Dominique Alexander met with the families of Talibah Islam and Typhenie Johnson to express his support and encourage the Fort Worth Police Department to continue investigating both cases and also encouraged the FBI and state authorities to get involved. Islam, who is 30, dated Revill for two years, according to her sister, and they have an 11-yearold son. Johnson, who has been missing since October 12, 2016, is 25 and her twin brother, Asher, says he has family that has traveled to Texas to help search for her. No reward has been announced for information about the whereabouts of both women, but Ms. Islam said she will work with the Johnson family and hopefully something will break soon. By Dr. J. Ester Davis Jack Greenberg, a Jewish lawyer who leaded up the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc., for 23 years, died recently. He was 91. The New York Times lauded him as “one of the most powerful white figures in a movement.� I am sure this name sounds familiar to you, especially if you were around during the civil rights era in the 60’s or have read everything you could on the movement, including the struggle for voting rights. Over the years, in this column I have written other articles with this same title. The first legal genius article was about E. Brice

Cunningham, a living legend, who was a partner in one of America’s most prestigious law firms, Finch, Lockridge and Cunningham; and the second article, Judge L. A. Bedford, Dallas’ first black judge (Requiem for a Jurist 1926-2014). These frontier genius’ are so very important to our history and they should not be forgotten or casually tossed aside. I was Brice Cunningham’s legal assistant for three years, modeling part time, and remained a part of the legal world after moving to corporate America. Young attorneys like Sam Hudson, Royce West, Craig Washington, Marcus Ranger and others, came to the firm looking for jobs and advice. These were all black attorneys. The noted attorneys of that day were Joe Lockridge, D. B. Mason, L. Clifford Davis, Fort Worth, Fred Finch, and W. J. Durham. The work was long, abundant, audacious and demanding. W. J. Durham and Thurgood Marshall were classmates, which gets me
back to Jack Greenberg and the Texas connection. The nucleus of the Black legal network in the 60’s was Thurgood Marshall. He collaborated with and delegated the civil rights workload across the country. This generation clearly had a plan with vision, opportunity driven and they worked it. For example, one evening while working late in the office, the phone rang. It was Thurgood Marshall, calling from New York, looking for Brice. The instructions were simple. “Go down to Nacogdoches, Texas, and get so-and-so out of jail.� Jack Greenberg is deemed the last survivor of a renown legendary Civil Rights Legal Team. He is the last surviving member of the original legal team assembled by Thurgood Marshall, the founding director-counsel of the legal defense fund and later the first African American Supreme Court Justice. This team of seven broke down barriers and set examples in the matter of law that are still

researched in law libraries around the globe, with voting rights at the very top. These battles they fought... and won...leaving a legacy of legal battles for people all over the world. Did I mention voting rights? In all, Jack Greenberg was before the Supreme Court in more than 40 civil rights cases. Many prominent attorneys have been a part of the Legal Defense Fund, including Barack Obama, who in one case was co-op attorney on his path to the presidency. When Thurgood Marshall joined the federal bench, he named Jack Greenberg to succeed him as director of the defense fund now up to 25 attorneys. Jack Greenberg found time to write a book about his odyssey entitled “Crusaders in the Courts: How a Dedicated Band of Lawyers Fought for the Civil Rights Revolution.� Is there a second generation at bat?

SMITH: Temperament and consciousness As I sat in Judge Elizabeth Frizell’s courtroom in the Frank Crowley Criminal Court Building, there seemed to be a feeling of excitement, anticipation and even nervousness. Those emotions are not uncommon in courtrooms but today seemed really special. I had heard about Star Court and decided to find out what was really happening. I knew Star Court wasn’t something that was outlined in a judge’s job description and based on what I heard, the many positive things about the Star Court Diversion Program, was worthy of looking into. The program, initiated by Judge Frizell, focuses on some key areas: prostitution, drug rehabilitation and mental health. The Fall 2016 class consisted of four women who had their run-ins with the law. But on this day they were all smiles as they shared their testimonies. Through Star Court these wom-

It’s not a job, more like a ministry. And the world is a better place. If you could have seen the looks on the graduates faces as they were cheered on by their loved ones and given an additional incentive as Judge Frizell waived fines and probation periods. There were tears of joy and looks of pride. Heck, I felt proud of the ladies and their supportive families. In coming weeks, we will share more about the program and its graduates and the great work that Judge Frizell is doing. Here is a judge who truly has the temperament and consciousness!

