know. It will become habit forming and that’s a habit we should all try and develop. You see I know I’m a hands on kind of student. Don’t tell me show me. By virtue of this biblical demonstration, reinforced by repetition, I think I’m getting it. Quit trying to figure my way out of things on my own. That is life’s recipe for failure. Let God factor into all of my decision making and follow what is then revealed. I call this ‘sanctified decision making.’ Sounds like a bit much but it works for me. In short, what I’m saying is stop, think and pray. Hand it over and let it go. May God bless and keep you always.
James

Zemill delivers heavenly PoJazz experience
By Eva D. Coleman It’s Poetry. It’s Jazz. Combined they bring forth pure artistry. It’s E. Arabis Zemill. He’s become a regularly featured performer at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL). Most recently, he was the headliner during Season 39‘s Poets N Jazz #4 event, featuring an opening performance by Javon Rustin. Having stepped up to many microphones at various venues, Zemill has indulged many in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and beyond with his delivery, which is sometimes erotic, yet always pleasing and definitely up-lifting. Yes. He moves the crowd. Zemill’s style is interactive and requires crowd participation.
Some get carried away like the woman, during this particular show, who decided to gyrate in front of the crowd, directly in front of the Clarence Muse Cafe Theater stage. Zemill had incited the audience to “get down” after he instructed his accompanists to play a familiar tune. This woman held nothing back...and neither did the artist. For Zemill, this show was a little different. While those in attendance swayed, oohed and awed, hanging onto his every word, the day before, Zemill had received word that a dear friend by the name of Sandra Underwood had passed away. Earlier in the week, he had received a word from Sandra. “On Sunday, Sandra called to talk to me about a dream she had,” Zemill recalled. “She said people were getting on a bus and coming to the show, and for some reason, she couldn’t get on the bus.” Zemill shared how Sandra was a big supporter. He even said she had left him a voicemail message the following day about getting her ticket. Sandra died unexpectedly on Thursday from what Zemill was told were stomach complications. Friday night, Zemill was on fire. The recent premonition he received did not faze his performance. Sandra may have missed the bus in her dream, however, perhaps she was a driving force behind the intensity of his message. Words are powerful. When breath is gone, it doesn’t necessarily mean words are lost. As an humble and graceful poet, Zemill’s shows are continuously growing in popularity. He sells out theaters of people wanting to hear his words. His Timeless CD, books, shirts and memorabilia are reminders of his poetic existence. Attention Required is the name of the parent company under which Zemill markets his brands. Sandra Underwood definitely got his attention. Zemill is a voice of entertainment, reality, life’s struggles and the precious gift of love and life. While others hold onto his vocal prowess, he hangs onto Sandra’s voicemail about the ticket she was about to purchase. Perhaps her ticket took her to Heaven. Someone else paid the price. May she rest in peace. Long live The PoJazz Experience.

