2  WEEK OF MAY 4, 2016 www. T E X A S M E T R O N E W S . CO M Celebrating Asian-Pacific Americans From the Capitol Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

During the month of May our nation celebrates Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. Asian and Pacific Islander Americans’ heritage is an essential part of the American fabric. They are involved in nearly every aspect of the cultural, political, and social life of our nation. Their rich traditions and entrepreneurial spirt have enriched our nation greatly. The acknowledgement of Asian and Pacific Islanders first began during the administration of former President Jimmy Carter who signed a resolution in 1978, acknowledging the contributions made by our fellow Americans. Throughout the country men, women and children of Asian Pacific Islander descent will hold conferences, festivals, worship services and reunions to rekindle memories of their childhoods, and share concerns, ideas and visions about their futures, and that of their children. While a member of Congress, I worked closely with my colleagues that represented districts where there was a strong Asian and Pacific Islanders presence. My Congressional district included large numbers of Asian Americans so I also embraced and became active in the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. The organization’s principal concerns were issues that affected Americans of Asian and Pacific

Island ancestry. It was born shortly after a meeting that I convened of Asian members in the House. The organization had legislative and social concerns, and attempted to educate members of Congress about the contributions that Asians and Pacific Islanders made to American life and culture. We worked on issues that affected the economic life of the people we were sworn to serve. Over the years I have worked closely with members of my congressional district whose origins are in Asia and the Pacific Islands. I have found them to be some of the most honest and hardworking people I have ever met. I have traveled to Asia to survey political conditions, and to participate in conferences such as “A World of Women for World Peace,” an annual event that I began 16-years ago to begin peace dialogues for women and their allies. I have found that the vast majority of people have similar objectives, feeding their families, educating their children and preparing for a sustainable retirement. As members of the human family, all of us have a responsibility to be concerned with one another. We also have a responsibility to share in the cultures of one another. It is a great way to enrich our souls, and the minds of our children. I wish the very best of life to all of those whose heritages we celebrate during the month of May. I also express my gratitude for all that they have contributed to this country, and for all that they shall contribute in the future.

AUSTIN – “Click It or Ticket.” It’s simple, it’s the law and it’s a reminder from the Texas Department of Transportation that seat belts save lives. “With Memorial Day weekend and the summer vacation season approaching, we’re urging people to buckle their seat belts every time they get in their vehicle,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. “Every person in a vehicle – front seat or back seat – needs to buckle up. Not only is it the law, but seat belts save lives.” Last year in Texas, 2,370 vehicle crashes involving unrestrained occupants resulted in 889 fatalities and 1,854 serious injuries. Wearing a seat belt helps keep occupants from being ejected in a crash and increases the chances of surviving by 45 percent. In pickup trucks, that number jumps to 60 percent, as those vehicles are twice as likely as cars to roll over in a crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that since its inception, the “Click It or Ticket” campaign in Texas has resulted in 4,687 fewer traffic fatalities while preventing 79,578 serious injuries. When the “Click It or Ticket” campaign launched in 2002, only 76 percent of Texans used their seat belts. Today, 9 out of 10 Texans buckle up. Along with TxDOT’s annual, statewide “Click It or Ticket” campaign and awareness tour, police departments across the nation will step up enforcement efforts from May 23 – June 5. In Texas, the law requires everyone in a vehicle to buckle up or face fines and court costs up to $200. Children younger than 8 years old must be in a child safety seat or booster seat unless they’re taller than 4 feet 9 inches. To learn more about “Click It or Ticket,” visit texasclickitorticket.com.

The Essence Music Festival was marking its 20th anniversary. The headliner of the annual celebration of African-American music and culture was none other than Prince. I had the privilege of seeing Prince in concert that hot summer Louisiana night - or should I say, I was lucky enough to experience the tour de force and phenomenon, whose sudden and untimely death we mourn today. “Baldo came to the United States from MichoacĂĄn, Mexico, in 1988, when he was 17 years old. He lives in Pasadena, California, with his wife and their two U.S. citizen daughters, ages nine and 13. While in the United States, he trained as an electrician and, for nearly 20 years, worked for the same company installing electrical wiring and residential security systems. He lost his job in March 2014 when his employer discovered that Baldo was undocumented. Baldo’s employer told Baldo that he hated to lose him and that he would like to rehire him as soon as Baldo obtained work authorization. Baldo’s current work as an independent contractor has created financial difficulties for him and his family, as he can no longer rely on a weekly paycheck and cannot count on getting work every week. The lack of a reliable income makes it difficult for Baldo to plan for his family’s financial future.â€?

CREDO OF THE BLACK PRESS The Black Press believes that America can best lead the world away from racial and national antagonisms when it accords to every person, regardless of race, color or creed, full human and legal rights. globe; an outsider who defied the profit structure and control of the very industry that propelled him to international megastardom; and an advocate who seamlessly connected his music to the fight for racial justice, including reminding a Grammy audience that, “Albums still matter. Like books and Black lives, albums still matter - tonight and always. There was more to Prince than pop masterpieces, provocative lyrics and purple rain. I could employ every word in the dictionary to describe the man, but it would prove easier, and perhaps truer, to say that nothing compared to Prince. And nothing ever will. The son of a bandleader and a singer, Prince Rogers Nelson was a musical prodigy. He began playing piano and writing music while he was in elementary school. He was signed to a local Minneapolis band while other teenagers were stressing over high school prom dates. The world was formally introduced to the budding musical genius signed to Warner Brothers Records with the R&B infected, falsetto pop standard “I Wanna Be Your Lover. At the tender age of 21, Warner Bros. granted their then-new artist, Prince, unprecedented autonomy and creative control over his debut album. It would be a freedom he would not enjoy for long. In the 90s, Prince engaged in a very public war with Warner Bros. over control of his music and his name - going to the extreme of scrawling the word “slave on his cheek and referring to himself as “the Artist Formerly Known as Prince, or an unpronounceable glyph until he was freed from his contract. Prince would go on to sign with Tidal, the music streaming service part-owned by Jay Z. In a 1996 interview with Rolling

