September Is National Preparedness Month Each year, Americans cope with an average of 10,000 thunderstorms, 1,500 floods and 1,000 tornadoes. The good news is that most weather can be predicted. The bad news is—as this past May’s flooding and December’s tornadoes reminded us—many weather-related deaths still occur each year in North Texas, despite advance warning. The first step to being prepared is realizing that severe weather can happen at any time—and it can happen to you. September is National Preparedness Month, and the City of Garland Office of Emergency Management is happy to announce that we are joining other national, state and local organizations, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in educating the public on how to prepare for disasters. National Preparedness Month is about helping individuals, families, businesses and communities take action to keep themselves and their families prepared! Establishing a family communication plan, building a preparedness go-kit and signing up for the City’s CodeRED weather warning system are all great ways to get you and your family started. It also is important to take the time to talk with your family and decide what you should do if an emergency happens close to home: Where will you meet if something hap-

pens? Does your insurance cover flood-related damage? Do you have enough food, water and medication to go three days without leaving the house? Discussing these topics will help save your lives and lessen the impact when disasters occur. It takes the entire community working together to prepare for, respond to, and recover from the destructive forces of nature and other disasters. Dallas-area Simon centers were recently designated as StormReady® and Weather-Ready Nation Ambassadors™ for their continued efforts to increase shopper safety in the face of severe weather. Awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service, these designations recognize Firewheel Town Center, University Park Village, North East Mall, Allen Premium Outlets, Grand Prairie Premium Outlets and Grapevine Mills for their preparedness to handle severe weather situations through communications, community outreach and hazardous weather training. Follow us all month on the City of Garland’s Facebook and Twitter pages, and be sure to visit the Office of Emergency Management’s webpage at GarlandTX.gov or KnoWhat2Do.com to learn more about how you and your family can be prepared for the next big disaster.

the years that just needed the extra attention, support team and specialized approach to help them succeed,” said Davenport, who has been CEO of DAS, Inc. a mental health and educationalresource company working with students with unique needs for 25 years. “This public information session is an important step for us to bring this school to life. We want everyone to come out to learn how this school will make a difference in the community – and too many parents’ and children who can benefit from an inclusive, barrier free, personalized education program.” Davenport, who is a Texas State certified Special Education teacher, diagnostician, and Licensed Specialist in School Psychology, said Bridgeway Preparatory’s approach will be based off her successful practice over the years where she has had students who have graduated from college and gotten jobs all around the country, including the White House. She also will incorporate Universal Design for Learning™, a framework that eliminates barriers and focuses on personalizing instruction to the individual needs of the child. “Every one of these students learns differently,” Davenport says. “Bridgeway is an opportunity to open the door to families who want to provide their children the best opportunity to learn, feel good about themselves and contribute to their community.”

This message has to be short and sweet. No need to beat people over the heads. This is just a simple request. I’m calling all alumni and friends to the floor. We have some here but we need some more! That’s right, it is time for us to stand up like never before. Sure we can have fundraisers and submit proposals for corporate support. After all, corporations have benefitted from hiring HBCU graduates so why shouldn’t they give?

cation but found their life partners! FAMU is good enough for their children and they are also exposing other youth to the wonderful opportunities that are part of the HBCU experience. October 1 is another opportunity to share some of the Black College experience with area youth. Buy some tickets and take some young people to the State Fair Classic. Alumni pay for your tickets. Grambling State and Prairie View A&M Universities are some fine institutions with rich traditions. Some of our best and brightest have walked their floors and grown from the experience.

If the survival of our HBCUs doesn’t become a priority, we are in for some tough days ahead. We can’t expect others to give and fight when we sit on the sidelines. Our ancestors never thought they could or would make it to college, still many donated or made sure their children had the opportunity. So even if you didn’t attend an HBCU, still give. What a noble cause to embrace. It is so much better to do something because it is the right thing to do, instead of only supporting the things that you benefit from. We need our HBCUs. Our HBCUs need us. Keeping in mind that every bit helps, now the question becomes, “what are you going to do?

Quit Playin’ by Vincent Hall

Vincent L. Hall is an author and award winning columnist.

