MILLION MAN MARCH

HON. MINISTER LOUIS FARRAKHAN Convener of the Million Man March Oct. 16, 1995 Convener of Justice or Else March Oct. 10, 2015 pages 8-9

CHIEF DAVID BROWN:

WE AIN’T READY! BY VINCENT HALL

“Once more and again,” as they used to say in the old black church, I have to tip my hat to Mayor Mike Rawlings. Dallas has at sundry times, been victim of its own “weak mayor system,” but Mayor Rawlings made a real strong move the other day on behalf of Dallas Police Chief David Brown. After learning of a cowardly and covert coup attempt by a couple of sophomoric council members, Mayor Rawlings shot across the bow to let them know that their efforts would be short-lived. The two conspirators were cut off at the pass. Now let me say right off that this is nothing new for Dallas, and it's not just about race as some would conjecture. If you peered at the article across from the Chief’s “Breaking news” in Dallas’ major daily, you would see that a White woman is being excoriated as well. There has always been a sinister, sobering, vile and vindictive spirit that hovers over

Dallas. We tend to muse if not major in pettiness. Let me say this parenthetically about District Attorney Susan Hawk. She is being treated unfairly just as Craig Watkins was. I voted for Craig and stand by that, but I believed DA Hawk to have been a good judge when she was on the bench. As a city we miss the point. She admitted to some personal problems and we treat her as if she has leprosy. But if painkillers or depression make you a leper, we need her recovery in order to inspire the other 600,000 lepers in this city. Closing parenthesis… Where was I? Oh…Chief David Brown. David Brown is from the hood; he is Dallas' Horatio Alger story. Just in case you don't know, Horatio Alger is best known for his inspirational juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class

security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. Most of us who remember Chief Brown from the neighborhood remember him as serious, anodyne and committed. In fact you could search the nation and not find five police chiefs in major cities who have also been successful at the administrative role of City Manager. Brown did! When Mayor Rawlings came to his defense, he did so because he realizes how rare and respected Chief David Brown is. It is nothing at all new that some of the police unions show up with their grievances in hand. They have a tough job, but some of them specialize in whining and feel themselves above the law that any civilian is due to respect. They even brought a talking, tawdry, token Negro to the press conference…what’s new?

What upset many of us is that the surname that surfaced first amidst this foolishness was Medrano. For African-Americans in Dallas who don't know the Medrano family, suffice it to say that when we had no other alliances in civil rights, labor or political issues, they were our principal allies. “Familia Medrano” is to Dallas minorities what Cesar Chavez was to California farm workers. I am not sure why Councilman Adam Medrano made such a move. But it was hurtful. Too many of us picketed and protested to have men like Chief Brown be given a chance for some new age group power seekers to dismantle it. We ain't having it. Dallas has a sad history of using institutions and people and discarding them as no longer relevant. We blew up Reunion Arena, we blew up Texas Stadium, but you rest assured that Chief David Brown will not walk out of that office unless he is proven unfit or when he is good and ready. But he ain’t ready, so we ain’t ready!!!

Investment in MGM Grand Resort Casino could yield large return for Radio One

Aubry Stone, Chairman of USBC, Cathy Hughes, Founder of Radio One, and Ron Busby, President of USBC at the 2015 SCBM

The definition of an entrepreneur is an individual who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so. Transitioning from a homeless single mother to the owner of the largest Black-owned broadcast company in the U.S., Cathy Hughes, founder of Radio One, is the living example of a "risk taker." Most recently, she proved her risk acumen by investing $40 million into the new MGM Grand Casino at the National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Just as she took the risk of starting her own radio station in 1980, she is now taking the necessary risk to ensure the company's success. According to consultants hired by the State of Maryland, the $1.3 billion MGM Resort is projected to generate $713 million to $719 million in annual gambling revenue by 2019. At a 1 percent cut, this translates into a projected 7 million dollars annually for Radio One. In recent months, the company lost $32 million and stock value is down to $2.50 per share This investment could mean a complete financial turnaround for Radio One. Hughes' investment may result in future opportunities to broadcast MGM

Grand boxing matches, concerts, and other events on Radio One-owned radio stations (Jonathan O'Connell, Washington Post). This deal is an example of what can happen when companies are required to include a minority-owned business in on the conversation. Aside from the Radio One deal, MGM Grand is committed to diversity and inclusion. Recently, they donated $1 million to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Minorities also account for 65% of MGM Grand's employees. MGM Chief Executive James Murren, says, that diversity "has been the driving force behind the entire company."

