Positive Breathing, a community health organization focused on addressing the needs of asthma patients, has launched a fundraising campaign to secure Shammara Norris $25,000 needed to Positive Breathing transform a charter bus into a mobile clinic to bring services directly to children with asthma. Actor Marc Anthony Samuel of ABC television’s General Hospital has joined the campaign and will star in a series of public service announcements. Founded in 2011 by Daydrick and Shammara Norris, Positive Breathing serves the DallasFort Worth metropolis by helping children, families, and caregivers learn about and manage asthma. Through partnerships, the organization offers free testing and supplies for people in the community. “Asthma occurs at a disproportionally higher rate among some ethnic groups, especially African-Americans,” said Shammara Norris. “African-American children in some areas are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with asthma. We are pleased President Obama recently signed the new EpiPen Law that will protect children with asthma and severe allergies.” According to the American Lung Association, more than 25.9 million Americans have asthma including 7.1 million children. Of those children, more than 4.1 million had an asthma attack within the year. Mr. Norris, a registered nurse and caseworker, was a medic serving ambulances, emergency rooms, and fire departments for 12 years. Mrs. Norris was a respiratory therapist specializing in adult care, who changed her focused to children in 2007. One of their biggest concerns is asthma medication containing heavy amounts of steroids. When given constantly to children, these drugs can lead to weight gain and increase the risk of diabetes. Positive Breathing hopes the mobile clinic will help monitor these health issues and others. “The mobile clinic will provide free treatment and screening for asthmatics, asthma education and management and follow up care,” said Shammara Norris. “We’ve served about 550 students this year. Once we become mobile, we’ll be able to serve more.” Positive Breathing Organization recently purchased a charter bus and announced a capital campaign to raise $25,000 to transform it into a mobile clinic. powerful session entitled, “Breaking Business Barriers. Last month’s discussion and Q&A with Karen Parkhill, Vice Chairman and CFO of Comerica Incorporated brought together professionals and 34 students from local colleges for a roundtable discussion/breakfast presented by Comerica Bank in partnership with the DFW Chapter of National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). Now Karen L. Parkhill’s story is one worth sharing. As the Vice Chairman and CFO of Comerica, Ms. Parkhill has traveled a path filled with strong messages and lessons that have helped sustain her and her family over the years. She comes from humble beginnings and in hearing how she has become one of the top female executives in the country; one can‘t help but be inspired and hopeful that the future will be much brighter for more women as they attempt to climb the corporate ladder.

Even today she says she finds herself the only female in rooms with powerbrokers and she advocates for diversity, encouraging the hiring of women and building ethnically diverse teams. “One of my passions is to have diversity,” she explained. “I don’t want to be the only one in the room!” A member of Comerica’s Management Policy Committee and the Comerica Bank Board of Directors, Ms. Parkhill, talked about her hero, her father, who she said wanted a better and different life than the one he had growing up.

Her father was the eldest of five and his father was an alcoholic and very abusive, she said. “He couldn’t hold a job, couldn’t pay the rent and barely put food on the table,” she continued. “The family lived in a three-room shack with rats and the majority of my dad’s childhood stories are so painful that he rarely talked about them.” One thing he did talk about, however, was the importance of a strong education and he led by example, by working hard and eventually becoming a “highly-respected” orthopedic surgeon while also helping his

Catholic in Springfield, IL; she also thought that she would one day be a “veterinarian, missionary and a saint,” but that wasn’t the case. Instead her career began as an analyst at a boutique investment bank in Dallas. From there she returned to her alma mater, Southern Methodist University (SMU) for her MBA and then her next step was joining JP Morgan as an investment banker. At JP Morgan is where she said she “grew up,” moving from Associate to Vice President to Managing Director, all during various mergers with Chase and then Bank One. She joined Comerica in August 2011 and shortly thereafter assumed the role of CFO, with direct management of finance, including accounting business finance, investor relations, treasury and economics. New report examines impact of credit card debt African Americans face unique financial strain and suffer more negative consequences than other groups from their credit card debt, according to a new report from Demos and the NAACP. Having experienced the greatest economic losses and highest unemployment rates of any group in the wake of the Great Recession, the research illustrates ways in which the current economic difficulties of African American households are compounded even further by a legacy of discriminatory policies that have left African Americans with significantly fewer assets and lower rates of homeownership than white households.