EDITORIAL

Stone, Prince explained, “People think I’m a crazy fool for writing ‘slave’ on my face. But if I can’t do what I want to do, what am I? When you stop a man from dreaming, he becomes a slave. That’s where I was. I don’t own Prince’s music. If you don’t own your masters, your master owns you. Prince’s fight for control over his material was not about Prince. Like everything Prince has ever done, it was about a greater cause and a greater good that touched the lives of hundreds, thousands or millions. He would also use his fame and his famous voice to become an outspoken critic of racial injustice in our country. After protests over the death of a Black man at the hands of police officers in Baltimore, Prince penned a tribute to Freddie Gray that included the line, “Does anybody hear us pray for Michael Brown or Freddie Gray? As revealed by Al Sharpton, Prince also sent money to the family of Trayvon Martin after the teen’s shooting death. Van Jones recalled that Prince would only play the 2014 Essence Music Festival if the organizers agreed to host a hackathon of YesWeCode, Jones’ non-profit that encourages urban youth, particularly young Black men and women, to learn how to write code. Prince was as much an advocate as he was an artist. We are saddened at the loss of this musical giant, a man who refused to be defined or confined in any area of his life, this risktaker, prodigy and genius. But we have his musical legacy to console us, because as Prince reminds us in “1999: “Life is just a party and parties weren’t meant to last. May he rest in purple peace.

-Brief filed by immigrants’ rights, civil rights and labor groups in U.S. v. Texas The future of Baldo and his family and millions of other immigrant families are on hold until the U.S. Supreme Court makes a decision in U.S. v. Texas, which expected in June. Texas and 25 other states filed a lawsuit in February 2015 to block President Obama’s November 2014 executive action to help

keep immigrant families together. The Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiatives would help parents and young adults remain in the U.S. temporarily to work, further their education, and support their families. Baldo’s story is documented in one of the 19 friend-of-the-court briefs filed on behalf of more than 1,000 organizations and individuals supporting the president’s executive actions. DAPA would allow immigrant parents like Baldo with citizen children to seek protection from deportation, get a work permit, and keep their families together. The brief shares more about his story: “Baldo’s financial difficulties are compounded by his fear of being forced to return to MichoacĂĄn, where he has not lived in nearly 30 years. He has heard from family members about kidnappings and other drug cartel-related violence, and would not feel safe returning to MichoacĂĄn. Given the risk of harm, he would not want to take his daughters there, but he also would not want to be separated from them.â€? An estimated 16 million people in the United States have mixed-status families like Baldo’s. One in five undocumented immigrant adults has a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident spouse and about 3.8 million undocumented immigrants have children who are U.S. citizens. By expanding DACA, the Department of Homeland Security would offer deferred action to more young people brought to the United States as children before their 16th birthday. They must have continuously lived in the U.S. since January 2010 and every day since August 15, 2012, have a high school diploma or equivalent, or be in school. They would have access to important educational opportunities, internships and career and vocation training and have better chances of new jobs and increased earnings. The state of Texas’ injunction prevents an estimated 290,000 people brought to the country as children from applying for

DACA. The friend-of-the-court brief of educators and children’s advocates which CDF joined cites two young women who benefited from the initial DACA initiative. Tonya had dropped out of high school in Arizona, discouraged after her parents returned to Mexico, but DACA gave her an incentive to complete her GED and enroll in a medical assistance training program. With DACA support and the needed identification, college student Jessica was able to volunteer at a hospital, apply for an internship at a medical school, and take the MCAT, hoping to move on to her dream of medical school. With expanded DACA in place more young people like these will be able to pursue education and jobs. Qualifying for these temporary, renewable deportation deferrals requires people to meet a variety of requirements and pass a criminal background check. In recognition of the benefits for children and families and the economic future of our country, there is very broad support for DAPA and expanded DACA. Sixteen states and the District of Columbia; 116 cities and counties (including Brownsville and Austin, Texas, New Orleans, LA, Knoxville, Atlanta, Birmingham, Los Angeles, and New York City), along with the National League of Cities and the U.S. Conference of Mayors; 51 current and former chiefs of police and sheriffs and the Major Cities Chiefs Association and Police Executive Research Forum; 326 immigrants’ rights, civil rights, labor, and social service organizations; a bipartisan group of former members of Congress; 225 current U.S. senators and representatives; and former federal immigration and Homeland Security officials have filed friend-of-the-court briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court. I hope the U.S. Supreme Court will seize this opportunity to move our nation forward, prevent family break up, end the stressful hardships countless families face, and give hope and stability to millions of families, children, and young adults who would benefit from the president’s executive actions.

HALL: The Devil You Know!!

