Dallas ISD names new Assistant Police Chief

Assistant Police Chief Jason Rodriguez

The Dallas ISD Police Department recently announced that Lieutenant Jason Rodriguez has been promoted to Assistant Police Chief. Rodriguez has been on the force for 11 years. With a BA from Sam Houston State University and a Masters Degree from Amberton University. Rodriguez is also a graduate from the FBI National Academy, the Law Enforcement Management Institute Leadership Command College, and a part of the 42nd class for Leadership Dallas. “I am humbled by this opportunity to serve our students and employees as Assistant Police Chief,” Rodriguez said. Rodriguez is the first Hispanic appointed to be a part of the Police Executive Staff for the Dallas ISD Police Department.

Smith Elementary gets donation from chief internal auditor

The Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO) honored Dallas ISD Chief Internal Auditor Mike Singleton as a 2016 TASBO Commitment to Excellence Finalist. Singleton, in turn, chose Larry G. Smith Elementary School’s Roaring Readers program as the recipient of the $1,000 donation. Singleton presented the check to Smith Elementary Principal Lora Morris on Tuesday, Aug. 30. “This goes a long way toward helping promote literacy in our community,” Morris said. Smith Elementary School donated 2,300 books to students last year. The school hosts a family literacy night that provides books to everyone who walks through the door. The donation will help provide those books this year. “When I received the TASBO award, I couldn’t think of a better way to use the donation than toward helping kids read,” Singleton said.

Each year, TASBO selects an outstanding TASBO member, who demonstrates consistent leadership within the organization and their profession. He considers his greatest contribution to be the development of the TASBO vision and mission. Along with the Commitment to Excellence Award Recipient Frankie Jackson from Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Singleton and Midland ISD’s David Garcia were honored at TASBO’s Annual Conference Awards Luncheon on March 3, 2016 in Dallas. “In appreciation of our partnership with TASBO we are committing $5,000 to this year’s award recipients. We will donate $3,000 to the 1st place recipient’s home district and an additional $1,000 each to the remaining finalists,” said Matthew Foxhall, Regional Senior Vice President for AXA, who sponsors the award.

Church donates backpacks, school supplies to Blair Elementary Leslie Moore got an unexpected call on her way to work – a Richardson church wanted to take donated backpacks and school supplies to W.A. Blair Elementary School that morning. Just after 9:30 on Wednesday morning, Aug. 24, a black SUV loaded with items pulled to the front of the school. The bounty came as a donation from First Baptist Church of Hamilton Park. Pastor Gregory Foster, staff and church members dropped off the donations. There are about 100 backpacks and the school supplies to fill them. The church has donated to schools for the past 15 years or so. Staff member Gail Stein said that one of their families has a child who attends the school. She recalls that member saying that they knew of a school in need. “Well, you know what? We’re a church family that’s going to bless,” she said.