EvEry ONE IS IMPOrTANT. You can help keep your child healthy with regular checkups and vaccines. Every one is important. And they’re free with Children’s Medicaid.

Official layout of MGM Grand at the National Harbor in Oxon Hill, MD

It is our hope that more companies like MGM Grand will commit themselves to providing more opportunities to minority owned businesses, outside the confines of mandates and set asides. As minority-owned businesses continue to grow and Black spend hits $1.1 trillion, corporate entities can no longer afford to exclude and ignore Black businesses and consumers. Congratulations to Cathy Hughes, and the rest of the Radio One team on a big win and we look forward to hearing MGM Grand events on Majic 102.3!

Your child will also get other health benefits like free prescription drugs, dental care, eye exams, and glasses. Even rides to and from the doctor or dentist’s office. Call today or visit our website to apply.

Fort Worth, TX - Six hundred Mercedes-Benz Financial Services employees mobilized across the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, volunteering to make a positive difference with 12 local nonprofit organizations during the week of Sept. 21, 2015. This was the third annual Week of Caring for the company, whose Business Operations Center is located in Fort Worth. Week of Caring is a weeklong community service campaign that the automotive financial services company has organized as part of its corporate commitment to make a difference in the communities where its team members live and work. The volunteer projects were selected by employees and varied from helping elementary students, senior citizens, the underprivileged and the hungry. In addition, the company presented a $50,000 check to REAL School Gardens at Cannon Elementary School in Grapevine, Texas for a brand new learning garden. Eighty-five employees from Mercedes-Benz Financial Services volunteered to build the garden from the ground up. The garden will be a great science-learning tool for the students, where a variety of hands-on activities will be engaging tools to learn math, science and language arts. Statistics show that school learning gardens improve grades and test scores by 12 to 15 percent. Jai Kately was excited to give back to a school he attended Sagamore Hill Elementary. He joined 34 of his coworkers in spending the day building individual bookshelves for 300 first graders to take home. The volunteers helped the youngsters decorate the bookshelves with paint and pick out two books to start their home library. "I grew up poor in this neighborhood, so I know what it is like for these students," Kately said. "I want to do what I can to help them." Kately has found ways to volunteer in the East Fort Worth community on his own as well for the past decade. Some of the volunteer projects took place at the MercedesBenz Financial Services Fort Worth Business Operations Center. One large conference room at the facility was turned into an

The packaged ingredients include fortified soy and rice casserole-style meals, specifically formulated to meet the nutritional needs of a starving child. All the food packaged was delivered to the Tarrant Area Food Bank. Employee Grace Gallegos was proud to be a part of the Week of Caring. "I got involved because I wanted to help with the cause of providing food to families here in North Texas and around the world," Gallegos said. "This is such a small sacrifice for us to take time out of our day to take part in the worthy volunteer project." Mercedes-Benz Financial Services President and CEO Peter Zieringer is proud of the dedication employees had in improving their communities. "The Week of Caring is one of my favorite weeks of the year, because it is gratifying to see the impact our team members have when they roll up their sleeves and give back to worthy organizations doing great work," said Zieringer. "In just five days, my fellow colleagues clocked nearly 4,000 hours of service benefitting 12 different community partners in the Dallas/Fort Worth area." Other organizations helped by the volunteers include the Community Food Bank in Fort Worth, Don't Forget to Feed Me, Spark! Dallas, Community Storehouse in Fort Worth, SafeHaven in Arlington and Fort Worth, Junior Achievement of Chisholm Trail, Trinity Habitat for Humanity, Tarrant Area Food Bank, and the Senior Citizens Services of Tarrant County. Week of Caring is a nationwide commitment for the company. Volunteers from the company's headquarters, located in Farmington Hills, Mich., also participated in weeklong projects at the same time. Since 2013, more than 75 volunteer projects, spanning 25,000 hours of service have been provided. Mercedes-Benz Financial Services is focused on building longterm partnerships with organizations committed to creating positive social change in the areas of education, community enhancement, arts & culture, and diversity & inclusion.

