How did Recruiting Erasmus come about?
Have there been similar experiences in Europe?
PeopleMatters provides professional human resources consulting services. In order to offer value to our clients, we carry out studies of the most important trends in the labor market. Our research reveals that in Spain, for some time, less and less young people have been accessing the labor market, and increasingly less university graduates are able to find employment. In 2007, we noted that the values and attitudes of young people with respect to employment did not correspond to what employers sought. There was a large gap. This led us to reflect on the “special” groups of students and we realised that students with international experience could be a highly attractive target for employers, not only in terms of language skills, but also experience. We then began to design our project, which was first implemented in the academic year 2008/2009.
We have researched different countries and have not found any similar experiences. We believe that this is a pioneer initiative in Europe and we will most probably extend it to other countries in future editions.
Why did you focus on international students? We feel that young people who decide to leave their country and their town for a year, have come out of their comfort zone. Their experiences enable them to develop professional competences that are highly attractive to employers. These are not just related to languages, but include flexibility, the ability to “fend for themselves”, their experience in travelling, living with other young people or socializing with people who are not life-long friends.
Employment Magazine
We believe that these young people have something extra to offer than those who have no international experience. Spain needs to improve its global competitiveness and this requires “more global professionals”. For these reasons, we believe that these young people constitute a highly attractive group for our companies.
Why do you believe that the project is important for university students with international experience?
The project has been evolving from its first edition to today. In our new advertising campaign, the students introduce themselves because best-in-class companies are looking for people with international experience just like them, because they are different. We have kept on improving our website and have also developed an app.
We believe that the program enables them to access blue chip companies. It is important for their CVs to be seen and analyzed by this type of companies. Some are Spanish and others are multinational. Some companies offer employment to students during their stay abroad while others offer jobs to those who have finished the experience. At a time of economic uncertainty and scarcity of jobs, we feel that the program constitutes a magnificent opportunity for young people to initiate a career in the most elite corporations.
Have you received support from the universities?
How many young people found employment this year?
When we initiated the project, we were not aware of the complexity behind the international programs. We approached the Ministry of Education which advised us to go from “university to university” seeking their endorsement for the project. Some of them supported us right from the start, such as the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid which incorporated all of its international students into the program. The university sends the students an email inviting them to join the initiative and posts information about the program on its website. We are currently undertaking the ninth edition of Recruiting Erasmus, with support from the CICUE (Commission for the Internationalization and Cooperation of Spanish Universities), the Ministry of Education and 86 public and private universities as well as participating business schools. We have expressed our gratitude to the universities which have supported us in promoting the program by dedicating some spaces in this Employment Magazine to them. Also, we have the institutional support of CRUE (Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities).
We don’t know the exact figure. What we do know is that in the first edition we had 8 partner companies and now we have 17, with many others expressing an interest in offering employment. As in previous years, some professionals are featured in the Employment Magazine who were recruited through Recruiting Erasmus. A new section has been developed and success stories are told at recruitingerasmus.com. All of this indicates that many young people are working or will be working in the coming months thanks to the Recruiting Erasmus website.
How has Recruiting Erasmus evolved?
What are the advantages for the students who sign up to the project? As well as employment, which is the main reason for signing up, students who enroll have access to discounts on many products and services offered by major brands in fashion, technology, home, restaurants, cinemas, shows, etc. This year we have signed agreements with Beroomers, Uniplaces and Set a Foot, all of them online companies that offer products targeted to international mobility students. However, these are “additional” advantages. The main reason for enrolling is to access a channel through which to directly approach leading companies.

MEET YOUR COLLEAGUES —THE PROFESSIONALS THAT MAKE ALL OF THIS POSSIBLE Alba Díaz - Erasmus in Zurich Consulting Analyst I was 20 years old and half way through my university degree: double degree in Law and Business Administration. Going on an Erasmus Program was the perfect opportunity to do something that would really change my life. I spent a whole year in Switzerland and it was one of the best experiences of my life, both academically and personally. This experience helped me develop skills and abilities that are highly valued by companies: languages, the ability to communicate effectively and work in different languages, to work in teams with people from different cultures, and to be much more flexible and tolerant to change. And I have to say that these skills and abilities have been of great help in my professional career at Accenture.
Javier Ulloa - Erasmus in Warsaw Consulting Consultant
Elena Martínez - Erasmus in Helsinki - Digital Analyst The lack of professional experience along with the Spanish economic crisis, prompted me to extend my studies and apply for an Erasmus Scholarship. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to gain some learnings that I was sure would later on be fundamental in my professional career. An Erasmus experience is something all students should do. It helped me get out of my comfort zone and discover that every little effort led me to take a step forward in my professional career. I learned to live and work with other cultures, which has been great because I am applying these skills in my daily work at Accenture and I know they are very valued by the company, my leaders and my colleagues. 15
Antonio Santamaría - Erasmus in Leeds - Technology Analyst
An Erasmus Scholarship is a great opportunity to experiment different experiences: study in an international environment, in another language and with a different methodology than the Spanish one. When I applied, I made a list of preferences based on my interest in the country, the prestige of the university and classes conducted in English.
An Erasmus Scholarship is the perfect complement to the university experience. And marks a before and after in your life. I found out that I could pursue my studies in Computer Engineering at the University of Leeds and this is the destination that I chose. In my profession English is a must so this was the perfect option for me.
The Erasmus Program taught me to solve situations by myself, to deal with unfamiliar situations and environments, to cooperate with people from different nationalities, cultures and backgrounds... in general skills and values that are applicable to the labor market.
For a multinational company like Accenture, candidates who have lived a year abroad are always a great asset. When they hire us, they have the certainty that we can be assigned to international projects, that we can easily communicate and understand the needs of our clients, work with colleagues from all over the world, and undertake assignments that require travelling or even living abroad. These are attributes that contribute not only to the success of the projects and the client’s satisfaction, but to our personal and professional growth.

