MAVs coach looks ahead to season By Dorothy Gentry Texas Metro News Sports Editor
Band and Football Team claimed victories before a reported crowd of 53,182
The Dallas Mavericks’ head coach Rick Carlisle has never been one to mince words. The popular, well-respected coach, now entering his 8th year as head coach, led the team to it’s only NBA Championship in 2011 and last year agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $35 million that begins next year. Carlisle addressed the Mavs ever-changing roster, new additions, owner Mark Cuban and more during the Mavs Media Day Monday at the American Airlines Center. On Harrison Barnes and his role: I spent a good portion of the summer with him; at his basketball camp in Iowa; in Vegas during the Olympics games; here this past moth and he’s a great worker. He’s a guy with a great intellectual curiosity for the game. He’s a different kind of player than what we have had here so I think he is one of the most exciting guys we have brought into this thing in recent years. His skill set and body type is a little bit different. His personality is a little different. We were very fortunate to

Eddie Bernice Johnson Listening to the political messages of this campaign season, many candidates will have you forget just how deep of a hole this country was in eight years ago. You don’t have to go far to hear someone claim “we have to make America great again” or “we need to bring back our jobs from overseas” or any other numerous claims that suggest America is in worse shape than it was before the election of President Barack Obama. Until every able bodied citizen is able to find a job that can allow them to provide for themselves and their family, we will still have work to do. The facts, however, show that our Nation has come a very long way from the dire straits we were in when Barack Obama was elected. If we rewind the clock back eight years, the economic outlook for the country was very bleak. America was embroiled in “the worst financial crisis in global history, including the Great Depression,” according to former Fed chairman Ben Bernanke. The private sector had lost 4.5 million jobs and nearly $13 trillion1* in household wealth was eliminated in the Please see AMERICA, page 2

This is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. One victim of violence is one too many. IWe must continue to call attention to behavior that has led to so many deaths. Males and females must keep their hands under control. Do NOT resort to violence is the message. People have to learn how to get along or get away from one another. receive even a 10-year pin, let alone a 25-year watch or 50-year trinket of some type. I’ve also heard similar stories about marriage. People get tired at the first sign of adversity. They get goingwhile the going is good for them. For many to survive five years is a monumental feat. When couples made those vows, they had no idea what they were facing. I’ve heard it gets tough. No shade here. I just want to shine a spotlight on some special people. This year, I happen to know of five couples who are celebrating

What a joy to hear that there are men and women who worked it out, overcame the obstacles and faced the challenges; all the while growing together to form a solid, spiritual, uplifting foundation. These are the type of relationships showcased by Anthem Strong Families and founder of Black Marriage Day and the Wedded Bliss Foundation, Nisa Muhammad. the family says it has more questions than answers. Allowing others to see the tape will likely raise more questions, but it will also close the trust gap. Failing to release the full video suggests that the Charlotte police have something to hide. Releasing tape snippets seems like appeasement, like the drip, drip, drip of the police trying to make a case. The North Carolina NAACP, the ACLU, and many others have called for release of the all the tape, but the police chief has dug his heels in. Does he have something in common with Rahm Emmanuel, the Chicago mayor who clamed there was nothing to hide on the Laquan McDonald tapes. They were released more than a year after his murder, and they contradicted the police version of his killing. We didn’t have the luxury of tape during enslavement, yet we know that horrors were visited on black people. Slave owner journals, along with some of the implements of torture that have been discovered (and may be displayed in our new Museum) document the horrors, but imagine having tape of it. We don’t have tape of lynching, although there are pictures of those lynched, though they are conspicuously absent in many history books. We don’t have tapes of Rosewood or of the evisceration of Black Wall Street.
