Residential Landscape under $40,000 Winner: Steven Warner, Outhouse Design

A

n awkward sized inner city courtyard split over two levels has been redesigned to create an aesthetically pleasing and useable space. The designer has redesigned the courtyard, with a curved retaining wall which gives more space to the lower dining area as well as creating a separate informal alcove of sandstone steppers surrounded by mondo grass on the higher level. The use of a simple planting and material palette has reinforced the unity between the two levels.

Highly Commended: Hugh Burnett, Good Manors Pools and Gardens.

Highly Commended: Alex Haskey, Green Rooms Gardens and Landscapes.

Highly Commended: George Adams, The Gardenmakers.

Residential Landscape $40,000 to $100,000

Plantscape Design

Winner: Nicola Mai Cameron, Pepo

Winner: Matthew Cantwell, Secret Gardens of Sydney

This Marrickville garden has been transformed from an exposed yard with little more than an expanse of Buffalo grass and a few trees to an inviting garden that combines areas for entertaining and relaxing as well as a productive garden. Elements such as fences, screens and the clothes line have a sculptural quality which adds to the distinctive Australian character of this garden. The clients request for a sheltered sunny area for winter reading has been cleverly designed using plants and a screen while retaining unity and flow throughout the garden through the considered use of scale.

The planting design was driven by the site conditions, working with the areas of natural rock and deeper soil while ensuring that views were maximized at key points throughout the garden. Structural elements complemented and supported this, ensuring privacy from neighbours and comfortable access throughout the garden. The curved terraces responded to the strong curve at the base of the residence and helped slow visual movement down the block.