“WHAT’S WORTH A LOT, COSTS VERY LITTLE” ALDI is one of the major food chains and supermarkets in the world. Based on our strong business concept built up over the course of decades, we are continuing to expand worldwide. ALDI has a very clear objective: to meet the needs of our consumers with a commitment to very high quality at the best prices. This is what we seek to deliver. This principle has given us great success in more than 5,000 retail outlets in the countries where we operate, such as Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark and Poland.
ALDI DNA: Passion for retail! Passion for people! We work every day to become one of the leading supermarket brands and a quality-price benchmark. This is possible thanks to our strong corporate values shared by the entire organization.
ALDI focuses on what is essential: the comfort and functionality of its stores, the high level of self-imposed standards of excellence when choosing the best products and the rating given by its collaborators. Simple, decentralized structures are part of our business culture and a fundamental factor in ALDI’s success. The resulting delegation of responsibility means that in every area of ALDI, people with a passion for retail are motivated to work towards meeting our commitments. We are driven by a clear goal: to ensure our customers’ ongoing satisfaction at all times. As people with a real passion for retail, we are always open to innovation. However, we don’t follow every new trend. First we carry out a thorough check to see if an innovation is consistent with our principles. Then, if it offers value to our customers or helps us to improve as a company, we act on it.
Recruiting Erasmus
Our “ALDI DNA” sets us apart: what does it mean? It means that we are firmly committed to rigor, efficiency, price, quality, objectiveness, proximity and responsibility in our dealings with our customers, collaborators and suppliers. We never promise anything that we are unable to deliver. We never compromise where quality is concerned. Our contracts and agreements are negotiated fairly and geared towards targets. We look beyond short-term profits and seek long-term economic success. We act responsibly and sustainably, and always focus on our customers. What we do and how we do it is “typically ALDI” —it’s just our ALDI DNA.
18
Do you have the ALDI DNA? Are you demanding and on the lookout for a company with a strong brand DNA? Do you want to be entrepreneurial and tackle challenges in a primarily practical working environment? Do you carry a business DNA in your bones, and do you want to grow in your profession with commitment and passion? DESIGN THINKING One of the main design methodologies used in the Lab is called Design Thinking. This process helps resolve creatively the knottiest problems. Its final purpose is to design products and services which are in line with genuine customer requirements, and are technologically and financially viable. This involves a three-stage process:
Inspiration: empathize with users or customers, both real and potential, understand what they are about using market research and market trend studies. The aim at this stage is to discover hidden needs that may lead to new business opportunities Ideation: generate as many ideas as possible by applying offbeat ideas. Now is the time to use new creative techniques and work in multidisciplinary teams to come up with a multitude of different viewpoints. The aim at this stage is to create new concepts which respond to the opportunities detected from the previous stage Implementation: provide prototype solutions to our users and receive their feedback; assess initial design and improve the end product
COMMITMENT, HONESTY AND INITIATIVE Banco Sabadell is much more than just the products and services that we develop and offer to our customers. The way in which we do business is more important to our organisation: people come first. A high-quality, distinctive service is the outcome of a constant search for excellence, driven by a high sense of commitment and honesty, encouraging new solutions that optimise results. The Bank’s sustained growth requires a significant capacity to adapt to change, coupled with initiative and the involvement of all stakeholders. The University of Deusto has an Internationalization Plan whose main objective is to internationalize all university academic processes, including the academic courses, faculties (professors and students) and research. One of the strategies to help the University of Deusto to achieve this objective is an international faculty resulting from, among others, international mobility and stays abroad of professors, researchers, administrative and service staff, as well as students. International mobility ensures that the members of the university community experience first-hand contrasting cultures, traditions, languages and styles, all different from their own. This experience involves a personal and professional transformation which leads to improved performance of daily tasks in an increasingly globalized world. To achieve this primary objective, the University of Deusto is actively promoting cooperation agreements with different universities and institutions across the world. Currently the University of Deusto has signed 986 agreements for the development of mobility actions. While in the early days of the internationalization process of the University, the agreements involved mostly European institutions, nowadays, thanks to the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 program as well the large world-wide network of Jesuit universities that we are part of —over 200 colleges and universities—, we have a full range of mobility options in non-European universities.
Employment Magazine
The overarching objective of our international mobility activities is to ensure that the University of Deusto is an international institution and its community (including professors, students, researchers, administrative and service staff) is equipped with a sound global training background and a deep multidisciplinary character —ready to face the challenges of an increasingly global, interdependent and intercultural world. The University of Deusto agrees with the conclusion from the quantitative research project Erasmus Impact Study conducted by the European Commission with over 80,000 respondents in 2014, which confirmed that international mobility of students increases their employability as well as their international work mobility. The research reveals that 92% of employers seek candidates with the same personality traits that exchange program students develop, i.e., tolerance, problem-solving strategies, curiosity, self-awareness of weaknesses and strengths, and decision-making ability.
The University of Deusto is implementing several actions to ensure we achieve the above objective, including: •
Internationalization of academic courses: introduction of foreign language courses and courses taught in foreign languages; development of joint modules by a university network, accessible from different partner universities; development of summer courses and intensive programs, and joint design of international degrees, master’s and Erasmus Mundus, as well as Ph D programs with co-direction of dissertations
•
Promotion of research internationalization: international perspective and scope built into all Ph D programs; collaboration with international research partners in multiple disciplines; collaboration of foreign researchers on university research; collaboration of foreign students in research; and availability of resources for university researchers to stay in foreign institutions
•
Student internationalization: exchange programs and stays at foreign universities; access required to international sources of knowledge; active support of curricular and extra-curricular internships in foreign institutions
•
Faculty internationalization: technical training at international institutions for information updates; foreign language and culture courses, with mechanisms that motivate involvement in language programs offered and developing partnerships with foreign institutions for advanced language proficiency; invitations to foreign professors to participate in multiple academic programs and research, as well as lectures; participation in international events and publications, with appropriate recognition academically and financially
•
Internationalization of administrative and service staff: foreign language and culture courses as well as short stays at foreign universities to ensure awareness of good practices with a view to enhancing the internationalization process of our university Álvaro de la Rica Aspiunza Vice Chancellor for International Relations