Empathy as defined in the vernacular of the Reverend Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes III, is a simple but complicated emotive. Empathy, in the Haynes remix, is transliterated as the willingness to wear someone else’s skin. It’s the ability to get so emotionally or spiritually close to someone else’s dilemma, politics or position that you can act, respond, and feel the stimuli of “the other.” When presidential candidate Hillary Clinton remarked that half of Donald Trump’s voters were a “Basket of deplorables,” she was empathizing with the vast number of subsets that have been used as political fodder in the Trump campaign. The offensive and unmitigated hate stirred by “The Donald” attracts deplorables who believe White privilege and

HALL: Are You Deplorable? exclusivity to be their rightful share of the American pie. A deep dive into some of the complex political polling shows that these “deplorables” still believe that rude, lazy Niggers steal and kill on the regular; Mexicans are stealing White men’s jobs; the Gays have stolen American Christianity and the Muslims want to steal the Constitution and replace it with Sharia law. It’s sad enough that the descendants of pioneering refugees from Europe have been reduced to a group of whining, insecure Nationalists who believe that to lose the majority in population would be to forfeit “their” country. ‘‘It’s even more depressing to witness the blossoming of Trumpism and the deplorable effect it will have on our society for the next decade. Political experts conjectured that Trump would fizzle in the prelims. Who knew that Trump and the deplorable fringe, the Alt-Right,

would co-opt the Republican Party? A research of history might have been helpful, but no one could predict that Trump would be the armor bearer of this level of paranoia and xenophobia. Donald Trump is a government subsidized billionaire and taxpayer sponsored tycoon, sporting a tacky, bleached blonde comb

over, a cosmetic terracotta tan, and a handful of cheap ass ties that bear his signature with a label that says “Made in China.” Forgive me…but…Hey Donald; next time you sashay past the cosmetic bar at Neiman’s, pick up

ties that real rich people wear. Get a Brioni, or Ricci or a Charvet. My personal haberdasher, aka my Mama, says there’s nothing worse than a man in a $2000 suit with a $2 tie on. Have the Trump Foundation underwrite them like they do everything else. Anyway… my point was that The Donald is no genius. He didn’t go faint in Frankenstein’s laboratory working to figure out how to build a Republican monster. All he had to do was follow folks like Ronald Reagan who left a schematic. If you want to create “Reagan Democrats”, go to Mississippi to kickoff your campaign and give them something to hate. How about...” Welfare Queens?” Trump perfected the move by Lee Atwater and Bush 41 who brought us Willie Horton, that Black boogeyman whom they tied to Michael Dukakis. Or more currently the Tea Party, who tethered their movement to Trump’s “Birther conspiracy.” ”Birtherism” was devised to de-

certify and criminalize the Obama presidency and the GOP is complicit by virtue of their silence, head nods and shoulder shrugging. This “basket of deplorables” is not at all new. The “deplorables” have been underground but have always been in our midst. Trump deserves credit for using social media to enlist and vocalize more of the deplorable demographic. But the basket weaving has been going on since LBJ became the Abraham Lincoln of our age. The majority of America feels the empathy that Hillary Clinton is feeling…I hope. Genuine empathy is attainable. Just imagine that you are Mexican or Muslim; stationed in Afghanistan and Donald Trump called for the deportation of people like you. Hurts, don’t it? Now if you can wear Trump’s garment of hatred and hypocrisy with any level of comfort, you are probably in that basket of deplorables Hillary spoke of. You obviously lack empathy and that is deplorable.

GRANT: This Might Prove to Be a Game-Changer

Michael Grant President National Bankers Association

As president of the National Bankers Association, whose members include many of the Black-owned banks that received and are still receiving an unprecedented level of support from all over America, I would like to extend heartfelt gratitude by simply saying: Thank you! While efforts to get the Black community to utilize Blackowned banks is not new (Black banks have served the community since Reconstruction), what has been happening over the last two months is nothing less than phenomenal. The outpouring of support, triggered by the clarion call of rapper Killer Mike and answered by such superstars as Usher, TI,

Solange and others, caught the banks by surprise – a very pleasant surprise. Black people moving millions of dollars into Black-owned banks within such a short period of time might ultimately prove to be a game-changer! The catalyst for this mobilization of people and purses was born of frustration but the timing of this effort at self-empowerment could not have been more perfect. After decades of celebrating the colossal achievements of the Civil Rights Movement, the thought leaders in Black communities across America are beginning to reach a consensus: Black America will never be able to enjoy the full privileges of first class citizenship in this country until it had secured the ultimate badge of liberty in America: financial freedom! So many of the social ills that continue to plague large swaths of America’s Black communities can be summoned up in one phrase: financial dependence. High unemployment rates, underperforming businesses, crime, inadequate education and job training opportunities, low aim and an all-pervasive nihilism – especially among many

Black youths – is defining far too many Black neighborhoods in our country. Then along came this bank black movement. The idea of using one’s dollars to improve the overall condition of the commu-