Indeed, the carnage that economically envious whites visited on a successful African American community is so shameful that white Tulsans have attempted to erase the record of their cowardly acts – the newspaper articles that recounted white cowardice went missing decades ago. We don’t have tape of the police brutality that caused so many black deaths in the early and mid twentieth century. We know the brutality existed, and we know police officers were never charged “back in the day for killing or torturing Black people. The fact that we didn’t have tape then contributes to the urgency that we get tape now. I don’t know what the tape shows, but I know that I don’t want to leave it to my imagination, and I don’t want a minute here, two minutes there, when we know cameras should have been running for much longer. When another black man is shot and killed and the police version is that he had a gun, the public deserves to see if the tape backs that version up. If there is a video record of a police interaction with an African American, it ought to be released, and it ought not to be edited. Failure to do so fuels the anger that spilled over onto Charlotte streets on the evenings of September 20 and 21. Once the family saw the tapes and shared their concerns, people
were back on the streets on September 22, but they were peaceful, and the atmosphere was much less tense than it had been. There is a marked contrast between the behavior of the police establishment in Tulsa and that in Charlotte. In Tulsa, videotape was released just a couple of days after Officer Betty Shelby shot Terence Crutcher. Not a week had passed before the officer was charged with first-degree manslaughter, based on what prosecutors saw on the tapes. People in Tulsa have been outraged, but peaceful. People in Charlotte feel outraged, but also hurt and betrayed. It is interesting that Rykeyia Scott keeps telling the police that her husband has no weapon, even as the police keep insisting that he drop the gun. Is this a set up? An Amadou Diallo moment (when a wallet was mistaken for a gun)? Something else. There is a compelling reason to release all, not just snippets, of the tape of Kevin Scott’s killing. It is an opportunity to build trust and to show that the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have nothing to hide from those they are sworn to “serve and protect. Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. HALL: Frienemies Don’t Play!
By Vincent Hall Whodini, a Brooklyn based, 80’s rap group asked a now famous question you may recall. Their 1984 hit asked; “Friends, how many of us have them, friends, the kind we can depend on?” A new stage play due to rock Dallas, appropriately named “Frienemies,” seeks to remind us how rare real friendship is. Your personal accounting of friends is bound to be shorter than the list of Frienemies you’ve enlisted over the years. Director/ playwright “Snoop” Robinson proffers this wisdom; “You need to keep your friends close and your Frienemies closer.” Chrystale Wilson, who was the poster girl for Frienemies in her iconic role as “Ronnie in Ice Cube’s film; “Player’s Club” will lead the headliners of this spellbinder. Frienemies also features several local celebrities and budding thespians. Local Judge Shequitta Kelly, former Assistant District Attorney Heath Harris and Abeni Jewel are named among those who will cast their stars on the stage. Life comes with tragedies and unexpected disasters within close friendships. Frienemies
is an exciting, hard-turning stage play that reveals how selfish intentions and willful treachery transform former friends into eternal enemies. Ok, I get it. You don’t quite get the concept of Frienemies which is what linguists call a portmanteau, so here’s an example. So you found a friend, say his name is Ronald Hump. Hump says that he wants to save you from your poverty-stricken neighborhoods and horrible Third World conditions. Hump says your schools are bad, you are getting shot in the streets and “Your people” are doing worse now than you were in chattel slavery and Jim Crow laws. Hump begs your indulgence; “What do you have to lose…Vote Ronald Hump…I can fix it.” But then you realize that Ronald Hump didn’t care to befriend you. Hump was actually trying to become better friends with some people who didn’t like him because he
doesn’t like you. The moral is that Frienemies like Ronald Hump are dangerous and deserve your close scrutiny. Anyway… Frienemies’ main character Tracey helps her so called “best friend” get a job within the company she works for. That’s what friends do right? However, Tracey is unaware her “Bestie” has personal goals of her own and she is willing to do whatever and whomever it takes to achieve her covert mission. Frienemies is a very important stage play for several reasons. First and foremost, the message is old and trite, but one that most of us never learn. The second point of significance is that Dallas’ arts community is much deeper and more abundant than it ever gets credit for.
5
There are some major theatrical producers, musicians and visual artists in this city, and the truth is…we do not support our own. In February 2011, Dallas’ Snoop Robinson produced and directed, “She’s Not Our Sister,” the stage play, which sold out on opening night and was later readapted and showcased in film on The Gospel Music Channel. Snoop’s latest film “Her Eyez,” received the 2015 Excellence Award for Best Film of the Year during the Diamondnique Productions Playwrights Awards Gala. Of the dozen works he has produced are titles like “Bold Evil Liar,” “Snoop Robinson’s Sinful Confessions,” and “Racial Conscience.” Snoop plans to take Frienemies to the “C-Market,” or what we used to call the chittlin’ circuit. This strategy is emblematic of the dedication and work ethic that makes him a tireless perfectionist and an up and coming star. Actors Raison Thompson, Alexandria Warfield, Brandon Armstead, China Mitchell, Kenny Garner, Andre Terry, LeTitia Owens, and Nae Callihan round out his cast. You don’t want to miss Frienemies, because you have enough enemies already. Support folks in your community…for a change!!! Whodini posed the question, but the answer is yours.