The Erasmus Program, an open door to the working world This year we are celebrating 30 years since the implementation of the Erasmus Program, which has allowed young people to live an experience abroad. Millions of students have been able to do part of their studies or internships at universities or companies away from their place of origin. There are as many stories hidden behind these experiences, as people who have lived them, but most of them agree that it is “a unique experience”, “something that gives you an unimaginable knowledge” and “an adventure that you must live once in your lifetime”.
Employment Magazine
From the moment that someone decides to go on Erasmus, the adventure begins and, with it, the challenges, the learnings, the changes of mindset… Nothing will ever be the same. When we step out of our comfort zone, we reap big rewards. During these months, the students improve their general knowledge, widen their study areas, improve their language skills as they chat with people from different parts of the world, and most importantly, get to understand themselves by breaking language and cultural barriers. The Erasmus experience helps to grow personally and professionally. Leaving behind everything we know, makes us braver and more inquisitive, and clears the mind —a positive value in a company and in life. Also it leads to a new mindset because by living with different cultures, we learn to accept them as we realize the value of tolerance, respect and comprehension. Additionally, it delivers something more valuable in today’s working environment, something that companies value above all —an international profile as citizens of the world. Students learn that there are no barriers, that it is possible to walk freely. All of this will make a difference when it is time to go through the recruitment process. According to the European Commission’s study about the impact of the Erasmus Program (2014), exchange students are half as likely to be unemployed in the long term compared to those who stay in their home country, with an unemployment rate 23% lower. Perhaps part of the reason for the success of the Erasmus students is a new experience that many of them discover while studying abroad and one which is increasingly valued by companies —volunteering. Many universities contribute to creating an unforgettable experience abroad for international students by showing them the power of helping others without expecting anything in return. This is our mission at ESN, Erasmus Student Network, present in more than 500 higher education institutions in Europe. Volunteering not only sheds a new light on internationalization and mobility, but it also helps to blur cultural, linguistic and personal differences. Students have the chance to return to society what they are receiving while learning useful skills for their working life. In the words of Androulla Vassiliou, former European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, “if you study or train abroad, you have more chances to improve your working perspectives”.

BOLOGNA 40
Employment Magazine
Located in Northern Italy, Bologna, with the oldest university in Europe, had to be a good Erasmus destination for my last year in college. My first steps in Bologna were also the hardest —I had to overcome the logistic obstacle of finding accommodation and dealing with the not insubstantial university bureaucracy. With that taken care of and when I least expected it, I found myself totally in love with the charm of Bologna. Maybe it is the leaning towers presiding over the patchwork of endless porticoed streets —they protect you from the merciless heat when you first arrive and from the rain before returning home for Christmas, and take you through its medieval quarter to the city walls. Maybe it is its unique, leading-edge character in a unique country. Maybe it is its green hills with hundreds of trails where you can find refuge from the city center and find something new that never ends. 41
In a word, Erasmus is passion. It is in the eyes of all of us who dared to live this amazing experience which made us use all our problem-solving skills and taught us to overcome obstacles, to live without preconceptions and focus on what truly matters like never before. Bologna and its people captivate you and make you feel you’re at home. This personal journey goes beyond the city as it becomes a multi-cultural river that surrounds you with Erasmus students from all over the world who share the same feeling and helps strengthen the bond with everything around us. Looking back, I realize I wouldn’t be the person I am now without this experience that now helps to define me. It will always be there to help me deal in the best possible way with any new challenge in life. There is still time. Find your destination. Live your own Erasmus experience. You’ll never regret it.

