CALL FOR APPLICATIONS COST Action TU1204 Summer School City of Vilnius, Lithuania from 26 to 30 September 2016
Culture of Data Production in the City and the Degree it can Evolve to Enable Citizen Collaboration Background At a time of increased urbanization and globalization, cities and urban communities face an equally significant change with increased digital connectivity and generation of large quantities of digital data. The challenge is how best to make good use of the emerging digital world in order to improve livelihood and liveability for people living, working and visiting our cities. The city of Vilnius in Lithuania is an excellent example of early engagement with e- democracy and open data both within the municipality itself and government agencies located within the city such as the Registry, and Energy Companies (e.g., LitGrid). Nevertheless there are enormous opportunities to expand the level of engagement further to bridge the gap between bottom-up and top-down governance structures and processes. In addition, similar to other urban data portals there is a need to make Open Data truly open by presenting it in a more digestible format for ordinary citizens and also to make connections where connections do not already exist. With those challenges and opportunities in mind, a Summer School is being organised by COST Action TU1204 ‘People-Friendly Cities in a Data Rich World’ in partnership with Vilnius Municipality, Lithuanian Registry and VGTU. The Summer School will take the format of lectures, briefings and periods of independent learning under the theme of translating the culture of data production into greater citizen collaboration.