Drawing from Demos’ National Survey on Credit Card Debt of Low- and Middle-Income Households, this new research shows that despite owing less today than in 2008, 42 percent of indebted African American households are borrowing to make ends meet, relying on credit cards as a “plastic safety net” to supplement earnings and pay for basic living expenses such as rent, groceries and utilities. Like the American middle class as a whole, African Americans also use credit cards to make critical investments in their future including higher education, entrepreneurship, and medical expenses. Nearly all of the African

American respondents in the survey who accumulated credit card debt from costs associated with starting new businesses have reported difficulties paying down these debts – 99 percent of African American households still carry that expense compared to 80 percent of whites. The African American middle class reports worse credit scores and vastly different causes of poor credit, with just two-thirds of households identifying a score of 620 or above, compared to 85 percent of white households. Among those reporting poor credit, African Americans were more likely to cite late student loan payments and

errors in their credit reports as contributing factors. “Much of the disproportionate impact of credit card debt can be attributed to the fact that African Americans have fewer assets than other households to fall back on in emergencies,” said Catherine Ruetschlin, report co-author and Demos Policy Analyst. “Unlike white households, more than half of African Americans’ wealth is held in housing, which was devastated in the financial crisis. We’re also seeing African Americans turning to credit cards to cover their household finances as incomes continue to stagnate and unemployment rates hover around twice that of white workers.”

Community plans to conduct fundraisers to cover the cost. This temple will be termed as Adhamottamam (Best of the least), reports suggest. Texas already has dozens of Hindu temples. Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, said that it was important to pass on Hindu spirituality, concepts and traditions to coming generations amidst so many distractions in the consumerist society and hoped that this temple complex would focus in this direction. Zed stressed that instead of running after materialism; we should focus on inner search and realization of Self and work towards achieving moksh (liberation), which was the goal of Hinduism. Washington, D.C. – Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX), Chairman of the Joint Economic Committee, today released the following statement in regards to allegations concerning the Bureau of the Census: “I am troubled by allegations that one or more individuals at the Bureau of the Census may have falsified input data for the monthly Current Population Survey. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) uses data from this survey to calculate national, state, and local employment and unemployment statistics. The private sector, as well as the Congress, relies on the accuracy and integrity of these statistics to make important economic decisions. A number of congressional committees, including the Joint Economic Committee, which I chair, and Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, will investigate these allegations of wrongdoing as well as their impact on the accuracy of BLS statistics released to the American people.” “These serious allegations warrant scrutiny. The American people have a right to expect that the economic statistics produced by federal statistical agencies accurately reflect the actual state of the our economy—especially the number of Americans in the labor force, the number working, and the number seeking work, but unable to find it. Presidents, Members of Congress, and the Federal Reserve, as well as corporate executives and small entrepreneurs, use BLS statistics to help them make important decisions. They need to know that BLS statistics are true representations, not numbers “doctored” to further the immediate political objectives of one political party.”

Have questions about the Health Insurance Marketplace? Here are the answers Hundreds of thousands of Texans are now able to buy health care coverage from private insurance companies through an online marketplace set up by the federal government. Because it’s new, the Health Insurance Marketplace has prompted some questions, so let’s briefly go over the most common ones in hopes of clearing up any confusion about the program. Whom does the marketplace help? The uninsured. If you have health insurance through either your employer or a government program like Medicare or Medicaid, you needn’t concern yourself. The marketplace is meant mainly for individuals who want to buy health care coverage on their own for themselves or their families. The marketplace simplifies your shopping for coverage by letting you make side-by-side comparisons of health plans. You’ll get a clear picture of what benefits you’d get and what premiums and deductibles you’d pay. Then you can enroll in the plan that best fits your needs and budget. It all can be done online, at http://www.healthcare.gov/. Why would a healthy person need insurance?

Though no one plans to become sick or hurt, most people eventually need medical care. !VAILABLE AT .EWSSTANDS IN Calendar Three days in the hospital run, on Garland,Rowlett calendar@texasmetronews.com average, $30,000. Can someone with a medical condition buy insurance?

The benefits are similar to what’s typically covered in an employer-provided plan. That’s a significant point. Until now, individual insurance policies haven’t always offered such an array of services. How do the health plans vary in cost? Some marketplace plans have lower monthly premiums but charge you more out-of-pocket when you require care. Other plans charge higher premiums but cover more of your medical expenses. You’ll decide how you want to balance your premium costs with your out-of-pocket costs. For example, if you see your doctor often and take a number of prescription drugs, a “platinum or “gold plan may work better for you. If you don’t, a “silver or “bronze plan may be more practical. You’ll see the differences in premiums and outof-pocket costs when you shop for a plan. How does someone shop for insurance in the marketplace? You’ll fill out an application and find out how much you can save on monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Most people who apply will qualify for lower costs of some kind. Specific information about the health plans available in your area is posted at http://www.healthcare.gov/. Where can someone go for help in applying for coverage and enrolling? You can get help online (http:// www.healthcare.gov/), by phone (1-800-318-2596) or in person. There will be people trained and certified to help you understand your health coverage options. The website and toll-free call center can direct you to the benefit counselors in your area.

brunt of any medical bills, which could land you and your family deep in debt. Health Insurance Marketplace won’t affect Medicare, but ‌ You’ve probably heard a lot over the last month about the Health Insurance Marketplace, a new way to shop for health care coverage.

What does the marketplace’s health insurance cover? All the health plans provide a package of 10 essential benefits, including emergency services, hospital care, lab services, prescription drugs, doctor visits, preventive care, rehab services and maternity care. Some plans offer additional coverage, such as for dental or vision care.

