Jones brings high energy show to Dallas
By Dorothy Gentry Contributing Editor If you don’t watch music competition shows on TV, chances are, you’ve never heard of Evan Taylor Jones.
During a break from preparing for his tour, which opened July 30 in Orlando, Jones took time to share his thoughts on different topics. Describe your songs: My songs are about love and peace. I don’t want to make people feel down and depressed listening to my music. I want people to listen to my music and come together and dance and relate on a happier level like this feels good.
He plans to change that soon. The self-described soulrock artist garnered national attention last season on The Voice, the popular reality television singing competition broadcast on NBC, and is coming to Dallas next week as part of his first North American Tour. He will be playing Thursday, August 11 @The Prophet Bar in Dallas at 9:30 p.m. Jones, who grew up on the classics left behind after his mother passed away when he was young, is showcasing his new CD, The Sunray Sessions Live, recorded with his eight -piece band. He said those who attend his shows should be prepared for an energetic evening. “In person my shows are high energy,” he said via phone from his home in Orland, Florida where he grew up. “ It’s like a party with the crowd crazy involved, singing along with us and having fun.” The show also features an “intimate part” Jones said, with love and happiness in the air. “I might address the crowd, speak on more personal issues, then turn around and jam out again and the crowd is into that too. “ He spent his childhood studying the music of his mother’s generation after she passed away when he was only 13 from lymphatic cancer. His mother, who he considers his guardian angel, became the influence that would guide his entire musical career. Jones’ music is a blend and melting pot of classic soul and rock, Motown, Muscle Shoals, Rock and Roll, Wilson Pickett, the Detroit music sound and more and reaches all generations. His music is being played in over 34 countries, and he's opened for Bob Marley’s band, The Wailers, as well as completing his own successful tours.
about opportunities and this one came along and I just took it. After a couple of more auditions and performing on the show, I was cut. I was devastated at first but it helped me to learn about the music industry. I want my career to be full of longevity.
Advice to young musicians on keeping free of the music industry “ills” When talent is there, save money. Put it back into your craft. Save your money. Take care of your body. What you put into it affects your body. Surround yourself with people who inspire you. Found out how to execute a business plan. Be smart On his blind audition for The Voice and being cut: I was contacted to do a blind audition and made the trip in July (2015). I had been reading a book
Jimi Hendrix. How do you want your music remembered? I want my music to be remembered as a communal thing. Where people gather naturally together in joy and peace. I want them to take heed to my words in my song; I agree with and promote love and peace. The history behind his hair: My mom passed and I dissected her music and what she listened to and started asking questions about my history and learned we have a lot of family from Ethiopia. I believe in hair being a sign of strength. I am a very spiritual man. I see the power of God, the universe, heart, mind, and soul. I urge people to surround themselves with positive thoughts and things, good people, etc. It naturally comes back to you. Universe grants your intentions.
What is your new single, “Happy to Groove with You” about? I wrote it with the intention to express how in relationships you have nothing to lose. We get caught up with life, kids, paying bills, etc. but at the end of the day, you come back to their person and melt into them and confide in them. This song is about that time. You have nothing to hide. You can express yourself and be happy with your loved one. And a lot of this is just communication. The legacy of musician Prince: The drummer in my band kept telling me to get into him (Prince) for the past 5 years. I actually never really got into his music until his death. Now I am infatuated and I love it all. He was deep man, humble too. His only showmanship was on stage. He knew how to guard his soul.
3
On going by three names: As a kid, I always knew I was in trouble or it was time to eat when my three names were called. I use it now (Evan Taylor Jones), as away of saying it is time to take care of business or an opportunity that has come up. Like it is time to eat. (business wise, etc.)