Nearly all the students who attend Blair qualify for free or reduced lunches. “We have so many students who are in need,” said Moore, the school’s counselor. “Knowing you have come through for so many students – not just one or two – that truly helps bridge the gap so the kids can continue to learn.” The donation was made through the church’s Annie Pearl Foster Center for Youth Enrichment. The Dance Council is honoring Ms. Young for achieving a solid performance career in contemporary modern dance. Ms. Young has spent 23 years of her career at Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT), first as a dancer, Rehearsal Director, then as Academy Director, and now Associate Artistic Director. She is a graduate of The Ailey School in New York City and trained as an exchange student at Amsterdam School of the Arts in Amsterdam, Netherlands. “Melissa has been an invaluable part of Dallas Black Dance Theatre,” said Dallas Black Dance Theatre Founder Ann Williams. “Her attention to artistic detail has helped DBDT reach 40 years as an organization, while maintaining our performance excellence.” Her most notable performances include: The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors in New York City, and for the U.S. Ambassadors to Ireland and Zimbabwe. She has restaged and rehearsed the diverse repertoire of DBDT, which spans over 70 ballets. Ms. Young’s professional training includes Ballet, Modern (Horton and Graham), Jazz techniques and West African Dance. Alison, like many young women, trains a jaundiced eye on Hillary partly because of Bill Clinton’s 1994 Crime Bill. Alison, like many of her Millennial counterparts and my own generation give my girl, Hillary the “side eye.” And yes, Hillary Rodham Clinton is my girl; my ride or die chick; my regardless. This fabrication that the institution of Mass Incarceration is Hillary’s fault is a New Jack Lie. A lie like most of the convenient fallacies that come from the “Conservative Fable Factory.” Before I heard a presidential campaign speech Bill Clinton gave in Dallas in 1990, I heard about Hillary. The “word” from Arkansas came that Bill was “A good enough ol’ boy, but he needed to lasso that “Nigger lovin’, Feminist wife of his.” That was from a local Democratic Party operative. Hillary has been demeaned, derided and flat-out lied about more than any politician in history…Period. New Jack City was a re-enactment of the violent drug trade and rampant crack addiction that still grips America. Crack trafficking created untenable living conditions in minority communities. While middle class Blacks were chasing White folks into the suburbs, we left our grandmothers and the children of our poorest women in the heart and firestorm of the crack cocaine battlefields. The 1994 Crime Bill wasn’t crafted in a covert laboratory; it was part of that “Get Tough on Crime” residue leftover from the Reagan era. Here’s how a Slate Magazine article described its passage earlier this year. “On one level, there was grassroots mobilization of the community, particularly by black pastors. There was a group of influential black pastors who signed a letter encouraging the Congressional Black Caucus to support the bill. And then later, on top of

that, black elected officials, who portrayed themselves at various points as uncomfortable with some of these laws, went along anyway because of pressure coming from their communities, and because they also realized the problem was so bad.” Now Hillary Clinton apologized for using the term “Super Predator,” but most African Americans had much harsher words than that. The complaining old man in New Jack City called them “idolaters” whose souls were required in Hell!! Maybe you forgot, but the crack cancer metastasized in our communities and introduced some brand new terrifying crime methods. Who knew before this epidemic what a “drive-by shooting” or “carjacking” was? It wasn’t just the peddlers and open air turf battles; the drug-addicted users were stealing and killing in the homes of their own families. Trapped neighborhoods watched as innocent bystanders, dealers, runners, lookouts and worst of all; our families and communities died. We saw children lose mama and daddy in the same felony indictment. The burglar bar business was booming and not even the sanctified temples of God were spared. But let’s talk about personal responsibility for the incarceration of our people. Because honestly my most embarrassing moments were suffered during the jury selection process. Too many of us shunned voting to avoid being called for jury service, and if called, lied (in contempt of our court system) to avoid serving. If “White folks” sent our children to jail then most of us are complicit by omission. The legacy of Mass Incarceration leaves none of us without a spot or a wrinkle. “Christians” and religious folks aren’t perfect, so where would we find perfect politicians? Vote your conscious; but make sure you aren’t unconscious to the whole truth. This particular New Jack Lie needs to stop.

NABJ Regional Conference Basic Trainings; I could count on George for life-altering and enriching experiences. He wrote the book on the late, great Jake Gaither, but I had to make sure he knew that I interviewed the coach and wrote a story while a student at Florida A&M University. I would jokingly tell him, paraphrasing the coach, that I too liked my men, â&#x20AC;&#x153;mobile, agile and hostile!â&#x20AC;? When he received the NABJ Journalist of the Year Award in 2003, it was an emotional time for him as he shared it with his good friend Gerald Boyd, who had been going through some tough times. I felt honored to have nominated George for the prestigious award. Fellow board member Meta Mereday recently reminded me of our combined efforts during the voting process. He was so deserving. As I traveled to Georgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s celebration of life in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help but feel sad at times. Then something that he said or did would flash across my mind and I wouldlaugh uncontrollably. Yes he could imitate James Brown, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and you, too! And donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let him get on the dance floor! Georgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legacy is intact. He spoke truth to power. He lifted as he climbed. He gave a voice to the voiceless. Our soldier without a sword. What a blessing!