Insurance agents and brokers can also help you with your application and health plan choices.

If you’re enrolled in Medicare, you may think that you’re affected by this new program and that you need to do something in response to everything you’re hearing and reading.

Open enrollment runs through March 31, 2014. Coverage starts as soon as Jan. 1, 2014. What if someone doesn’t have coverage in 2014?

The Health Insurance Marketplace will give people access to affordable, comprehensive coverage. They’ll be able to apply online, by phone, in person or by mail. They’ll learn about the insurance plans available to them, including the benefits and out-of-pocket costs.

Relax. The Marketplace is designed primarily to help people without health insurance. You have insurance through Medicare. No matter how you get Medicare -whether through the traditional fee-for-service program or a private Medicare Advantage plan -- you won’t have to make any changes.

n Maybe your grown children or grandchildren aren’t insured because they just don’t see the need. Many young adults tend to think of themselves as invincible. They don’t realize that a broken leg from an accident could end up costing them thousands of dollars in hospital and doctor bills.

But you also won’t want to turn a deaf ear to all the talk about the Marketplace because you may have family members and friends without health insurance who could benefit.

When can someone shop and enroll, and when does coverage start?

The Marketplace can help. People will have guaranteed coverage regardless of a medical issue. Insurers won’t be able to deny them coverage or charge them more because they have, say, diabetes or high blood pressure.

The initial enrollment period kicked off in October and runs through March 31.

Yes. Insurers can’t deny you coverage because you have a medical issue, such as cancer or diabetes. Nor can they charge you more than they would someone who’s in good health. And once you have insurance, the company can’t delay your treatment. Your medical care begins immediately.

Your spouse, for example, may need coverage because he or she isn’t 65 yet and can’t qualify for Medicare. Maybe your spouse has even tried to buy insurance but been turned down because of some pre-existing medical condition.

An Undisputed Monster

Quit Playin’

I’m friends with the monster that’s under my bed. Get along with the voices inside of my head. You’re trying to save me, stop holdin’ your breath” - “The Monster” by Pop and Rap Icons, Rihanna and Eminem HBO has produced a lot of great documentaries and grandiose dramas, but its latest, “The Undisputed Truth,” a selfloathing, self-laughter chronicle starring former boxing heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, is a monster. Michael Gerard Tyson is without question an enigma of his own making with a whole lot of help from Don King and the national media. But if you thought Mike Tyson’s last knockout would be in the ring, you got it wrong. There Mike was again, center stage in New York, but this time he worked the turnbuckles on Broadway rather than Madison Square Garden. Even before he premiered this one man act, the media and the masses found it

by Vincent Hall

confusing. How can a man who seemingly could not put two words together, provide two hours of standup dialogue? He thrilled in Las Vegas, and later producer and pundit of all things Black,

Spike Lee, made it cinematic and more than enjoyable for television audiences. Tyson commences to beating the hell out of his audience by sitting in silhouette in the middle of the stage. And in the fashion of America’s best comics, he winces about

the worst pains in his life collection to create some of the most profound comedy anyone could imagine. Mike clears up some of the mysteries about his troubled youth, his amazing rise to the top, the proverbial downfall that black superstar athletes generally face, and at long last; love. In the end, Mike finds love for himself, his new family and his new life. Mike Tyson will always be known for that tattoo that emblazons his left facial corner, the ear nibbling he performed on Evander Holyfield and that “bitch” Robin Givens. Tyson made a lie out of Carl “The Truth” Williams; holds the record for being the youngest heavyweight champ ever at 20 and the eight second knockout of an opponent. He mumbles about the struggles he has with his speech and even admits that he and the therapist have only scored a technical knockout of words like “encyclopedia and epiphany.” Tyson admits all of the dysfunction that led to his dysfunction, and the audience shares his saga. You are left with a newfound respect for the man and overcomer Tyson is.

Spike Lee choreographs this monstrous life tale and testimony with music, sound effects and cameos of the audience who are at points aghast and amazed. Spike’s creativity in tandem with Tyson, left you tired and listless from trauma and laughter. Tyson cusses and cremates promoter Don King and sheds a light on his divorce of two women at one time. Apparently Robin Givens’ mother took outside interference to a whole new level, and spoiled any chance they had of remaining the twain ‘til death do part. He keeps deliberate eye contact with his guests and even delivers some passive and parenthetical jokes while poking and pointing at people in the audience Tyson shares his impressive visitors list while incarcerated which included, Spike Lee, Whitney Houston, John Kennedy Jr., Maya Angelou, L.L. Cool J, James Brown, Al Sharpton, Larry King and the O’Jays. Florence Henderson from the Brady Bunch tried to visit him at the Indiana institution, but Tyson turned her down because an overzealous White prison guard demanded that he don shackles for the encounter. He apologized to her in the film. In the end Mike is free and that is the undisputed truth. Tyson knows his monster and is comfortable. Vincent Hall is an author and awardwinning columnist.

