This is my FM system I use in school. My teacher wears a microphone so I can hear her better, but I also know sign language. I like to help my Uncle in his car shop. I get to help sweep the floors and work on cars with him.

Tanner Jakes Hibsley High School Freshman Age: 14 GPA: 4.0 About Me: I lost my hearing last year. I have two cochlear implants that work great. I use speech-to-text services in my classes at school. I am taking many upper division classes and hope to graduate at 17. I love my family and live with them in Ohio. My Goals: I have always wanted to work in the medical field! I plan to apply to medical school and be an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) doctor. I would like to open my own practice some day. Possible Obstacles: People don't understand that I am the same person even though I lost my hearing. I will have to work hard to educate people around me about my abilities and learn to advocate for my needs to accommodations and access.

I live with my mom and six brothers and sisters! I am the only deaf person in my family. I love to help with my siblings

Personal Goal: Move out after graduation and live with my friend. Career Goal: I want to find a job and get married. College isn’t for me.

I prefer to do things my own way rather than someone telling me what to do. I use American Sign Language and an interpreter at school but at home I speak and lipread because my family doesn’t sign. I don’t wear hearing aids because I don’t want others to see me differently.

My parents and I are Deaf, my sister is hard of hearing, and my brother is hearing.

I love being Deaf. I do not use hearing aids or any other kind of listening device.

We are all very close so it is hard to live in the dorms over 3 hours away!
