From the President
Bravo. Congratulations. Because of you, the Campaign for Pepperdine—which boldly raised its public banner in 2011 as the national economy wallowed in a prolonged recession—eclipsed its $450 million goal ahead of schedule. So tonight, with a bright new year unfolding, we gather to celebrate all that has been accomplished with your steadfast support. You have empowered us to change the life of every student, equipping each with the capacity to embrace society’s vexing challenges and make the world a better place.
Because of you… Pepperdine Waves present and future are blessed with more than 200 new scholarships to pursue their educational dreams. And distinguished professors now occupy endowed faculty chairs, emboldened to elevate their teaching, writing, and research by donors who invested mightily in their work.
Because of you… Our libraries will be transformed with renovated spaces, enriched resources, and high-speed technologies that deliver global knowledge instantaneously to our students. Our visual arts studios have been enhanced for aspiring artists in every genre, and a new student residence hall will soon rise on the Seaver campus. Our future doctors, chemists, and biologists are conducting experiments with state-of-the-science equipment—in laboratories that you have made possible.
Because of you… Our graduate students in law, public policy, business, and education are serving on Los Angeles’ Skid Row and in the darkest reaches of Rwanda and Uganda, helping the needy improve their skills and find hope for better tomorrows. Our young people in the social sciences are engaging in academic discourse in a Great Books Room that would have made Plato and Aristotle swoon. Our athletes dive into a breathtakingly refreshed Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool and train in improved facilities— champions in not just their NCAA Division I sport, but as mentors to underserved children across the region. Truly, the Campaign for Pepperdine—led by the dedicated duo of regents Marylyn Warren and Glen Holden and fueled by hard-working committees of alumni and friends—is a remarkable testament to the loyalty and conviction of many. You and thousands of other donors affirmed that our students—and mission— are worthy of support. Bravo, for elevating Pepperdine’s stature as a preeminent, global, Christian university. We give thanks for a lifechanging campaign, because of you.
ANDREW K. BENTON President
From the Campaign Chairs hen we began the Campaign for Pepperdine, we had one key objective: to tell our story well and in a way that invites all of our alumni and friends to be both involved and invested in our future. Lucky for us, Pepperdine has always had a good story, beginning with the daring tale of an entrepreneur who founded a Christian college in the heart of Los Angeles and now penning a new and defining chapter—the triumphant conclusion of the University’s third and largest-ever fundraising campaign. For the past decade, we’ve shared our story—along with the thousands more of our alumni and students—and we count with pride the more than 49,000 donors who responded with gifts to the campaign. We gratefully acknowledge the 25,000 new alumni, friends, faculty, staff, foundations, and corporations who made their first gift to Pepperdine. Every dollar donated is being put to work for the mission of the University and the students we serve. Our goals have been realized with more than $44 million in annual support to our schools and programs, a generous $140 million in new faculty and academic

initiatives, and an additional $141 million and counting in new scholarship funds and aid to students. Gifts to the campaign have also made possible $114 million in campus improvements, including key international facilities, the beautiful Mullin Town Square, and our future University Events Center. From the Office of the Chair, we are humbled by the extraordinary talent and generosity of all who participated in this quest. We are grateful to have served alongside the chairs of the various campaign committees and for each volunteer who was a fervent ambassador of this unique institution. Your allegiance to this campaign is the reason for its success, and we are blessed to have had your leadership on this journey. In the coming years, students, faculty, and leaders of the University will continue to write its exceptional story, endlessly enriched by the campaigns before it. Thank you for the role you’ve played in shaping Pepperdine’s future— indeed its destiny—as it remains committed, now and forever, to changing lives across the globe.
GLEN A. HOLDEN
U.S. Ambassador (Ret.) Member, Board of Regents

Sharon and Terry Mullin
Sharon and Terry Mullin, our dinner chairs this evening, are extraordinary champions of Pepperdine University. Benefactors of the spectacular Mullin Town Square in the heart of the Malibu campus, the Mullins created a welcoming place for students, faculty, and visitors to gather. A retired lumber business owner, Terry helped usher in a new era in Southern California’s building supply industry. Sharon and Terry recently made a monumental campaign gift to establish the Mullin Endowed Scholarship for Seaver College students who are pursuing degrees in math or science. At the pinnacle of Pepperdine support, Sharon and Terry are welcomed tonight into the Diamond Wave Society.