No drive-thru, Bank of America? Really… Full disclosure – I have been a long time customer of the Bank of America. Actually I have six accounts. No money though! Anyway, that’s another column. I’m wondering, though, if Bank of America deserves my little business. Years ago I visited the Bank of America Branch at Robert B. Cullum and Martin Luther King Blvd. in Sunny South Dallas. Customers expressed dissatisfaction over the condition of the branch and with good reason. The carpet was dirty, the furniture worn and the décor was outdated. At the time former Dallas ISD School Board Trustee Ron Price also let management know of his displeasure with the condition of the branch. After a call to corporate, the branch received a makeover. The Dallas Weekly was all over the story! Anyway, during a recent visit to the same branch, I drove up to the drive-thru and sat patiently. Then I realized that I wasn’t going to receive any service. So, I drove around to the front of the bank and entered the premises. As always this branch has very pleasant tellers and managers. I asked about the closed drivethru and was told that a decision was made to close several across the metroplex. I expressed my concerns and told the manager that I wanted to be able to pull

One African American Woman’s Opinion

by Cheryl Smith

up at a drive-thru and do business. I also told the manager that I was concerned that certain communities were having “issues” other parts of town were not. She listened intently as I talked about another branch, on Camp Wisdom in Duncanville. That branch needs a serious upgrade. Actually it needs to be closed down until it has been completely remodeled and refurnished. The carpet is soiled and slimy in places, the furniture is worn and every time I enter the building, I am assaulted by the odor. Even other customers have commented about the smell, which seems like it is a combination of urine and puke. Recently I had an appointment scheduled to discuss my accounts. When I arrived at the Camp Wisdom branch for my meeting, the representative was not ready for me. I was asked to take a seat, but there was no

way I was sitting on those chairs! I waited five minutes and I just couldn’t stand the smell any longer and I walked out. Now my departure ended up costing me, but you’re late for my appointment and then I have to stand around and have my senses attacked? Not me! Do you think I received a call, a note or anything? If so, you have another “think” coming. So, back to the closed drive-thru. The reason why I am so upset is because I chose Bank of America over a decade ago because the representatives expressed a strong commitment to community and service. They said they valued diversity and being good corporate citizens. I also liked being able to locate branches as I traveled the country. Additionally, I’ve met several of the branch managers and especially liked visiting the branches on Lancaster Road,

Martin Luther King Blvd and Zang Blvd. I was told to call customer service and launch a complaint. NO, Bank of America, you call me – (469)867-6004! I expect the same quality of service when I enter any branch and I also expect to see the same quality décor, furniture, etc. The Bank of America stamp should be on EVERY branch regardless of where it is located. I bet if the Bank of America executives flew into Dallas with their parents, they would not bring them to the Martin Luther King or Camp Wisdom – Duncanville branches. No, they’d probably head north. And that is totally unacceptable! And, Bank of America is not the only business that seems to have an issue with providing the same attention to detail at EVERY location. An argument can be made for anything you believe in and I respect executive decisions to keep their businesses profitable, however, it is imperative that every effort be made to ensure that your company brand does not become tainted because you are not respecting your questions equally. It’s time out for providing substandard services and goods to certain communities. Find a way to spread the love or you may find yourself revisiting your dwindling profit margins.

We’d love to hear your opinion. Write to publisher@Texasmetronews.com

She’s Still Not our Sister is worth watching By Cheryl Smith I Messenger

While actors, talk show pundits and viewers are lamenting the saturation of the airwaves by reality shows, there are some quality shows on the horizon, and interestingly, there are new and local directors, producers and actors who are filling the void in programming. Vernon Snoop Robinson is the director of She’s Still Not Our Sister, the dramedy surrounding four sisters and their loveable aunt, played by veteran actress Jackee Harry. Adapted from the hit gospel stage play, She’s Not Our Sister, this series evolves around three sisters, who as they deal with their estranged father’s death, they also learn that they have another sister. People will tell you there’s nothing like a funeral to bring out the ugly in any family, and that’s just what happens from time to time as the four beautiful, talented young ladies try to adhere to their father’s will in order to inherit the millions he has left behind. That key stipulation, however, is that they must live together for a period of time. Now, if you’re expecting a lot of cat-fighting and stuff made for reality shows, that is not what you get from She’s Not Our Sister. You have four women, plus auntie, dealing with everyday issues surrounding relationships, finances, work, education and living.

Guy Rawlings joins CBS 11/ TXA 21

Sports anchor/reporter Guy Rawlings has joined CBS 11 and TXA 21, beginning Monday, Nov. 25. “Guy’s passion for sports is evident in everything he does,” said CBS 11 and TXA 21 President and General Manager Gary Schneider. “He will be a great fit with our already strong sports team.” Rawlings was most recently a news anchor and sports host at WGCL-TV in Atlanta. Prior to that, he was the lead sports anchor and reporter at WESH-TV in Orlando. He has also previously worked at stations in Baltimore, Charleston, S.C., Jacksonville, Fla., and Miramar, Fla. A graduate of the University of Florida, Rawlings began his television career at WCJB-TV in Gainesville.