Who inspires you (musically?) Marvin Gaye, who is my favorite artist. Stevie Wonder. The past couple of years I have gotten into Lenny Kravitz and of course

Black Lives Matter and so does Black Lives Matter Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani went on a tirade at the Republican National Convention this week, saying that the Black Lives Matter movement is “inherently racist. Former New York Police Detective Harry Houck said that Black people are “prone to criminality. Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said on television and to the attendees of the Republican National Convention that the Black Lives Matter movement is “anarchy. He cited, angrily, the “fact that the claim that Michael Brown had died from being shot by Officer Darren Wilson had proven to be false. He decried the violence being meted out on police officers now, blaming BLM and saying he had predicted it. While murdering anyone is wrong, it is a fact that police have been killing unarmed Black men and women and getting away with it for decades. How many Black people have died at the hands of law enforcement officers while pleading for their lives we will never know. But what we do know is that these killings happen far too often and law enforcement officers who have been the shooters have gotten away with murder. Even while we cringe at what happened in

North Miami, the officers who were brought up on charges in the death of Freddy Gray have so far all been acquitted. Not wanting to face juries, these officers have chosen bench trials and the presiding judge has said not a one of them is guilty. In other words, nobody is responsible for the death of Freddy Gray. so in 2014, triggering economic sanctions from the U.S. and European countries that are still in place. His comment followed another display of ignorance when he said Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia are "not going into Ukraine, okay, just so you understand." Clearly, Trump does not understand. Responding to Trump's bizarre claim that Russia would never invade Ukraine under his leadership, Senior Clinton Policy Adviser Jake Sullivan said, "What is he talking about? Russia is already in Ukraine. Does he not know that? What else doesn't he know?" Plenty. He also doesn't know that you don't invite the Russian intelligence services or any other foreign power to hack into the emails of your presidential opponent. Trump said at a news conference, "Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press." At his July 27 news conference, Trump said, "Putin has said things over the last year that are really bad things. OK? He mentioned the N-word one time. I was shocked to hear him mention the N-word. You know what the 'N' word is, right? He mentioned it. I was shocked. He has a total lack of respect for President Obama..." However, FactCheck.org stated, "We scoured the internet and published reports archived by Lexis-Nexis and could not find where Putin ever used that racial epithet. Neither could the Washington Post or CNN, which wrote, 'There are no published reports to back up Trump's allegation about Putin's use of the racially derogatory term, however.' "Two experts on Russia told us via email that they had never heard of Putin using that term.
By George Curry
"'In Russian, the N-word does not begin with 'N' - and Putin's English is pretty rudimentary,' said Stephen Sestanovich, an expert on Russia and the former Soviet Union at the Council on Foreign Relations. '''I have no idea what [Trump] is talking about,' added Fiona Hill, an expert on Russian affairs and director of the Center on the United States and Europe and a senior fellow in the foreign policy program at the Brookings Institution..." As we have seen in case after case, Trump doesn't know what he's talking about, either. Beyond his being a blank sheet of paper on issues, the notorious liar is a mean-spirited, insensitive bully. That was on display in his attack on two Muslim American parents whose son, Army Capt. Humayun Khan, was killed in Iraq in 2004. With his wife at his side, Khizr Khan, a Pakistani immigrant, spoke at the Democratic National Convention last week in Philadelphia. "If it was up to Donald Trump, [our son] never would have been in America," he said. "Go look at the graves of the brave patriots who died defending America - you will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing and no one." Firing back, Trump ticked off a list of business success, none of which remotely qualifies as a personal sacrifice. To add salt to the wound, he told ABC News: 'If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. Maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. You tell me." The mother, Ghazala Khan, revealed that she was in too much pain over her son's loss to speak. A new Washington Post/ABC News poll found that two-thirds of American voters believe Trump is unfit to be president. Knowledge Trumps Ignorance every time.

HALL: In Minnie’s will QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award winning columnist.