There is nothing like the naked, unfiltered, unwavering, unflappable and unrelenting truth. You know it when you hear it, and when you hear it you know it. It’s like music to your ears. It’s like that earnest sound that rises from the Hammond B-3 organ on Sunday at a Black Baptist Church. The truth of that organ resonates and reverberates. I’ve been disconcerted with the endless half-truths of Republican presidential candidate, Ted Cruz. His thespian-like theatrics had most of us waylaid for a while. We were waylaid until we finally heard a voice of truth. Or at least one voice of truth as it pertains to this shameless scoundrel. After hearing the truth and allowing it to congeal, we fully recognize “HaTed Cruz.” Cruz is a reckless, reprehensible reprobate who schemed his way to become a U.S. Senator during the Tea Party revolt. First, I have to give big ups to Donald J. Trump, because his description of Cruz laid the way for the full revelation. When trash talkin’ Trump turned on Cruz and tarnished him with the tag; “Lyin’ Ted”, he set the stage. However, a real politician for whom I have more than a smidgen of respect, picked up where Trump left off. When queried for his opinion on “Lyin’ Ted”, former Speaker of the House and

town crier John Boehner didn’t mince words. “Lucifer in the flesh,” Boehner told an audience at Stanford University. I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.” There it was. His words were like the harmonic honesty of the Hammond B-3 or an improvised jazz riff. Boehner put the melody to measure. His remarks identified the pitch that most of us thought we heard all along. The former Speaker’s frank assessment of Cruz found favor with political pros and novices alike. He called Ted Lucifer; that nemesis and ne’er-do-well you’ve been preached to about ever since your first days in Sunday school. He said that Ted Cruz was the Devil, Beelzebub, The Prince of Darkness, Mephistopheles, Satan, the Archfiend, Diabulus, the Antichrist and any other dastardly synonym you can dig up from the

pits of hell. Donald dubbing him “Lyin Ted” just scratched Cruz’s thinly veiled surface, but Boehner’s drubbing of him as the spawn of Lucifer captured Ted’s essence in mind, mannerism, speech and spirit. Boehner’s laser attack went viral. Turns out Ted Cruz is hated so roundly that even the true worshippers of Satan renounced his brand of evil. “’Having a conservative Christian likened to Lucifer — one who opposes equal rights for same sex couples and promotes the ability to deny services to any with different values — we Satanists see as besmirching the positive,” the high priest of The Church of Satan, said in a statement.” The Satanists went on to say that Ted Cruz was “everything opposite to what they represent.” Well…Sugar Honey Ice Tea!! Even the purists who claim Satan won’t claim that evil spirit that Ted emits and effuses. Satanists see past that “Jesus freak” persona he perpetrates. For me, Ted Cruz is a far greater threat than Donald Trump. He is megalomaniacal

5

and diabolical. I pray for the Donald because America’s history suggests that anyone as corrosive to our established economic and political systems as he is could become a target. And the way the Secret Service has been functioning under President Obama that could get him hurt. John Boehner scored the music to Ted Cruz’s traveling vaudeville act better than anyone would have ever imagined. I love

John Boehner and Ted Cruz the church organ, but the organ beating in Ted Cruz’s chest cavity moves to a wicked beat. Ted Cruz probably is the devil and now you know it!!

Stop Whining -- Start Grinding Blackonomics By James Clingman via George Curry Media

It’s interesting how the young folks have started using a term that describes what the older folks should be doing. I hear young people saying, “I’m grinding,” and I hear older folks whining. Young people know they have to “just do it,” as the saying goes, in order to achieve their dreams. In many cases, they are willing to take risks and forego the creature comforts that could accrue to them via high level corporate salaries. They are willing to sacrifice in order to pursue their own path in life, unconstrained by the “rules” someone else sets for them. We older folks are not as willing to do the work appertaining to progress; instead we are still relying on politicians to make things better for us. We do a lot more whining than grinding when it comes to our collective - and sometimes even our individual economic freedom. I hear it on the radio and on news shows all the time from so-called leaders and from so-called liberated Black folks. They whine about what the “Man” is

doing to us, how our collective fate is not in our own hands but someone else’s, what “we need to do,” how “unequal” we are in income, wealth, and social opportunities, and how many of us are in prison. They can recite all the stats and all the history surrounding our current demise. They reminisce about Kemet and other ancient African contributions to the world. They talk about “Black Wall Street” and invoke the names of our great icons; and they continue to lament and chronicle, as Maulana Karenga says, “Litanies of lost battles.” While many of us are very adept at talking about our problems, far fewer of us are willing to get into the fray and do the work to ameliorate our problems - even though the solutions to our problems are relatively simple to implement. Co-convener of the One million Conscious Black Voters and Contributors, Amefika Geuka, wrote a “Black Paper” in 2007 in which he stated, “[Our] vision is of a transformed Black community where our people radically improve the quality of their lives and surroundings. We will accomplish this by implementing programs and ventures designed specifically for the unique needs of people of African descent - without apology! This will result in the complete elimination of the ‘slave mentality’ and dependence on the gratuity of others that it promotes. We will cease to be the ‘weakest link in the chain,’ or weakest ‘patch’ in the ‘quilt-like’ fabric of American