Given his position in the polls and his now-expanding pocketbook, Ben Carson is not likely to go anywhere. Will we be stuck with the brother from another planet as nominee, and possibly President of the United States? Carson admits that he does not know what he is taking on. When asked how, as President, he would handle the hurricane that threatened the East coast on September 30, he responded, “I don’t know. Many of his other responses to questions mirror those of Donald Trump’s, which boil down to “we’ll figure it out. The voters are expecting Carson or Trump to “straighten out the government, trust because of their reputations, even they have no experience in running a country. How can we trust people who would build walls between the US and Mexico, or who could not accept Muslims in

government? How can we trust a prevaricator like Carly Fiorina who uses nonexistent videos as a talking point in her campaign? The brother from another planet may be doing so well in the polls because he is pandering to predominately conservative white audiences with his extreme views. His clear contempt for African Americans who are not in his corner is troubling. He says that the media has “manipulated African Americans. His comments seem to suggest that African Americans do not have minds of our own, and that we are open to manipulation. Why didn’t he say that his white conservative allies are being manipulated by his homophobic, jingoistic comments? Carson has said many of the things conservatives want to hear. He has described marriage as a union between a man and a woman, even as the LGBT community has waged a successful struggle for marriage equality. He has associated the gay community with “beastiality and referenced marriage equality advocates with extreme groups like NAMBLA (North American Man/ Boy Love Association), which few support. He says homosexuality is “a choice because people go to jail straight and come out gay. Some support him because he is unapologetically “politically

TWO OF OUR BRIGHTEST professionals who didn’t make excuses when it came to educating our children. Whether she was in her capacity as Chancellor for Tarrant County College District or serving on the Board of Trustees for Paul Quinn College, she was always passionate and focused. Recently we lost two great educators - Dr. Johnson Hadley and Dr. Sybil C. Mobley. When you think of great educators, these two women should be among those you remember. Dr. Mobley was the dean emeritus of the School of Business and Industry at Florida A&M University, where she built a powerhouse and had produced some of the best business men

and women, entrepreneurs and educators in the world. As a freshman I watched with admiration the young students who proudly entered SBI and later graduated with distinction. That school created leaders and taught excellence and a standard that the students proudly displayed wherever they went. The mother of one of my sorority sisters and a proud member of sister sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Dr. Mobley visited Dallas in the 1980s. It was a wonderful moment as alumni and friends enjoyed some of her time. We were honored because she was in high demand, but FAMU was important to her and many of her former students

incorrect. But he crosses the line between being politically incorrect and being offensive, inhumane, and bigoted. He would not trust a Muslim to be commander-in-chief. Half a century or so ago, there were fears that Catholic President John F. Kennedy might be unfit for office because of his religion. The quote that catapulted Carson onto the public stage was one he made at the National Prayer Breakfast. He described the Affordable Care Act (often known as Obamacare) as worse than slavery. President Obama was in the audience and Republicans applauded Carson for his audacity in confronting our President to his face. Since Carson had never been a slave (except, clearly, mentally), his comments were absurd. His comments suggested that he would use race, but in a pejorative way (consider the manipulated black folks), but they were embraced. If Ben Carson were anybody other than a reportedly smart African American neurosurgeon, would he be holding his own in the polls? If he had not described the Black Lives Matters movement as “divisive, would he have any traction? In the weeks since the September 16 debate, he has gained almost a million Facebook followers – 50,000 more than Donald Trump. Does that mean he could be President? I trust that the brother from another planet will fizz out, but given this Republican race, anything could happen. Are we ready for an anti-Muslim, anti-gay, evangelistic hardliner to preside over our country? Wake up, voters. Carson is an impending disaster.

Punk’d by the Pope?

Quit Playin’ Vincent Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award-winning columnist. Irrespective of the fact that some 70,000,000 plus, or roughly 22% of our population is Catholic, I am not. However, I was raised to show deference to the sacred rituals of other religions. That being said, I must tell you by George, that I love Pope Francis. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and his birth name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio. Get it… ”By George,” as in Jorge. Jorge in Spanish is George…It was a pun!! Stay with me here because I know you had a hard time putting your finger on why you were spellbound with Pope Francis’s visit to Cuba and to the United States. If for no other reason than the fact that he eliminated GOP frontrunner “Donald J. Chump”

5

OCTOBER 7, 2015

from the daily media melee, Pope Francis did America a great big favor. This papal visit may not mean much to some, but every part of his demeanor, dialogue, and even his dialect were a symbol of much-needed humility. The truth of the matter is that America has gotten, as my grandmother used to say, “Beside herself.” Americans have rehearsed and regurgitated that rhetoric about being “Exceptional” for so long, that we have come to believe it. We actually believe that we are somehow better than all of those