Hazel Minnie Lorene Grimes Morgan transitioned to that “great cloud of witnesses” the other day. I am saddened by her loss, but she made sure that I was a beneficiary in her will. As a result of her love and liberating largesse, everyone who knew “Minnie” was blessed with the same gift. Minnie left her family and friends with the will to watch, fight and pray. Minnie, an avid entrepreneur, first caught hold of me during the “Malcolm X Renaissance.” Most Americans didn’t know it, but from the moment Shelton Jackson Lee, aka “Spike” announced he would direct a movie depicting the life of Brother Malcolm, Black folk invested heavily in study and paraphernalia. X literally marked the spot. Black Lives Matter has saturated our society by way of social media. T he little known Malcolm X Renaissance
was christened on the Negro.Net. It’s obvious by that glazed look that you went dark on the Negro.Net. Unlike Generation X and Millennials, Boomers didn’t have portable technology, so we got the word out face-to-face or on the phone. There was no texting or tweeting and long distance charges were applicable and expensive in some cases. The Negro.Net was a subterranean “Black Community” lifeline. Part of its success was that America’s “Black middle class” is so small and so interconnected, that we could get our messages out via HBCU and Pan-Hellenic circles, a few Black AM radio stations and of course the greatest progenitor of the Negro.Net; the Black Church. It’s a truism that Church folk from the pew to the pulpit are known to gossip. However, some of the gossiping that goes on at the First Urban Central Restitutional Progressive Holy Catholic Pentecostal Baptist Church of the Methodism,
Mosque Inc. Number 49, is useful to our survival as Black people. Spike Lee’s announcement of the Malcolm X movie created great expectations for us and great anxiety for Spike who was admonished by Black Nationalists and Malcolm X historians to “get it right.” The film was so good that Spike Lee urged students to cut school to see Denzel Washington portray Malcolm X. Minnie was a master disseminator of the Negro.Net. She and her husband owned the “Video Gallery” in Oak Cliff. The Morgan’s specialized in rare Black videos from Amos and Andy to the Blaxploitation flicks. I loved Minnie because she was pro-Black and it wasn’t no joke. My daughters, Erinn and Alison loved Minnie because she had the best and biggest pickles and Green Apple Jolly Ranchers to boot. My daughters were raised on Pickles and Black history. After Minnie learned that we were kindred spirits she never let me leave with-
out conducting an in-depth interrogation. Minnie would say, “Now Vince, (my mom prefers Vincent, but Minnie always did whatever the hell she wanted) I know who to tell my crew to vote for, but which of those propositions on the ballot are we for? Are some of the Brothers on the school board selling us out? What them White folks doing to John Wiley now? Why don’t they just leave us alone? Minnie drafted more Black people into playing Bridge than anyone in Dallas. She was a teacher and mentor. But her greatest gift was her life example that age is nothing to fear if you keep growing mentally and fighting politically. Minnie was the sounding board for my hopes and fears for this community. \I’ll miss her serious and earnest love for people. Ms. Minnie’s last words to me as she beamed brightly through her hospice, was “take care of that baby (Hailee); I’ll be praying for y’all.” She said y’all but I know it wasn’t just for me and my 12-year-old, she meant everybody. Hazel Minnie Lorene Grimes Morgan left me in her will and I am all the richer for it. Speaking of rich, I almost forgot. Minnie couldn’t stand Donald J. (JiveAss) Trump. Let’s bequeath a gift to her in November.