Indika Energy
Indonesia’s leading integrated energy company—and its third largest coal producer—is led by three Seaver College alumni appropriately nicknamed “The Pep Boys.” Wishnu Wardhana (’93), Arsjad Rasjid (’93), and Agus Lasmono (’93) are providing resources to “run life in their homeland” in ways that bring value to both citizens and stakeholders. Following their graduation from Pepperdine, each returned to Indonesia to pursue careers ranging from finance and digital communications to mining and agriculture. When an energy development opportunity emerged, the former classmates reunited to launch the Indika enterprise. They recently made a significant gift commitment to Pepperdine that will support future students in quest of responsible business careers.

Carla and Fred Sands
Fred Sands and California real estate have been synonymous for decades, a testament to the spectacular success of the company that carried his name for 30 years. Fred is the former chairman of the second largest real estate and financial services company in California. The company and its franchised operations employed 4,000 people, generating $9.4 billion in volume per year. The debt-free company was ultimately sold to Coldwell Banker in 2000 for a nine-figure sum. Today, Fred chairs and is sole owner of Vintage Real Estate, LLC, which acquires and revitalizes regional malls across the United States. Fred also chairs Vintage Fund Management, LLC, which invests in growth companies and is in the top 20 percent of all private equity funds in the country. Fred’s recent endowment will provide for the creation at Pepperdine of the Fred Sands Institute of Real Estate, a dynamic enterprise of the Graziadio School. Fred is also a founder and currently serves as president of the Museum of Contemporary Art. His wife Carla is president of The Blue Ribbon of the Los Angeles Music Center. The couple supports the arts, as well as other philanthropic and political endeavors.

Hari, a Life Regent, received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1988 followed by Padma, who received the distinguished degree in 2013. Together they fervently supported education, funding scholarships, lecture halls, and sports venues at institutions around the world. The Padma and Hari Harilela International Tennis Stadium and the Harilela Seminar Room in the Young Center of the Graduate School of Education and Psychology on Pepperdine’s Malibu campus are a testament to their love of lifelong learning and their belief that sports promote teamwork, good will, and optimum health.

Deanne, a founding member of the Alumni Leadership Council and former University Board member, is involved in leadership and mentoring activities within the family’s church.
Joan and Leonard Starr
Generous friends Joan and Leonard (d. 2013) Starr shared a love of books that led them to make a large gift to the University Libraries. Joan describes visiting Pepperdine many times with her late husband and being impressed by the students and the education they were receiving. Although both Joan and Leonard were New York natives, several of their children moved to California to attend college. Eventually, Joan and Leonard followed them for a warmer climate. A retired pathologist, Leonard served as an army major during the Vietnam War. Joan is a retired psychologist and lives with her son in Agoura Hills, California.
Wendie (’85) and Ziegfred (MS ’83, EdD ’88) Young
Loyal alumni, Wendie and Zig Young survived the Cultural Revolution under China’s Maoist regime. After meeting then-Chancellor Norvel Young in China, Zig and Wendie were able to come to the U.S. and continue their education at Pepperdine, where their entrepreneurial spirit and love of learning were nurtured. Dean Oly Tegner granted Zig a scholarship that enabled him to earn his EdD degree. In a tiny apartment in downtown Los Angeles, Zig founded Orioxi International Corporation which grew into a global athletic apparel manufacturing company. The Youngs’ recent magnanimous gift to Pepperdine will benefit student scholarships at the Graduate School of Education and Psychology, where both are members of the school’s Board of Visitors.

After a successful career in which they built their own company in the oil industry, they are now also proud benefactors of the Respess Fellows program, taking their passion to inspire and encourage aspiring entrepreneurs to the classroom by supporting research pursuits, scholarship, and internship experiences of students in Seaver’s Business Administration Division. We are pleased to welcome the Respesses to the Benefactors Circle this evening and are grateful for their profound impact on the educational experience at Pepperdine.

