Haitians say NO to Red Cross By Lena D ATLANTA BLACK STAR

As the death count after Hurricane Matthew approaches 900 and reports of deadly cholera outbreaks begin to surface, Haitians have sent out desperate pleas for help. Government officials estimate at least 350,000 people needed assistance after the devastating storm. Yet accompanying many requests for aid comes a warning – do not give

your money to the American Red Cross (ARC). Trust in the ARC, and in foreign aid more widely, has been badly shaken by a 2015 report that found donations had been squandered. Despite collecting nearly half a billion dollars to provide relief after the 2010 Haiti earthquake and pledging to build 700 permanent homes, the ARC has been accused of only building six. Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic - Grambling State University vs. Prairie View A&M University By Andrew Whigham, III

Usually, when the Fall comes around in Dallas, it means one or two things. The Grambling State University (GSU) Tigers vs. the Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) Panthers’ game and the State Fair of Texas. By all means everything fell into place on October 1, 2016. The beautiful backdrop from the Texas Star (Ferris Wheel) is in the distance. The aromas from the great foods of the State Fair of Texas was in the air. If you never attended a Historical Black College and University (HBCU), football, you are missing an event full of pageantry, music, ambiance and competition. From the time you step in the stadium, it’s “Showtime.” The crowd is normally dressed to a “T.” The Barbershops, Hair Salons, Nail shops and stores met their weekly goals during

Martin leads discussion on school choice

WASHINGTON, DC – Award-winning journalist Roland S. Martin kicked off his national School Choice is The Black Choice initiative on, October 5, 2016, with a town hall at the Howard University campus. TV One's NewsOne Now will air a School Choice: Black Choice town hall special. Part one and two premieres on October 21 and 28, respectively, at 7am ET. The two-hour panel, which Martin moderated, featured a variety of educators, advocates and opponents of educational reform to discuss the controversial issue of charters, vouchers and the school choice movement within the Black community. Among those on the panel: Dr. Steve Perry, Principal of Capital Preparatory Magnet School; George Parker, former President of the Washington Teachers Union; President of Democrats for Education Reform, Shavar Jeffries ; former director of DC Association of Charter Schools Dr. Ramona Edelin; President of the Washington Teachers Union, Elizabeth Davis; Director to the NAACP's Washington Bureau and Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Policy, Hilary O. Shelton; President of Medgar Evers College, Rudy Crew; Dr. Dawn Williams, Interim Dean of the School of Education at Howard University and Troy LaRaviere, former Principal at the number one rated neighborhood school in Chicago. School Choice Is The Black Choice is a national initiative designed to rally Black parents to take control of their children’s future. Roland, along with his wife, the Rev. Dr. Jacquie Hood Martin, have launched School Choice Is The Black Choice, through her non-profit, J. Hood and Associates. As an ambassador of the school choice movement, Roland Martin says it’s imperative that Black parents fully embrace all aspects of education, and advocate for what works best for their children. He says that the school choice/ed reform movement desperately need Black voices leading it, especially when it comes to mobilizing and organizing African Americans to make their voices heard about the education of their children. ”If you are standing in the way of kids getting a quality education, even if you wear the liberal/progressive label, you are the enemy,” said Roland Martin. “I’m sick and tired of seeing Black kids travel through traditional schools with little or no road to success. I’m a product of traditional public and magnet schools. For me, I care about what works. Traditional public, charter, private, magnet, home school, online schools, vouchers, I really don’t care. If it works for the parent and the child, I’m down with it.” Martin has long been an advocate on education issues, speaking at numerous education conferences across the country, including opening the National Charter School Convention in Nashville this June; hosting a number of discussions on his radio, TV and social media platforms; and rallying Blacks to get behind school choice in Tulsa, Chicago, Atlanta, Memphis and Nashville.