Third World nations that Pope Francis implored us to take care of in the name of the God we claim. If it wasn’t bad enough that Pope Francis pissed off the Republican Party by continually invoking the idea of immigration in all of its spiritual contexts, he wrecked them on the Climate Change, the Iran Nuclear Treaty and on several of their wrong-headed social

positions. He did not spare the Democrats, but the GOP fared far worse. What made Pope Francis so endearing was his constant request for us to pray for him. He did it in such an earnest and impaled voice; over and over. He asked us to pray

that he would have the strength to help others. Symbolically, I believe he implied that we need to humble ourselves, pray for one another and pray for the world. The world that has so much less than we have been blessed with. Don’t get caught up in the sordid papal history which has been conjectured to have ties with the mafia. Don’t be disillusioned by all of the ritual and headwear and holy garments. Don’t reduce the Pope or the Catholic Church to the level of a few wayward perverts. Pope Francis modeled Jesus in reminding us of our sins and summoning us toward repentance and a better future. In the midst of his genius and sang-froid, he even made a silent statement with the car he drove. That little four-door Fiat he rode in, when juxtaposed to those massive American SUVs was a constant reminder of how overwrought we are with power and how wasteful we are with God’s economy and

environment. America, you might have missed it, but we just got Punk’d. Pope Francis used the best of our past to point out the failings of our present. He said as much to Congress. “A nation can be considered great when it defends liberty as Lincoln did, when it fosters a culture which enables people to “dream” of full rights for all their brothers and sisters, as Martin Luther King sought to do; when it strives for justice and the cause of the oppressed, as Dorothy Day did by her tireless work, the fruit of a faith which becomes dialogue and sows peace in the contemplative style of Thomas Merton. “In these remarks I have sought to present some of the richness of your cultural heritage, of the spirit of the American people. It is my desire that this spirit continue to develop and grow, so that as many young people as possible can inherit and dwell in a land which has inspired so many people to dream. “God bless America!”

Obama’s clean power plan right for world’s evolving energy needs From the Capitol Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

It is often forgotten that the Clean Air Act was signed into law in 1970 after it passed Congress by a strong bipartisan vote. By enacting this landmark legislation, the federal government took a stand for public health and against air pollution, a move that was heralded on both sides of the aisle and applauded by the American people because it put the public’s interests first. In the decades that followed, we saw substantial economic growth while enjoying a cleaner environment. The fight to protect our environment didn’t end in 1970. President Obama is continuing this effort with the Clean Power Plan, which aims to transform the way we produce energy. Unfortunately,

just as has been the case with the Clean Air Act, the Clean Power Plan is not short on detractors. The same cast of characters that cried foul and predicted the end of American competitiveness in 1970 is making the same exaggerated claims today about the Clean Power Plan. This posturing is both shortsighted and ill-founded. I hear from some of my Republican colleagues that if the United States cuts its carbon emissions, it will have no impact on the global temperature or sea levels. Yet, that is not the reality. Any effort to reduce emissions will have an impact, and through our leadership we can challenge other nations to do the same. As we heard from

Chinese President Xi Jinping, China has accepted this challenge and is introducing a cap-and-trade program that will undoubtedly spur innovation and economic growth from one of our key competitors. The world’s top carbon emitter is now stepping up along with many others around the world. We are not alone. Rather, we are leading the effort to solve the greatest environmental challenge of this generation. I am proud of the work the Environmental Protection Agency is doing. The agency’s top priority is to protect the health of the public and the planet, and I commend them for staying true to their mission in the face of unfounded and hyperbolic criticism. So what are the facts? The Clean Power Plan is projected to save American families nearly $85 on their annual energy bills in 2030. It will grow the solar and wind energy industries and make major advancements in energy efficiency across our economy. A notable co-

benefit of the Clean Power Plan comes in the form of lives saved. A cleaner energy sector will reduce premature deaths due to power plant emissions by 90 percent in 2030. In addition, fewer asthma attacks in children, fewer missed school days and fewer sick days at work will ultimately lead to a more productive workforce and population. Scientists have made it abundantly clear to lawmakers and industry leaders alike that climate change is here and we must work together to deal with it. Without transforming our energy sources or reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, we will not be able to address the looming challenge of climate change. The issue of addressing climate change should not be relegated to partisan bickering on the campaign trail or restricted to academic discussions. This will affect us all, and we all should be concerned. Leaders in the faith community have also been calling on us to address climate change. When

Pope Francis spoke before a joint session of Congress last week, he called for “a courageous and responsible effort to redirect our steps and to avert the most serious effects of the environmental deterioration caused by human activity.” He went on to state, “I am convinced that we can make a difference, and I have no doubt that the United States — and this Congress — have an important role to play.” The Clean Power Plan is one piece of the broader effort we need to undertake to ensure a healthy environment and a vibrant future for our children and grandchildren. We need to listen to our scientists, to our religious leaders and to the American people. We must support broad-based national policies that will cut carbon pollution because acting on climate change is not only an environmental imperative, but a public health and economic one as well.