DURANGO
Employment Magazine
United States, land of opportunities, the world’s foremost economic power is much more than big cities, skyscrapers and endless avenues. My 2011-2012 college year gave me the chance to have experiences that changed my way of thinking and doing things forever. The small town of Durango, Colorado, is the home of Fort Lewis College, the university I attended during one of my academic exchanges. Durango is located about 2,000 meters above sea level, so cold weather and snowfalls are common. To make the best of it, I used the opportunity to practice snow sports and learn to snowboard. One of the most valuable things of my stay abroad is how it enriched me culturally. The town is a complex mix of cultures, including native Americans, Latin Americans, mostly from Mexico, and people from everywhere in the country. Adjusting to the country was not difficult at all. The hardest thing was being away from my loved ones, with the added difficulty of the 8-hour time difference. It was a learning experience though, and helped me appreciate the value of a hug or a conversation. Also I made new friends that have left an indelible mark. Living in the United States changed my way of thinking and taught me to think out of the box. I realized that questioning something is not the same as contradicting a professor, that tests are not only about passing but about learning, that classmates teach you as much as professors, and that book contents can be adapted to your learning style. Teamwork, practical lessons, public presentations and new learning technologies have helped me immensely in my professional and personal life, and are very valuable in our work environment.

Kingston is a small town in Ontario, near Toronto, Canada. I chose Kingston as the place for the third academic year of my Business Administration degree after a friend recommended it to me —she fell in love with the country, its universities and its culture. The Canadian culture and its people surpassed my expectations. They are approachable, open and willing to help, which made my immersion into the Canadian way of life very easy. As well as getting to know and experiencing a different culture from my own, my stay in Kingston helped me understand myself better and I learned so much personally and academically. Among many other things, at a personal level I learned to be more independent, it was the first time I had lived away from home for more than a couple of months. I also became more flexible by living in an international residence with over 60 people from different cultures.
45
My stay abroad also allowed me to grow academically. I signed up for all sorts of international business courses to make the most of the multicultural atmosphere and put it all to good use towards my own degree. Working with a different group of people in every class and not knowing anybody in advance enhanced my spirit of initiative and taught me the importance of networking. My study-abroad year is one of the main reasons why I’m part of Accenture today. Everything I learned in Canada has been useful to help me grow professionally, build a more proactive, more independent working style, and work better as part of a team.

Tell us about your international studies and experience I have a diploma in Business Studies, and a degree in Actuarial and Financial Studies. I had several international experiences as a student: •
4 months in Paris, France, in 2006 (first half of my Erasmus year)
•
4 months in Wolverhampton, Great Britain, in 2007 (second half of my Erasmus year)
•
7 months in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2009 (Leonardo Scholarship)
What was the value added of your Erasmus year to your academic experience?
Pablo Velasco
Underwriting Specialist
In addition to learning English and French, it helped me open up my mind. Meeting people from other countries, getting involved with their culture, and understanding their customs and their philosophy of life was very enriching. Academically, it was interesting to discover different educational systems from the Spanish one that focused less on high grades and were more conducive to learning.
What have you been able to transfer from your Erasmus experience to Cigna? Tolerance, communication and, above all, a different perspective on situations. In this regard, I find it essential to look at the problems that we face in our daily life from different points of view. My international experiences have contributed greatly in this sense.
How has your international experience helped you perform your work? Sometimes I’m involved in training sessions and calls with people from the United Kingdom, Belgium and United States. A good knowledge of foreign languages is essential to ensure a smooth, effective communication.