Save Our Cities: Education, Jobs & Justice TO BE EQUAL By Marc Morial
President and CEO National Urban League
“I recognize we are in political season. But the Urban League understands that your mission transcends politics. Good jobs, quality schools, affordable health care, affordable housing these are all the pillars upon which communities are built. And yet, we’ve been reminded recently that all this matters little if these young people can’t walk the streets of their neighborhood safely; if we can’t send our kids to school without worrying they might get shot; if they can’t go to the movies without fear of violence lurking in the shadows.” -- President Barack Obama, National Urban League Conference, July 25, 2012
As demonstrated by the recent acquittals of the Baltimore police officers accused in the death of Freddie Gray, and the wave of violence that has taken so many lives in recent weeks, the country continues to grapple with issues of racial hostility and violence. The lack of social and economic opportunity is at the root of the unrest. The troubling divisive rhetoric that has characterized the 2016 presidential race has fed the unrest. Only a historic, target-
ed mobilization of public-private partnerships can address the unrest. “Save Our Cities: Education, Jobs & Justice,” the theme of the 2016 National Urban League Conference campaign represents an unprecedented mobilization to influence public policy through grassroots political action. Taking place August 3 through 6 at the Baltimore Convention Center, the nation’s largest civil rights and social justice conference attracts thousands of the nation’s most influential community leaders, together with top policy-makers, academicians, business leaders and artists for three days of dynamic dialogue, intellectual exchange and community service. Workshops, panel discussions and policy sessions are built around the Urban League Movement’s agenda to address the challenges of unemployment, educational inequity, and social injustice. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have been invited to address the Conference at the Presidential Plenary - a long-standing tradition of the conference, acknowledging the indispensable relationship between the nation’s highest office and its leading civil rights and social justice community. The plenary is a continuation
of a process that began at last year’s Conference, when five candidates vying in the Republican and Democratic primaries addressed the plenary. Questionnaires addressing issues of social and economic opportunity and inequality were distributed to all major-party candidates and all major-party candidates were invited to participate in a civil rights briefing from nine major civil rights organization. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders each attended the briefings and participated in a substantive discussion of their civil rights and social justice agendas. The conference workshops, forums and panel discussions represent a “deeper dive” into the National Urban League’s mission areas of jobs, education, health, housing and civic engagement. For example: The Link between African American Cooperative Business and Economic Freedom: Can communities like Baltimore return to their former glory as thriving American cities? State of Health and Wellness in Black America: The National Urban League’s Equality Index identifies a widening gap in health equity - how can communities address individual and institutional health factors to produce better outcomes?

#Baltimore Rising: Making Change in the Aftermath: the death of Freddie Gray in police custody last year thrust Baltimore onto the national stage, making it a symbol of what happens when communities feel left out of the American Dream. How can millennials and young professionals create positive change and progress? The State of the Urban League Address, scheduled for 7pm August 3 at New Shiloh Baptist Church, serves as my annual report on the progress and accomplishments of the Urban League Movement and serves as the official kick-off for the conference. Among the speakers, panelists and honorees who will join us in Baltimore are Congressman Elijah Cummings, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, White House Advisor Valerie B. Jarrett, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, BET Chair and CEO Debra Lee, and U.S. Education Secretary John B. King, Jr. This year we’re excited to debut a new event, the family-focused Community Day on Saturday, expected to attract thousands of Baltimore-area residents for informative and entertaining exhibits and sessions. Learn more at our Conference website and join us in Baltimore.

BLACKONOMICS by James Clingman
via George Curry Media Jim Clingman, founder of the Greater Cincinnati African American Chamber of Commerce, is the nation’s most prolific writer on economic empowerment for Black people. He can be reached through his website, blackonomics.com.
Booker T. Washington spoke those words in his best effort to show us what is really happening in this country. He tried to convince us to stay focused on the money-side of things, and he admonished us not to immerse ourselves in the political whirlpool and abandon our economic resources. As I look at the upcoming election, and as I have written since the Florida election debacle in 2000, all I can sadly say is, “Sorry, Brother Booker; we did not listen to you.” Once again, this is the “most importanelection of our time” and we are gearing up for the fight. We must register to vote, once again, because our people “died for the right” to do so. We must come out as we have never come out before, you know, like we did in 2000, because 2016 is the “most critical election of our lifetime” - again. Black folks are so hyped about this election, irrespective of not hearing very much about how Black people, specifically, will be positively affected by the outcome. Our leaders tell us - again - that Black folks have the “power” to sway the election in either direction. The question is: If we have that kind of power, why aren’t we using it to get a few concessions for ourselves? Why aren’t we forming an independent political party and