Million Man March

w w w. T E X A S M E T R O N E W S . C O M

1995

Justice or Else 2015 By Cheryl Smith So much has happened in 20 years. In 1995, the second girl of my Three Live Crew, Annya, Trayvon Martin and gymnast Gabby Douglas were born; it was the first year of the Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon; Dallas Texas elected its first Black Mayor - Ron Kirk; The World Trade Organization was formed; Selena was murdered; the Oklahoma City Bombing took place; eBay went live; The Ebola virus kills 244 Africans in Kikwit, Zaire in Central Africa; a magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurs near Kobe, Japan, killing 6,433 people, Cost of a gallon of Gas $1.09, Dow Jones closes above 5,000 for the first time, World Leaders were - Japan Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama, Mexico President Ernesto Zedillo, Russia / Soviet Union General Secretary of the CPSU Boris Yeltsin, South Africa State President Nelson Mandela and United States President Bill Clinton; Major League Baseball players end a 232-day strike; 42 U.S.C. § 13701, entitled Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act is passed ( informal name Megan's Law ) which helps to make parents aware of the presence of convicted sex offenders in their neighborhood; The DVD, an optical disc computer storage media format, is announced; and, OJ Simpson is found not guilty. As a Black woman who grew up on the east coast of these United States of America; I was excited when I first heard that the Hon. Minister Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam, was calling together One Million Black Men to gather in Washington, DC. on October 16, 1995. To me, the call was reminiscent of the call made in the cult classic movie, The Warriors. Definitely one of my favorite movies of all time, the story focuses on Cyrus, the leader of the Gramercy Riffs, the largest and most powerful gang. Cyrus issues a call for gangs from across the state to gather, unarmed, in the Bronx to talk about taking over the police and the city. His message was one of numbers and empowerment because where there is unity, there is strength. Min. Farrakhan issued a call, but the taking over part was

Photos courtesy finalcall.com more about men taking their rightful places in their families, their communities and the world, in addition to atoning for their past behaviors and pledging to be better men, husbands, brothers, sons, fathers and leaders. To say I was excited would be an understatement. The strength in numbers theory or concept and also work here too as the fight for equality and an end to injustices continues. But everyone wasn’t excited, In addition to the skeptics from the mainstream, and across the nation, there was a little pushback from Black women. “Why is he having a gathering for just Black men,” some women asked. “We need someone to talk to us too!” I agreed that we women, many who didn’t have a fatherfigure in our lives, needed a man to have an oh so important talk. And to add insult to injury for those women, Min. Farrakhan began holding “Men Only Meetings” across the country, as support for the March continued to grow. Some women even held protests outside of the meeting venues. This was not the case in Dallas, TX. Now women did gather. I was among those who gathered as my station, Soul 73 KKDA gave the green light to do a three-hour broadcast (two preempted hours along with the popular regularly-scheduled Talk Back with Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price). Since Commissioner Price would be attending the meeting, where well over 10,000 men showed up, I led the discussion, informing listeners about what was going on outside, while also pulling bystanders to talk about the March, the Men Only Meetings and whatever was going on pertaining to the topics. Women stood outside respectfully speaking to the men and offering water. I made my position clear. Minister Farrakhan wanted to have a man-to-man talk with Black men. When you consider all the issues affecting our communities and families, I felt somebody needed to talk to

the brothers! The Minister held one Women’s Only Meeting in Atlanta and I traveled to the event. On the way, I stopped to visit my father. My father had a lot of respect for Min. Farrakhan and he was glad I was attending. It was beautiful just seeing all the sisters, showing love to one another. The Minister’s message to us was one of empowerment, love and respect, along with a lot of fatherly advice about conduct, dress, relationships and life. Sure there were a lot of tee shirts and posters, food and other souvenirs that were sold, at all of these events, but there were some strong and productive conversations, speeches and relationship building. It was interesting to hear all the commentary surrounding the Million Man March. Efforts to marginalize the event, its purpose, and the number in attendance were thwarted by the strong presence of the Black Press. For months leading up to the Million Man March, there was constant coverage from some of our major black-owned media outlets, sparking an interest that many say helped impact participation significantly. Still on the day of the March, the reports were varied. The National Park Service’s original estimate reported 400,000 marchers. Dr. Farouk EL-Baz, director of the Center for Remote Sensing at Boston University, said the Center’s final analysis of the crowd size present during the “Million Man March” was 837,214, with a margin of error of plus or minus 20 percent. The NPS later conceded that their numbers were not accurate. Comedian and activist Dick Gregory, in commenting about the March and what a wonderful experience it was, said that the undercount was unfortunate and expected. He added that if there had been a fight at the March, reports would have aired saying, “Ten million N-----s were fighting...”