Since statistics show that a qualified Black borrower has a higher probability of getting his or her loan approved at a Black bank, doing business with these banks – as a first choice – is a no brainer. nity has been resurrected. And, to be sure, opening accounts in Black banks is a great first step. But what should follow? Next, the Black bankers have

a responsibility to teach banking 101 to the masses. You see, placing millions of dollars in the bank as deposits creates the need to support those accounts with investment capital. It takes both core deposits as well as capital in order for the bank to increase lending which is where real economic development takes place. When banks’ capital ratios meet regulatory requirements, they have more capacity to provide home equity loans, small business loans, mortgage lending, personal lines of credit and so forth. The bank is also the community institution that can leverage a million dollar investment eight or nine times. The bank’s increased lending capacity is how we begin growing the collective wealth of the community. For example, the more home equity loans are used to create new businesses or to expand existing ones, the more jobs (and job training) these businesses can provide. It has been estimated that if the Black community would spend one-tenth of its disposable income with Black businesses, one million new jobs could

be created. So much of our economic destiny is in our own hands! Since statistics show that a qualified Black borrower has a higher probability of getting his or her loan approved at a Black bank, doing business with these banks – as a first choice – is a no brainer. The more we circulate our dollars within our own community, the more opportunities we create and the more wealth we can accumulate that can be transferred to future generations. Contrary to the anticipated push back of the naysayers, the “bank Black” movement is not a boycott of other banks; it is simply an intelligent strategy at diversifying one’s dollars and investing in oneself. The black banks are genuinely grateful for the trust that you, the consumers, have placed in them. Now, in order to sustain these new banking relationships, bankers and consumers must begin forging a new bond, born of mutual respect and a genuine desire to build what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would call “The beloved community.” Great days ahead!

Zika is a real threat we must address FROM THE HILL by Congresswoman

Eddie Bernice Johnson Today, I am writing about Zika, again. Earlier this year, I penned an op-ed linking climate change and infectious disease. In this particular case, I focused on the Zika virus because our South American neighbors were facing a major outbreak of the virus and several North American cities had already seen travel-associated cases. It was time to act to prepare to handle this disease. I wrote this in February. Now, I write in September, and Congress still has not taken any action to fund the agencies that would deal with preventing this disease’s spread. More than 200 days after President Barack Obama requested emergency funding to fight the Zika virus, there are now over 20,000 Zika virus cases across the U.S. and territories, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports. It baffles me that funding an imminent and growing disease is a point of contention. Let’s review the numbers. Nearly 1,400 pregnant women in the U.S. and territories have become infection and in the U.S. alone, more than one dozen babies have been born with the birth defect microcephaly. One of those infants, born in Texas, has died. Experts have estimated that 25 percent of the population of Puerto Rico, including pregnant women, will become infected by the end of this calendar year. In Florida, there is an active vector-borne outbreak in two areas of Miami, causing the CDC to issue its first domestic travel advisory in history. While Florida suffers, other Gulf Coast states, including Texas, must be prepared to engage in vector control efforts when the virus spreads. While Congress failed to act during the spring, then again in the summer, I urge my constituents and all residents of Texas to be vigilant and aware of the threats of this disease. There is a common misconception that if you are not planning on becoming pregnant or are not currently pregnant, you do not need to worry about the Zika virus. This is not true. If you become infected with the Zika virus, symptoms are mild and you may not suffer, but another mosquito can become infected from you and continue to spread the virus. All individuals are at risk of contracting and contributing to the spread of disease. While I urge you to stay informed on prevention, transmission, travel notices, and cases of Zika virus at http://www.cdc.gov/zika/; I want you all to know that you are entitled to a better government, one that protects you. I hope it serves you well before the end of this year. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson currently serves in Congress representing the 30th Congressional District of Texas. In 1972, she became the first nurse ever elected to the Texas State House; and eventually, the first nurse ever elected to the Texas State Senate and the United States Congress.

Big City Health officials from across America speak out about Zika’s toll WASHINGTON, D.C – Members of The Big Cities Health Coalition voiced their concerns about the lack of Congressional funding for the Zika virus response today, detailing the ways in which their communities have been affected, and how they have addressed the public health emergency in the absence of federal funds. The Coalition consists of the 28 largest, most urban public health departments in the country, representing approximately 1 in 6 Americans. These local health departments are on the front lines of fighting the outbreak by educating the public and health care providers about Zika, screening travelers from countries where the outbreak is more advanced, and scaling up mosquito control programs. Since January 2016, health officials at the federal, state, and local levels have been concerned about potential spread of the Zika virus in the United States. While most people have only mild symptoms or no symptoms at all when infected with Zika, the virus has a severe and troubling impact on some infected adults and unborn babies. In the absence of Congressional action on Zika emergency funding, the federal government has shifted funds from other programs to pay for Zika. In April, the Centers

