EDITOR’S NOTE This month, we go pink for breast cancer awareness! Pakistan has one of the highest rates of breast cancer in the world, mainly due to a longstanding culture of modesty but it is time that we take it seriously, and ensure that all stigmas around it are broken. Also in relation to health and noting that many countries around the world are entering into another lockdown, we hope that all of you are taking all the necessary precautions against COVID-19. Pakistan’s COVID response has been tremendously successful and we are extremely proud of the way it has been handled. Yet, we want to remind everyone to stay safe and vigilant in these testing times. That being said, we have come up with an issue full of exciting content! Our cover stars this month are Kiran Malik and Mikail Zulfiqar, who share with us what they have been up to and tidbits from their life. For our Inspirational People section, we speak with entrepreneur, Suneera Madhani, an American Pakistani who was recently listed in Fortunes 40 Under 40 list. Our In the Spotlight section features hip blogger and model Sona Rafiq. Read about breast cancer awareness in our People Health feature and travel to stunning Lisbon in People Travel. All this and more waits for you in the following pages and we cannot wait to hear what you love and what you would like changed!

KIRAN MALIK This year has been tough for everyone. What do you think how has COVID changed you life? COVID has helped to put the things that matter in to perspective. It makes me appreciate the mundane things we take for granted. I would say, it’s the small things that make for the big things in our lives. You’re based in Dubai and travel for work while also maintaining a family life. How do you manage it all? Time management is vital when one juggles with family and work. After Pinky Memsaab, what kind of projects you’re more interested in doing? After Pinky Memsaab I have done two other projects, there is a slight delay due to Covid. Primarily, for me the important part is the content regardless of airtime or royalties. Zaraar or Pinky Memsaab, Which one is closer to your heart and why? Both are equally important to my heart. One offered me a good challenge and the other was closer to home. You’re possible the most sought after style icon of our country, so how does it feel? I am humbled by the loving response that I have received. I enjoy personalising what I wear, it comes quite effortlessly to me. Do you take particular interest in your styling or you let the stylists do their job? I had a very dynamic stylist for Zaraar, other than that, I take the lead with my styling. All the stylists in Pakistan are doing a great job. I just feel that if I am to represent a brand, I should have the space to dress it with my take on it. Which red carpet look of yours has been your favourite till now? The time I wore an oversized white suit, which I borrowed from a male friend, for the Lux Style Awards.

PEOPLE PAKISTAN OCTOBER 2020

How much you think social media has a role to play in a celebrity’s success in today’s time? Sadly, nowadays it’s all about the PR people. If your picture does the rounds, it gets the work. But, we can’t just rely on this. We have to make sure the foot fits the shoe. How do you deal with backlash and negative comments on social media? I am confident enough to allow people to like or dislike me. Lets talk about your family. Who is your biggest support and biggest critic at home? None other than my 12 year old daughter, Imaan. How is your relationship with your daughter? Does she plan to follow in your footsteps in the glamour world? She is my best friend, my whole world revolves around her. It’s too early for her to decide at present. But, when she is, I trust her to make an informed decision. What is the one blessing and one curse to be in the entertainment field? I guess if I think about it, it’s fame. It’s nice to be recognised but a huge responsibility too. You entered entertainment industry after marriage, what will be your advice to girls who think marriage is a halt to professional life? Irrespective of marriage, to work is a blessing. Everyone should aspire to be the best version of themselves professionally and spiritually. I believe that if the Pakistani society wants to compete on a World platform, women HAVE to be stakeholders in all professional fields. Where do you see yourself in five years? I would be preparing to send my daughter to University. Seeing her flourish in a new chapter of her life. Then, after this Covid-19 has calmed down to adjust to the ‘new normal’.

MIKAIL ZULFIQAR It’s been long since you last showed up on screen, any specific reason? Not really. Two of my plays ended earlier this year: Ruswai on ARY TV and Ramz-e-Isqh on Geo TV. There has been a slight break for COVID and lockdown but now back in full swing. Are we going to see you onscreen anytime soon? Yes, almost finished two plays. One for Ary and one for Humtv #comingsoon also I have 2 completed films, their release delayed due to COVID. Which role has been your favourite so ? My role in the film Sherdil. Do you feel like there’s a need to stay relevant in

order to get work?

Absolutely! If you dont change with the times, time leaves you behind. What lesson have you learned from your highs and lows? Patience How was lockdown for you? It’s actually been a great chance to spend time with family and relax from the hectic life pre-COVID. Also, I have gotten to practice some rusty skills like playing piano or reading. What is your biggest/weirdest fear? My love with being by myself. If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would that be? Go to the gym! What’s the most memorable lesson you’ve learned from your parents? To work hard and not to give up. INSPIRING PEOPLE

It’s time to meet your new favourite mentor, Suneera Madhani. Trailblazing CEO, podcast host and #girlmom, Suneera starts from the beginning, leading us through her professional and personal journey of founding a hugely successful fintech company and landing on Fortunes 40 under 40 list. A woman with vision, energy and sincerity, Suneera leaves us feeling inspired and ready to conquer each one of our goals.