w w w. T E X A S M E T R O N E W S . com I also agree that there were many who put their spin on the Million Man March trying to separate the beautiful message of that day from “Minister Farrakhan, the one through whom the message of Atonement came.” All day, you heard people talking about, “It’s not about Min. Farrakhan!” Ahh, and to them I say, just like the members of the rap group Public Enemy, who were in attendance, “Don’t Believe the Hype!” You have to ask yourself at that time in history, who could have called such a gathering and would as many people have shown up? At that historic gathering, which was called for men but featured women speakers, some of the speakers were: civil rights movement pioneer Rosa Parks and poet Maya Angelou, Dr. Dorothy Irene Height, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Stevie Wonder and of course, Min. Farrakhan. According to the Nation of Islam, immediately following the March, roughly 1.7 million Black men registered to vote and organizational memberships skyrocketed—the NAACP, churches and mosques reported huge increases and the National Association of Black Social Workers reported a flood of 13,000 applications to adopt Black children. “The Million Man March was one of the most historic organizing and mobilizing events in the history of Black people in the United States,” said Chicago-based Dr. Conrad Worrill, who was a main organizer of the March and the current president emeritus of the National United Black Front. Congress shut down that day and President William Clinton was ‘out of town.’ “Mainstream media in American and media outlets from around the world were watching. The world did not see thieves, criminals and savages as usually portrayed through mainstream music, movies and other forms of media; on that day, the world saw a vastly different picture of the Black man in America. The world saw Black men demonstrating the willingness to shoulder the responsibility of improving themselves and the community. There was neither one fight nor one arrest that day. There was no smoking or drinking. The Washington Mall, where the March was held, was left as clean as it was found. Two of the best descriptions of the Million Man March include the word ‘miracle’ and the phrase ‘a glimpse of heaven.’” Since Oct. 16, 1995, there have been a Million Woman, Million Youth and Family Marches, Millions for Reparations, the Million Mom March, Million Worker March, Millions for Mumia and other public demonstrations. A major statement the Minister made at the March was calling for an end to the disrespect of Black women, a

In the movie, The Warriors, a memorable line is: “Warriors come out and play.” Well, there won’t be any playing in the nation’s Capital on October 10, 2015. The Ball of Confusion of the 60s is even more troubling and vicious and these times call for drastic measures. Here’s the Million Man March Pledge that the men took on October 16, 1995. I am sure there will be additions to this rallying cry. Hopefully many men will reaffirm this pledge and also, there will be one for the women AND our children!

MILLION MAN MARCH PLEDGE I PLEDGE that from this day forward I will strive to love my brother as I love myself. I, from this day forward, will strive to improve myself spiritually, morally, mentally, socially, politically, and economically for the benefit of myself, my family, and my people. I pledge that I will strive to build business, build houses, build hospitals, build factories, and enter into international trade for the good of myself, my family, and my people. moratorium on use of the “b-word,” the absolute end to domestic violence and the immediate cessation of any and all kinds of sexual abuse and exploitation of women and children. There’s so much more data available at www.finalcall. com. So as the 20th anniversary arrives, all eyes are on the nation’s Capital again as folks gather again, this time on October 10, 2015. It’s important to note that this time around we have a Black president and guess what? Barack Obama attended the Million Man March! And, this time the gathering is multicultural and women will be attending. In this region, Min. Robert Muhammad, along with Local Organizing Committees, has held town hall meetings addressing the many issues the #JusticeorElse Movement are calling attention to. The theme is so appropriate, especially when you consider the times that are upon us. “Justice or Else” adequately expresses the sentiment of many who are so tired of the countless injustices that continue to plague society and erode the quality of life for all. TV One will be providing coverage and you can join me on Twitter or FaceBook throughout the day as we share another history making event.

I pledge that from this day forward I will never raise my hand with a knife or a gun to beat, cut, or shoot any member of my family or any human being except in selfdefense. I pledge from this day forward I will never abuse my wife by striking her, disrespecting her, for she is the mother of my children and the producer of my future. I pledge that from this day forward I will never engage in the abuse of children, little boys or little girls for sexual gratification. For I will let them grow in peace to be strong men and women for the future of our people. I will never again use the "b word" to describe any female. But particularly my own black sister. I pledge from this day forward that I will not poison my body with drugs or that which is destructive to my health and my well-being. I pledge from this day forward I will support black newspapers, black radio, black television. I will support black artists who clean up their acts to show respect for themselves and respect for their people and respect for the ears of the human family. I will do all of this, so help me God.