dation. “Over the years, we’ve learned these students are making a difference in their communities on this huge issue.” Denny’s launched the ‘Hungry for Education’ scholarship program in 2013 as part of the brand’s continued commitment to help fight childhood hunger and promote education. To-date, Denny’s has awarded more than $250,000 in combined scholarships to deserving elementary, high school and college students across the country. “We’re incredibly proud to have worked with the Tom Joyner Foundation for so many years,” said April Kelly-Drummond, director, diversity affairs and multicultural engagement for Denny’s. “We’re committed, like Tom and his Foundation, to help these students complete their educations and celebrate all the great work they’re doing in their communities.” The Foundation will be reviewing applications and winners will be announced in mid-December 2016. for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) moved funds from state and local health departments’ emergency preparedness activities to pay for a response to the outbreak. Below, health officials from across the nation describe the impact if Congress fails to approve funding to address the Zika threat and restore emergency preparedness funding. Stephen Williams, M.Ed., MPA, Director, Houston Health Department - If funding for Zika is not provided, then we will allow Zika to get a foothold in the mosquito population. This will result in many babies being born with microcephaly...The City of Houston has taken a leadership role in combating Zika in our community but, like many other big cities, does not have the funds to respond to a local transmission event of Zika. Funding will allow us to conduct active surveillance to pinpoint if and where local transmission is occurring. Without increased funding we are blind. Z a c h a r y Thompson, Director, Dallas County (TX) Health and Human Services Department - It is not if, but when Dallas County will see local transmission of the Zika virus outbreak similar to Florida. The local transmission of the Zika virus is a clear and present public health danger to the residents of Dallas County. I have first-hand experience responding to the first confirmed Ebola cases in the United States. Federal funding is needed now for local health departments to continue to provide public education, contact investigations, and ground/aerial spraying to protect residents, and especially pregnant women, from the Zika virus.

Daddy, please help Tavis Smiley reports on impact of raising the minimum wage Ask Alma: by Alma Gill

NNPA News Wire Columnist Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at Dear Alma,

My parents divorced when I was nine. It was cool, because I spent a lot of time with my father and I got along well with my stepfather. My biological father and I had a great relationship and spent weekends and holidays together. Things changed after I graduated from high school. My father worked three jobs and was very serious about instilling in me the importance of hard work, but he didn’t see the need to go to college. He did everything for me, but he wouldn’t pay or contribute to my college education. I talked to him and told him how important it was to me, but he just wouldn’t. He didn’t even come to my college graduation. I didn’t then and still don’t understand. I’m now a father and will do everything to help my boys go to college. I have a great salary and have started their college fund. Here’s the reason I e-mailed you. My father’s health is failing. He isn’t ready for a nursing home, but he needs help, because he lives alone. I don’t want to help him, because he didn’t help me. How can I explain to him, he doesn’t deserve my help? Signed, My Father’s Son Dear My Father’s Son, Hmmmm, slow your roll my darling. I sympathize with you and totally understand your side of this situation, but you know what – you’re wrong. Yep, you’re wrong and your Daddy was wrong and two wrongs don’t make one right. Your life didn’t start when you graduated high school. Sounds like the two of you maintained a wonderful relationship up until then. His teachings and example of hard work, propelled you many a night

when it came to cramming, and hitting those books, I’m sure. I know you are hurt and you felt abandoned, but you know what – you did it; you succeeded. His decision not to donate or contribute to your education didn’t stop you from completing your academic goals and graduating from college. Congratulations to you. Sure, you’ve got student loans and other grown up bills to pay, but don’t we all? It’s time to let that go. In my opinion when it comes to caring for our parents, that’s a responsibility regardless of the relationship, unless there’s some kind of abuse. Reason being, both of my parents have gone on to be with the Lord and you know what, I can’t remember one argument. I don’t recall one disagreement or a time when I just didn’t want anything to do with them. Mind you, there were many LOL moments, I just choose not to recall. At this stage of my life I’ve realized, none of that nonsense was important anyway. You’re the creator of the life story your sons will recall and remember. You have an obligation to rewrite this chapter when it comes to what happened between you and your father. You can blaze a new path in your family legacy, one that includes the support for education. Teach by example to your sons and be there for your father. Show your young men how you are honoring your father in his time of need, here at the end of his life. Choose to be at your best for your boys. It’s not about your Dad or the cracks in the wall of your relationship. This is about what your sons will see, while they’re watching you, be the best son you can to your father.

NEW YORK /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This election year, one of the hot button issues is the minimum wage. The “Fight for Fifteen,” as it is called, began in New York City on November 29, 2012, when over 100 hundred fast food workers walked off their jobs, going out on strike, for a $15 hourly wage and union rights. Since then, the “Fight for Fifteen” has become a national initiative, a plank in the Democratic Party Platform, and an issue Republicans would like to see handled on the state and local level. Only a handful of cities have already put in place significant wage increases. WNET is New York’s flagship PBS station. This fall, Getting Ahead, a onehour documentary from Tavis Smiley and WNET, airing Friday, October 7 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings), reports on the real consequences of the “Fight for Fifteen” for both wage earners and small business owners in California, the first state to raise the minimum wage. The documentary takes a discerning look at how increasing the minimum wage is playing out in four Northern California cities – San Francisco, Oakland, Berke-