society and that of the world.” Rhetoric not followed by action is meaningless; and whining not supplanted by grinding only displays weakness and apathy. Booker T. Washington said, “The world might pity a whining nation, but it will never respect it [until it respects itself enough to do for itself ].” If we would turn our whining into grinding, not worrying as much about the external factors but concentrating on our internal resources with which to “accomplish what we will,” Black people would be much better off. Politically speaking, Black folks are now so engulfed in presidential candidates, thinking once again that our salvation somehow lies within them. Some of our Black political hacks are whining about which candidate will do the most for us, which is kinda like two enslaved people arguing over which plantation and “master” are better. If we continue to seek the largess of a political candidate without having a reasonable assurance that he or she will do more than talk about our situation, we will continue to get the same thing we have always gotten from them: more rhetoric. Stop waiting to hear their patronizing words regarding Black issues; start demanding what we want, and then be prepared to respond with our votes and our dollars. We must negotiate from a position of strength not with idle threats

and saber-rattling, but by withholding our votes and our dollars if they do not support our demands. What do we have to lose? The state of North Carolina is currently being economically punished because of its stand on which bathrooms transgender persons can use. Corporations are withdrawing their dollars and other threats abound by athletic groups and such. Question: Why isn’t the same thing happening on behalf of Black folks when it comes to voter suppression in that state? Have you heard any corporation threaten to leave or boycott Carolina on behalf of Black people? The POTUS even spoke up for the transgender people. Similar to the Indianapolis, Ind. case and the purported discrimination against gay people by businesses, corporations said they would move and the NCAA said it would cancel its events in that city if the law was not reversed. Guess what. The law was changed. We are too busy counting votes to realize that our dollars count for more. Stop whining and start grinding.

Mothers love fuels entrepreneurial spirit

Carrigan & Smith for your legal needs; Spencer is growing south in Southwest Center Mall By CHERYL SMITH Mother’s Day is a special time for mothers around the world when they are saluted, honored and showered with gifts, but for two mothers, Margaret Turner Carrigan and Gloria Spencer, they are treated like royalty every day. Attorney Margaret Turner Carrigan’s relationship with her daughter, Shayla Marshall Smith, is heartwarming and would be surprising to many. They are both attorneys, practicing law together in the same office and they live right next door to one another. And there’s more! They are sorority sisters, members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (No. Dallas Suburban Alumnae Chapter), and they even take trips together. It’s not uncommon to see them at legal conferences or sorority conventions. Research has not uncovered another African American mother/daughter law firm in this state and the two are proud of the work they do at the Carrigan & Smith Law Offices in McKinney, TX., where they specialize in family, SS Disability, child custody, divorce, personal injury, wills and small estates and misdemeanor criminal cases. “I see good people at their worse,” said Ms. Turner Carrigan, in describing her diverse clientele. “We help people put their affairs in order.” And it helps to know that you’re not operating in a hostile environment, she said, adding that trust is a big factor. “When you have a partner like Shayla, it feels good coming to work. “I totally trust her and she totally trusts me and we make it work.” She explained, “Even if we disagree, we have one another’s back.” Now while some mothers are recounting the horrors of their daughter’s teen years or other moments when they longed for a better relationship, both Margaret and Shayla have wonderful stories of their journey. “We’ve always had a loving relationship,” said Ms. Turner Carrigan. “When Shayla was born I rededicated myself to the Lord and asked for help with raising her.” It was an easy job, she continued, pointing out that her daughter was a “good kid” who didn’t get into trouble. “I was honest with her and expected the same,” she added, “I told her ‘break the rules and you get one punishment, but if you lie about it, you get three punishments!’” Fortunately there were no periods of rebellion that strained their relationship. Still young Shayla could never have imagined that she would grow up and enter the same profession as her mom and then also be working in the same office. The married mother of two recalled her desire to become a broadcast journalist, traveling internationally to cover those stories that made careers and won awards. So after high school she was off to one of the country’s premiere journalism schools, the University of Missouri at Columbia. She was on her way. But as usual life happens. She “ended up getting married and having a family.” A job offer in journalism didn’t fit in with the family plan, especially with her husband still in college, so she said she recalled a course she really enjoyed, Media Law.

Next thing you know she was enrolling in law school at her alma mater. Surprisingly she didn’t choose her mother’s, UT Law School, where Turner Carrigan was a classmate of former Ambassador Ron Kirk and former Dallas City Councilwoman Vonciel Jones Hill. After passing the bar, Shayla said she ended up practicing family law by accident and also worked in the Attorney General’s office before partnering with her mother. The partners each have their specialties. Daughter’s

overcome obstacles as an African American woman living in America. She was a flight attendant for American Airlines for 33 years before her retirement following the September 11 tragedy. Her tenacity, faith and support fueled a desire in her son, Larry, to “spread his wings and soar as high as he can go,” she said. Larry is on an ambitious journey and his mom laid the foundation for him to be successful. “My mom is my

forte is in the areas of research, writing and technology while mom’s strengths are in arguing cases and handling the books. Shayla’s friends also have bonded with her mother. “A lot of my good friends are really close to my mom,” she said. “She adopts my friends. She’s a mother-figure to them.” Shayla has nothing but kind words for her mother, “My mom has always been a source of inspiration for me. I look up to her a lot because she’s the only person who has consistently been there for me my entire life.” Mom describes her daughter as “having strong morals, Christian, good mom, intelligent, beautiful...” “Sometimes I fuss, but I try to encourage her because sometimes she underestimates herself,” said Ms. Turner Carrigan. “I tell her the Lord has blessed her and to be thankful for those gifts.” And the first gift Shayla is thankful for is her mother! “My mother is brave, bold and tenacious,” she said. “ She taught me to be a Christian and to keep God first. She is a trailblazer and did a lot of things at a time when it wasn’t easy, especially for an African American woman.”