IN MEMORIAM

NABJ Mourns Loss of Former President Sidmel Estes WASHINGTON - The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) mourns the passing of former NABJ President Sidmel Estes (199193). Estes was the first woman to be elected president of the association. She also served as an NABJ regional director and president of the Atlanta chapter. Estes, 60, died October 6. Estes began her career at WAGA-TV/Fox 5 in Atlanta, where she served as the executive producer of numerous programs. She was the co-creator and executive producer of “Good Day Atlanta,” which became the number one show in its market and won seven Emmy Awards under her direction. In 2006, Estes left WAGA-TV to start BreakThrough Inc., a media consulting firm with clients including the Frederick Douglass Family Foundation, the McCormick Tribune Fellows Foundation, the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation and the Atlanta Center for Creative Inquiry. She also taught as an adjunct professor at Emory University and Clark Atlanta University. A pioneer and journalism industry veteran, Estes’ contributions will never be forgotten. “NABJ grieves for Miss Sidmel. Our hearts are so heavy. Sidmel’s in-your-face leadership style was my introduction to the best of NABJ as a new student member in 1993,” NABJ President Sarah Glover said. “’Holy smokes! This lady is for real,’ I thought. She took news organizations to task and members, too. If you were not doing right, she would not hesitate to let you know. Sidmel was an admired journalist and loving mother. She was the working woman that media moms could model and aspire to be. She handled all her roles gracefully. “I’m so sad she is gone, but her passion and love for NABJ lives on in all of us.” During Estes’ tenure as president of the association, NABJ increased its membership to more than 2,000 journalists and was included in Ebony magazine’s list of Top 100 Black Organizations. In 1994, she was a leader and co-creator of the first UNITY: Journalists of Color conference, and was instrumental in the release of its report, “Kerner Plus 25: A Call For Action,” which outlined steps the media industry should take to improve racial diversity. Estes was born on November 27, 1954 in Marysville, California, to Emellen Estes and Sidney Estes. She attended elementary and high school at public schools in Atlanta. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Journalism in 1976, and her Master of Science in Journalism in 1977, both from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in Chicago, where she was later inducted as a charter member of the school’s Hall of Achievement. NABJ Vice President of Broadcast Dorothy Tucker recounts the advice and mentorship that Estes offered to many. “At Northwestern, Sid was the big sister who would give you about five seconds to cry on her broad shoulders before delivering the message that defines of our world: ‘Now wipe your eyes and get your a-- back out there.’” Tucker said. As a result of her commitment to the community, Estes has received numerous awards from civic, community and church organizations. During her career in television and journalism, she has been recognized numerous times. Atlanta’s Mayor Andrew Young proclaimed “Sidmel Estes-Sumpter Day” on November 18, 1988, after she was named Media Woman of the Year by the Atlanta Chapter of the National Association of Media Women. She was featured in Ebony’s 100 Most Influential Black Americans in 1993, and in More Magazine’s book “50 Over 50.” Estes was honored with the Silver Circle Award from the Television Academy and has won several Emmy Awards. She received Northwestern University’s Alumni Service Award after being elected as president of the Northwestern Black Alumni Association in 2004. “She was a giant in our industry who helped countless young people achieve their dreams of becoming journalists through her presidency of the National Association of Black Journalists and, recently, as an adjunct professor at Clark Atlanta University,” AABJ President Eric Stirgus said in a statement from the chapter. Estes is survived by two sons, Joshua and Sidney. NABJ extends its sincerest condolences to Estes’ family and the countless friends within the journalism community who she leaves behind. The association will provide information on her funeral and where condolences can be sent as soon as those details are provided.

much more than you bargained for. According to this part of the bible, you also get Christ’s power to work with. Isn’t that something? No wonder Paul continues by saying, “That is why, for Christ’s sake I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” By itself, you might wonder how Paul comes up with this conclusion. But when taken in the context of the entire passage, isn’t it true that out of many impossible situations and circumstances, God rescued you? How many testimonies do you need to hear before you give God the praise He deserves? Or is it that you can testify on your own about frailties that have become strengths to be relied upon and give you wisdom to share? All I’m saying is stop fighting yourself. Stop denying your insecurities. Accept them and give them too, over to the Lord. Then step back and watch God do His thing with your life. He’ll do things you never could. Then watch Him revel in those who see His divine work through you. It’s that let go and let God thing again. Paul just reminds us that even on your worst day, it’s not about you. If you just remember it’s all about Him; your good, your bad and your ugly. May God bless and keep you always.