Vivian dropped out of school to take care of the family and she is played by Kellita Smith of the Bernie Mac Show; then there’s Cynthia who is about to be married, played by Drew Sidora of The Game and most recently, the TLC Movie; Allison is the “new” sister played by Jazsmin Lewis and Azur-De Johnson plays Deniece, the recent college grad who wants to go to law school And yes, there are men with key roles, instead of being relegated to man-bashing scenes or the stereotypical trifling characters. Clifton Powell is the somewhat flirtatious Rev. Beckley and D’Andre who marries into the family, is played by Christian Keyes. What makes each episode interesting to watch, has to be the exchanges between the characters. The writing is real and true to life, as opposed to some of the mediocre writing we are subjected to where everyone is jockeying for a laugh and laugh tracks are needed to prompt audiences when to chuckle. This limited series is enjoyable and puts one in the mind of other family shows, like the Cosbys, Soul Food and Girlfriends. Purchase the series on line, gather your friends or family members and enjoy the show!

History of Orange Blossom Classic shared in issue of American Airlines Magazine Tallahassee, Fla. – The historic 1967 Orange Blossom Classic between Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Grambling University is the cover story of the November 15 issue of American Airlines’ publication, American Way. Written by Samuel G. Freedman, NY Times columnist and author of the book Breaking the Line, the article describes how two rival football teams, with two star quarterbacks under the leadership of two legendary coaches revolutionized college sports and transformed the NFL. FAMU coach Jake Gaither with quarterback Ken Riley, along with Grambling’s Eddie Robinson and James Harris made a profound difference in how America finally came to appreciate the talent of black athletes. For a 30-year period, the Orange Blossom Classic football game in Miami wans the most important annual sporting event and

the largest annual gathering of any kind for African Americans. The Orange Blossom Classic was founded by J.R.E. Lee Jr., the son of Florida A&M University’s president, at a time when blacks were not allowed to compete in bowl games. In 1933, FAMU beat Howard in front of 2,000 fans at a “blacks-only” ballpark in Jacksonville, Fla. For 13 years, the contest hopped around the Florida cities of Orlando, Jacksonville and Tampa before becoming an annual event in Miami in 1947. During the first Classic game in Miami, a racial milestone was met. For the first time, black fans were permitted in the main stands of the Orange Bowl. “When a Florida A&M Rattler receiver named Nathaniel “Traz” Powell caught a 45-yard pass to break a tie with Hampton Institute, he became the first black man to score a touchdown on the Orange Bowl’s previously whitesonly gridiron,” Freedman writes in the article. “For years to come, blacks around the state would speak about his touchdown as if he’d been Rosa Parks refusing to surrender her seat.” To read the article in its entirety, visit http://hub.aa.com/en/aw/orangebowl-classic-football-black-history .

CATCHING FIRE is the second installment based on Suzanne Collins’ fictional trilogy, THE HUNGER GAMES. Directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Simon Beaufoy and Michael Arndt (screenplay), THE HUNGER GAMES CATCHING FIRE picks up where the first film left off, with District 12 tributes Katniss Everdeen (Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) back home fresh off of their 74th Annual Hunger Games win. It’s not long after they are back home

that in addition to being a reallife car enthusiast, Walker also studied marine biology and had a particular interest in sharks evident by his appearance on the Discovery Channel’s “Spawn of Jaws” special during Shark Week this past summer. He was also committed to charity work and founded Reach Out WorldWide after a trip to Haiti in 2010 following the devastating earthquake inspired Walker to fill an unmet need for

Mustang. Walker is survived by his parents, four siblings and his 15-year-old daughter. Rodas is reportedly survived by his wife and two children. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash and thus far has said speed was a factor in the wreck that claimed the two men’s lives. For more information about Reach Out WorldWide, visit www.roww.org.

THE HUNGER GAMES CATCHING FIRE An entertaining adventure! Four reels

with their family and friends that they have to leave again, this time on the customary “Victor’s Tour,” where they visit the citizens in what’s left of the dystopian world that is Panem, formerly known as North America. Sounds harmless enough except for one problem…the Capitol’s fearless leader, President Snow (Golden Globe winner Donald Sutherland) worries that there is a rebellion brewing in the districts as a result of Katniss and Peeta’s victory. So, as if fighting to the death once was not sufficient, the Tribute darlings of District 12 are thrown a major monkey wrench in their plans when President Snow announces the 75th Annual Hunger Games as the third Quarter Quell – a special edition of the Hunger Games that only occurs every 25 years and requires the most recent victor(s) to compete against extremely skilled past victors of the Games. Naturally, Katniss meets this news with a ‘you-gotta-be-kidding-me’ reaction, considering she just finished a brutal round of the infamous Games. An ever-present subplot is the pseudo love-triangle between Katniss, Peeta and Gale, portrayed by the dreamy, Liam Hemsworth. The relationship is categorized as “artificial” because Katniss and Peeta are forced to convince the people of the districts that they are genuinely in love as a distraction to snuff out the spark of an uprising. However, Katniss really loves Gale, her

romantic interest back home, but the more she has to pretend to be in love with Peeta, the more her feelings grow for her fellow Tribute/survivor. Armed with their trusty Hunger Games dream team including previous victor and mentor, Haymitch Abernathy (Emmy winner Woody Harrelson), over-thetop escort, Effie (Elizabeth Banks) and brilliant personal stylist, Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), Katniss and Peeta prepare for the Quarter Quell. Also reprising his role as the flamboyant host of the televised Games is Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman. Joining the cast in the sequel are Golden Globe winner Jeffrey Wright as Beetee, a Quarter Quell competitor who is an electronics and wiring expert, and Oscar winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman as