Shavar Jeffries (President of Democrats for Education Reform), Elizabeth Davis (President of the Washington Teachers Union), George Parker (former President of the Washington Teachers Union), Hilary O. Shelton (Director to the NAACP's Washington Bureau and Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Policy), Dr. Steve Perry (Principal of Capital Preparatory Magnet School), Rudy Crew (President of Medgar Evers College), Dr. Ramona Edelin (former Director, DC Association of Charter Public Schools) and Dr. Dawn Williams (Interim Dean of the School of Education at Howard University)

Roland Martin is also a board member of 50Can, a nonprofit education organization that works at the local level to advocate for a high-quality education for all kids, regardless of their address. He previously served on the board of StudentsFirst, an education advocacy non-profit launched by noted education, Dr. Michelle Rhee (it merged with 50Can this year). Martin also is the only national journalist to press Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and her former rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders, on the issue of charter schools, and their value to the education of Black children. In 2015, Roland S. Martin premiered the documentary The New Orleans Charter School Revolution: Ten Years After Katrina. The one-hour special, which aired on TV One and can been seen at RolandSMartin.com, explored the rebuilding and reorganizing of New Orleans’ once failing school system. As part of this special, Martin commissioned a poll of Black parents, which showed that more than 70% of them support not only charter schools but school vouchers. With the School Choice Is The Black Choice initiative, Martin will work with other education advocates to illuminate the issues of America’s K-12 education system and how successful charters can be a boon for the Black community. In addition, the project will celebrate families that have been transformed by the ability to access high-quality

schools and a more equitable education system. “As a former College Associate Dean of

Instruction; Dean of Career Programs; and Vice President of Academic Affairs, there is a misunderstanding of the term School Choice and the work of various kinds of schools. The creation of Freedom Schools is the first act of school choice for educating our children, then follows the development of homeschool based on the biblical principal of education begins at home and onward to the outreach by Christian schools by denominations such as Baptist, Methodist, Jesuit etc.” said Jacquie Hood Martin. “As an educator and education advocate our dialogue must be open and have the ability to work for us, rather than fighting against those who don't believe in our children's ability to succeed no matter where they go to school.” Over the next year, the School Choice Is The Black Choice initiative will conduct polling in several cities to gauge the perspective of Black parents on school choice; host a series of town halls in several cities; conduct forums with faith & clergy leaders designed to increase discussion around the launch of successful charter schools; and work with Black fraternities and sororities to create their own charter schools, especially his own fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, which he hopes to persuade to open 50 Alpha Academy charter schools

Health Insurance Marketplace begins Nov. 1, 2016 and runs through Jan. 31, 2017. Through the Marketplace, individuals are able to go to one place to search for health coverage options and choose from the health plans available in their area. The best source for information about the Marketplace is the website www.healthcare. gov. The website is available 24/7 and provides information on how the Marketplace works, what the benefits are and key deadlines. Individuals can also call 1.800.318.2596 to speak with trained customer service representatives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For individuals needing further assistance, Parkland Health & Hospital System will have certified application counselors available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday thru Friday in Parkland’s Business Office to answer questions about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and provide help enrolling in the Marketplace. The Business Office is located on the first floor of the old Parkland OPC, 5201 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas, 75235. Certified application counselors will not be available at any of Parkland’s Community Oriented Primary Care health centers. “We will have a limited number of certified application counselors available to assist patients with the enrollment process,” said Rhonda Miller, Parkland’s Senior Vice President of Revenue Cycle. “We encourage those who may qualify for the Marketplace to log into the government’s website or speak to one of the government’s trained customer service representatives.” Most people must have qualifying health coverage or pay a fee for the months they don’t have insurance. Health coverage exemptions are available based on a number of circumstances, including certain hardships, some life events, health coverage or financial status and membership in some groups. Additional information on exemptions is available at www.healthcare.gov. In addition, a special enrollment period (SEP) outside of the yearly open enrollment exists for those with certain life events including losing health coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby or adopting child. If an individual qualifies for an SEP, they usually have up to 60 days following the event to en-

roll in a plan. If they miss that window, they have to wait until the next open enrollment period to apply. Those who may need assistance can contact Parkland’s Customer Service department at 214.590.4900. For more information about Parkland’s services, visit www. parklandhospital.com.