CLINGMAN: ‘At the Bottom of Politics...Lies Economics’ leveraging our “power” for a quid pro quo? We may have the power to swing the vote, but it doesn’t seem to matter. I suppose a better way to say it is that Democrats need the power of the Black vote to win, but Republicans only needed one Black vote in 2000 to win: Clarence Thomas’ vote. This political game, at least the way we are playing it, is one that keeps our attention on the symbolism rather than the substance beneath it all. We have had decades to get our act together. Didn’t we see what happened in 2000? Why did our political leaders go back to sleep after they yelled, screamed, and ranted about the Presidential Selection? What were the brothers and sisters doing in Florida after their rights were destroyed by Hurricane Katherine (Harris)? Oh yeah, they sent her to Congress. What have we been doing to avoid a repeat of what we so vehemently complained about? Most would say: “We have been registering new voters.” Well, here is what the other folks have been doing. They have been making money. Private companies and lobbyists have used their time to figure out how to make more money from the political chicanery that takes place in this country. Private companies and lobbyists have been wooing our Secretaries of Defense,
Commerce, and State, hawking their wares across this nation, and licking their chops at the thought of raking even more filthy lucre into their coffers. Between the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections millions of dollars were made on computerized voting machines. Deals were made to open new offices in counties where their systems were purchased and backroom deals such as discounts on software upgrades were consummated. What was the response from Black political leaders, other than hand wringing and catchy voting slogans, regarding the irregularities of that time period? It sure wasn’t an endorsement of Black accountant and auditor, Athan Gibbs, and his TruVote System, which had real built-in protection against vote tampering, and provided a paper receipt for auditing purposes? Before his very suspicious death in Nashville, Tenn., in March 2004, Athan traipsed across this country trying to get his system endorsed and ultimately utilized in the national election; his system was successfully tested by organizations and other verifiable sources, but other than Cynthia McKinney, Black political leaders by and large did not support a Black man’s invention that would prevent what they constantly complained about: the
disenfranchisement of Black voters. Registering and voting were not the biggest problems in 2000; it was votes not being counted, votes being thrown out, and eligible voters being denied the right to vote. I had many conversations with Athan and worked to get Ohio to purchase his TruVote by introducing him to then Secretary of State Ken Blackwell but to no avail. Athan was killed; and one headline read, “Athan Gibbs dead, Diebold lives.” We failed to listen to Booker T., and we failed to listen to Athan Gibbs when he told us how to overcome the voting shenanigans of 2000. Moreover, had we supported TruVote, millions of dollars would have flowed into a Black-owned company. Maybe this time we will learn once and for all that politics is all about money, power, and maintaining status quo. I sure hope so, because right now Black people are losing on all three fronts. NNPA News Wire Columnist Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and Twitter @almaaskalma. Dear Alma, I work in a small accounting office of 16 people. We sit in cubicles very close to one another and we have more men than women. This is important to share as I explain my situation. My problem is my coworker. She’s a very young woman who insist on sitting with her legs wide open. She will turn away from her desk and what seems to be purposely, prop up one leg so you can see up under her dress. I know this sounds crazy, but she does. And every time she does it I think, WTH! When we have meetings in the conference room, she puts her feet in her chair and sits so you can look all the way up her dress. I am sick of it! Several employees talk about her behind her back. They even make jokes about it. I know that too is immature. She’s a mess, what she’s doing is a mess, the stupid jokes are a mess and I’ve had enough. What can I do? Seeing too much at work Dear Seeing, Help me to clarify, are you mad because she’s trying to show her cookies in the office or are you mad that you don’t have enough nerves to do the same? LOL. Naaw, I’m just kidding, I can see the steam coming outta your ears! Bear with me as I’m clarifying because, sometimes I get mad about an act someone else is committing that irritates me, but when my nitty checks my gritty, I’m really irritated cause I don’t have enough nerve to do the

Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington
goal is simple. Be in right relationship with God. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all things will be given you as well.” Matthew 6:33. This ‘seeking’ to me has always meant working in some capacity. Jesus said, “As long as it is day, we must do the work of Him who sent me.” John 9:4. Now none of us has Jesus’ pedigree, but I am not opposed to working for what I want. I’ve done it all my life. You probably have too. So the important question is how hard are you willing to work knowing that your very soul is at stake? Just what are you willing to do to let the world know who you are and whose you are? The good news of the gospel makes it clear that this is easy, if not ridiculously easy. Love God and love your neighbor. In this context love is a verb. Do enough so that the Jesus in you meets the Jesus in me. Do something, anything, that another person can’t mistake for anything else but kindness from above. For me, I’m asking God to walk with me in an effort to witness (see this column). I don’t exactly have it down yet. I’m finding that it’s not something you can study. I do know it’s triggered by the recognition that somebody needs to hear, in my case read, a word from God. You should know that at that particular moment, God has chosen you to deliver His Word. So open your mouth and speak. This work that I am trying to focus on is recognizing that I must let go and let God use me to uplift another human being. For those of you who are used to this, you know this is a very humbling experience. But, “…If a man will not work, he shall not eat……And as for you brothers, never tire of doing what is right….” Thessalonians 3:10-13. In the vernacular of the day, get up. It’s time to get busy. May God bless and keep you forever.