Tavis Smiley

ley and Emeryville – where pay increases have been in place for at least two years, pre-dating the 2016 statewide mandated minimum wage increases. To understand what it means for workers trying to make a livable wage and for business owners trying to make payroll, Getting Ahead weaves real-life stories with observations by two economic experts – Ken Jacobs, chair of the UC Berkeley Labor Center and Christopher Thornberg, PhD, founder of Beacon Economics – who look at the same set of circumstances but come to very different conclusions Tavis Smiley meets small business owners like Danny Huang,

in Oakland’s Chinatown, who is concerned that he cannot raise his prices enough to keep pace with paying mandated increases in wages. He profiles low-wage earners like Maria Martinez and Jamie Gaucin, trying to raise three children on minimum wage jobs, but who are forced to seek public assistance to make ends meet. Getting Ahead demonstrates that there’s no single answer in the debate over the minimum wage. As Getting Ahead reveals, there are differences of opinion about how raising the minimum wage will impact local businesses and employees. “What we also heard from those we talked with,” says Smiley in the documentary, “is that if there is a way for those in poverty to chase the dream in today’s rapidly changing economy, it won’t come from raising the minimum wage alone. The answer, anti-poverty advocates stress, is that we also need more affordable housing and job training for this new kind of economy.” Getting Ahead is the seventh collaboration between Tavis Smiley and writer-director, Jacoba Atlas.

Jakes tackles headlines in new Talk Show By Stacy M. Brown (NNPA Newswire Contributor)

The struggles of an interracial marriage, families divided by race, religion and politics and the conversion of one Jewish woman to Islam are all upcoming segments that will be featured on Bishop T.D. Jakes’ new talk show which premiered on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) on Monday, September 19 and is scheduled to air Monday through Friday. Jakes, one of the most influential pastors in America today, who has written books, music, plays and movies, said that his show could even provide discussion on topics like the Black Lives Matter Movement and controversial subjects like the National Anthem protest by Colin Kaepernick and the rape trial of comedy superstar Bill Cosby. “When we can get them, we’re not shying away. We will do stories that are in the headlines,” said Jakes, 59, the senior pastor of the Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas and the author of the New York Times’ bestselling books, “Instinct,” and “Destiny.” “I think there is a great need in our country right now for something that is uplifting and that builds bridges and causes people to rethink themselves,” Jakes said. “Much of what we see on televi-

sion doesn’t accomplish that. I’m hoping to bring the kind of conversation to America that’s informative and inspirational and still entertaining,” he said. Because he’s well-known in the pulpit doesn’t mean he’ll be preaching on the talk show, Jakes said, noting that he can reserve sermons for Sundays. “That’s not all of who I am,” said Jakes. “I’ve seen a lot of things, I’ve met with presidents and interacted with CEOs.” Jakes continued: “I’ve been to the courtroom and watched a crying mother say goodbye to her son; I’ve been to visit those on death row. I’ve been there when individuals have been disconnected from life-support; I’ve been to drug interventions. This September marks 40 years that I’ve been in the ministry, so this isn’t anything that’s new, only [now] I’ll be in front of the cameras.” If social media buzz is any indication, the new show will be a hit. The show’s Twitter handle, @ TDJakesShow, had almost 23,000 followers before a single episode

had aired. Jakes said that social media will play a big role in his new venture. “We want people to tweet or go on Facebook to continue the conversation,” he said. “You can’t always solve a problem in the 45 minutes you have on the show and I don’t see this just as a show, but as a network communication device to uplift people. So, after the show is over, you can still go on social media to keep the conversation going.” Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter or other websites, it’s important to reach those who use social media, the bishop said. “The stats say that hardly anyone sits in front of a big screen without a little screen in front of them in their hands and I’m guilty of that too. Being able to engage in every medium is important and I have a huge respect for the power of social media.” Produced by 44Blue Productions, EnLight Productions and T.D. Jakes Enterprises, the show will tackle various topics including human trafficking and heroism. Jakes noted that he’s thrilled to be on OWN. “Oprah Winfrey is an icon and a business mogul who has become a national treasure. I consider her a personal friend and I’m honored to have her support my new show,” he said.

Ask Vanessa:

District expands program proven to What does your resume reduce number of say about you? disciplinary issues Vanessa Morrison is a HR copywriter, a New Hire Consultant/Coach. She has been in business for seven years writing resumes and now teaches others and is the author of Maximize Your Job Success Series, most recently Maximize Your Job Success – Writing Your Resume – 8 Essentials to Get HR’s Attention to be released this fall. For speaking engagements, you can contact her at 214-810-5790.