What the Kaepernick Protest Tells Us about Black Power Blackonomics By James Clingman
NNPA Newswire Columnist
Turnabout is fair play. Why can’t more of us see that economics is the key to our freedom and the answer to the problems we talk about all the time? This political year has and continues to bring this fact to light, but the Colin Kaepernick protest illuminates the issue of economics even more. Here is a guy who chose to exercise his right not to stand at the playing/singing of the National Anthem, and as a result folks have called him everything, but a child of God. Folks who have burned the flag have not received the kind of treatment Kaepernick has garnered. Now, as other football players have joined in to do similar acts of protest, the real deal— economics—comes to the forefront. Sponsors are exercising their rights to revoke their endorsements of these athletes. In other words, they are taking away their money in an effort to punish these players, the same thing they always do when a player says or does something they don’t like or agree with. It has happened to Black and White players alike.
Opinions abound on what the players should do now, and it’s amazing that some of us tell them to keep it up no matter how much money they lose, but we are unwilling to do the same thing at our jobs. Yes, they make a whole lot more money than most of us do, but it’s all relative. Knowing that economics runs everything in this country and the world for that matter, Black folks in general and Black athletes in particular must exercise another basic right: Use money for leverage and punishment, the same way other entities do. What do I mean by that? Remember the incidents with Michael Vick, Adrian Peterson and Ray Rice? Several NFL sponsors notified the league that they would withdraw their support if the NFL did not address those issues by punishing those athletes in some form or another. The league saw dollar signs flying out of the window and acted accordingly. Remember the state of Indiana law that gay people said was discriminatory toward them? Corporations threatened to move their firms out of the state if the law was not changed. Governor Mike Pence took care of that problem right away by changing the law. How about the latest issue in North Carolina with the transgender bathroom thing? The NCAA is sanctioning the state by pulling its tournaments, in all sports, out of North Carolina. The
NBA has also refused to hold the All-Star game there. That’s money talking and Black folks better take notice and start using our economic clout to get what we want. Do you remember Craig Hodges, who played for the Chicago Bulls? He filed a federal lawsuit, against the NBA accusing the owners and operators of the NBA as co-conspirators in ”blackballing” him from the league because of his “outspoken political nature as an African-American man.” When the Bulls championship team went to the White House after an invitation from President George H.W. Bush, Hodges wore a dashiki and handed the President a letter that asked him to do more to end injustice toward the African-American community. Sound familiar? ”It’s well known through the league that there may be repercussions if you speak out too strongly on some sensitive issues,” said Buck Williams, head of the players association at that time. “I don’t know if Hodges lost his job because of it, but it is a burden when you carry the militant label he has.” Ironically and unfairly, during that same period, stars like Dennis Rodman and Charles Barkley, both known for doing outrageous things, were tolerated and even celebrated. Craig Hodges stood on his beliefs as did Denver Nuggets star, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf,
formerly known as Chris Jackson, who was probably second only to Michael Jordan on the offensive end of the basketball court. Long before Kaepernick, Abdul-Rauf refused to stand for the National Anthem, and when he did, he prayed. This outstanding NBA player converted to Islam and soon after his conversion his NBA career came to a screeching halt. Both Hodges and Abdul-Rauf were vilified and sanctioned by the NBA for having the courage to stay true to their social, religious, and ethical convictions. Unfortunately, they stood alone for the most part. Their teammates and even the great Elgin Baylor turned their backs on him. I call that cowardly. If just half of the Black players in the NBA and the NFL would do as the University of Missouri players did, refuse to play just two games back to back, they would change those leagues. Money rules. Of course, it takes sacrifice, but isn’t it worth it? Hodges and Abdul-Rauf did, and they lost a great deal for their willingness to take a stand. They stood alone; a critical mass of Black athletes, standing together can win. Former Editor of the Cincinnati Herald Newspaper, James Clingman is the founder of the Greater Cincinnati African American Chamber of Commerce.