Clinton and Trump aren’t the only ones who avoid highlighting hunger and poverty when issues of economic inequality are discussed. When Vice-President Joe Biden was charged with focusing on the middle class in his “Middle Class Task Force early in the Obama Administration, there was a conspicuous silence about the status of the poor. While President Obama has lots of issues to deal with, the poor have not been a priority for him. The Census Report that was released on September 13, Income and Poverty in the United States: 2015, documents improvements in our nation’s poverty status. Between 2014 and 2015, there were 3.5 million fewer people in poverty, and the poverty rate dropped quite significantly, from 14.8 percent to 13.5 percent. The poverty rate for African Americans dropped from 26.4 to 24.1 percent, and child poverty dropped from 36 percent to 32.7 percent among African Americans. Either Clinton or Trump could have talked about this economic good news with the caveat that while the drop in the poverty level is encouraging, there is still way too much poverty in our nation. One in five children under 18 live in poverty, along with one in three African American children. One in five

African American households (and one in eight households overall) have incomes below $15,000 a year. Further, there is significant “extreme poverty in our country, people who earn less than half the poverty line. Half of all poor households are among the extreme poor. One in ten African American households qualifies as extremely poor, which means an income of less than $12,000 for a family of four. How can someone earn so little? All it takes is a low-wage job with unstable hours. A minimum wage worker who works full-time, full-year earns a scant $15,000 a year, but many low-wage jobs aren’t full-time, fullyear. Many low-wage workers get “flexible scheduling, which means that their hours of work are not guaranteed. Sometimes they are called to report for work, but if business is slow they can be sent home. There are few protections for these workers, which is why the Fight for Fifteen ($15 an hour) has gained such momentum. To his credit, President Obama signed an executive order that requires federal contractors to pay at least $10 an hour to their workers. He has also signed an executive order requiring that federal contractors provide paid sick leave for their employees. Clearly, this administra-

tion is not indifferent to poor people. They just don’t talk much about them. But the poor should not be our unmentionables. They are the living proof that our predatory capitalistic system is terribly flawed. Thus, even as the 2015 report on income and poverty celebrates economic progress (with incomes finally rising after years of stagnation), it also suggests that too many hard-working people are living in a state of economic deprivation. More than 35 percent of African American households have incomes below $25,000. Many of these families have incomes above the poverty line, but not by much. While I know that Hillary Clinton has more compassion for the poor, and has articulated solutions that will help end poverty (Mr. Trump, on the other hand, once said the minimum wage was “too high), I think it important to hear matters of hunger and poverty addressed in the context of the Presidential debates. Our flawed economy has pushed the poor to the margins, but candidates can shed light on their issues and garner mainstream attention for them. Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. HALL: That $2 Mouth

Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall My paternal grandmother, Mable, was quick witted and even faster at getting to the point. My Grandmother Hall would often recite her favorite admonition: “Don’t let your two dollar mouth get your million dollar ass in trouble.” It’s unfortunate that Donald Trump never met my grandmother. I agree with Comedian Bill Maher’s assessment that Trump is a “Whiny little bitch,” and the first debate with Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton proved it. Trump throws hard hitting punches like George Foreman, but can’t take a punch from a welterweight like Barney Fife. Ok Millennials... Long before there was a Barney who loved everybody, there was a costar in the mythical town of Mayberry: Officer Barney Fife. You can Google it if you need to, but what I mean is that Trump has big talk but can’t handle the walk. Any blow of force and he cries

The problem is that if America is weary of “politics” it is because we are tired of the big talk that never translates to action. The second debate will be coming soon and Clinton will bait this “government subsidized tycoon” again. Trump is like a high school dropout; he has no class! Trump will never release his tax statements so we may never know how much this chump is worth. But the wisdom of my grandmother gives me enough to surmise that Trump’s $2 mouth has gotten him into more trouble than he ever imagined. The Whiny Little Bitch! CLINGMAN: Blaming the Victim Blackonomics By James Clingman