Ask Vanessa addresses the most common issues regarding resumes. From time to time there will be an article written on trends concerning the resume, as well as articles pertaining to resumes and interviews. Q. Why Do I Have to Submit A Resume and What Does It Mean? A. A resume is a marketing highlight of your own experience, highlights and accomplishments. This gives you the opportunity to shine from the perspective of the employer of problems that you have solved. It is widely used by every employer and gives the employer a glimpse of what you have accomplished in a period of time. It also lets the employer know how you’ve accomplished it and it gives insight into who you are. In most cases, an employer has about 20 seconds to look over your resume. So, what you put on paper you have to make it count. Q. Do I have to submit every job I have ever had on my resume? A. No you don’t have to submit every job you’ve ever had. You should submit the job that is related to the job description. The going trend is no more than 10 years of employment. If you don’t have 10 years of employment, then list the jobs you have that are related to the job description and put the others in a different section. If that doesn’t work, then put the jobs you have, paying special attention to the functions of the job that are related to the job description. If you don’t have enough experience, then use your volunteer experience or your role in an organization to compensate for it. Q. What is most critical when preparing my resume? A. What is most critical when preparing your resume is located in top third of the resume. After listing your name and address, one should have all of the following. When an employer looks at your resume, they want to see the position you are applying for example: Training Manager, Account Payable Coordinator, Customer Service Representative, etc. Second, the next thing they focus on is the Profile Summary, the Summary Statement, the Executive Profile or Profile, this replaces the Objective Statement. The Objective Statement is not used anymore. Third, is Professional Experience, Last is Education and Organizations or Volunteer Experience. We will go more into the Profile Statement in the next publication. You can submit your questions about your resume to resumereminders@gmail.com.

Dallas ISD is expanding a program that has proven to significantly reduce the number of disciplinary issues that happen in a classroom. Restorative practices, which was formerly referred to as restorative discipline, is de-

signed to proactively address disciplinary and behavioral issues before they escalate. Dallas ISD piloted restorative practices at six schools last year and is implementing the program at an additional 14 schools this year. The district has also added a restorative practices specialist to help implement the program at the schools. Middle school classrooms that used restorative practices last year saw a 70-percent reduction in in-school suspensions and a 77-percent reduction in out-of-school suspensions. “The results so far have just been phenomenal,” said Jay Sheets, the district’s restorative discipline coordinator. “We are thrilled to be able to expand the program

11  this year.” The restorative practices process has students gather in circles in their classrooms when a student is disruptive. Teachers ask questions, and then students – one at a time – have a chance to respond. The goal is to reduce the amount of time students must be disciplined outside the classroom, cutting into valuable instructional time. “Restorative practices is a chance for the students to build a relationship with the teachers,” Sheets said. “And what we’re seeing is, if a student has a relationship with the teacher, a lot of the issues that come across as classroom management and classroom discipline can be solved with the teacher and student.”

LET’S WORK TOGETHER TO HAVE A GOOD SCHOOL YEAR FOR ALL!

Paul. Enough Said Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

I remember reviewing the letters of Paul in bible study. In doing so I was constantly reminded that one cannot look at Paul without really seeing Jesus’ amazing handiwork. Now you need to know that I think Paul is an awesome person when it comes to the story of his life. I haven’t found a biography or autobiography of anyone in or outside of the ‘good book’ who comes close to my admiration for Paul; Jesus notwithstanding. Because the two are so closely associated with one another, I can’t help but consider the impact of this tandem on human history. Just in case someone wants to debate me on this by bringing up the lives of the 12 apostles, I have considered them as well as the prophets and I’m just one of those who is in awe of Paul. A very large part of the bible is devoted to Paul’s building of the early church at a time when who you worshipped was a life and death decision. Sound familiar? See World today… Paul himself says in his letters to the church in Corinth, there was indeed a point to his suffering and persecution and the basis for most, if not all, of what he went through was a by product of his faith in Jesus Christ. It’s another perspective of one of my favorite scriptures. “But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I (Paul) will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:8-10. This kind of thinking and belief led to the eventual proliferation of the church worldwide. It also makes the point of how the lives of so few have impacted

and influenced so many in the world then, and also in the world as we know it today. Forgive me if I find this a rather fascinating fact. Paul is who he is because of his unique one on one encounter with Christ. That encounter changed him and ultimately the world in which we live. If that be true, then our individual encounters with Christ should also have a profound effect on us and the world in which we currently live. It is not unusual for new Christians to come under attack by old friends. It is also not unusual for new Christians to come under the attack of the world, since it is in the world that Satan has some degree of power. I think Paul’s good news is there is a place of refuge for all of us, when this happens. He uses himself as an example to follow. If I surrender my weaknesses to the power of Christ and subjugate my will to that of the Lord’s, then I become empowered to deal with whatever is thrown my way. Life, the Christian life, is funny that way. It places what I have described as a bulls- eye on your back, designed to distinguish you from those non believers around you. It, your faith, also sets you up and apart to do great things in the name of Jesus Christ, my personal Lord and Savior. I guess what I’m really saying is when the going gets extremely tough, check the human being Paul. Like Christ, he’s been through and has experienced the worst that life has to offer. But because of his belief system, he’s experienced the best of God’s promises. It’s like a refresher course and I just wanted to let you know where I go during difficult times. You might also find some answers there. The point I’m trying to make is that in the eyes of God, one’s weaknesses are welcomed opportunities for God to show up and show out. Have you ever wondered why those who have been through so much are able to stand and witness mightily for Christ? Reexamine the reality of God’s grace and you just might get your answer. May God bless and keep you always.