Donald Trump’s new CEO Stephen Bannon is a slash and burn artisan whose political knowledge is neither exceptional nor intriguing. No, Bannon just has a penchant for grabbing the headlines that feed America’s belligerent underbelly. Before his promotion to Trump’s “Neo-Russian “Third Reich,” Bannon served as the mastermind of Breitbart News

which incidentally, has hubs in California, London, Jerusalem and Texas. Very succinctly, Breitbart is an online yellow journalism peddler that arrived in 2007 as Barack Obama was being taken seriously as a presidential candidate. Breitbart is a thinly veiled communications epicenter for White Supremacists who hate Jews, immigrants, and the LGBT. Google what Breitbart did to ACORN. Or Google the Alt-Right and how Breitbart loathes the non-Tea Party wing of the GOP. Breitbar t.com is a form of AP or Reuter’s wire source for White Nationalism. Breitbart.com didn’t invent racism; they just make racism better. My grandmother taught by euphemism. She would oft say that problem people “bear watching.” Trump and every crater in his blighted universe must be carefully scru-

tinized. The people who have trained a keen eye on clannish activity since 1971, the Southern poverty Law Center, monitors Bannon and Breitbart and are leery of Breitbart’s racially tinged content. Here’s my preemptive admission. My readers know that my ADHD has succumbed to OCD and is latched to Donald Trump. But in my mind, the cultural whiplash from “Trumpism” will be akin in size and scale to

those historic moments before the Civil War and the hate-filled murder of Abraham Lincoln. We are at or near the racial and political pitch that Texas, and particularly Dallas was in right before JFK was silenced.

We are at the teeming temperature of hatred and hubris that was sweltering in 1968 when MLK and RFK each met their political detractors and their personal demise. Trumpism is not amusing! Every scribe dabbles in hyperbole, but my belief is that Trumpism will be a staple of American politics for the next decade. McCarthyism and Goldwater Conservatism ain’t got nuthin’on “The Donald.” In victory or in defeat, Trump’s ilk of insolence, intolerance, insurrection and willful ignorance will not evaporate. This persistent pricking on the tender scab of America’s greatest sore (racism) is going to be open and susceptible to disease for quite some time. Ok, you thought the other comment was sensationalism, so here’s another off the same Breitbart wire. ResistandRebel: “It is hilarious how butthurt the feral negro’s are about a few dead mongrels! It is

Thanks for your overtures Mr. Trump. In the wake of the continued outrages of police shootings, the effort to raise awareness of the need for a sound financial foundation for Black America has gained momentum across the country. The USBC’s Bank-Black awareness campaign, launched in conjunction with the National Bankers Association, has supplied much of the energy. We feel especially gratified about the hundreds of thousands of new account holders at America’s Black-owned banks. Since the USBC’s inception as the “Voice of Black Business,” increasing access to capital was incorporated into our mission statement. Increased deposits in Black financial institutions are critical components in alleviating this

longstanding challenge to business growth and expansion. At the same time, though, we are concerned that Bank Black will get pushed to the back corner of the nationwide Black conscience when the latest, hottest “hashtag” movement comes along. We cannot afford - literally - to fail to maintain/sustain the energy behind this hyper-important strategic plank. We also cannot afford to understand the fact that the simple act of moving deposit accounts to Black banks is only part of the effort to grow Black-owned businesses. If Black America moved ALL of its trillion-plus dollars of income to Black-owned banks without changing our spending patterns we will have missed the single biggest opportunity to change Black America since the Civil Rights Era. To our point, this is serious business. Without the availability of capital for expansion, businesses will struggle. There is ample evidence that Black-owned banks continue to lead the way in extending loans to Black business, despite the few numbers of them across the country. The giant, “too-big-to-fail” financial institutions have proved to be far better at lip service than at actually putting Black depositors’

money to work in the communities from which they draw deposits. Our deposits in Black-owned financial institutions put tremendous pressure on big banks to change their lending patterns. When we fail to make the con-