Plutarch Heavensbee, the new head game maker. As sequels go in the action/adventure genre, THE HUNGER GAMES CATCHING FIRE does not disappoint. It is chock-full of adrenaline and gripping scenes. The arena is a step above the arena setting in the original film and the battle to be the lone survivor is thrilling. Die-hard fans of THE HUNGER GAMES novels will be thoroughly entertained with this latest feature film adaptation. Rated PG-13 (for intense thematic violent material and disturbing images — all involving teens), THE HUNGER GAMES CATCHING FIRE has a running time of two hours and 26 minutes. The Lionsgate film opened nationwide in theaters on November 22, 2013.

Taye Diggs, Morris Chestnut, Harold Perrineau and Terrence Howard entertain the ladies.

Written and directed by Malcolm D. Lee, THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY reunites the entire 1999 original all-star cast featuring Taye Diggs (Harper), Morris Chestnut (Lance), Monica Calhoun (Mia), Nia Long (Jordan), Terrence Howard (Quentin), Harold Perrineau (Julian), Regina Hall (Candace), Melissa De Sousa (Shelby) and adds new cast member, Eddie Cibrian (Brian) to the talent mix. The film opens with a clever sequence of key dramatic scenes from THE BEST MAN. Whether you have never seen the original film or you did see it, but it’s been a while, the opening montage serves as a Cliff’s Notes version of the main storyline to refresh your memory and/or bring you up to speed. Next, the story segues to the present day, 15 years later, with acclaimed author and NYU professor, Harper Stewart contemplating his next literary project. He has not experienced bestselling success since he penned, Unfinished Business — the book that single-handedly destroyed Lance’s trust in Harper because of the revelation that Mia, Lance’s wife, cheated on him with Harper during their engagement. Harper’s latest manuscript has just been rejected, he has been laid off from his faculty position at NYU, he is facing mounting financial woes due to costly fertility treatments and he and his wife, Robin are expecting their first child on New Year’s Eve.In

an attempt to avoid putting stress on Robin, a professional chef, who has been diagnosed with a high-risk pregnancy, Harper does not tell her that he lost his job. Meanwhile, he has been ignoring invitation’s from his old friend, Mia, to spend the Christmas holidays with the Sullivan family. That is until he gets the idea to approach Lance, who is planning to retire from the New York Giants after this season, about doing his biography in a last ditch effort to save his writing career. For self-serving reasons Harper has a change of heart, and he and Robin accept Mia’s invitation. When Harper and Robin arrive at Mia and Lance’s sprawling mansion, they are greeted by Mia, the hostess of all hostesses with the spirit of an angel, and Lance, the God-fearing, familyoriented, pro athlete who is warm to Robin, but sarcastic and ice cold to Harper. After all these years, it is abundantly clear Lance still has not gotten over Harper and Mia’s transgression. The tension between Lance and Harper sets the stage for what will undoubtedly be a long and uncomfortable visit. Soon after, the other guests arrive and the whole crew is, for better or worse, back together again. Jordan is a high-powered, independent, I-am-womanhear-me-roar entertainment executive who is in an interracial relationship with Brian. Julian is a headmaster at a school that has just lost its major benefactor due to his ex-stripper wife, Candace’s questionable

past. Rounding out the bunch is the lone bachelor, Quentin aka “Q,” the

successful troublemaking, brand guru who chases women like it’s an Olympic sport. And last, but certainly not least, is Shelby, Julian’s ex, the selfacclaimed diva who is now a single mother and the star of the hit reality TV series “The Real Housewives of Westchester.” As friendships (and rivalries) are renewed, relationships are tested and old wounds are reopened, the Sullivan’s lavish home, which serves as the primary setting for the majority of the film, quickly morphs into soap opera central providing venues for everything from hot and heavy lovemaking sessions, to a musical performance to a good, oldfashioned Jerry Springer Showstyle girl fight. You will have to go see the film to find out what happens next, but overall Malcolm Lee should be applauded for this cinematic masterpiece. THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY is an early gift for ALL audiences. African-American except Cibrian who is Caucasian, the movie should in no way, shape or form be labeled a “Black film.” This is an American story about love, hope, forgiveness and friendship. It is about relationships and issues that people regardless of race, gender, age, faith, socioeconomic status or sexual orientation deal with everyday. The scenes that make AfricanAmericans laugh and cry will be the same scenes that make AngloAmericans, Latinos, Asians and Native Americans laugh and cry. Lee’s skillful storytelling lends to a brilliant script and his vision for the sequel produced a film that in many ways has topped the original movie – a rare feat in Hollywood. THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY, rated R (for language, sexual content and brief nudity), is an instant classic and is destined to become a permanent part of America’s holiday collection once it is released on DVD. Ask Alma