Do you think your international experiences have provided you with a competitive advantage to join this or any other company? My international experience has definitely been a great competitive advantage when searching for work in a global corporate world. Companies increasingly need international profiles, since financial and competitive forces push them to expand geographically if they are to continue growing and diversifying.
What was your international experience like? What skills did it provide you with? I think that my international experience forced me out of my comfort zone, both socially and academically. From one minute to the next I found myself in a city and at a university where I knew nobody and within a very different social and academic culture.
During my stay in Sydney, I learned to interact with what for me were totally unknown cultures, such as the Asian culture. I also developed academic skills which are more highly present in the English speaking world model, such as techniques for presentations and public speaking. The travelling bug got to me too and travel has now become one of my greatest pastimes. Initially, it is difficult to adapt but then it becomes a highly enriching experience.
What would you recommend to those who are studying an Erasmus at the moment?
They should get the most they can out of the experience, instead of falling into the trap of just getting together with Spaniards. Also they should make use of their time to interact with the local population and the other Erasmus students. And travel if the opportunity arises —they will not often get the chance to enjoy such a stimulating experience as the Erasmus Program.
What were your expectations before you joined Gas Natural Fenosa? Bearing in mind how long you have been in the company, do you consider that these expectations have been met?
I joined through a rotational program within the company, and my expectations were mainly focused on gaining experience and finding out about the company through different roles and businesses. After two years of rotation I believe I have a much broader view of the company and I am ready to embrace a new more specialized stage, with different demands. I believe GNF will give me the opportunity to train, pursue a career and maintain a work-life balance.
What is your career in Gas Natural Fenosa like? Do you think GNF promotes the professional development of its employees?
I think GNF is a company with a broad spectrum of opportunities for the development of different professional profiles. Lawyers, economists, engineers‌ within the company there is room and opportunities for them all. GNF helps to reinforce professionalism and talent to build a team of professionals who will be the company’s future leaders.
What expertise/skills does the company appreciate in its employees?
The traditional model of the energy sector is undergoing major changes. In an ever-changing, international and highly competitive climate, GNF values employees who are capable of anticipating and responding to changes. Doing so requires employees with leadership qualities and the ability to embrace new challenges.

BUYER AT ZARA HOME (INDITEX)
Erasmus country Netherlands (Maastricht). Erasmus experience Very positive, in all senses. I improved so much my English and learnt to approach people depending on their culture. I made a lot of friends and gained a huge knowledge —very valuable for my career. The best/worst thing The best was having the chance to meet people, and the experiences and trips we made together… and stroopwafles! (syrup cookies). The worst thing was… fixing my bike almost every week! Your expectations I expected to have a good future opportunity after making a big effort, as I studied a lot to get the best results. I was rewarded with a different and better knowledge than I would have had if I stayed at Coimbra (Portugal). First thing you did back at home I searched for masters abroad. In the end, I came back to Maastricht for another three months, as a volunteer at the University. I wanted to live a bit more in the city as a “common citizen”, not an Erasmus student. Why did you send your CV to Inditex? When faced with the chance to come to Coruña, I didn´t think it twice. I immediately knew I would love the experience to work at an office where people with different backgrounds share the same goal and create new projects as a team. How has your Erasmus experience helped you to be succesful in Inditex? It has allowed me to become open minded and communicate better with all my colleagues. And also to adapt to diverse circumstances, such as moving to a new country and keep my concentration at work at the same time. Did you get a competitive advantage by being an Erasmus student? Absolutely! Maybe not to be selected for a specific position, but for something more important: my own way to see life and to believe I can always do better. After Erasmus I consider everything is possible and less difficult than it seems at first sight. A tip for those who want to join Inditex Have always the ambition to reach something bigger. Any position will allow you to do better and bigger for the future. A positive attitude and facing every project with an open mind are also a must!

Benefiting from globalization is more than acquiring knowledge or developing a more cosmopolitan mindset. The world also needs to speak openly about differences and understand the personal identities of those who shape our professional and personal environments. Leaders of the 21st century must understand and correctly manage diversity if they want to maximize the potential multiculturalism found in organizations. And, what better way to learn how to manage and make the most of today’s diverse environments, than by being exposed to it constantly for a number of years? IE is arguably one of the most international institutions in the world, for students and citizens. Today, it is home to students from 128 countries, and currently 56,000 IE alumni hold positions of responsibility in over 165 countries. Its programs are filled with international content, and our students benefit from a wide array of exchange programs that help boost their career opportunities in a global environment. Its practice-based approach starts in the classroom, and continues in different parts of the world to fully prepare students to become truly international professionals. In addition to sharing a classroom with students from all over the world, IE University gives the chance, and encourages, students to participate in internships and international exchanges. We have agreements with more than 95 prestigious universities in 30 countries, allowing students to spend a semester abroad in a unique mix of study, travel and life experiences. Students from other universities also have the chance to spend a semester at IE University, which has hosted more than 250 visiting students this year.