Elite White Entitlement is dangerous
Editor’s Note: Recently members of the Southern Methodist University Band decided to kneel during the playing of the national anthem at a football game to focus attention on the violence that Black men especially are being subjected to. An SMU alum wrote a scathing letter condemning the actions of the students. There’s so much to talk about as emotions are varied. In the wake of the vocal stance that professional athlete Colin Kaepernick has taken, calling attention to the hypocrisy of the national anthem and refusing to stand while the song is played; a teacher at North Springs Charter School in George was sent home because she stood with students who were attempting to observe five minutes of silence in support of Black Lives Matter, The Volleyball team at DeSoto High School knelt prior to a game, and rumors began circulating that administrators at Cedar Hill (TX) High School forbade athletes to participate in any form of “disrespect” toward the anthem.
Here are some other viewpoints:
By Devean R. Owens Five brave band students, along with others in the student section, at my alma mater decided to “stand up” for what they believe in at an SMU football game last weekend. They knew going in that they would experience a great deal of backlash but also knew that in the end their courageous act was vital seeing that two unarmed Black men were murdered by police officers earlier that week.
James Hairston ’83 decided to express his first amendment right by voicing his opinion on the issue. What I find ironic is the fact that the students he wants to see removed from the band were expressing their same INALIENABLE first amendment right – free speech. Hairston obviously missed the memo from SMU stating, “The strength of a great university is reflected in its commitment to the broad exchange of ideas and philosophies. SMU respects the diversity of opinions within the University and supports the right of free expression for each member of its campus community.” Becoming a member of a community, club, or organization does not automatically negate your rights as an American citizen. Affiliations are only part of who you are as a person, they do not define you. Hairston’s oped is a prime example of the culture that is SMU. Instead of accepting the position of the university, he decides to use his money and title to threaten the university (not uncommon at SMU) by stating, “We have students, parents, and donors who look at SMU as a place to send their children, invest
their resources to help continue to educate students and Alums - proud of their school - who I feel were disrespected by the band members in a public and humiliating fashion.” I, as a two time alumna, am not disrespected and certainly not humiliated. I feel great pride and joy that the passion and fire for justice is still alive and well within an atmosphere that continuously tries to extinguish it. I’m not quite sure who gave Hairston the right to speak for all SMU alumni but if I had to guess, it was probably his white male privilege. “These members, as individuals, can exercise their free speech at any time, in their space – not affiliated with SMU at any time. But, during the National Anthem or anytime they are representing SMU, in any capacity, this is unacceptable.” Any time you tell someone where, when, and how to express their “free speech”…it’s not actually free speech, right? As an undergraduate student, when we were protesting blatantly racist and threatening comments on social media, everyone told us it was free speech. Do we not have the same rights?
SMU has and continues to breed a culture of toxic white hegemony that detrimentally affects marginalized students on a daily basis. Any time students begin to speak out against the injustices they encounter on campus, in their organizations, in the residence halls, in the classroom; they are silenced and shut down. This has been a recurring cycle since Black students integrated the university in the ‘60s. The combination of racism and classism suffocates students of color who have just as much right to be there as their white counterparts. As an alumna, I want to see SMU become a more inclusive place for students of color, students with disabilities, LGBTQ students, female students, low SES students...these changes can only begin by dismantling the systemic barriers and toxic culture that continues to permeate the Boulevard.

Our reality: Being Black in America By Micaela Watkins When I heard the news regarding the death of Terence Crutcher last week, I once again broke down in tears. To a few, this is just another hashtag that will come and go. To some, it is another story in which the egregious actions of an officer were acceptable, or even necessary. But to so many of us, it is a reminder. It is a reminder that our safety is not guaranteed. It is a reminder as to why so many, ranging from Colin Kaepernick to the five outstanding members of the Mustang band, have taken a knee to stand against injustice. Less than 24 hours into mourning the death of Mr. Crutcher, we hear of the death of Keith Lamont Scott. At this point, it almost feels as if being Black in America has fixated a target on our backs. When five members of the Mustang Band made the brave decision to take a knee, I’m sure they knew the potential for backlash was imminent. The unfortunate reality of this situation is that so many people have either failed to see the true meaning of this silent protest, or they acknowledge and knowingly ignore it. The fact that Colin Kaepernick took a knee and has been called the N word and had his life threatened, is proof that this problem exists. When the Mustang Band 5 chose to take a knee, and subsequently, people like James Hairston believe they should be removed from the band - and others believe expulsion is due - it is proof that this problem exists.