NNPA Newswire Columnist

Now that the dust has settled around President Obama’s comments at the Congressional Black Caucus Banquet, let me give you my take on the subject. In 2010, immediately following the midterm elections, in some instances, Black folks were blamed for the “Shellacking” as Barack Obama put it, of Democrat candidates. Again in 2014, the rancor directed at Blacks for failing to vote was raised to an even higher level. In response, U.S. Representative, Marcia Fudge, in an article by Sabrina Eaton of Cleveland.com, noted that “preliminary exit polls showed the African American proportion of the electorate increased over the 2010 midterms, and urged critics to ‘find another scapegoat. Don’t blame us!’”fudge Fudge continued, “Our community organizations and churches mobilized to encourage early voting opportunities with programs like ‘Souls to the Polls,’ and African American activists and state leaders stood ready to combat any instance of voter intimidation or fraud,” her statement said. “Black elected officials crisscrossed the country to discuss the urgency and importance of this election. We phone banked, knocked on doors and held ‘Get Out the Vote’ rallies. Our losses were not a referendum on African American political

Your legacy will be even greater among the folks who have supported you for the past eight years if you reciprocate to your own demand of us to “Go Vote!” If you refuse to help us, as Marcia Fudge said, “Don’t blame us.” fudge2 Comments Off , Pings Off. Within my group of friends, I have a female friend who likes a male friend who is also within the group. The female recently joined the group, but the male has been around some time. The female has tried her best game and, to much dismay, has not won over the male friend. The male friend, however, has given every cold shoulder possible. She, unfortunately, is slow to catch on. Others have tried to politely intervene, but the female keeps knocking. It has progressed to the point that the male friend has stopped coming around, and no one in the group is happy. The group now feels the need to address the issue, almost like an intervention. What do you suggest?

Leah Hi Leah, There are two ways to handle this situation: Your way (the easy way) or my way (the harder way). We both know that this woman has been reading too many Cosmo and Essence articles describing the perfect relationship. You know the ones – “How to Make Him Love You in 30 Days.” (I wonder why we never see such articles in a men’s magazine. LOL). I remember back in the day when I would read and scan the information into my memory, hanging on every word. Thank goodness I’m all grown up now and I know better. Here’s what I suggest: Somebody pick up a copy of the book by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tucillo, He’s Just Not That Into You. It’s based on an episode of “Sex and the City.” It gives straight up, no-nonsense descriptions of when a

man just really doesn’t like you. Some women can be extremely smart about everything in life except man. Some lose all sense of rational thoughts and acceptable behavior. We come up with the best of the best excuses for dealing with a dead-end and or non-existent relationship. I know you know what I’m sayin’. This book offers the best guidance one can receive. Wrap that book in a pretty gift bag with beautiful tissue paper. I mean, go all out. Not in front of everybody, but at the end of the evening, walk her to her car and give it to her. This should take place just between the two of you. Umhm, that would be nice. Or, you can go Nene on her and say loud and strong, “Girl, stop bothering him. He don’t like you like that, and you’re embarrassing yourself. Leave him alone and act like you got some class!” Bam! Case closed, it’s ova (LMBO). Whew! I get carried away sometimes. Allow me to swerve back over to the path of politeness. Have a one-on-one with your girl and share the following: One of the better qualities about men is that they aren’t that complicated, and we love them for that. Almost always there are no mixed messages, no need to read between the lines. It is what it is, and he’ll tell you if you listen. Stop, rewind, push play and let me say that again: All you have to do is listen. So ladies, stop rearranging his words in your mind to mean what you want him to say. If you push up on him and there’s no response, he’s just not into you. Remind her it’s not the end of the world. It’s just a pebble on her path of life. She needs to touch up her lip gloss and keep it moving.