Destinations are assigned in a competitive process held twice a year, based on merits such as student’s GPA, language proficiency, etc. “Going abroad and leaving your comfort zone is an essential experience in order to develop personal skills on a global scale. It was very important for me to have this kind of international mobility as a solid foundation within my studies, as it defined my individual career path”. Erasmus+: 30 years of success The original programme began in 1987 as an exchange programme offering university students the opportunity to learn and enrich their lives by studying abroad. The programme’s scope and importance have increased over the last 30 years. It now encompasses all educational sectors and it has extended beyond Europe to include practically all countries worldwide. There is general agreement that international mobility from the Erasmus Programme, now called Erasmus+, is one of the most tangible achievements of European integration. Jorge Semprún pointed this out when he stated that the best initiative the European Union had implemented over its 60 years of existence was the Erasmus Programme, for its contribution to creating an awareness of European citizenship. Manuel Marín endorsed this by stating “Erasmus is an example of what good Europe means”. Since its launch in 2014, Erasmus+ has allowed two million people from all educational sectors to benefit from its opportunities for study periods, internships or voluntary opportunities, acquiring experience abroad. Over the last 30 years a total of five million people have been enriched thanks to Erasmus+, opening their minds and facilitating opportunities to all of them.
Employment Magazine
Over the years, European mobility has helped countless young Spaniards to grow up knowing the genuine significance of European identity. Until 2014 over 500,000 Spanish students in higher education participated in the Programme, out of a total of 3.3 million students. The results of the Programme’s benefits are spectacular. In 2014 the European Commission published an evaluation study on the impact of the Erasmus+ Programme on student skills and employability, and the internationalisation of higher education institutions, with the following main conclusions: •
It helps young people to find employment: Erasmus+ increases the employability of young people, enabling them to improve their skills and experience, and boosting their self-esteem
•
1 in every 3 Erasmus+ internship students gains employment in the company where they had their internship
•
It builds up feelings of European citizenship: Erasmus+ brings Europeans closer as they learn, work and cooperate together, promoting active participation in society
•
83% of students who took part in higher education programmes state that their feelings regarding European citizenship increased after a study period abroad thanks to the Erasmus+ Programme
•
Erasmus+ promotes social inclusion: the programme is open to everyone, offering finance and additional support for people from underprivileged backgrounds and immigrants
•
A third of the participating young people are those with fewer opportunities
•
It enables free circulation of people. Erasmus+ helps people to develop an international outlook
After an Erasmus+ experience, participants are more motivated to travel abroad to study, complete internships and voluntary work or even to work, and companies worldwide appreciate this international experience. The importance of the Erasmus+ Programme for Spain and vice versa should not be underestimated, as the European programmes have significantly contributed to the modernisation of our educational institutions, being key to their internationalisation, and have been extremely relevant in improving our students employability. Significantly, between 1987 and 2014, 647,450 Spanish students from all educational sectors were selected for these programmes. During these 30 years in the higher education sector, over 625,000 students and over 60,000 members of the teaching staff and administration participated in the programme. Since 2001, Spain has been the uninterrupted European leader in receiving Erasmus students, demonstrating its huge appeal as a country and as a higher education venue. Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Italy follow in rank. Five out of the ten universities in Europe which received the most participants were Spanish. The University of Granada ranked first, followed by the University of Valencia, the Complutense University of Madrid, the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the University of Barcelona. To conclude, I would like to say the overwhelming success of the Erasmus+ Programme in Spain is due not just to the university community or other educational centers, but also to society itself. The unprecedented numbers of students participating in the Programme is the result of the efforts made in Spain by the entire educational community in promoting the mobility of its students and professionals, together with the internationalization of its institutions. Between 2017 and 2020, Erasmus+ will be offering opportunities to over two million people throughout Europe and worldwide, and we will continue working to enjoy another 30 years of Erasmus+.

Segundo PĂriz President, Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities 76
The increasing internationalization of academic activity, in a changing global environment, is an important challenge for universities. In this sense, one of the priorities for Spanish universities is to promote international experience, in particular significant periods abroad, for their students. International experiences add value to the student’s personal and professional development. The Erasmus Program as well as others relating to study abroad experiences help to increase language, cultural and intercultural, academic, professional, and personal competences. Mastering another language is often identified as a key goal, but in fact the greatest impact comes from the experience of living in and with a different culture and a different educational system. This helps students to see their own culture in a different light, to become more adaptable and flexible, and to develop other valuable skills which are highly demanded in an increasingly globalized labor market both in Spain and abroad. Indeed, according to a European Commission report, 41% of Spanish Erasmus students were offered a job during their internships, confirming once again how an international experience can help students when they seek their first employment.
Employment Magazine
Spanish universities believe all students should be able to enjoy an international experience, regardless of their socio-economic situation, in order to improve the quality of their education and their opportunities in an ever competitive labor market both at home and abroad. For that reason, a great effort has been made to support student participation in international mobility programs, particularly the largest of them all, the European Commission’s Erasmus Program. Spain is the European leader in participation both as home and as host country in the Erasmus Program, with steadily increasing numbers over the past decade. In 2013/2014 there were 39,277 Erasmus mobilities from Spain for study periods and for internships, representing 14% of the total in Europe. The success of the program has continued under Erasmus+, the umbrella program which since January 2014 has combined all the EU’s mobility grants for students and staff in all sectors of education. In comparison with previous versions of the Erasmus Program (Socrates, Lifelong Learning Program, etc.), the 2014-2020 Erasmus+ Program promises reinforced support for intra-European internships, allowing students to combine international and professional experience in one period abroad. Spanish universities are keen to see this aspect of the
Academic excellence goes hand in hand with international mobility
program further developed in the future. Also the program opens up the possibility of mobility experiences beyond the 33 participating countries, building on the experience of previous EU programs such as Tempus, Alfa or Erasmus Mundus. This is an option with enormous potential for students and our universities in today’s globalized world, and one which Spanish universities hope to see consolidated and further developed, particularly in the rest of the Spanish-speaking world. Recruiting Erasmus is an excellent example of how Spanish universities promote international experiences for their students. The program connects young talent with employers, tapping into the potential created by the Erasmus+ and other mobility programs, and facilitating our young graduates’ contact with participating employers. The success of the program lies in its promoters’ identification of the added value of the mobility experience and is yet another confirmation of the huge impact which international mobility experiences have on our graduates’ educational experience and skills set.