that you may see us and see our pain. We kneel in hopes that you may one day stand up, and fight with us side by side, to make justice our new reality and love overcome hate. Micaela S. Watkins is a 28 year old native of Fort Worth, Texas. She attained her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Southern Methodist University in 2011. While at SMU, she was the captain of the nationally ranked Mock Trial team, and active with the Association of Black Students as well as Voices of Inspiration Gospel Choir. During her undergraduate career, she had the honor of interning for then State Representative, and current Congressman, Marc Veasey. She is the reigning Ms. Black America CoEd and works professionally as an appraiser and business tax analyst. The DeSoto High School volleyball team knelt during the National Anthem prior to their game recently. The teammates were supported by their coach, school board trustee president Carl Sherman and other community leaders.
This silent protest, like Black Lives Matter, is not anti-police, it does not promote or condone violence, and it is not anti-American. This silent protest is a cry of a broken, betrayed, and hurt community. This protest is a peaceful plea for justice.. We, too, are Americans and we are asking our fellow Americans to see our tear-filled eyes, empathize with our pain, and help us in restoring justice. No one deserves to live in fear the way I and so many other African Americans do. My challenge for all who are so blatantly opposed to kneeling during the National Anthem is to take a moment to practice understanding. Take a moment to try grasping the mindset of the downtrodden. How must it feel to say, “stop shooting us” and be met with a response that begins with “but?” How must it feel to literally live in fear-
for yourself and your loved ones? The truth is, that is not everyone’s reality but it is mine. I am a proud graduate of Southern Methodist University and I was even blessed to study at Oxford University. But my reality is: before some may even know that, they will only see that I am a Black woman. We do not kneel in an effort to disrespect our country or any of our servicemen and servicewomen. We kneel in hopes

Ask Alma: by Alma Gill
NNPA News Wire Columnist Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and Twitter @almaaskalma. Dear Alma,
My stepson, who I adore and have known most of his life, is getting married next summer. I love him and love the girl he is getting married to. Here is my problem. There is bad blood between his mother and me. I tried for years to get along with her and even acted as a buffer between her and my husband on many occasions. I did this to the point of causing myself anxiety because I just wanted everyone to get along so badly. About three or four years ago, after being married to my stepson’s father for almost 17 years, I snapped. I lost my temper with her; there was a very ugly scene that even took place in a courtroom in front of a judge. It was something I will never forget. I haven’t spoken to this woman since. When my stepson visits, he shares comments that she continues to make about me to this day. I don’t engage at all. I will not let him hear me bash his mother in any way. If this was any other woman, I would be out for blood, but I realize that the people who would get hurt are my stepsons, who I love so, I suppress my anger. But back to why I’m writing: How do I attend this wedding with a woman that I know does not hesitate to start fights, regardless of who is around. She will be surrounded by her very large family, and I will basically be there with a small handful of my family members. I will be outnumbered. And did I mention that I am estranged from my husband, too? That I’m not so worried about, but it still causes tension. And, Alma, where do I sit?