HAITIANS SAY DON’T GIVE TO RED CROSS, continued from front page “In the coming days, many of you are going to write and ask me how you can ‘help Haiti’,” one woman said on Twitter after the hurricane, “Do not give to the American Red Cross.” She asked people to give instead to Haitian organizations and requested people not send goods that could be sourced locally. The joint investigation by ProPublica and NPR found rampant mismanagement at the heart of the ARC and charged it with consistent misrepresentation of the success of its projects, particularly in housing. The group has also been implored to hire more Haitians in its highest ranks. Responding to the report, the American Red Cross said in a statement it was “disappointed, once again, by the lack of balance, context and accuracy in the most recent reporting by ProPublica and NPR.” The allegations against the ARC came amid complaints against the failure of the entire international community to manage the 2010 Haitian disaster. After the earthquake, over $9B was pledged to help the country in its recovery. Yet critics argue that the money was not used so Haiti could be “built back better,” as officials had promised.

Instead, an estimated 55,000 Haitians are still living in tents or other makeshift shelters and few advances in disaster planning have been implemented.

Fans, family and the Hollywood community are mourning the passing of Tommy Ford. 'Martin' star Thomas Mikal Ford has passed away at age 52. The actor was reportedly recovering from knee surgery when he suffered a ruptured aneurysm and fell into “a state of unconsciousness” on Wednesday afternoon while recovering in an Atlanta hospital, according to TMZ reports. Ford's wife, Gina, confirmed that he was on life support after fellow actor and comedian Anthony Anderson sent out a tweet suggesting that Ford had passed before later deleting it. Actor Martin Lawrence also posted a message on his Instagram after learning of Ford's hospitalization. Other celebrity friends also spoke out to quiet the rumors and ask for prayess on social media as Ford continued to fight for his life. Family members reportedly made the difficult decision to turn off the life support late Wednesday afternoon, as Ford's health continued to decline. He spent his last moments surrounded by love ones. -Essence Actor Tommy Ford is a Hollywood veteran who became famous for his role in the syndicated sitcom MARTIN as Martin Lawrence’s best friend and side-kick “Tommy”. He recently completed four seasons on TV One’s hit show, WHO’S GOT JOKES hosted by Bill Bellemy, as the hilarious Pope of Comedy. This series was sizzling hot! In the past few years Tommy has starred in more than 15 films: FIRST IMPRESSION; HILLBILLY HIGHWAY; IVY LEAGUE; WHO DID I MARRY; UNSPOKEN WORD; DOUGLASS U; DREAMS (The Movie); NO MORE GAMES; SWITCHING THE SCRIPT; HARD LESSONS; 4 PLAY; MISSISSIPPI BLUES, BACK COURT and others. In addition to a new tv series called BASKETBALL WIVES. Recently, Tommy has been focusing on building a successful career behind the camera. He has directed and produced several webisodes; television dramas; and sitcom pilots: BLVD WEST; ANCESTORS; TROUPE; HEALING 100 HEARTS; COMEDY CAMP; FLIPPING BIRD & BRICK BY BRICK. He directed and produced seven films: CONFLICT OF INTEREST; BABY MAMAS CLUB (May 28th Lionsgate release); BEAT STREET RESURRECTED (Lionsgate release); THE CLUB; AT MOMU’S FEET; BREEZES; and most recently, SWITCHING LANES. Forgive Yourself, Be Free Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

Another word about forgiveness, if you don’t mind. This is a critical concept and worth repeating in and for the spiritual health of many so called Christians who profess faith as their spiritual cornerstone. I am rereading a book that I highly recommend by Beth Moore, Jesus, the One and Only. It is turning my soul inside out because I am getting prayer answered with each chapter and is the impetus for this column. But back to forgiveness for now. How many of you repent, but remain in a guilt ridden state of mind because you really don’t believe God will forgive you? If there was ever a challenge of faith, I believe this is it. Deep down inside, you can’t really live a life of spiritual freedom, because you have never thought God would really forgive you for all that ‘sinnin’ you used to do and sometimes miss doing even today. I bring this up because I believe you and I are dealing with another clever trick of the devil. If you really don’t believe you’ve been forgiven, you keep asking God to forgive you. Please follow me for a minute. If you keep asking for something that is already done, the mere prayer insults the God who took care of this for you. Enter the devil. Since you cannot accept your own forgiveness, you cannot stand on the faith you profess in God. Hence, you cannot live the life God has cleared you to embark upon. That’s a hypocrite. Enter Jesus. He took care of that.