Week of September 21, 2016

State Fair Classic, ber 10 and a victory over Alabama A&M on September 17. PV is looking for a victory on September 24 against Mississippi Valley State. A victory would have them entering the Cotton Bowl with a 3-1 record also. Prairie View Head Coach Willie Simmons, a native of Quincy, Fla., was hired in 2014 becoming the school’s 32nd head coach. Simmons earned a degree in Sports Marketing from Clemson in 2002. He was the fastest football player to graduate at Clemson, accomplishing the milestone in three years. He came to Prairie View A&M after an impressive three-year stint as the offensive coordinator at Alcorn State, winning the 2014 SWAC and SBN Black College National Championships. Grambling Head Coach Broderick Fobbs had an impressive 9-3 record last year leading into his third season at his alma mater also touting a Toyota SWAC Championship. A 1997 graduate of Grambling, he played under the legendary coach Eddie Robinson According to numerous reports, the State Fair Classic’s estimated economic impact exceeds $10 million, something Dallas City officials are pleased about. While thousands flock to town for the game, they admit there’s so much more to the weekend of events than the football game or the battle of the bands between two of the best marching bands in the country. HBCU football games, especially the Classics or Homecoming, are considered to be an experience that includes reunions, fashion shows, pep rallies, high school battle of the bands, golf tournaments, cookouts, comedy shows, concerts, day-long parties that seem to never stop, vendor fairs, parades and tailgate parties. Attendees pack shopping malls for their various outfits, some changing four and five times daily and local restaurants usually have a steady stream of customers. The sidelines are a show of its own. Sure the teams are along the sidelines but there’s so much more as a who’s who of celebrities and elected officials also spend the day at the game. It’s also the place where those running for office feel it’s a good place to show up seeking votes. There’s no telling who will show up at this year’s classic, but the confirmed line-up includes a pregame concert featuring singing sensation Jazmine Sullivan. It’s called ‘the whispering cancer’ and it often goes undetected until too late.

“Ovarian cancer is a silent killer. It has few early warning signs and those can be non-specific, like bloating, indigestion, nausea or weight loss. A woman with these symptoms probably won’t think, ‘this could be ovarian cancer,’” said Jayanthi Lea, MD, a gynecologic oncologist at Parkland Health & Hospital System and Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Although not common – there will be only about 22,000 new cases diagnosed in the U.S. this year, the American Cancer Society estimates – ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths among women, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer in the female reproductive system. It often goes undetected until it has spread within the pelvis and abdomen. At this late stage, the disease is more difficult to treat and is frequently fatal. “Unfortunately, there is currently no screening test for ovarian cancer,” Dr. Lea said. “Pap smears test for cervical cancer, but do not detect ovarian cancer.” September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and both staff and patients at Parkland’s Gynecology Clinic hope more women will become informed about the disease. “Women need to be aware of changes in their bodies,” Dr. Lea said. “If a woman has pelvic pain or other symptoms associated with the disease she should ask her healthcare provider to consider ovarian cancer and see a specialist. The earlier this cancer is found, the better chance she has for survival.” Every weekday, a group of women sit in comfortable reclining chairs in a bright, window-lined room at the Infusion Center in the new Women & Infants Specialty Health Clinic at Parkland. While receiving potent chemotherapy drugs intravenously, they chat and swap stories about their families, lives and their cancer. Lola Ann Ussery, 54, of Garland, arrives at the Parkland clinic at 7:30 a.m. and leaves around 4 p.m. on her treatment days. She was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer in April 2015. Ussery initially thought she had constipation, but when the symptoms became alarming, she went to the doctor and learned she had cancer. After surgery she had chemotherapy for several weeks and was doing well. But in June this year, the cancer recurred and she is undergoing her second round of chemo. “The first time, I was in shock more than anything, but I had a lot of fight in me. This time, it’s been harder, physically and emotionally. But I’ve got a lot family and friends supporting me and the staff at Parkland has been a ‘10.’ They take amazing care of you. They give you confidence and encouragement.”