Scripture says you should live your life in such a way that those around you can see the Jesus in you. “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16. I know that sounds good. But what does it really mean? The only explanation that works for me is the one that talks about service, i. e. doing something in the name of the Lord. I still believe faith is a verb. We all know no one can live a perfect life. But it shouldn’t take a District Attorney’s cross examination to figure out where a person is coming from. The man who professes to love Jesus shouldn’t be okay with cheating on his wife, be content with a life of crime, or rationalize illicit sex, drugs and satanic rock and roll. If so, then the Lord cannot be your leader, nor Christ your example. We’ve all done it to some degree but at some point in your supposed walk with God, your behavior, your obedience, your principles and integrity must shine through. Perfection may be impossible, but serious effort is not only possible, it’s mandatory. You’ve got to give it your best shot each and every day. You can and will fall short, but it shouldn’t be for lack of effort. I forget who said, if you try you might fail. But if you don’t try, you’re guaranteed to fail. Please note that God requires effort. Allow me to testify about what I know to be true. My bible says the closer we come to Jesus, Resume: raylcarr@yahoo.com, the more we experience the blessings of God. And why wouldn’t we? After all, those are Jesus’ footprints in the snow. The path to righteousness is clear. The

Parkland offers tips to prevent heat-related illnesses, injuries
Athletes, band members at risk during summer ‘two-adays’ This time of the year student athletes and band members across Dallas-Fort Worth are engaging in twice-daily practices in anticipation of the upcoming football season. And even though the Metroplex averages 18 100-degree days a year, Parkland Health & Hospital System physicians warn that heat exhaustion can be deadly even if temperatures don’t hit the century mark. A combination of high humidity and temperatures in the ‘90s can have the same effect as triple-digit days. Exposure to extreme heat can result in illnesses and injuries, heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps or heat-related rashes. In the last six years Parkland Memorial Hospital has seen more than 240 patients with heat-related diagnoses in its emergency department. “A lot of schools are holding ‘two-a-days’ to prepare for the upcoming season. Even though many of the practices are held before sunrise or after sunset there is still a risk for injuries that directly correspond to the heat,” said Alexander L. Eastman, MD, MPH, Medical Director and Chief of the Rees-Jones Trauma Center at Parkland and Assistant Professor of Surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. “Most people lose as much as one to two quarts of fluid during an hour of exercise. When you’re not drinking enough fluids, your muscles get tired quickly and you may have leg cramps while walking or running.” Athletes, Dr. Eastman said, can lose as much as three quarts of fluids an hour during an intense workout, leading to illnesses such as heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion occurs when people are exposed to high temperatures, especially when combined with strenuous physical activity and humidity, and when

the body loses fluids and becomes dehydrated. When heat exhaustion elevates, it may result in heat stroke, a life-threatening medical condition occurring when the body’s cooling system, which is controlled by the brain, stops working. The resulting high body temperature causes damage to internal organs, including the brain, and could result in death. “It’s important that everyone, and in this case coaches and band directors, know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses, especially heat stroke which is the most serious heat-related disorder,” Dr. Eastman said. “It occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature: the body’s temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down.” When heat stroke occurs, body temperature can rise to 106 degrees Fahrenheit or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given. Dr. Eastman offers the following steps to treat an athlete with suspected heat stroke: Call 911 and notify their coach or a person in authority Move the person to a cool shaded area Cool him/her with methods such as: Soaking their clothes with water Spraying, sponging or showering them with water Fanning their body “It’s important to stop exercising, running, tackling or marching if you become dizzy or lightheaded or you feel very tired. Pay attention to your body and to those around you,” Dr. Eastman added. “If you see something, say something because these are the critical first signs that something is wrong.” For additional information, visit www.parklandhospital.com.