Our sister didn’t tell us our father had died Dear Alma, I have a terrible problem concerning my dad. My mother and father were married for more than 50 years and had four children – three girls and a son – all now grown. We all work full-time jobs and live in different states. Only one – a sister – lives near my parents. She is not married and has no children. I recently called to wish my father a happy birthday, and my sister informed me that he was dead. She said she and my mother had him cremated and held a closed ceremony. She said that if the rest of us had called to check on him more frequently we would have known. We are all shocked, and some have vowed to never speak to her again. My dad had been sick for a while, and I know she felt that we all should have done more to help him and my mom. Still, she had no right not to tell us about his death. Neither did my mother, but she’s old and suffering with mild dementia. What should I do? Signed, Heartbroken Dear Heartbroken, My condolences to you and your family. Heaven help me, because I don’t know what to say next. When I read your email, I was completely stunned, so I read it again and again, and my brain wouldn’t take me to the next thought. I cannot imagine how you feel. Growing up, I often heard my mother say “death brings out the worst in families.” I had no idea what she meant, but as I’ve gotten older, the meaning has become clearer. At this stage of my life, I have lost

my big sister, Kim, my father and my mother. As I continue this life’s journey, I have accepted that parts of my heart will be forever broken. I thank God every day for my husband, son, stepsisters, aunts, nieces, nephew, many cousins and BFFs. But there’s something special about immediate family – the people you grew up with. They know you better than anybody else, and they love you anyway. The term “Life is short” means so much more to me now. I suspect many of my readers can relate. I say all of this to let you know that I’m familiar with the valley you have entered. I occupy a condo there. The loss of a parent is piercingly painful. Until it happens to you, you just don’t get it. No matter how old you are, how old your parents are, or how hard you try, you can’t prepare for it, and you’re never ready for it. Let’s talk about your sister for a minute. I understand the position she held as the lone caregiver. That was me, too. It’s more work than anyone can imagine or explain. The roles regarding a parent’s care put you in a delicate and reversed position. You feel like you are trying to parent the person who parented you. Your sister, the caregiver, was overwhelmed, and I think she felt that you and your other siblings were not carrying this enormous load with her. You mentioned that she’s the one who lives close by, isn’t married and without children. I’m sure that’s why the rest of you thought she could be more flexible. I understand that, but maybe you guys could have done more to let her know you were there to support her. It sounds like she felt alone in this situation. I could go on, but I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. Once your father died, it seems to me, she should have put all those feelings aside. She should have contacted one of you to contact the others. All of you deserved the right to funeralize and mourn your father’s death. All of you deserved the right to support and be with your mother, and each other, during that time. I’d suggest you contact your family clergy and a mental health professional. I pray that all of you will come together, forgive one another and start to heal and love in a healthy, meaningful and respectful way. God bless you and your family. Alma

Three Seniors recognized for scores on national test

Valarie Cardenas – National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar Student Valarie Cardenas didn’t expect to be selected as a National Hispanic Scholar Student, but with colleges recognizing her accomplishment she realizes the significance. Each year about 5,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) are selected to receive this honor. They are in the top two percent of the more than 250,000 Hispanic/ Latino juniors who take the test. Cardenas has applied to two schools so far – the University of Texas- Austin and Florida International University – and thinks she might apply to a few more. At UT, she wants to be accepted to the McCombs Business School to focus on marketing. Her interest in marketing came from

her experience on the DHS newspaper and yearbook staff, where she discovered that she enjoys working with people and would eventually like to work in the entertainment or music industries. In addition to her newspaper and yearbook activities, Valarie is also vice president of National Honor Society, dances and teaches classes outside of school, and is part of this year’s Academic Decathlon Team. Her advice to underclassmen? “Don’t procrastinate. A lot of people feel like they can wait until their senior year to make up for lost time, but the earlier you start, the better. Go to your fullest and don’t be ashamed of your intelligence.” Brianna Clarke – National Merit Scholar semifinalist Her selection as a National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist is yet another accolade on Brianna

said. “I’ve had a lot of great teachers over the years.” Bria Bayson – National Achievement Scholar Program Outstanding Participant

Clarke’s resume. She is currently ranked first in her class, and serves as co-parliamentarian in the DHS National Honor Society, secretary/treasurer of the band where she plays clarinet, and is a member of both Student Council and the Interact Club. Clarke has applied to both John Brown University and Vanderbilt University. She also plans to apply to a state school in Texas, but has not yet decided which one. She hopes to study early childhood education because of her passion for teaching, and is currently part of the Ready Set Teach program at DHS, which allows students to gain first-hand knowledge of teaching careers.