Ussery received an innovative therapy available for Parkland patients called intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy, which delivers drugs directly into the abdominal cavity. “This treatment has been shown to significantly extend the lives of appropriate patients with advanced ovarian cancer,” Dr. Lea stated. Debra Richardson, MD, a gynecologic oncologist at Parkland and Assistant Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at UT Southwestern, said that Parkland patients are encouraged to participate in clinical trials testing new drugs. “I am inspired by working with ovarian cancer patients and watching them fight their battles,” Dr. Richardson said. “Our patients are very courageous and strong. Many of them choose to participate in clinical trials because there’s always hope that new drugs will prolong survival rates and eventually find a cure.” “We are always trying for remission and that is definitely possible with our current treatments,” Dr. Lea added. “Every patient should shoot for that.” Each about the size of an almond, the ovaries produce eggs (ova) as well as the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Symptoms of ovarian cancer may include abdominal swelling, weight loss, discomfort in the pelvis area, changes in bowel habits, such as constipation, and a frequent need to urinate. Risk factors of the disease include having the BRCA1 or BRCA 2 gene, early onset of menstruation, late onset of menopause, a family history of ovarian cancer, advancing age – most patients are diagnosed at age 60, and no history of pregnancy. Protective factors that help lower risk include use of birth control pills, breastfeeding, tubal ligation, hysterectomy and pregnancy. Treatment depends upon the stage at which the cancer is found, but usually involves surgery and chemotherapy. Doctors recommend every woman have an annual health screening exam, know the symptoms of ovarian cancer and be their own health advocate. With two daughters and two granddaughters, Ussery urges them to be aware of their bodies. “Listen to those warning signs,” she said. “Women definitely need to learn the symptoms of ovarian cancer.” “The most common thing I hear from patients is deep frustration because their cancer may have been diagnosed earlier if they and their physicians had recognized the early warning signs,” Dr. Richardson said. The American Cancer Society recommends that if you have symptoms similar to those of ovarian cancer almost daily for more than a few weeks and they can't be explained by other more common conditions, report them to your healthcare professional – preferably a gynecologist – right away. Kaepernick speaks up, forces fans to confront racism in America

[FINALCALL.COM/NNPA]

“I’m not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” This bold declaration by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick at a press conference following a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers set off a firestorm that shows no signs of abating. Mr. Kaepernick, 28, explained after cameras caught him sitting during the playing of the national anthem, that he was protesting police brutality and institutional racism reflected in stark disparities between Blacks in America

and their White counterparts. “People don’t realize what’s really going on in this country. There are a lot things that are going on that are unjust,” Mr. Kaepernick explained to a gaggle of reporters. “People aren’t being held accountable. And that’s something that needs to change. That’s something that this country stands for freedom, liberty and justice for all. And it’s not happening for all right now.” Kaepernick continued: “I’ll continue to sit. I’m going to continue to stand with the people that are being oppressed. To me this is something that has to change. When there’s significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it’s supposed to represent, this country is representing people the way that it’s supposed to, I’ll stand.” Mr. Kaepernick, a Milwaukee native, hammered rogue

cops. He said he, like many Black men, has been stopped by police and recalled when he and a friend were moving out of a house while in college. They were the only two Blacks in the neighborhood and neighbors called the police who came into their apartment uninvited with guns drawn. “There’s a lot of things that need to change. One specifically? Police brutality. There’s people being murdered unjustly and not being held accountable,” he said. “People are being given paid leave for killing people. That’s not right. That’s not right by anyone’s standards.” When asked if he was concerned that his position could be seen as a blanket indictment of law enforcement in general, Mr. Kaepernick replied: “There is police brutality. People of color have been targeted by police. So

that’s a large part of it and they’re government officials. They are put in place by the government. So that’s something that this country has to change.” “There’s things we can do to hold them more accountable. Make those standards higher. You have people that practice law and are lawyers and go to school for eight years, but you can become a cop in six months and don’t have to have the same amount of training as a cosmetologist. That’s insane. Someone that’s holding a curling iron has more education and more training than people that have a gun and are going out on the street to protect us.” Police union leaders were incensed, demanded an apology and in San Francisco, police officers are threatening to boycott Niners games.

DeSoto High School joins movement

Photo: Tailor Phillips

The DeSoto High School volleyball team knelt during the National Anthem prior to their game earlier this week. The teammates were supported by their coach, school board trustee president Carl Sherman and other community leaders. In a written statement, Mr. Sherman said, “In DeSoto, we teach our students to become thought leaders and active participants in their educational process. While their actions may make some people uncomfortable, I applaud these students for exercising their First Amendment rights in a civil, non-confrontational way. None of us have the right to infringe on the rights extended to our young people as American citizens. I am thankful for our coaches and administrators who allowed our students to take the road less traveled. It is my prayer that it makes all the difference for our students, our community and these United States of America.”