“A race that is solely dependent upon another for its economic existence sooner or later dies.” Marcus Garvey nection between patronizing Blackowned businesses - even in the face of less than stellar customer service (a frequent complaint of those whose commitment is to the “fad” nature of social media activism) - we fail to understand the importance of successful, profitable Black-owned

businesses. We at the USBC love to point out that if all Black-owned businesses in America were able to hire one new employee we will eliminate black unemployment completely. Black-owned businesses - including Black banks - need our unqualified support! Understand that the customer service you’ve grown to expect is a function of your money at work. When we patronize Blackowned businesses at the same rate we spend at other businesses we will get the same customer experience. When we deposit our dollars in Black-owned banks at the same rate we currently deposit in big banks, we will see them able to provide online banking, expanded ATM coverage and more loans to black-owned businesses. Access to a line of credit has long been an issue for Black business owners and individuals. We know first-hand the challenges and barriers facing Black individuals who are seeking business and/or personal funding. To remedy this problem we forged a partnership with one of the nation’s most trusted and historic Black-owned banks, to offer access to a line of credit through Liberty Bank.

We have to understand that making history is difficult... ask U.S. Rep. John Lewis and other stalwarts of the Civil Rights Era. Read and understand the history of banking pioneers as early as 1888. (side note: Think about it - there were enough Black-owned businesses 20 years after the Civil War to need a Black-owned bank!) If Black America is serious about harnessing our ever-growing spending power...if Black America is serious about expanding access to capital for Black-owned businesses...if Black America is truly committed to building a sound financial foundation for our communities nationwide, then Bank Black is the most effective tool at our disposal. It’s serious business, y’all! Keep making those deposits in Blackowned banks and support blackowned businesses! Look for exciting news about USBC’s groundbreaking new credit card program with Liberty Bank-- It’s a game changer for our community. In the spirit of success. She’s awkward, uncoordinated and too fat to be in the Olympics. Her laugh is so loud it makes my skin crawl and I have never, ever seen her exercise. Her mother is getting on my last nerve. She’s collecting money from the family for her daughter to start gymnastic lessons. She said it’s expensive and she needs help. Help? For what? A teenage fat farm? My niece is not, let me repeat, not Olympic material. I am embarrassed and I’m not trying to give her any of my hard earned money and neither should anyone else in the family. I’m sure I can use Facebook, but how else can I let all our friends and family know they should not contribute to this disaster? Columbia, South Carolina, shortly after her birth her family moved to Orangeburg, South Carolina, where her father, Elliott Lee Stewart, cut timber to build The Colored Normal, Industrial, Agricultural, and Mechanical College of South Carolina, now South Carolina State University. Mae Cora is a proud graduate of the 1937 class of South Carolina State University, and remains active in the DFW SCSU Alumni Association, serving as the speaker at their first scholarship banquet in 2016. It was at South Carolina State that she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in its first pledge class of 1934. After 82 years as member of DST, she is still active in the projects of the Fort Worth Alumna Chapter of DST, meeting monthly to package articles to give to needy seniors. Mae Cora has been selected to be featured on the 2017 South Carolina State University National Alumni Association Stellar Alumni Calendar She began student teaching in the Orangeburg South Carolina public schools while a college student at what was then South Carolina State College. Her first teaching job following college was in a public school in Gaffney, South Carolina, followed by stints teaching at Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, SC, and at Georgia State, now Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia. While obtaining her Masters degree in Education from the Rackham School of Education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, she also did student teaching in Inkster, MI She left teaching for a while, and worked for the Methodist Missions in New York City. It was while in New York that she interviewed, and was hired, for a position as the Executive Secretary of the Crump Street Branch YWCA for Colored women in Fort Worth, TX. She brought energy and her interest in advocating for education with her when she took on her role at the Y in 1943. The Y provided empowerment events for women of color, programs for teens, and business and professional women’s training. Mae Cora also

was a speaker for the Y, informing the African American community about the work of the Y. One of the members of the Board of Management of the Crump Street Y was Mrs. Nellie Webb Peterson. She invited Miss Stewart to her home for dinner. It was there that she met her future husband, James Edward Peterson, Sr.

Little Cora grew up to do big things, living a life of service.