Employment Magazine
During my final university year, I had the opportunity to participate in an exchange program with the Polytechnic School of Montreal (Canada). I had studied for my whole degree in my home town so this was the first time I spent time away from home. I arrived in mid-winter, when everything was snow-covered, and left just when it was beginning to melt. Actually, everyone had made me so afraid of the cold that it didn’t seem so much of a big deal in the end. Everything is so climate-proof (underground city included), that you only notice the cold when you spend a lot of time outside in the elements. The language came as a surprise. I had already taken on board that I had to make myself understood in French, but I didn’t realize that the accent in the Quebec region is completely different from the one I had studied at school. I gradually got used to it. And yes, the locals live up to their reputation and are charming —at least they certainly seemed so to me. 79
I really liked the city. There is a university ambience, people everywhere, and it’s a perfect size —large enough to offer lots of things to do but never oppressive. My best memory is of the people I met and the experiences I had. There were seven of us in the flat, each from a different country, and each of us really different in our own way, but we were like one great big family. Three years have gone by, but thinking of them still brings a smile to my face.

I would recommend this experience to absolutely everyone, from the adventurous to those afraid to do something new. You learn a lot and it opens up your mind, ridding you of stereotypes you sometimes don’t even know you have.

RIGA 80
Employment Magazine
One of the main reasons to choose Riga as my destination was so I could discover a different culture in a welcoming capital. Riga is a charming city, full of Art Nouveau buildings and beautiful churches and cathedrals. The Latvians are highly extrovert and happy to intermix with the Erasmus crowd. The young people also have a very good English, which makes cultural immersion easy. Another advantage of Riga compared with other European cities is the cost of life. It’s far lower than most European capitals. When I was an Erasmus student, I was able to live comfortably on the grant I received. Academically, the Riga Business School offered a very different study method from the one I had been used to in Spain. This system is based on business cases, presentations and team work, similar to MBA courses, and from my viewpoint, far more practical and employment focused. I loved the possibility of travelling to places I had never thought of visiting before, like Tallinn, Vilnius, Helsinki and Saint Petersburg —when snow laden, they are an incredible experience.
81
Lastly, I must mention one of the most striking factors for any newly-arrived Spaniard —the climate. Winters are incredibly cold, with barely six or seven hours of daylight and around -20 degrees. Yet these conditions do not prevent people from enjoying life to the full and being active every day. In contrast, summers are really pleasant and full of light, so you can do all types of activities outside. Riga is a very special destination which I would recommend to any student looking for a unique experience.

“The ability to adapt to new situations and the self-learning encouraged in Finland have helped me in my job What was your experience on the Erasmus Program like?
My international experience was totally positive. I was able to get a close idea of the Finnish educational system, which was what I wanted. It focuses far more on self-learning and I was forced out of my comfort zone, confronting new situations where everything was not already controlled. I think both of these things are very useful and necessary in any company, and they have helped me in my current job at Indra, where I also have to learn things every day and confront very diverse challenges. I also met a lot of people from different cultures and experienced the Finnish way of life. Lappeeranta is a very quiet town, surrounded by forests and lakes, totally different from what I was used to.
What is your job? What do you most like about it?
Ayla Ruiz SĂĄnchez Digital Technology Consultant
I began working at Indra a year ago, in a unit specialized in digital transformation, Minsait. I am currently business development consultant of FEEP IoT Platform Sofia2, the Internet of Things and Big Data platform of the company, which is used for smart cities, energy efficiency, health projects, etc. What I most like about my job is that I am in contact with a lot of different centers of activity, and we suggest improvements which can have a true impact on businesses. The atmosphere in the office is pretty good, there are lots of young people and everyone helps you when you need something. That makes working much easier.
What surprised you the most when you joined?
What most surprised me about Indra is its complexity, the diversity of sectors it is involved in and the areas it covers, from consulting to engineering, solution development to software production. This offers you a window into very different areas and an extremely broad view of the world of technology.
How would you describe Indra to a young person who was unfamiliar with it? Indra is a major consulting and technology company. It puts you in touch with the latest technologies, which you apply in many different areas and industries, and you can see how they have a genuine impact on society.
What qualities do you think are necessary for working in the company?
I think flexibility is necessary, knowing how to adapt. Being able to work in a team, and being a positive person, who wants to contribute are also important.
Where do you see yourself professionally in the future?
In the future I would like to be in a job where I could travel and also be in contact with the client. If it could be here in Indra, so much the better.