The Ahmanson Foundation
For more than four decades, The Ahmanson Foundation has expressed confidence in the students of Pepperdine University. Benefactor of the Ahmanson Foundation Collegiate Scholarship and other University scholarship funds, the foundation has also invested in Pepperdine’s three major excellence campaigns. Today the Ahmanson Veteran Scholarship Initiative is providing critical support for the recruitment, education, and retention of our student veterans. Founded in 1952, The Ahmanson Foundation provides grants to Los Angeles County organizations serving the arts and humanities, education, health, medicine, and human services. We are proud to honor foundation president William H. Ahmanson, a member of our Board of Regents, and Karen Ahmanson Hoffman, the foundation’s managing director.
Jo and Robert Barbera
University Board member Robert Barbera has been a faithful Pepperdine friend for over 25 years. Long a champion of Pepperdine’s Florence study-abroad program, he has funded the Barbera Loggia and Firenze scholarships. Robert supports the Barbera International Internships for the School of Public Policy, encouraging internship programs in India. As library campaign committee chair, he made possible Payson Library’s future foyer and the Barbera Information Gateway and facilitated a significant library gift from the Americanism Educational Leaders. Robert and his wife Jo, a Friends of the Family League member, are involved in charitable organizations in their Pasadena community. We appreciate the Barberas and are proud to count them as Pepperdine family.
Rita and Dale (’64) Brown
Dale and Rita Brown are celebrating over 50 years of marriage, having married while attending Pepperdine College. Residents of Midland, Texas, they are members and faithful supporters of the Boone Center for the Family Advisory Board, and Dale actively serves on the Board of Regents. The Browns have made a generous commitment to Pepperdine’s church relations initiative, funding research on spiritual leadership. Dale is president of Moriah Group and Petroleum Strategies and serves on the boards of several companies. Author of the book My First Day in Heaven, Rita leads women’s classes, seminars, and retreats. A special joy is their involvement in the lives of their six children, 26 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Dannette and Paul Chambers
National co-chairs of the Seaver Parents Council executive committee and members of the Seaver Board of Visitors, Dannette and Paul Chambers are fully engaged in campus life. Paul, a 20th Century Fox executive, and Dannette, an active community volunteer, are proud parents of three—Aaron (’13), a Pepperdine graduate with a degree in international business; Katie, a fourth-year art major at Seaver College; and Annie, a Newbury Park High School senior. Generous supporters of the Seaver Dean’s Excellence Fund and avid Waves fans, the Chambers are men’s basketball season ticket holders. We are proud to honor devoted Pepperdine ambassadors Paul and Dannette for their service and commitment to the University.