While America’s “virtues” are being “Trumped” by a loud-mouthed, government subsidized billionaire and his buffoonish behavior, there really is something serious to be considered about the 2016 elections. I received a political mailer from Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price, which made me forget for a scintilla of a second who Donald Trump is. On the forward side, there were several, now deceased former Supreme Court Justices and they were juxtaposed to some of the landmark human rights and civil rights cases they oversaw. Next to these jurists are pictures of the plaintiffs. Just imagine the nine “Scottsboro Boys” who were saved from death row by a court overseen by Chief Justice Charles E. Hughes and court in the same frame and visual reference. To hell with all of that foolishness that flows from Donald Trump’s fountain of unforgivable ignorance and unprecedented insolence. The United States Constitution was created by rich White men for rich White men and the rest of America has the Supreme Court as our only salvation. But rather than offer some grand commentary on what Commissioner Price conjectured in his mail piece, let me share the lesson(s) he taught in a two-sided 8 X 11 glossy.

Samuel L. Brown It is with a heavy heart, I announce the passing of one of the Chamber’s staunchest advocates and Board member Mr. Samuel L. Brown. Throughout his over 30 years of service for the Chamber, he served as Chairman as well as countless other pivotal positions establishing programs and relationships that have stood the test of time. Sam, as he was known, continued to support the organization throughout in immeasurable ways. His leadership and communication demeanor will be missed but his legacy of service and commitment to the Dallas Community at large is profound and provides an example we can all live by. Mr. Brown passed on October 16, 2016. He graduated Cum Laude from Prairie View A&M University in 1964 where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He furthered his education and attended
Southern Methodist University in 1969 where he received his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1976, he pursued his lifelong dream of becoming an entrepreneur and founded BMA Systems, Inc. In 1978, Samuel was initiated into the Theta Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., where he had the distinction of being a Life Member. A civic leader in the community, he was elected Chairman of the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce where he served on the Board of Directors for over 20 years. Samuel is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, O’Shelia Moore; his son, Samuel Darnell (Darnasha) Brown Sr.; grandson, Samuel Darnell Brown, Jr; sister, Glenda Smith Gibson; brothers, Steve Smith and Anthony Brown and mother-in-law, Mrs. Jimmie M. Moore.

Photos by Eva D. Coleman As the 2016 State Fair of Texas slowly came to a conclusion, fair goers have numerous stories to share about their experiences. One of the many stories should include the Night of Inspiration & Gospel Concert held on the Chevy stage on October 20, 2016. Hosted by Keith Solis & Shannon Thomas, Smooth R & B 105.7, this gospel concert brought old and new gospel music together
all on one stage. The event kicked off with the DFW Unity Choir singing and praise dancers using their God given talent through the art of dance. The various artists brought their own unique style of praising the Lord to each song that was sung. Mr. Michael Bethany took the audience to church with his hand-clapping, feet-stomping song “Never Leave Us.” You could not help but get out of your seat and raise your hands in praise with Mr. Bethany’s performance. After rocking and clapping with Mr. Bethany, Ms. Angela Blair comes to the stage
and sings a song my grandmother would have been singing along with her. “For Every Mountain” touched the elders that were in the audience and Ms. Blair’s amazing soprano voice took me to the mountain in praise and worship. Witnessing attendees waving their hands and lifting their eyes to the heavens, her angelic voice touched the spirit of those in attendance.

In between the acts, we cannot overlook the comedic anecdotes from THE Pastor Fred. Pastor Fred reminded me of a deacon in the church that says what’s on his mind in a manner that will have you wondering should you laugh or be offended. When the final act was being introduced, I saw so many young people approaching the stage before his name was announced. Grammy Nominee and multiple Stellar, Dove, and Billboard Music Award Winner Travis Green came to the stage and blessed the souls of all his voice touched. Seeing young people worshiping and praising God always brings a smile to my face. In these times of racial discourse, to see various groups praising God together was a beautiful sight to see. Black/ White, Republican/Democrat, Straight/LGBT felt nonexistent during this brief one-hour concert. The surprise of the evening was a special performance from Tamela Mann! This concert was an inspiration to all those who sat in attendance as well as those who were walking around eating turkey legs and corn dogs, and listening from a far.