everything,” he said. “ She paved the way for me to make my own way.” And she helped him at a time when he sunk down to a low point. Larry has a story and a testimony worth sharing. He, like so many other young men, was seduced by the world of violence. There was an unfortunate incident that occurred while he was in high school. “We had guns and one of my friends got ahold of my gun and jammed it. When I picked it up, it went off and shot my friend.” There were so many regrets after that incident, he said, which prompted him to stop drinking, get rid of the guns, stop hanging out and get back in church. The Grand Jury no-bill that kept him out of a trial and possibly jail was a rude awakening for him. Then he had another turning point in his life, the birth of his first child. “I wanted better for my children,” he explained. “I had to pave the way for them just as my mom did for me.” And Ms. Spencer is still there for her only living son. His brother died after battling cancer almost three years ago. She says she is so proud of the work that Larry does today and has been doing for decades. There’s also a commitment to giving back and Larry will be starting fundraising efforts for cancer research and for another relative’s non-profit: MASS - Mother’s (Fathers) for the Advancement of Social Systems; the organization founded by the late Joyce Ann Brown, who spent nine years, five

BRINGING R.E.A.L. HAIR TO SOUTH Gloria Spencer knows what it is to blaze trails and

months and 24 days in prison for a crime she did not commit. A successful, legitimate entrepreneur, Larry is taking a bold stand in the revitalization efforts of Southwest Center Mall. Amid reports that the Mall would be closing after losing several anchor stores and reports of violence, Larry decided that he wanted to invest in its future by bringing a thriving, upscale business to the Mall. Scheduled for a ribbon-cutting and grand opening on Saturday, May 21, 2016, R.E.A.L. Hair, will introduce a salon, hair boutique, makeup and clothing one stop shop for a high-end clientele that seeks quality products, service and atmosphere. With high-quality hair selling at a premium, Larry plans to provide the type of experience that will uplift the entire Mall and be of benefit to other surrounding businesses. Now this is a hefty investment but Gloria is not surprised by her son’s efforts because she, like her son remembers a thriving then-Redbird Mall where anyone Black who came to town wanted to visit. “We need revitalization of this area,” she said. “Others are coming in, making money and draining our community. We need something for our community.” Describing her adventurous son, Ms. Spencer said Larry loves people and he loves giving back, which is just how she feels. “We adhere to morals and principles,” she said. “We’re about helping one another. We’re all about the community.” And there’s an accountability factor that Larry is focused on. A graduate of DeSoto High School, his family’s roots are deeply embedded in the Oak Cliff area. There shouldn’t be a need to travel out of your surroundings to get quality products and services. That’s what Larry was thinking when he decided to open R.E.A.L. Hair in Southwest Center Mall, despite other malls courting him for his business. He says he will have some of the top hair stylists in the Metroplex who already boast an impressive clientele. He says everything in the establishment will be top grade. “I am making a commitment and I am encouraging others to join me,” he said. “I want my mother to have quality places where she can shop close to home. I want it safe, with law enforcement and security. “I want to see people who care about their business and community working in and supporting the businesses in the Mall.” Fortunately Southwest Center is under new management and Dallas Deputy Mayor ProTem Erik Wilson and Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce President Wilton Munnings are sounding the trumpet for building a safer more vibrant southern Dallas County. There’s also a heavier police presence. “That’s why we’re here,” said Mr. Munnings. “The Chamber has a business assistance center with a trained staff to help small businesses.” When Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings talks about GrowSouth efforts, the Spencers echo his thoughts and say they realize the importance of investing. “I’m making a commitment and my mother is making a commitment,” said Larry. “Let’s do this together.”

Black Newspapers Make Few Presidential Endorsements By Erick Johnson The Chicago Crusader via George Curry Media

Forget it Hillary. Sorry Bernie. When the time came for the Florida Courier to endorse either candidate, the edgy Black newspaper dropped a bombshell with a large headline just five days before the crucial primary elections in the sunshine state. 'NONE OF THE ABOVE," the headline read in caps. It was a much different response nearly 1,000 miles away at the historic New York Amsterdam News. The newspaper's endorsement of Hillary Clinton drew numerous praises and racked up nearly 47,000 likes on Facebook as of April 11. It's a testament to the enduring power of the Black Press, particularly, Black newspapers. But in the past decade, their influence have been challenged by other mediums, changing times and attitudes among a new generation of voters. For Clinton, the endorsement was her latest coup d'ĂŠtat to win Black voters in New York, where they helped her seal her Democratic nomination for president. On Tuesday, April 19, she deflated the momentum of her opponent Bernie Sanders, who in the last several weeks, swept the primaries in Wisconsin, Wyoming, Washington and Hawaii. Despite Sanders' momentum, the 107-year old New York Amsterdam News stood behind the former first lady and Secretary of State. In light of escalating racial problems around the nation, many of the nation's major Black newspapers are not endorsing any presidential candidate this election

