FROM THE PRESIDENT In my 18 years as president of Pepperdine University, I have found our students to be a curious lot. Their inquisitive natures and hunger for knowledge lead them to be extraordinary questioners of just about everything. What were the factors that led to the recession of 2008? What might help speed recovery from an ACL tear? What laws might we need to enact to prepare for the era of autonomous vehicles? How can I grow my faith to further serve God? These questions—and the millions of others that have been asked by Pepperdine students over the years—could hardly be more different in their focus and scope. But one constant runs through all of them: the spirit of inquiry that led them to be asked in the first place. That spirit is what draws every Pepperdine student to our campus. They come here to ask questions, to hear new voices and make lasting friendships, to find pathways to the answers they seek—not only in books but in the defining experiences they will add to the many moments that compose their promising lives. That spirit entails no small degree of bravery, for there is far more courage in admitting what one doesn’t know than in charging ahead in ignorance. As educators, we are duty-bound to reward that courage. We may not be able to provide every answer, but we can give our students free rein to ask challenging questions—and freely challenge them to consider ideas and opinions that differ from their own. This is how leaders are made—not by being fed a limited vocabulary of insights, but by adding their voices to the “marketplace of ideas” and succeeding, or failing, on their own merits. Even the failures can inspire personal growth if we do our jobs properly. We would not be able to do so without the loyal support that friends like you have shown us over many, many years. Every gift you so generously have given us promotes the opportunity to nurture the spirit of inquiry in our students and faculty—and, we hope, everyone who sets foot on our campus. We also hope that the light and energy of this gala will serve as reminders of the inquisitive spirit burning within each of us. From here, as we all go forth to seek answers to life’s many different questions, let us do so with purpose, with a servant’s heart, and as one boundless Pepperdine family.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER Doug McMillon President and CEO, Walmart When Doug McMillon took a summer job unloading trucks at a Walmart warehouse in high school, he never could have dreamed that it would be the start of a decades-long career with the retailer. In fact, the idea of a career in retail never even crossed his mind until he was pursuing his MBA at the University of Tulsa. It was there, while planning his post-graduation course of action, that Mr. McMillon expressed interest in one of Walmart’s training programs and was instead offered an immediate position as an assistant store manager. He accepted the job and has been with Walmart ever since. Following his time as an assistant manager, Mr. McMillon moved up to the headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, where a series of promotions then allowed him to serve in successful senior leadership roles in each of the retailer’s business segments. In 2005 Mr. McMillon was named president and CEO of Sam’s Club, an operating segment of Walmart, achieving annual sales of more than $46 billion during his tenure. Next, he became the president and CEO of Walmart International in 2009 before taking on his current role as global CEO in 2014. Since then Mr. McMillon has worked to transform Walmart for the future while maintaining a clear sense of its roots. Ever curious and eager to learn, Mr. McMillon works hard to maintain a broad perspective of what it takes to make a business the best it can be, often visiting Walmart stores and clubs, in addition to meeting with numerous top startup and tech leaders in other industries. Under his guidance, the retailer has developed new and innovative means of bringing together its stores, logistics network, and digital commerce capabilities to make the shopping experience the best it can be for customers. In recognition of his talent, Mr. McMillon has been named as one of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders, one of Forbes’ World’s Most Powerful People in 2014 and 2015, and one of ExecRanks’ top CEOs of large companies in 2015. He also holds the privilege of serving on the board of directors for the Consumer Goods Forum, U.S.–China Business Council, and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Beyond his impressive business achievements, Mr. McMillon is the father of two sons and a proud Pepperdine parent. Those who know him regard him as a man of high standards with a kind, focused demeanor and a strong sense of competitiveness, with his drive to fulfill Walmart’s “save money, live better” mission stemming from a genuine desire to help Walmart’s customers, associates, and culture. In both his professional and personal lives, Mr. McMillon approaches his endeavors with an open mind and a constant desire to learn. His inspiring commitment to seeking truth and promoting education has been paramount to his successes and has given us an exemplary model of the spirit of inquiry that we celebrate tonight.