Five years into my marriage my husband moved himself into the downstairs bedroom. The initial reason given was, “He didn’t want to disturb the babies” (including a newborn) with his late-night arrival, and early departures for work. Some months later, after a “marriage check-up” with our pastor, he confessed to me out of euphoria! He admitted that he had started smoking, you know; one of those things I never wanted in my life! Smoking is one of those “THINGS,” you know, those things you list as true deal-breakers, with regard to dating and relationships…FROM THE START! He admitted that he knew how strongly I felt about this, but he figured it was no longer a deal-breaker since we are married! On the one hand, I don’t see using this makes me feel as a justification for divorce. On the other hand, I feel betrayed, belittled, devalued, and bullied into being with someone I would NEVER had been with, if given the choice of him as a smoker.

As a non-smoker, what you don’t know is, smoking can be soothing, a stress reliever, it relaxes you. If you’ve never struggled with a compulsion, you just don’t get it. It’s his choice to make. He won’t win unless he’s all in. So, encourage your husband to make up his mind to quit smoking because it’s the healthy thing to do. Remind him you’d like for him to be around a long time for you and the kids, blah, blah, la-dee-da…you know what I’m talkin’ bout. Ask your doctor for brochures and suggested websites to share with him. Tell him you want him back upstairs, now! Yes, you’re right, smoking is a game changer, but you two can commit to get through this. Stop, read that again, I said you two. Handle your husband’s addiction with patience and tolerance. Don’t nag him, offer support. This will take time. I recall a conversation I had with a loved one who had battled a drug problem. During her last days, I asked, “why didn’t you ever just quit?” Her answer, “for every time you think I didn’t, I did times a million.” I assure you he’s trying, that’s what many smokers do, more than you and the rest of us non-smokers will ever know.

UNCF leads National Campaign to promote HBCU Historic Preservation Program
Today UNCF launched #PreserveHBCUs a 24-hour social media campaign to urge the Senate to provide at least $5 million for the HBCU Historic Preservation Program, as passed by the House, before Congress adjourns. Taking place during National Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Week, this day of action engages HBCU alumni, stakeholders and supporters to help preserve over 700 historic buildings on HBCU campuses. “HBCUs have a significant place in American history and provide incredible value and values to minority and lowincome students, and to the communities in which they reside,” said Cheryl Smith, UNCF senior vice president of public policy and government affairs. “The HBCU Historic Preservation Program serves an essential purpose to HBCUs, which have a special place in the fabric of American history, culture and education. We look forward to working with the Senate to ensure final passage before the 114th Congress adjourns.”

No federal funds have been provided since 2009 for the restoration of historic buildings at HBCUs; however, this year there is a chance to secure funding in the FY 2017 budget. Last month, the House unanimously passed H.R. 295, a bill that would re-authorize $10 million annually through 2023 for the HBCUs Historic Preservation Program, and the Clyburn amendment to appropriate $5 million for FY 2017, but no funding has been recommended by the Senate. “Thanks to Congressman James E. Clyburn (D-SC), a proud HBCU alumnus, this important bill is moving one step closer to the finish line, but further action is desperately required,” said UNCF President and CEO, Dr. Mi-
chael Lomax. “HBCUs are indeed national treasures and we invite everyone to join us today in supporting the restoration of more than 700 historic buildings on HBCU campuses.” HBCU historic preservation was a signature UNCF initiative from 1995 through 1999, when UNCF partnered with the National Park Service to support the rehabilitation of historic structures on 10 HBCU campuses. Historic preservation remains a UNCF strategic priority today as several HBCUs this year are celebrating or approaching 150 years of existence. Tyler brings her wealth of knowledge and experience to Dallas in her upcoming casting intensive workshop presented by Inside the Industry Studios on Saturday, November 5th from 10am-3 pm at Homewood Suites, 2747 N.