You are forgiven. Your faith in Him allows you to accept that forgiveness and move on in freedom, which brings you courage for the testimony, your testimony that undoubtedly will help someone else. The ensuing behavior change in you lets the world know your faith is real. That’s a believer. Some might say that’s a soldier for the Lord. Anyway you look at it, its basis rests in the belief of whom Jesus was, what He did, why He did it and who He did it for i.e. you and me and anybody who looks like us. Face it. You are forgiven; not because I say so, but because Christ says so. Deal with it please. With it comes a peace that defies understanding and a peace that surely will set you free. It does not matter your degree of sin, your quantity or your perceived propensity to sin again. Christ did not and does not discriminate on that basis. Remember, you had nothing to do with this. God’s grace is what I’m talking about. That forgiveness thing should resonate in the soul when it collides with that grace thing. It’s up to us, you and me, to accept it. And when we do, something wonderful happens. You begin to see yourself as God sees you. You begin to understand the beauty of salvation and oddly enough, you truly want others to understand this gift also. Your testimony takes shape and your words are then shaped around the blessing that is Jesus Christ. Reread Luke and the tears that washed the Savior’s feet. “Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven, for she loved so much…” Luke 7:47. The answer to your being able to forgive yourself lies not within you but within the One who has already forgiven you.

PVAMU’s Marching Storm at halftime

an event of this magnitude. Most of the crowd will show their support for their school of choice by wearing the school colors. Most fans are peacock proud as they parade around the venue. By the way, this is before the game starts. Both Bands were demonstrating their meticulousness showmanship from the stands, playing popular songs, both old and new for their captive audiences assembled. By this time, the game begins and the focus redirects to the playing field. PVAMU kicked off to GSU’s Martez Carter that led to poor field position to start the game for the Tigers as Carter stepped out at the four yard line. The Tigers ran two plays that managed to promote the first score of the game. The scoring began with PVAMU’s Will Skinner sacking GSU’s Devante Kincade from Dallas Skyline High School in the end zone, giving PVAMU a 2-0 lead at the 14:22 mark in the first quarter. With the ensuing free kick the Panthers’ drive started at the 31 yard line on their half of the field. The Panthers were mixing the run and pass as the Tigers tighten up keeping them to no yards gained. GSU made a critical mistake by roughing PVAMU’s Trey Green that kept the drive alive. Then, Demarquo Lastrappe got a 50-yard pass from Green and Owen Hoolihan added the point after touchdown (PAT) to pad the Panthers’ lead to 9-0. The Tigers responded with a 75-yard drive that ended in the red zone, and then Jonathan Wallace missed a 23-yard field goal attempt. PVAMU took advantage of the GSU’s missed opportunity and marched down the field from the 24 yard line. Lee and the Panthers appeared to have the Tigers on their heels as they moved the ball to the GSU’s 33 yard line. From that point, Dawonya Tucker rush for 33 yards to the for a touchdown, Owen Hoolihan added the PAT with 5:08 left in the quarter to give the Panthers a 16-0 lead. At this point, the wheels came off of the Panthers wagon and GSU scored 16 unanswered points. GSU got things going and the momentum changed in their favor. Kincade connected with Chad Williams on a 13 yard passed to make the score 16-7 with PAT by Jonathon Wallace with 2:42 in the first quarter. At this point, both teams were going back and forth. Several turn-

overs occurred. Until, Kincade and GSU got their groove on with an 11 yard run to pay dirt. Jonathon Wallace successfully completed the PAT to make the score 16-14 in favor of PVAMU at the 10:39 in the second quarter. GSU would score again before the half when PVAMU’s Lorin Winston couldn’t handle a high