Clarke interns in Mrs. Levin’s kindergarten class at Acton Elementary, the school where Clarke spent her kindergarten through fourth grade years. Being named a National Merit Semi-finalist didn’t come as a big surprise to Brianna – based on PSAT scores from her sophomore year, Clarke knew she had a good shot at being recognized when she took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT) her junior year. As a Semi-finalist, she scored in the top one percent of students in Texas. “It’s a big honor for me, but I couldn’t have done this without my teachers, friends, and family,” she

Although she’s the daughter of two school teachers, Bria Bayson has decided to pave her own path. From a young age, she has always been interested in accounting and things that deal with monetary value. Bayson started loaning out money to her family when she was six years old, charging them interest until they paid her back. With her love of accounting, it is fitting that she plans to pursue a career in the business field after she graduates from college. Texas A&M is Bria’s top college choice, and she will be submitting her application soon Her selection as a National Achievement Program Outstanding Participant is a great honor

for Bayson. The recognition means that she scored in the top three percent of all Black Americans who took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). Bria is in the Ambassadors studentmentoring program at Duncanville High School, and is a member of the track team. Bayson says she plans to start a local “think tank” soon with National Merit Semi-Finalist Brianna Clark, with whom she shares a statistics class at DHS. They hope to use the idea as a way to get students together to discuss world issues and come up with solutions. Bayson’s advice for younger students: “Do not become lazy and complacent. Have the drive and determination throughout the whole school year instead of just at the beginning, and finish strong.”

Dallas Performing Arts Sampler Series launched

Mayor Mike Rawlings has joined with seven of the city’s finest performing arts institutions to announce a diverse package of performances that give people a taste of the performing arts. DPASS – Dallas Performing Arts Sampler Series, encourages people to sample from Broadway, theatre, opera, music and modern dance. “These packages are a creative way to share great performances with new audiences,” Mayor Rawlings said. “This collaboration among some of our city’s finest performing arts organizations shows what can be accomplished by working together.” “Whether you’re a long time arts patron, or someone who has never been to one of our shows, you can dip your toe into the arts or try out new art forms, and at a very affordable price,” said Roger Nanney, chair of the AT&T Performing Arts Center Board of Directors. For a limited time, patrons can choose from the select shows each organization

 Disney’s The Little Mermaid (Dallas Summer Musicals)  The Fortress of Solitude (Dallas Theater Center)  Godspell (AT&T Performing Arts Center)  Motionhouse (TITAS)

has chosen for the DPASS packages. Starting with a 3-pack minimum for $75, the patrons can add shows for $25 each, up to a 7-pack for $175. Fees are included. DPASS is on sale from Monday, December 2 through Wednesday, January 15. The participating organizations

include the AT&T Performing Arts Center, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, The Dallas Opera, Dallas Summer Musicals, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Theater Center and TITAS. The mission behind the DPASS is to enrich the community through a diverse selection of arts that promotes, nurtures, and supports the performing arts in North Texas. “We each have a tremendous base of subscribers who regularly support what we do year in, year out,” said Darrell Jordan, former board chair for Dallas Summer Musicals. “But each of us here wants to reach out and get new people excited about the performances we present. This DPASS helps us do that.” DPASS Programming Selection:  The Barber of Seville (The Dallas Opera)  Bernadette Peters (Dallas Symphony Orchestra)  Cultural Awareness (Dallas Black Dance Theatre)

All DPASS packages must be purchased and the performances and dates chosen by January 15, 2014. DPASS packages can be purchased in person at the box office in the AT&T Performing Arts Center Information Center in front of the Winspear Opera House or by phone at 214-880-0202. DPASS is the product of the Dallas Performing Arts Collaborative, which consists of five performing arts institutions – AT&T Performing Arts Center, The Dallas Opera, Dallas Summer Musicals, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Theater Center. For the past year, these organizations, along with the City of Dallas and expert support from Dallas-based AT&T, have been exploring ways to reduce costs and improve service through collaboration, finding efficiencies and consolidating back-of-house operations where it makes sense. Progress has been made in areas of ticketing, calendar, health care and benefits, shared services and purchasing and artistic collaboration. “Perhaps the most important thing to come from this collaboration is a stronger working relationship between these organizations, focused on building both healthier arts organizations and more support for the arts in Dallas,” said AT&T Regional Vice President for External Affairs Holly Reed. “We are pleased to be supporting this discussion.”

He was 95. “Knowing that Jemison and his associates had set up an effective private car pool, I put in a longdistance telephone call to ask him for suggestions for a similar pool in Montgomery,” Dr. King wrote in his 1958 memoir, Stride Toward Freedom. In a statement, President Obama said he was saddened to learn of the civil rights pioneer’s death. “As we mark the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs

During his tenure, he helped found the Baptist World Center in Nashville, Tenn. but also faced criticism for his 1991 support of Mike Tyson, who faced a rape allegation at the time.