Comerica’s Ashford continues to soar, higher credit scores. In addition, the FSR noted that students who took a formal financial literacy class increased their knowledge of earning, saving, spending, borrowing, and protecting their money. With respect to adults, financial education is critical well beyond the retirement age. "Comerica is committed to providing students and adults with the skills and knowledge needed to successfully navigate the increasingly complex financial world we live in," said Ashford. "Our EMPOWER series, for example, in which we partner with the Dallas Public Library and the local chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants, is free and geared to help the community be more successful in navigating the worlds of finance, budgeting, savings and investing. These are the types of programs in our markets that Comerica embraces because they foster good financial principles and knowledge." In April, Comerica Bank received an Innovation in Financial Education Award, presented by Nasdaq and EverFi, and accepted by Ashford on behalf of the bank. The award recognizes Comerica's significant efforts to improve the financial capability of adults and children through unique digital learning initiatives. \Ashford was instrumental in forging Comerica's partnership with EverFi and the expansion of the bank's Money $ense program for local students at no cost to schools or taxpayers. Built4U Mobile, Nationwide Mobile Telephone Company, Signing Up Direct Sales Agents
Great opportunity to earn extra income and offer new phone service – Built4U Mobile, a telecom start-up, is signing up direct sales agents to become part of its new nationwide mobile telephone company that offers a full suite of products and services for customers tired of overpaying for their phone services. Anyone interested in becoming an agent can sign up online at built4ucareers.com. The company is setting out to avoid traditional brick-and-mortar stores to keep overhead costs low. In doing so, the company pays higher commissions to our agents and recycles money back into the community. Agents earn residual commissions and portions of each sale are shared with a local partner charter. The opportunity is available to college students and professionals of all backgrounds. The company’s founder, Darrell Woolen, is building the infrastructure for what he believes will become a highly profitable company, but he wants to make sure he also gives back to the community. As part of its social entrepreneurship philosophy, Built4U Mobile is lining up strategic partnerships with local schools, colleges, and churches so they can raise money from cell phone usage. “We like to think of it as recycling revenues back into the communities we serve,” Woolen said. Recently, Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III of Friendship-West Baptist Church, added Built4U Mobile to its West Wall Street Ini-
tiative, an effort to empower local businesses and consumers to reinvest in their communities. “We’re looking for individuals who are hungry and share our passion for our product,” said Woolen, who has more than 35 years in the telecommunications industry founded the nationwide full-service mobile telephone company. “There’s a great opportunity to earn extra income, and, in the long run, help support your family and community.” Woolen started the firm because he, along with so many friends and family, complained about their rising cell phone bills. Built4U Mobile has no hidden costs. Customers pay for what you want and what you use. Said Woolen, “It’s easy to sign up, get going and start using your phone without worrying about how much your phone bill will be every month.” Woolen’s team consists of a group of experienced sales, telecommunications and operations executives who joined him to start the nationwide full-service mobile telephone company. Convenience and flexibility are among the key components of the Built4U model. Customers can sign up for plans online 24/7, contact a local sales agent or call by phone (855-399-2470) to have access to high-quality multi-carrier networks available around the country. The company offers customers a full suite of products, including voice, text, data and cell phones. No contracts for service are required and devices are available with $0 interest for a two-year agreement, with approved credit.