Palmer Center for Entrepreneurship and the Law is an innovative multidisciplinary 16-unit certificate fellowship program that prepares law students to fulfill the overlapping roles of lawyer and entrepreneur. Carrol and R. Rex Parris
Founders of the R. Rex Parris Law Firm in Lancaster, California, Carrol and Rex are fully engaged in the progress of the School of Law. Daughter Ashley (’01, JD ’05) is a Seaver College alumna and law graduate, and sons Khail (’12) and Rutger are current law students. A highly successful trial attorney and Lancaster’s mayor since 2008, Rex is a respected leader, devoted to building community and improving lives. Carrol, the law firm’s administrator, serves on the Seaver Board of Visitors. The Parrises recently made a pacesetting gift to the School of Law to establish the Parris Institute for Professional Formation, dedicated to helping law students develop career readiness.
Kristen and Timothy (’87) Phillips
A Pepperdine regent and vice chair of the $450 million Campaign for Pepperdine, alumnus Tim Phillips devotes time, talent, and resources to his alma mater. Tim, Kristen, and their two children reside in Portland, Oregon, where Tim is founder and CEO of Phillips and Company, a wealth management leader with more than 3,000 clients nationwide. At Pepperdine, the couple has invested in the Waves of Service initiative, the Jere Yates Chairman’s Suite and a classroom in the Center for Communication and Business, and the Tim and Kristen Phillips Endowed Scholarship Fund. Tim was board chairman of the Children’s Cancer Association and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, among other causes he leads and supports.
Twanna (MBA ’77) and Tim (MBA ’77) Rogers
Co-founders of Tower Energy Group, Twanna and Tim Rogers are dedicated to strengthening community through service and education. Tenacious entrepreneurs, they built their company from a home-based office into a thriving fuel retail and grocery chain along the West Coast in just 20 years. Their latest venture, the Thermal Club in the Coachella Valley, a premier motorsports facility for car enthusiasts with a passion for racing and performance driving, opened in 2013. Loyal Pepperdine alumni, Tim and Twanna established the Rogers Youth Foster Scholarship at Seaver College and graciously augmented the scholarship fund this past year, providing additional support for deserving students. Twanna serves on the University Board.
Tari (’76) and B. Joseph (’76) Rokus
Seaver alumni Joe and Tari Rokus have been Pepperdine family for over 40 years. Their generosity includes major gifts to the School of Public Policy’s Davenport Institute for Public Engagement and Civic Leadership, men’s volleyball, women’s soccer, and—most recently—the Youth Leadership Initiative, a new outreach program committed to raising up the next generation of Christian leaders. Tari serves as chairman and Joe is CEO of Sustainable Packaging Partners, LLC. Joe is also a Pepperdine regent and an elder at the Sierra Madre Church of Christ. The Rokuses are proud parents of five children: Jamie (’06); Katie (’08); Kristen (’11); Stephen, a 2014 Southern Methodist University graduate; and Jennifer, a high school sophomore.
Amy Jo (’00) and Charles Runnels
The Runnels name is synonymous with Pepperdine. Since 1967, when Charlie was recruited to help search for a new campus, he and Amy Jo have been champions for students, supporting scholarships, fine arts and athletic events, and the future University Events Center. As chancellor, Charlie guided the University Board and the Youth Citizenship Seminar, a summer leadership program for top high school students. Parents of three Pepperdine Waves and four alumni grandchildren, the family continues to serve. Amy Jo assisted on the University Libraries campaign committee and Charlie, a Life Regent, counseled the Athletics/University Events Center committee. In 2010 the Charles B. Runnels Sports and Recreation Village was dedicated on the Malibu campus.

Lisa Smith Wengler
Lisa Smith Wengler began her friendship with Pepperdine when she first made her home in Malibu in the 1970s, soon becoming acquainted with former Pepperdine president Norvel Young and Pepperdine matriarch Helen Young (’39). Born and raised in Germany, Lisa found success in California as a developer and builder in Malibu. She recently served on the University Libraries committee of the Campaign for Pepperdine and is a current member of the University Board—proudly supporting student scholarships, the Payson Library renovation, and the Center for the Arts, which was named and dedicated in her honor in 2013. Lisa resides in Malibu with her husband Morten and her dog Ming.
Patricia and Augustus (’74) Tagliaferri
University regent Gus Tagliaferri and his late wife Patty have supported a variety of student-serving programs for more than 35 years. Beginning his undergraduate studies at UCLA, Gus earned his DDS degree from the University of Missouri, and later received an MBA from Pepperdine. A successful businessman, he has worked in real estate development and investments since the early 1970’s. With strong ties to Pepperdine’s Florence program, the Tagliaferri family funded Residenza Tagliaferri honoring Gus’ parents, Edward and Madeline. Endowing scholarships at Seaver College, including the Robert Tagliaferri Scholarship in memory of Gus’ brother, this generous couple is providing a legacy of opportunity for generations of Pepperdine students.
Jennifer (’88) and Eric (’88) Wolford
Cherished Pepperdine alumni Eric and Jennifer Wolford are Moore Haus heroes, recently giving major support to the international campus in Heidelberg, Germany, where they first met as undergrads. In the years following, the couple completed graduate school—Eric at New York University and Jen at Rutgers University—while Eric worked for AT&T and Jen finished a decade of classroom teaching. After moving to Northern California, Eric helped build a series of startup companies, recently retiring as a president of Riverbed Technology and currently working with Accel Partners. Jennifer’s teaching skills have been put to use in local schools, churches, and nonprofits. Together, they have three beautiful children: Marc, Julia, and Lydia.