Following their marriage in 1947, and the birth of their children, she returned to teaching, at Paul Laurence Dunbar Jr.-Sr. High School in Fort Worth ISD. Following her first year of teaching, Mae Cora was asked to become the first Dean of Girls (later called Vice Principal) at Dunbar. She counseled, mentored, and guided male and female students at Dunbar for 27 years before retiring in 1980. Still, that was not the end of her service to her community. Mae Cora and two other former dean of girls, Hazel Harvey Peace, and Robinette Spates, served as the Scholarship committee for the Greater Fort Worth Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club for many years, selecting recipients for their annual scholarship.

She also became active in her husband’s retiree organization –the National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees, where she was made an honorary member, serving as treasurer. Her activism in AARP addressing hunger, led to her appointment to the Board of Directors of Senior Citizens Services of Greater Tarrant County. She is a staunch advocate for the programs that support seniors in Tarrant County and became a member of Senior Citizens’ leadership group, Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), training seniors to take active roles in community affairs. Her consistent involvement with Senior Citizens Services resulted in one of their Senior Spirit Awards being named in her honor. Now in its fourth year, The Mae Cora Peterson Healthy Aging Award is given annually to an entity that has provided services to sustain the health of seniors. She was a long time member of Mount Zion Baptist Church where she played the piano for Sunday morning devotion, and taught a Sunday School class. After moving her membership to Broadway Baptist Church, she became a regular in the Baptist Center, working in its May Street Market where families come to “shop” for food. She loves helping them make their selections of groceries that are given by the church. Mae Cora’s dedication to education and support of her community has resulted in her being recognized by a number of organizations. She has been named a Dr. Marion Brooks Living Legend in education, a Phenomenal Woman in Education by the Psi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, has been awarded The Sojourner Truth Award, the highest national award given by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, and most recently received the Founded on Faith Award as an educator by Tarrant Churches Together.

The best part of this film is the ending. It’s sweet. Matter of fact, there’s nothing sour at all as viewers get a glimpse into the lives and love story of one of the world’s most famous couples, President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama. With the strength of Michelle Obama’s being in her mental repertoire, Tika Sumpter delivers, playing the ambitious young lawyer looking to validate her place in a white and male-dominated firm without any utterance of impropriety. “I didn’t want to imitate her,” Sumpter said. “I wanted to embody the essence of her.” Sumpter, along with Parker Sawyers who plays Barack Obama and 31-year-old director Richard Tanne, spoke during a panel discussion that followed the screening of the film at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) / National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) joint convention held recently in Washington, DC. Southside with You chronicles the first date of the future first couple. The movie takes its time, allowing moviegoers the chance to stroll alongside Barack and Michelle. “I was really struck by the way they look at each other, they way that they date and care about each other,” Tanne said. That wasn’t the only striking moment. Almost the entire theater gasped during the first scene in which Sawyers portraying Barack Obama was revealed. His hands told the story. ABOUT THAT CAR: 2017 Chrysler Pacifica

AUBURN HILLS, MI – We were so impressed with the spin that we took more or less around the block in the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica that we asked for a longer test drive. We got our first up close look at the Pacifica during a brief show and tell here at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ headquarters. Never mind the hype about Chrysler newest minivan and there was plenty of it. Three things grabbed our attention. The spaciousness of the Pacifica was eye-catching. There was tall glass all round that from the inside simulated a continuous picture window. And there was a three panel panoramic roof. In other words, all three rows of seats had a clear view of the sky.

The next thing that grabbed us was the power. On a really long entrance ramp onto I-75 North, we pushed the pedal almost to the metal and the Pacifica reached 75 mph before we got on the

interstate. The Pacifica had a 3.6 liter V6 that made 287 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. The engine was mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. It had an EPA rating of

18 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg combined. 2017 Chrysler Pacifica When we got in the Pacifica for our short test drive, we thought it was the most comfortable minivan we’d ever been in to date. It had a horizontal dash layout that was clean and fresh. The materials were top notch. It was ergonomically friendly, easy to drive and quiet. The third thing was drivability. It was 250 lbs. lighter than the model it replaced, the Town & Country, and that showed in the way it handled. We need to get the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica to take a longer look.