Jackie B., South Carolina
OMG Jackie,
Sounds like you’ve already lived through one Jerry Springer moment, and you don’t want to participate in another. I don’t blame you, girl; it can suck the life right out of you. Congratulations on the upcoming wedding of your step-son, and congratulations to you for loving him unconditionally. The one-on-one relationship between the two of you is special, and that’s how it should be. Step-parents are an extension of original parents. A relationship with step-children cannot be defined by the relationship you have with the original parent. Once you commit as a step-parent, you commit to that child for life. Now, back to your dilemma. I applaud you for taking the high road, which most times, as you know, is the road less traveled. The high road can be a lonely place…it’s usually not where you find the fist bumps, the I-got-yourbacks or the you-go-girl road signs. Now here’s where my advice gets a little tricky — I want you to stay on that road. It’s great that your step-son
Texas Voters: Get the facts about Voter ID law By Texas Secretary of State Carlos Cascos
Voting helps determine the future of our cities, counties, state, and nation. As the Texas Secretary of State, I am the is able to include you and wants you state’s chief election officer to be a part of this most special occa- charged with ensuring all elsion. But you need to lay back. You know how there are different igible Texans know what they levels of guests at a wedding? You need to do to cast their ballots. have the “family” guest, the “really good friends” guest and the “friends from work” guest. For that day, I’d like you to participate as a “friends from work“ guest. I say that because, from what I read in your letter, there’s a chance for Jerry Springer – Round 2 moment, and you certainly don’t want that to happen. I’m a step-mother, so I’m not asking you to do anything I wouldn’t do. I love my step-daughter, TaKisha, with all my heart. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for her, so I sympathize with your situation. There was a moment in our lives when I had to take a step back. I took the high road. I took the blame and all that extra madness that comes along with it. Yes, it broke my heart. Yes, it made me sad, but those are the yield signs along the way on the high road. Be mindful, be guideful (is that a word? LOL). What I’m trying to say is, you can control this. You know the rituals of a wedding. They’re all basically the same. I’d suggest you arrive on time, sit down with five minutes to spare. And since you asked, sit five rows behind his mother. You don’t need to get there early and stand outside with the smokers checking everything out. Take your seat, smile, and shut your mouth. Don’t chime in about anything, not the wedding colors, the bridesmaid dresses, the soloist — nothing. Remember, you’re on the high road. Once the couple exits, smile, smile, hug, hug and go get in your car. Make your way to the reception. Walk in and find your seat. I’m sure they’ve made appropriate arrangement for the reception seating. If not, since you asked, sit on the opposite end of the hall from her. You don’t have to be seen. You don’t have to be all up in the middle of the mix, and you shouldn’t. He has a mother and a father. Both, I’m assuming, will be front and center at the celebration. You’re no longer with his father and you don’t want to throw down with his mother, so step back. Repeat it with me: “I’m taking the high road.” If she heads in your direction with some foolishness, that’s your cue to leave. Please, please don’t engage this woman, no matter what. If tensions run high and things get out of hand, take a deep breath, grit your teeth and keep it moving – down the high road!

My office has undertaken a statewide voter education campaign engaging voters and working to ensure that all qualified voters in Texas understand what they need to bring to the polls in order to vote in ongoing and upcoming elections. If a voter possesses a form of approved photo ID, the voter must use it to vote. Currently, there are seven forms of acceptable photo ID in Texas: • Texas driver license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) • Texas personal identification card issued by DPS • Texas License to Carry a Handgun issued by DPS • Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS • U.S. passport • U.S. citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph • U.S. military identification card containing the person’s photograph With the exception of the U.S. citizenship certificate, the approved photo ID must be current or have expired no more than four years before being presented for voter qualification at the polling place. If the voter has continued access to their acceptable form of photo ID, but, for example, forgets to bring it to the polling place and/or leaves it, for example, at home or in their car, the voter still possesses the acceptable form of photo ID and must use it to vote. If the voter does not possess and cannot reasonably obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, the voter has additional options when casting their ballot in person. As provided by court order, if a voter does not possess and is not reasonably able to obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, the voter may vote by (1) signing a declaration at the polls explaining why the voter is reasonably unable to obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, and (2) providing one of various forms of supporting documentation. A voter whose photo identification has been lost, stolen, suspended, revoked or expired more than
four years does not possess one of the acceptable forms of photo ID, and, if the voter cannot reasonably obtain a replacement of the identification that was lost, stolen, suspended, revoked or expired or another form of acceptable photo ID, the voter is eligible to present a supporting form of identification, execute a Reasonable Impediment Declaration, and, assuming they otherwise qualify, vote a regular ballot. Supporting documentation can be a certified birth certificate (must be an original), a valid voter registration certificate, a copy or original of one of the following: current utility bill, bank statement, government check, or paycheck, or other government document that shows the voter’s name and an address. Government documents that include a photo must be original and cannot be copies. If a voter meets these requirements and is otherwise eligible to vote, the voter will be able to cast a regular ballot in the election. Voters with a disability may continue to apply with the county registrar for a permanent exemption to showing approved photo ID (which now may be expired no more than four years) at the polls. Also, voters who (1) have a consistent religious objections to being photographed or (2) do not present one of the seven forms of approved photo ID because of certain natural disasters as declared by the President of the United States or the Texas Governor, may continue apply for a temporary exemption to showing approved photo ID at the polls. In addition, voters age 65 or older, those with a disability, or those who will be out of the county during both early voting and Election Day may vote by mail. The deadline to request a ballot by mail is Oct. 28. The General Election is Nov. 8. Early voting runs from Oct. 24 to Nov. 4. The last day to register for the election is Oct. 11. I am currently traveling throughout Texas to talk as part of a non-partisan, bilingual voter education campaign called Vote Texas. This campaign seeks to ensure all voters in all communities understand when, where, and how to vote. Vote Texas is reaching, among others, voters in urban and rural communities, senior citizens, first time voters, military members, and minority groups. My team and I are committed to reaching the voters of our great state. For more information regarding voting requirements and voter ID, please visit VoteTexas.gov or call 1-800-252-VOTE.