Meet the newest members of the George Pepperdine Society GOLDEN WAVE SOCIETY
Laure R. Sudreau (JD ’97) As a native of France and a current citizen of the United States, Laure Sudreau has always maintained an international focus in her life and work. Last year she ensured that the Pepperdine School of Law could maintain that focus as well by pledging $8 million to endow the law school’s Sudreau Global Justice Program. A 1997 Pepperdine Law graduate, Laure was the first alumna to endow a chair at the law school in 2011—and fittingly, the first person named to the chair was Professor Janet Kerr (’75, JD ’78), whom Laure names as one of her most significant mentors.
STERLING WAVE SOCIETY
Paula and Ed Biggers We welcome cherished Pepperdine friends Paula and Ed Biggers as new Sterling Wave members of the George Pepperdine Society. This generous couple personifies the Pepperdine motto “Freely ye received, freely give.” Ed, former president of Hughes Aircraft Missile Group and current chair of the Pepperdine Board of Regents, and Paula are residents of Tucson, Arizona. Together, they have invested in Pepperdine student scholarships, the Seaside Residence Hall, and the future Student Recreation and Events Center. They continue to support the Associated Women for Pepperdine as well as the Boone Center for the Family, where they are advisory board members. The Biggers enjoy traveling, dancing, and spending time with their grandchildren.
Lilly Endowment Inc. The Lilly Endowment is dedicated to enriching lives through community development, education, and religion. Strengthening a history of shared success, this past year Pepperdine received substantial support from the Lilly Endowment’s Thriving in Ministry Initiative, a nationwide effort to encourage church leaders as they foster relationships and build bridges into community life. Thanks to recent grants benefiting the COMMUNITAS Pastoral Leadership program and the Sanctuary: Hope and Renewal for Christian Leaders project, Pepperdine is taking an active role in preparing early-career pastors and equipping ministers for the challenges of serving and leading amid the rapidly changing congregational expectations of today.

SILVER WAVE SOCIETY
Soraya and Donald (MBA ’89) Skinner The spirit of entrepreneurship is strong in the Skinner household—less than a decade after earning his Presidents and Key Executives MBA from the Graziadio Business School, Donald Skinner was addressing Graziadio’s graduating class of 1998 as a Distinguished Alumnus. After he founded Eltron International, Inc., serving as its chairman and CEO, Ernst and Young/Merrill Lynch named him 1994 Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year. From their home in Camarillo, Don and his wife, Soraya, have maintained generous support for the Graziadio School, where Don serves as a member of the Graziadio Board.
CRYSTAL WAVE SOCIETY
Brenden Mann Foundation We thank Johnny Brenden, president of the Brenden Mann Foundation and CEO of the Brenden Theatre Corporation, for continuing his family’s longstanding support of Pepperdine. The two live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and have three children: Landon (’08), Chad, and Emily. Danny is a Pepperdine regent, executive, philanthropist, and Texas Longhorn cattle rancher. He has also held many senior financial roles and grew the small company AdvancePCS into a Fortune 500 corporation. In addition, he is on the board of Ministry Ventures and is chairman of the board of Fortress Youth Development Center. Carole serves on the board of trustees of Abilene Christian University. Danny and Carole generously endowed the Phillips Notable Speaker Series as an integral part of the Pepperdine Bible Lectures.

L. “Duck” Dowell. Wally and Betty now live in Pacific Palisades and continue to give generously to support scholarships at the Graziadio School. When not traveling around the world, they enjoy spending time with their daughter Paige and granddaughter Samantha.

Mr. Masuda was born in Tokyo, Japan, graduated from Keio University, and entered a family-owned real estate investment business. In 1988 Mr. Masuda established the Masuda Foundation to promote international understanding through a scholarship program for foreign students. He is a global citizen with homes in Switzerland and Victoria, Canada, but lives much of the year on his yacht. When in Malibu, Mr. Masuda enjoys time with his son Takuji (’93), his daughter-in-law Ami, and their two children.
Geoffrey H. Palmer (JD ’75) Over the last four decades, Geoff Palmer has made an indelible impact on the Southern California real estate industry. Developments such as the Medici and Orsini defied doubters and drove the reemergence of Downtown Los Angeles as a viable residential area. His impact on the Pepperdine School of Law has been equally notable, with the innovative Palmer Center for Entrepreneurship and the Law helping students develop the skills and vision to follow in his highly successful footsteps. An avid polo player, Geoff has competed in matches around the world and passed down his passion to his son Grant.