season, according to a survey by The Chicago Crusader. Many are also not endorsing candidates running for local, state and Congressional offices. Some cite longstanding editorial polices that prohibit endorsements during primary elections. Other Black newspapers are cutting their support to express their disappointment with the political establishment. Out of 26 major Black newspapers surveyed by the Crusader, 19 publications are not endorsing any candidate this year. Only seven have blessed Clinton or any candidate with an endorsement. In addition to the New York Amsterdam News, they include The Jacksonville Advocate, The Michigan Chronicle, and The St. Louis American. All of the papers endorsed Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination. In Chicago, Clinton bagged endorsements from the city's three major Black newspapers, the Crusader, the Defender and the Citizen. The Chicago Crusader sister paper, the Gary Crusader also endorses Clinton as that city prepares to hold their primary May 3. Unlike other newspapers, the Chicago Crusader did not endorse Rahm Emanuel in his reelection campaign in 2014. None of the Black newspapers surveyed endorsed Sanders, a candidate who has been supported by a host of Black celebrities, including Spike Lee, Kanye West, scholar Cornel West and former NAACP President Benjamin Jealous. Among the Black newspapers that are not endorsing any candidates in this year's primaries are The Philadelphia Tribune, New Pittsburg Courier, The Florida Courier, TriState Defender, The Washington Informer, The Atlanta Voice, The Los Angeles Sentinel, The Indianapolis Recorder, The Carolina Peacemaker, The Charlotte Post, The Cleveland Call and Post, The Final Call, The Houston Forward Times, the LA Wave and the Richmond Free Press. With racial and social issues boiling over in the Black community, Black newspapers editors are making tougher decisions about granting political endorsements. Many Black publishers and editors aim to send a message to candidates whose platforms do not offer any sound solutions to longstanding problems in the Black community. One Black newspaper that's not giving out presidential endorsements, The Tri-State Defender, made the evening newscast in Memphis when it decided not to support two opposing Black candidates for mayor last October. One failed to show up for an interview with the newspaper's editorial board while the other candidate did not impress the staff with his platform. The Atlanta Voice said that it does not endorse political candidates, because of their editorial policy. The city's mainstream daily newspaper, the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, ended its practice of giving political endorsements in 2010 after complaints from its readers who didn't want to be told how to vote. On its website, The Charlotte Post explained its decision to hold back on its endorsements. "In a presidential election cycle, local elections are often overlooked. However, the people who earn out votes in the March 15 primary are the people who are the most responsible to local interests," the statement reads. In an unusual twist, rather than endorsing one Democratic presidential candidate, The Richmond Free

Press in Virginia encouraged its readers to vote for either Clinton or Sanders. On March 10, The Florida Courier explained why the newspapers refused to back any political candidate this year. "Too often, we as Black people allow ourselves and our services to be devalued because we have become so used to working with little, and making something out of nothing. No more," the editorial read. "Effective i m m e d i ate l y, we will not c o n s i d e r. . . candidates for endorsements who do not use Black- owned media outlets to seriously solicit votes from Florida's Black communities." This wasn't the first time The Florida Courier withheld its endorsement. The newspaper also made headline when it decided not to endorse the Democratic candidate Charlie Crist or incumbent Florida governor and eventual winner, Republican Rick Scott. The New York Amsterdam News also takes its endorsements seriously. Weeks before making its decision to endorse Clinton, an editorial staff member told a Crusader r e p o r t e r, "We are n o t endorsing Hillary or anyone until they come in and meet with our editorial board." Though many Black newspapers are not making any endorsements, m o s t publications are maintaining their traditional advocacy roles as Black journalists. Many are providing favorable and expanded coverage of Clinton's campaign promises to help Blacks gain more economic opportunities and boost funding to historically Black colleges. Black newspapers are also providing much ink to denounce Republican frontrunner Donald Trump. During Barack Obama's campaign for president against John McCain in 2008, many Black newspapers threw their weight behind him to help become the nation's first Black president. This support also came from some mainstream conservative newspapers, which for the first time in their history, endorsed a Democratic candidate for the White House, including the 169-year old Chicago Tribune. Other conservative mainstream papers that traditionally support Republican candidates, declined to give any endorsements in 2008. In fueling Obama's rise to the White House, Black voter turnout was the highest in U.S. history, surpassing White participation for the first time.

Historically, the Black Press has played a significant role in deciding presidential and political elections. The once mighty Pittsburgh Courier fueled President Franklin D. Roosevelt reelection bids after he made promises to desegregate the military prior to World War II. In Florida in 1984, The Miami Times pushed Black voters to polls to oust then Mayor Maurice Ferre, who fired the city's first and only Black city manager, Howard Gary. That was decades ago. Today, the influence of Black newspapers has been challenged as more Blacks use mainstream newspapers and other sources to examine and choose their political candidates. Despite the competition, endorsements and editorial coverage from Black newspapers are still being sought out. During the campaign for the Illinois primary, Hilary Clinton, along with a handful of Congressional, State and Judicial candidates sought endorsements from Chicago 's Black newspapers. To beef up her exposure, Clinton hired Delmarie Cobb, a Black seasoned public relations guru with strong ties to the city's Black newspapers. As it turned out, Clinton swept Chicago's heavy Black electorate along with a handful of White candidates who received endorsements from the city's Black newspapers.