GSU’s Orchesis Dance Company during Halftime snap and push the ball out of the back of the end zone for a safety. That tied the score at 16-16 all with 2:00 minutes left in the half. Both teams continued to battle prior half time. GSU’s Jameel Jackson intercepted Green at the 42 yard line to bring the quarter to an end. As the teams were preparing to go to the locker rooms. The crowd grew with anticipation of the PVAMU’s Marching Storm with the Black Foxes and the GSU’s World Famed Tiger Marching Band with the Orchesis Dance Company performances. It has been known at half time most football spectators will go to the concession stand and get ready for the second half. Not at an HBCU game. The crowd wants to see the bands perform. Often times the crowd would prefer the halftime over the game itself. The presentation of the Campus queens and their escorts are part of

the pageantry. PVAMU went on first and was followed by GSU. Both bands gave everyone their money’s worth. The songs, formations, musicianship, the tributes and the dancing are what completes the dynamics of halftime at an HBCU game. Now the question of the day for the Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic Half time is: Who was the best band at halftime? Let us know @ hbcudfw@yahoo.com We will reveal the results in the next edition. Once the halftime performances completed, most spectators exited the stadium for refreshments and visited the State Fair of Texas. This occurs often after halftime as the stadiums become empty. As the teams returned to the field for the second half. They notice that the crowd dwindled as always at an HBCU game. This is culture when you attend any HBCU Classics or any HBCU game. The second half continued like the first half finished with GSU dominating with 20 unanswered points. GSU’s defense got stronger as PVAMU’s offense wasn’t moving the ball consistently. GSU’s offense was working with precision as PVAMU’s defense was coming up short. GSU’s Jestin Kelly rushed for 2 yards to pay dirt at the 09:00 mark. Jonathon Wallace converted the PAT to make the Score 23-16. Jestin Kelly scored on a 2 yard run making the score 29-16 GSU. Jonathon Wallace’s PAT was blocked, keeping the score 29-16 at the 10:29 mark in the 4th quarter. The scoring ended for GSU with a Kincade running for 14 yards for the score, to give GSU a commanding 36-16 lead with 3:01 left in the game. Both teams unveiled some new uniforms for the 53,183 there in attendance. The Tigers currently have a three game winning streak against the Panthers in the Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic. After the game, both Bands provided the crowd with selections to seal the deal for the Classic. Finally, HBCU games are more than a football game, it’s an event full of pageantry, music, ambiance and competition. “It’s all that and a bag of Chips.” If you have not witnessed an HBCU football. I wouldn’t tell anyone. It’s a must!!!!!!!!!!! Current records: GSU - (4-1, 3-0 photos by Gary R. Taite

Grambling Football to play at Louisiana Tech in 2019 By Kenn Rashad HBCU Sports

Grambling State and Louisiana Tech, two schools separated by a distance less than five miles, have agreed to face-off in a football game scheduled for the 2019 season for only the second time in history. The Tigers will play the Bulldogs at Joe Aillet Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019

in Ruston, La., according to a copy of the signed contract obtained by HBCU Sports through an open records request with Grambling. Grambling will receive a guaranteed payout of $300,000 and will be provided with 400 complimentary tickets, plus a minimum of 500 tickets on consignment. A “special arrangements” clause in the contract requires either school to pay a

$500,000 penalty for cancelling the contest and states that the Grambling State marching band “will be present at the game”. The two programs first played against each other back on Sept. 10, 2010, in Shreveport, La., where the FBS member Bulldogs won that contest by a score of 20-6 before a crowd of 30,101 at Independence Stadium.

be a minority, and I have felt uncomfortable,” she wrote. “I have felt out of place. But, I knew that was going to be part of this journey of going to an HBCU as a white Hispanic student.” Merino described being “ignorant” but “not racist” in the letter read by Wright.