30 YEARS DEDICATED TO THE PROGRESS OF SOCIETY On 29th January 1985, Red Eléctrica de España was born —the first company in the world exclusively engaged in electricity system operation and transport. It started with a team of 93 people and a high-voltage electricity line that was 10,500 km long. Today, 30 years later, the team has grown to 1,700 people and the network stretches to more than 42,000 km. Since its creation, the company has had a clear objective: to guarantee the safe and continuous supply of electricity at all times throughout Spain, and to develop a reliable transport network to support social progress. To offer a safe, efficient and, most of all, sustainable supply of electricity.
Employment Magazine
THE PEOPLE Every day, more than 1,700 people fulfil their commitment to more than 45 million citizens in Spain: to ensure that they are supplied with electricity whenever they need it. This serviceminded spirit is reinforced with collaborative projects and actions that contribute to the sustainable development of the regions in which Red Eléctrica operates through social, cultural, environmental and training initiatives aimed at improving social wellbeing and progress. People management is a vital element in our strategy. People drive the changes that help to overcome challenges and evolve in an uncertain environment. To do this we adapt to the new reality by developing our capacity to change, transform and innovate. In the business strategy of Red Eléctrica (REE), people are essential to fulfil our objectives. Knowledge is the key to maintain competitiveness, and talent management is a strategic priority in our company. Investing in the talent of our professionals enables us to develop new projects and continue growing. We have developed a Global Model of Talent Management aligned with the company strategy. This focused model of interdependent processes homogenises all the training, development and knowledge management systems, and strives for process excellence to maintain the company’s leadership position in Spain and abroad. The model defines what “Talent” is in REE and who manages it; which elements or processes nurture talent, and the learning strategy, including the different company-wide programs, and training methodology to be used in the future.
What is Talent? For REE, Talent is the combination of Knowledge, Skill and Attitude, plus Action. Together, they lead to outstanding performance and the potential to meet the objectives sought by the company.

What elements help to manage Talent? Talent Management comprises a set of processes designed to incorporate new valuable employees into the company, and to develop and retain the human capital already existing within it. Talent Management includes the employment process (recruitment, selection and internal mobility), training (technical and skills), development (programs for professional growth) and performance assessment, as well as other measurement processes enabling realignment by fostering continuous improvement. Knowledge Management and the Leadership Model are the fundamental elements of Talent Management. They facilitate the transmission of key knowledge in the company and promote the involvement of the leader to generate increased commitment, and to develop the people in our organization. In order to ensure the success and development of the Red Eléctrica teams, the Training and Development programs are grouped into four blocks:

They are carried out each year through educational cooperation agreements and are aimed at different groups: •

Designing for the wellbeing of people Steelcase researchers and designers have explored the underlying connections between people’s emotional, cognitive and physical wellbeing. “Offices designed with old business metrics were all about efficiency, and the human being got lost in the process. It led to a lot of work environments that were cold and sterile, and did not help achieve the business goals organizations were aiming for,” notes Cherie Johnson, Global Design Director. “Thinking about space through the lens of wellbeing takes a very holistic and humanistic approach”.

Engaging people’s emotions to boost motivation and engagement Nurture a sense of belonging and foster strong connections between people. Thoughtfully blend spaces for socialization and collaboration with spaces for individual focus and rejuvenation. Provide for moments of respite throughout the day to help people cope with “fight or flight” stressors, which generate cortisol and other hormones that compromise body and mind. Help people see their relationship to the organization, which leads to a sense of purpose in their work.
Priming the brain to think better Support people’s need for focus and rejuvenation so individuals and teams can concentrate easily, solve problems and generate new ideas. Promote social interactions that stimulate the brain and improve creativity. Provide easy ways to offload information so brains don’t become overtaxed. Reduce the threat of “group think” by supporting needs for privacy and solitude so people can absorb information, generate their own point of view and become better collaborators. Allow people to practice mindfulness and build their mental muscles to stay focused and present in the task at hand.
96
Integrate sensors, large-scale computing technology and other devices to help make work easier.
Enhancing vitality Support frequent movement throughout the day for physical and mental vigor. Encourage a range of postures that help people stay comfortable and energized. Promote ergonomic and active sitting so people can move and shift postures to prevent stiffness and pain, especially if movement isn’t inherent in their jobs.
Employment Magazine
The Steelcase Design Studio suggests six strategies that can help achieve the right balance when designing spaces that support the interconnectedness of emotional, cognitive and physical wellbeing:
Democratize space Similar to a healthy ecosystem in nature that is biodiverse, create a range of spaces that support different work modes so people can choose where to work, regardless of where they are in the organization’s hierarchy.
Support multiple postures and movement Incorporate spaces that allow people to work in whatever posture works for them —lounging, standing, perching, walking or sitting upright.
Affirm people’s needs for privacy Balance the desire for openness with the human need for solitude. Create spaces that support focused work as well as rejuvenation.
Embed performance The most inviting and inspiring spaces help people make meaningful progress on their work. Integrate technology that makes it easier for people to collaborate, encourages movement and makes it easier to get into focus. Help people find available places to work and provide a feedback loop to the organization about space utilization.
Promote personalization Create spaces that feel bespoke to the organization and the individual. Prioritize self-expression and authenticity over perfection.
Take cues from nature More than just adding plants —which is important— seek variation over uniformity. Incorporate naturally complex materials and a plurality of shapes, forms, patterns and textures.