D/FW MINORITY SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL SUPPLIES POWERFUL CONNECTIONS TO MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN NORTH TEXAS Coming up on May 9 and 10 at the Irving Convention Center, more than 1,200 businesses from the area will participate in the largest regional Business Expo connecting corporations and public sector agencies with certified minority-owned businesses – ACCESS 2016 BUSINESS EXPO. This event is a major contributor to the overall yearly figure in business transactions between Council certified Minority Businesses and corporations. The Dallas/Fort Worth Minority Supplier Development Council (D/FW MSDC) reported $7.1 Billion in Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) revenues in 2015. This year’s ACCESS corporate signature sponsor, Energy Future Holdings (EFH); and Minority Business Enterprise sponsor, TES (Telecom Electric Supply) are a great testimony of how minority certification opens doors to business opportunities by providing powerful connections between large corporations looking for highly competitive suppliers and minority business enterprises with solutions to meet corporate needs. “At Energy Future Holdings, we believe diversity fuels innovation and makes our business communities stronger. With our headquarters in Dallas, we are committed to the health of the North Texas and national economy by fostering relationships and expanding our network of diverse local suppliers,” shared John Young, EFH’s chief executive officer. “The D/FW MSDC plays a significant role in facilitating our connections to certified Minority Business Enterprises in the area. These businesses continue to demonstrate their value by meeting our supply chain needs with innovative, yet cost effective, solutions.” Fred Moses, Founder and President of TES, stated: “The ACCESS Business Expo is one of the most valuable resources the Council offers its MBE’s to market its companies. There is not another avenue or event that offers minority businesses the opportunity to make the business contacts that are available at ACCESS. ACCESS provides in one setting, over 100 buying entity representatives, specifically at ACCESS to meet certified, capable minority owned

11

businesses. The result: Powerful connections for real results.” ACCESS 2016 will host more than 70 confirmed State of Texas agencies recruited by State Senator Royce West. The attending State Agencies will be conducting On-the-Spot Bid Opportunities. Last year, the State Agencies awarded over $2.6 million in contracts at the two-day event. ACCESS 2016 will also feature an Opportunity Board designed to maximize connections; a Business Solutions Pavilion, offering small business solutions and product demonstrations; and more than 40 major corporations seeking diverse suppliers. True to this year’s ACCESS theme of Supplying Powerful Connections, Margo J. Posey, D/FW MSDC President stated: “We are excited about the growing awareness and continued support in the business community of the value of diversity in the supply chain. Buying entities understand that minority owned businesses bring a wealth of talent and solutions to the table, as well as provide a way for them to positively impact the economy in our area.” Posey added: “In 2015, 78 North Texas Cities were impacted by D/FW Minority Business Enterprises. Over 70 local Buying Entity Members, procured /contracted business with D/FW MSDC certified MBEs, resulting in $7.1 Billion in reported revenues and 125,600 employment positions by D/FW MSDC MBEs. Growing these numbers by providing business opportunities and creating powerful connections at the ACCESS Business Expo impacts and grows the entire North Texas community.” The two-day Expo features corporate and MBE roundtables and one-on-one business matchmaking between corporations, public sector entities, and minority business suppliers looking to discuss immediate and near-term opportunities. Last year 203 one-on-one sessions were held by 33 buyers from 15 buying entities. Additionally 528 attendees participated in 121 round table sessions. The Social Media Experience, a Media Lounge with exclusive interviews for the Council’s YouTube Channel and the Cyber Lounge are additional features of ACCESS. “Each year we continue to challenge ourselves to create multiple opportunities for exhibitors, sponsors and attendees to meet, connect, identify opportunities and conduct real business. If you want to participate in the conversation surrounding ACCESS 2016 in real-time, be sure to follow our Twitter @dfwmsdc and use #ACCESS2016DFW ”, said Posey. Registration and sponsorship information is available at the Council’s website at www.dfwmsdc.com or by calling 214-6300747.

Reel-ality TV Talk

You may have been following the Kelly and Michael saga. Yes, Kelly found out that Michael Strahan, her cohost for the past four years, is leaving to work for GMA full time. She found out in the 11th hour and felt blindsided to say the least. What was shocking was her reaction. She left the studio upset and did not return to work the next day. This became a major news story and caused ABC executives to get nervous. In their mind, the networks reputation was getting damaged - they looked like bad guys breaking up a happy home. Now, this is important because ABC battles the other big networks on a daily basis for viewers and this does not help. It’s rumored, they offered Strahan a deal he could not resist but swore him to secrecy. By definition that meant Kelly Ripa was kept in the dark. From Kelly’s perspective, she’s been an employee of ABC for 26 years and a major co-host for “Live.” She deserved to know their plans. Instead, ahe was left wondering if this move meant she was not trusted or that her show had a limited future. This column is not about ABC or Kelly’s response. It’s about Michael’s decision. I’ve watched many of the entertainment shows and talk shows since this story hit the airwaves to see their reaction. Andy Cohen, host of “Watch What Happens Live,” and Wendy Williams, host of her own show, both mentioned Strahan’s decision to leave was not smart. Now, he’s one of two hosts and his name is part of the show’s title. But he’s moving to GMA, which has countless hosts. A contributor from CNN appeared on Access Hollywood to explain

that ABC must have offered Strahan the world. They are focused on preparing for the future and know George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts will not always be there. They’ve noticed how popular Strahan has become and they want to leverage that opportunity. Now, I thought about this and I think Strahan made a great move and took a smart risk. Yep, he Strahan could remain as co-host of “Live...” and take home a great paycheck for years to come or he could shake things up and become a true star. Let me break this down for you...“Live...” is a great show but it’s predictable, vanilla and at some point will become forgettable. As the co-host, Strahan is limited to a short scripted conversation at the top of the show followed by celebrity interviews. A few times a year, he gets a chance to let his hair down, but most of the time, everything is scripted and simple. Plus, he shares the show with another person. I think of Regis Philbin and his long career as a cohost of “Live..” and Kathie Lee, are they household names? No. Did they ever do anything really unique or big as talk show hosts? No. Regis is now retired and makes guest appearances on other shows from time to time; Kathie Lee is a cohost of another show and that’s about all. Let’s go back to Andy Cohen and Wendy Williams. Of course they see “Live...” as a cushy job; they both began their careers interviewing celebrities. They both eventually, created their own brand, but they still interview celebrities. My point is that Strahan, at least in my head, wants something bigger. He’s extremely relevant