Profile Summary and why it is important Here is where we address the most common issues regarding resumes. From time to time there will be an article written on trends concerning the resume, as well as articles pertaining to resumes and interviews. Now that you know you need to have a resume and what it is for. After listing the job title you are applying for, this week I will address the Profile Summary. Some of the most commonly used names is Objective Statement, Summary, Profile Statement, Professional Summary, Executive Summary or Summary of Qualifications. Objective Statements have pretty much gone away and aren’t used anymore. Let’s take a look inside the Profile Summary and why do you have to have it. The Profile Summary is where you connect your personality, with the mission and vision of the company you are applying for along with the position. You will need to look at the job description to see what type of person they are looking to hire. This is where you really let your greatest strengths in this role shine through, and should be highlighted here. You need to also state the number of years of experience; I like to do it this way. If the job description calls for 5 years of experience and you have 7 years of experience; I like to list, the years of experience as 5+ years of experience. I am doing this because once the computer scans your resume, it will highlight it and won’t throw it out. The computer has an applicant tracking system on it and will highlight those words in the job description along with keywords. Thus, the reason for looking at the job description and looking at the mission and vision of the company you are applying to. Humble is as Humble Does Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington
I went to church a while back intent on hearing the message from a particular preacher only to find him missing in action. The guest minister’s sermon on humility was a stark reminder that it’s all about the message and not necessarily the messenger. Fortunately for me, that was one of the enlightening moments when I came to Christ that oddly enough, was a key principle taught by the preacher I was set on hearing that Sunday. Again, my life now, I don’t believe in chance and coincidences. Humility as preached on this day was to be looked upon with Philippians 2 as the backdrop. That entire chapter is devoted to Paul’s message to the church at Philippi regarding the effort to “imitate Christ’s humility.” As I listened humility went somewhat uncomfortably from a docile concept of passive behavior to a clear fact and demonstration of power and strength rooted in faith. It was made crystal clear that Christ chose to consider Himself at best equal to, if not lesser than His fellow man. That’s you and me. The “ah-ha” moment comes when you recognize this is God we’re talking about. He consciously chose to make himself human in order to serve His divine purpose. The text tells us to “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Now my recollection of Christ says that a
pretty good description of how He looked at His duty is pretty much what got Him killed. I mean has anyone else noticed that the most dangerous, therefore the most powerful and important thing you can do in life is to care about someone else more than you care about yourself? You see this humility thing does indeed have teeth. Paul teaches us that it is our fundamental responsibility as Christians, to be united in our effort to emulate Jesus’ denunciation of status, pride, ego and self. Surely if anyone one a right to be arrogant, it was the living Son of God. Think about it. You try being the walking talking Word and deliberately transform yourself into a mere mortal. Become Christ and die willingly at the hands of men. Now don’t spend too much time on this because you couldn’t do it. Fortunately Paul, as the minister made clear, is not asking you or me to do the impossible. However, he made it plain enough that our Christian goal should be service unto man. Put a lid on what we think of ourselves and prideful independence in favor of a collective interdependence upon each other and the Almighty. Christ died to save us all here in Philippi. Paul tells us that our conduct must be rooted in the following truth. Out of this thing called humility, Christ saved the world. Are we better than Him? Think it through. If you’ve looked down your nose at anyone for any reason, if you really think you’re better than someone else, then you think you’re better than Jesus; who thought Himself no better and even less than you. He died in service to us, you and me. Do something good for someone else today simply because you can. If you don’t get this or refuse to… May God bless and keep you always.