It’s All About Your Ugly Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

The subject is not new but the circumstances demand some of us need reassurance. Do you have an addiction, a weakness, something you are aware of but just cannot shake on your own? It may be a secret, your secret, something you dare not reveal for it goes the complete opposite of who you believe yourself to be and counter to the person whom you are truly trying to become. 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 says, “To keep me from becoming conceited, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” If I’m the only one shouting right now, it’s okay. I know many of you are shouting silently, T:5” internally, privately. You know some things in the bible reverberate over and over again and we still don’t get it. Ghana-Canada soccer game

Ghana and Canada rekindle a historic soccer rivalry at the senior level during their October 13, 2015 clash atWashington DCin the United States. The million dollar question is, will the Canadian underdogs repeat history with another victory or will Ghana avenge the 2-1 defeat suffered during their first clash a little over 30 years ago? A desire to repeat history and the urge for revenge have created suspense and generated interest in this friendly. Canada recorded that victory June 2, 1985 in Seoul during The Presidents Cup; an international tournamenthosted by the South Koreans at the time. It is in view of this high stakes that Top Global LLC, (a US based sports management company who are organizers of this game) are making feverish preparations to ensure a successful match which is anticipated to attract a largely cosmopolitan crowd. The above picture was painted to a delegation of media personnel that paid a courtesy call on the officials to explore details about the clash between the African soccer giants, 24th on the FIFA rankings and their North American underdogs, perched at 116 as of September 25, 2015. The media delegation comprised

Executive Officers of TheAfricanDream LLC and TribeZone Africa TV in the persons of Oral Ofori and Kofi Jacquaye respectively. On hand to talk to the delegation was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Top Global LLC Rev. Lord Asante Boadu, who was very excited to receive the US based Ghanaian media practitioners into his offices in Gaithersburg Maryland in the USA. He and his partner, Michael Bannerman-Hyde, said it was good to have members of the media pay extra attention to the efforts their organization was putting into ensuring the success of the October 13 game to be played at the RFK Stadium in Washington DC. Kofi Jacquaye and Oral Ofori on their parts wished the organizers well and encouraged media practitioners and institutions in the USA and especially within the African Diaspora to give the upcoming game maximum coverage owing to its historic nature. Top Global LLC as a Sports Management firm in the words of Rev. Boadu, the soccerloving-preacher, is “a firm that plans, negotiates and showcases exciting soccer matches and tourneys with the objective to promote and grow the love of soccer worldwide”.

He continued, “we collaborate with various sponsors, advertisers and media syndicates to bring these events to soccer fans in the United States, Canada and worldwide.” In his response to a question from Oral Ofori of TheAfricanDream LLC about the significance of the Ghana-Canada friendly, the Reverend said “We want to use this game as an opportunity to strengthen relationship between all the countries involved. The game seeks to offer Ghanaians in the Diaspora an opportunity to see their beloved Black Stars play in the Washington DC area which is very cosmopolitan and has lots of soccer loving Africans and nonAfricans alike. “For the Canadians, they will be able to rub shoulders with a top class Ghanaian side not as underdogs, but as worthy competitors that plan to use this game as an opportunity to emerge from the shadows of soccer maturity and show the world how the game is growing in Canada too. This will be a great cultural extravaganza uniting diverse cultures, something we are proud to be an integral part of” revealed Michael BannermanHyde, a Top Global LLC partner.

DAYES: Ask Pam about healthcare

Question: I’ve been on Medicaid for several months and drawing SSI from Social Security Administration (SSA). I’ll be turning age 62 next month, I was informed by SSA that my SSI would go away because I’ll

start drawing a Social Security Retirement check. Since my retirement income will be significantly greater than the SSI I’ll no longer be eligible for Medicaid assistance. I’m concerned about keeping some medical assistance so my question is will I get Medicare too when I turn 62 next month? Answer: That depends; people are eligible to enroll in Medicare prior to age 65 only if they’re on Social

Security Disability and have met the 24-month waiting period, or have a special condition. Check with the Social Security Administration to see when you will be eligible for Medicare. If you find that you’re not eligible for Medicare yet, then you can always visit yourtexasbenefits. com or call 2-1-1, that’s if you live in Texas, to find what medical resources are available in your area.