FROM THE START “I was born in Chicago, Illinois where my family’s initial journey began. My parents immigrated from Karachi,

Pakistan separately as young teenagers, and they ended up meeting through friends and family in ‘little Pakistan’ in Chicago. They got married very young and had me. It’s humbling to see how their fates crossed and how hard they worked. They worked every job to make ends meet, and entrepreneurship, for them wasn’t anything sexy. Now, in 2020, when I talk about entrepreneurship at keynotes and panels, we think entrepreneurship is so sexy and cool. Entrepreneurship for them was a necessity. It was their way to success and freedom. We grew up around our parent’s businesses our whole lives. I realise it now, that was probably my MBA — seeing what it takes to run a business, understanding the ins and outs of it, having employees, and doing peoplepakistan.com

INSPIRING OTHER WOMEN As Suneera grows as a leader, she is building a community of aspiring CEOs and female business leaders alongside her. “It’s something that I live for and feel like this is part of what my purpose is in this world.” The idea of giving back, building community and fostering relationships is core to Suneera’s vision. “I’ve always grown up with a sense of community, and I get my energy from people. My energy, most days, is in my office, it’s my team. We have 120 of the smartest and the brightest, most incredible humans that I get to work alongside with, and I get my energy from them. I also think it’s important to build community in whatever industry that you’re in. Whether you’re an executive, whether you own a business, whether you have a start-up, it doesn’t matter. I want to foster meaningful relationships in my community of Orlando, Florida, within payments, within fintech, and it’s all to learn from each other.

Suneera with her husband, Faiz. The couple recently celebrated their seven-year anniversary. PEOPLE PAKISTAN OCTOBER 2020

19

Suneera actively manages her time as a leading CEO and social media voice with her family life. She describes it as “work life integration” instead of work life balance. Setting a daily example as a strong, female CEO in front of her daughters is a priority and one of many lessons Suneera hopes to impart on her young daughters.

“I want to take all of this and

use it as a platform to help a million other women who never thought that they could, who won’t take the leap on their idea, who don’t have the funding. We’re constantly holding ourselves back, and I feel like it’s my duty to share my story. I feel like it’s my duty to show up every day online to help and inspire and to share this journey.”

“With my girls, I ask them, ‘Who’s the boss?’ and they’ll each raise their hand and say, “I’m the boss.” I think it’s so important to empower young girls from an early age. I grew up with that, and I think a lot of my confidence comes from that. My father recently passed away, and something that he always told my brother and I growing up – and I finally understand now after he passed – was, ‘Sunny, you have it.’ And now I finally see what ‘it’ was, and ‘it’ was confidence. It was that ability to know that I can do ‘it’. And whatever that ‘it’ may look like, that I have what ‘it’ takes. I didn’t realise until later in my life when I looked back. And now that he’s not here and I don’t have that person to tell me every day that I have it, it’s having that confidence now within me. I want to make sure that my girls always have that confidence, that no matter what, I want them to try. It’s okay to fail. That’s also a lesson. I don’t want them to fall into that pattern of not having confidence or us putting them in gender stereotypes. I know that God made me a girl mom for a reason. I’m so proud of my kids and being able to have open conversations [with them] as I did with my parents.” Keep up with Suneera @SuneeraMadhani on Instagram and on Twitter. You can also follow her company @Fattmerchant. Listen to her podcast CEO School on Apple Podcasts and iTunes and follow @ceoschool on Instagram. This interview was conducted by Simran Chawla, author of the book Searching for Home. It has been edited for clarity and length.

Depending on the stage, several treatment options are used. The first option is surgery. Surgery plays an important role in therapy for patients presenting with localised disease. Traditionally, surgeons used to do mastectomy, which is a removal of the entire breast and chest wall tissue. However, now if a woman is diagnosed with an early stage disease, it is very likely that she will not have mastectomy. Instead, a breast conservation is done in these cases, meaning that only a portion of the breast which has the tumor and little bit of normal tissue around is taken out. In Baixa, grab lunch at Prado (pradorestaurante.com) for some modern Portuguese fare in a light, airy space. We definitely recommend the line caught squid but if you don’t fancy seafood, then go for the barrosã rib eye steak. After lunch head straight to the Praça do Comércio,

Lisbon’s main square that faces the harbour on the Tagus River and take a picture with the equestrian statue of King Joseph I. If you are a history buff, then stop by the Lisboa Story Centre (lisboastorycentre.pt) to find

On your second day, we highly recommend that you schedule a tour of Sintra. While all of the castles in this town are

unique, we highly suggest that if you are pressed for time to

visit Palácio da Pena (parquesdesintra.pt), which is truly something out of a fairy tale. From here you can extend your