Reel-ality TV Talk
5 Top Reasons Drama in the Real housewives World is Getting Crazier? 1- It’s Reunion time for the Real Housewives of Atlanta and the truth on several levels finally comes out! Truth Fact #1 - Why can’t Phaedra seem to get along with Kandi? Phaedra is mad and irked that her husband (soon to be ex) being locked up for eight years. She needs someone to be equally angry. She’s miserable watching the happy Kandi, that includes, a happy marriage (finally), new baby, peace on the mom front (Mama Joyce is acting right these days); on top of that Kandi is looking fierce. You’ve heard the phrase, “Hurt People Hurt”and this seems to apply to the people closest to them. Of course Phaedra is too proud to ever admit it but she knows this situation will get easier but it will take a lot of healing. In the meantime, she needs to get her aggression out and Porsha is her BFF these days, Cynthia is having her own troubles, and Phaedra already gloated over that at the beginning of the season. That leaves Kenya, from experience she knows not to go after Kenya without expecting a war. Newbie Kim, is just too nice and that would make Phaedra look bad. So that leaves, Kandi a plus in Phaedra’s mind; she deserves it since her husband is friends with Todd. So, its reunion time and Phaedra is sharing her “why” for spreading major Todd and Kandi hate. As always, Kandi responds speaking emotionally with little jabs but you can tell she’s holding back. According to her blog, she does not want to blow Phaedra out of the water by sharing the real deal. So frustrating to viewers! If you’re going to be on a reality show, speak the truth because it will come out eventually. 2- Kim is finally becoming a Real Housewife, but is it too late? Truth Fact #2 - Kim never felt comfortable being on the housewives stage but is smart enough to know that it makes her relevant. We saw the Hollywood legend with a non-Hollywood life; this is surprising considering how elaborate you can live in Atlanta in comparison with N.Y. and L.A. Anyway, she was very simple and pretty much took care of her children all day. During major Atlanta trips the other housewives bought along nannies and family members to care for their kids but Kim, did it herself. On one hand you couldn’t help but admire her hands on commitment. As a viewer, it was annoying, we wanted to see the Kim the total person and not just the mom. That being said, Kim defined classy and handled Kenya like no other. Kenya’s goal is to upset you so much that you lose yourself and become a fighting fool. Kim never took the bait. When she came close, she just left the room. Eventually, Kenya just looked like a bully. This back and forth only continued at the reunion! It got to the point where Kim, told Kenya to shut up and stop talking over people. Even the famous host, Andy Cohen, lost patience with Kenya. It was interesting to watch. The question is: Will Kim’s classy manner and non-confrontational style allow her to stay in the RHOA world? According to the gossip sites, she’s leaving. Some say it was her choice, some say she was fired. I just think she’s smart. She got what she needed - to again become relevant and open up new opportunities - in record time. Heck, I watched her on “Dancing with the Stars” and she was in her glory. She loves being around normal people. She can also celebrate the fact, she was cast on the show after appearing on RHOA for a season; for others, it takes years!
www. T E X A S M E T R O N E W S . CO M By Marquesa LaDawn
You go girl. PS: I think Kim’s presence woke up the sleeping giant Nene, and made her realize, that if she wants to remain the queen bee of RHOA, she’d better bring it! Looks like she plans too, according to reports, she’s getting the biggest paycheck in housewives history for the upcoming seasons! 3- Porsha gets the heat, no matter what! Truth Fact #3 - She will never be a stepford wife again. Her first season was all about pleasing her man and showing the world how happy she was as a married lady. She was hoping to get pregnant and become famous! Little did she know, she had an entirely different future. The marriage blew to pieces, and so did her dream of being a mother right now. She did try to replace him and that blew up in her face within a few months. All of this drama in her life is clearly impacting her.She seems to get in a lot of physical fights post divorce. Any one would be angry with this reality, I just hope she finds another way to express it. She’s finally carved out a nice place for herself on RHOA and getting too physical could end that according to the blogs. I was surprised to see her a bit dressed conservatively on the reunion. Her hair was simple, I hope she’s ok, because we’ve come to know and love, the wild and out there Porsha! 4- There’s drama over in Beverly Hills, too! Lisa Rinna is on fire, I like how real she’s become. I’ll admit at times, too real. She seems to share every single thought that’s in her head - she needs an edit button. She seems to lack empathy for Yolanda Foster and her illness.I will say this, Yolanda is not being authentic during this season, because she’s trying to hide the tension in her marriage - not all of it is about illness. I have to say Rinna called it! I heard Yolanda is still very sensitive during the reunion and cannot talk about the demise. On a lighter note, I love the Dubai trip, I now want to go! The ladies arriving in Dubai reminded me of when the ladies of Sex and the City (#2 movie) visited. It was magical. I’m also enjoying Erica, one of the newest cast members, I think giving some time, her real deal will be exposed. I love that this is one season where the other ladies are not falling in line with everything Lisa Vanderpump says. Yes, she was criticized a lot last season but Vanderpump ran and never addressed it until the reunion. She knows that will not work this time around, so it’s interesting seeing her being put in her place, so to speak! 5- The Real Housewives of Potomac, I’m finally liking it sort of... The ladies are a bit too petty for my tastes, but I love how the young chicks are standing up for themselves and not allowing the crazy, older, bitter ladies run the show. The one that looks a bit like Tina Knowles, Karen Huger, is a drama queen. If it’s not her way, she’s pissed for days! Her husband may let her control everything but not the other ladies. Ashley, a newlywed and one of the younger cast members cannot do anything right in some of the other ladies eyes. For example, her husband arrived at the girlfriends’ weekend out of the blue and all hell broke loose. It did not matter that it was his house, or that he arrived the night before they planned to depart. Not only did they go left on Ashley, they expected her to throw her husband out, really? Now, drama lady, Gizelle is full of surprises. Initially I liked her and thought others over reacted in response to her, but my mind has changed. She’s so mean to be so pretty! I will say it’s getting better and the new cast is growing on me with every episode.

ASK ALMA: Ain’t got time for this
Ok, I was with a police officer for 10 years. He did some awful things in our relationship. Meaning he cheated on me. A lot of it was through the Internet or through the phone. Meaning he was sexting many other women. Which he considered not cheating. We were living together and I was battling lupus. He said it was because I was sick often and didn’t like to do the things I used to do. Long story short, I found a side phone with over 30 different women in the phone. I was devastated! Here I am battling lupus and he can’t be loyal. I was heartbroken, so I kicked him out and our relationship over. He has tried to be my friend ever since, but I’m so angry that he hurt me. He’s apologized and begged me to forgive him. He wants to be friends and be a part of my life. What’s your take on this?

14 MARCH 30, 2016 www. T E X A S M E T R O N E W S . CO M State Fair of Texas announces 2016 Theme Do you or a loved one STRUGGLE on the stairs? The countdown to fun has officially begun – only 200 days until the State Fair of Texas® begins its annual 24-day run. This year the State Fair of Texas celebrates 130 years of history with the city of Dallas and the great Lone Star State. Originally established as a livestock exposition back in 1886, it is without question that the Fair has deep roots in agriculture. In honor of its history, the Fair constantly strives to promote agricultural education and aims to further support this initiative through its 2016 event, themed “Celebrating Texas Agriculture.” This year’s exposition will run Friday, September 30 through Sunday, October 23 at historic Fair Park in Dallas. A combination of entertainment, art, agriculture, history and cuisine, the Fair provides guests with a unique way to experience every aspect of Texas culture, all in one place. “Every year we host millions of visitors, with the ultimate goal of bringing people together for a quality event that is unique to our great state,”
says Mitchell Glieber, State Fair of Texas president. “Although agriculture plays a key role in our daily lives, it is not something we often stop and think about – especially those of us living in urban areas like Dallas,” explains Glieber. “With fairgoers coming from both urban and rural backgrounds, we strive to promote agriculture to all visitors through our educational opportunities that are as enjoyable as they are informative.” Acknowledging the significance of farming and ranching in Texas’ past, present and future, the Fair continues to promote agricultural growth through its large number of learning initiatives.

- I’ve been on Medicaid for several months and drawing SSI from Social Security Administra-tion (SSA). I’ll be turning age 62 next month, I was informed by SSA that my SSI would go away because I’ll start drawing a Social Security Retirement check. Since my retirement income will be significantly greater than the SSI I’ll no longer be eligible for Medicaid assistance. I’m concerned about keeping some medical assistance so my question is will I get Medicare too when I