DALLAS MAVERICKS HIRE IN-ARENA DJ
DJ Poizon Ivy
The Dallas Mavericks have hired a new member of the in-arena entertainment team: DJ Poizon Ivy. Born Ivy Awino in Nairobi, Kenya, and raised in Dallas, Texas, Ivy attended The Hockaday School and worked as a Mavs BallKid on game-nights for over six years. “I grew-up with the Mavs and I’m a
huge fan,” Ivy says. “Somehow I always knew I’d be back and I’m honored to start working for this organization again.” While attending Marquette University, she found her place at WMUR, the student-run radio station and became “DJ Poizon Ivy.” Since then, she’s shared the stage with the likes of Nas, Wiz Khalifa, Lupe Fiasco, B.o.B, J. Cole, Juicy J and more, always striving to learn and work with the best in the industry. Now back in Dallas, Ivy has become the official DJ of the Dallas Wings (WNBA) and Skylar Diggins’ Shoot 4 the Sky Basketball Camp Tour. “We were looking for someone who knows and lives for basketball, but also has an ear for what’s happening in the music world. We believe she is going to elevate our in-game experience and we’re excited to have her on board,” said Jonathan Kornblith, Creative and Game-Day Director. DJ Poizon Ivy’s first game was October 3rd (preseason) versus the Charlotte Hornets.

MAVs
continued from page one
be able to land him here. He’s a guy that can play two positions easily on offense. He can guard more positions than that on defense. His defensive ability and also his rebounding ability are two things that we will really depend on. On possible roles: Carlisle added that Barnes will play some at the 4 with Justin Anderson at the 3, Wes Matthews at the 2. We’ve got a group that can switch and do some things and give us some flexibility. Powell is another guy we will add in there. We have some interesting options on the defensive end. We will look to develop those as we go. On Mavs Owner Mark Cuban and whether his involvement in current events including the presidential election is a distraction: No, he is not a distraction. One of the things I told the team, especially our new guys, is that one of my desires on a day-to-day basis especially during the season is to have Mark around the team as much as possible. It’s become more impossible because now he’s become a big TV star with Shark Tank and everyone wants them on their news show and want to get his opinion on things. But I don’t look at things as a distraction. We have an owner here who cares and I want him to see what’s going on every single day. On the Mavs’ youthful roster and if it changes the way he coaches or approaches the team: We are excited. We have some younger guys who have a good chance to make this team. There is going to be a lot of competition in training camp. Player development has been a big emphasis for us every since I got here and it’s getting to a greater crescendo
WWW.TEXASMETRONEWS.COM every year. With the way the CBA is, you’ve got to develop your young players. So I don’t think it’s going to be any different but we are always vigilant about techniques and helping guys develop. Whether it’s on video, or on court things, whatever. On turnover of players: We love it. What’s more exciting than getting 7 new guys? New blood. It’s fresh every year. You look at it a couple of different ways. You can view it as a negative and if you do, it’s a pretty good chance its going to be a negative. I don’t see it that way. I think it’s exciting. I love the challenge. I always love getting to know new players because I learn things from our new guys. On Wesley Matthews’s comeback: I know he is excited. Being at a100 percent health would help anybody. I stayed in contact with him all summer. He’s been waiting for this for a long time. He’s one of the best competitors we have in our sport and having a guy like that on your team is something I am excited about. On Mavs’ formula for winning: One of the realities with our team is, if we get 5 or 6 guys averaging double figures, that will be our best chance to win. Guys having real huge, individual scoring bits doesn’t translate to us into having the best chance to win. On Andrew Bogut and his playing time: He had around a 20-minute threshold last year. Is this where he belongs now? I don’t know what his minutes will be. There is a strong possibility he will play more than that for us. But we will have to see how things develop. Health always plays into it. He had a big summer with playing in the Olympics, etc. I know he is feeling better so his health is not in question. But a guy like him that’s 32, been around the league for a while and has had a busy summer traveling, we are going to bring him along at the right place and pace and allow him to work into this thing the right