right now and has a chance to capitalize on that position in the marketplace. This is his chance to create a career that he owns that leads to all types of opportunities. Movies, sitcoms, his own show, whatever he wants. He could become the Oprah of his time. But, this comes with risk. Even so, if he negotiated a great deal with ABC, he’s protected. I’m sure he’s going nuts right now, and wondering if he made the right decision. Michael, trust your gut and your journey. Do not get distracted by the attention or the scandal. Instead, stay headstrong and focused on the career you want. You may be destined for life that’s bigger than a talk show, bigger than interviewing others. Whatever it is, go for it and enjoy the journey. Two people who took major risks and it paid off come to mind. Oprah Winfrey could have retired and just enjoyed the fruit of her labor after her successful talk show ended. Instead, she reinvented herself into a media mogul Although

Dear Alma, I’m a 60-year-old man, married to the same woman for 33 years. I recently reconnected with my high school girlfriend on Facebook. It now turns out that she will soon be visiting in my area, and we are planning to meet at a restaurant we used to go to when we were teenagers. It will be in a public place, and the owners know my wife (who won’t be there). This is not a real “date,” but it’s more than a business lunch or meal with casual friends. My ex-girlfriend is not married, and I’m not likely to leave my wife. My longterm objective is friendship. Obviously, this reunion calls for more than a hearty handshake, but how much more? A hug seems inevitable. But what kind of kiss? A Hollywood-style air kiss? A peck on the cheek? A quick kiss on the lips? Or something longer? I assume we’ll figure it out, but how do I start? Signed, can’t wait

she experienced a lot of bumps in the road, look at her now. A second example is our dearly departed Prince, wow. On the day he passed, we saw an outpouring of what Prince meant to folks all over social media and TV. He struggled, he fought for his rights and he continued to live his purpose on his terms.

Do you know this man? POLICE have not apprehended Pookie the serial rapist. We know he has attacked members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and there is a $5,000 reward offered by Crime Stoppers. If you have ANY information, PLEASE call Crime Stoppers

ASK ALMA:

Dear can’t wait, Ok, I just slapped you upside the back of your head. Did you feel it? What’s up with you? Are you having a mid-life crisis? Why are you plotting to jump headfirst into the lake of natural-born fools? You’ve been married for more than 30 years. What an amazing blessing.

Come on PEOPLE! Don’t you CARE? Will it matter when it is your sister, mother, aunt or grandmotheror maybe YOU?

You’ve both worked hard to maintain and establish this life-long commitment. Now you want to destroy it? Although you didn’t say how the conversation went with your wife, I assume you told her about this reconnect and upcoming lunch, since you’re planning to meet your old girlfriend at a local restaurant where the owners know your wife. Trust me, you’ve hurt your wife’s feelings. And if you didn’t tell her, when she finds out her feelings will be hurt. This reconnect is wrong on so many levels, and worse, it’s disrespectful to your mate. You are not available to meet your old girlfriend for lunch, breakfast, brunch or dinner. You have nothing to offer her that doesn’t also involve your wife, so don’t try. Forget the kiss. I hope you will rethink this MLC. Stop emailing this woman and cancel the lunch. The love and magic you’ve shared with your wife is far more amazing than what’s over the fence – or what would be sitting across from you at that lunch table. Alma

Business formerly known as Black Jack Pizza launches Naming Contest

The Jones family opened its press conference with a muchneeded prayer, they said. Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Erik Wilson, in his prayer, said the business formerly known as Black Jack Pizza has been good for the community and the City of Dallas and that support for the owners is important. Support is just what Dorothy Jones says is needed as she fights a battle she never thought she would encounter, receiving a cease and desist letter from BlackJack Pizza Enterprises, threatening her business with legal action. The Colorado-based company with over 40 locations in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona and Montana says if the Joneses don’t stop using any resemblance to the name they trademarked in 1987--three years before the Jones came on the scene, there would be consequences. A clearly emotional Mrs. Jones talked about how it didn’t seem fair that a name she had used almost three decades was being stripped from her business. As she talked about how she and her son started the company to provide pizza to an area that was overlooked by major chains, Mrs. Jones said she didn’t want to change the name. “I feel like it will hurt my business because people will think that we have sold it,” she said. And that was the dream that son Terry said he had when he first approached her about opening a restaurant that while pizza was the main course, they offered a menu that included burgers, hot wings, beans and cornbread, salads and spaghetti. “We were providing a service and products to an area that others refused to value.” Dallas City councilwoman Tiffinni A. Young remembers her Lincoln High School days and visits to Black Jack Pizza in Sunny South Dallas. “We always enjoyed coming to Black Jack Pizza as a child and I’m looking forward to continuing the support.” Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce President Wilton Munnings echoed Ms. Young’s comments on the contributions of the business formerly known as Black Jack Pizza.

That depends; people are eligible to enroll in Medicare prior to age 65 only if they’re on Social Security Disability and have met the 24-month waiting period, or have a special condition. Check with the Social Security Administration to see when you will be eligible for Medicare. If you find that you’re not eligible for Medicare yet, then you can always visit yourtexasbenefits.com or call 2-1-1, that’s if you live in Texas, to find what medical resources are available in your area.
