PRESIDENT'S REMARKS Andrew K. Benton
FR O M T H E P R ES ID E N T Pepperdine’s campus has always been an idyllic place; for more than 30 years, it has literally been my home. Often it can feel like not just a home but a haven, a refuge from the clamor and conflict of the world outside. None of this is to say that Pepperdine is without disagreement, or that every student, professor, and staff member think with one mind and share the same opinions about everything. Far from it, in fact. By virtually any measure—race, ethnicity, religion, political orientation—Pepperdine is every bit as diverse as our nation as a whole. Yet every day I find myself marveling at the peace and harmony in which these vastly different people, and their ideas, exist, even as they disagree on various issues and plot different paths. “Convicted civility” is, I feel, a perfect summation of the atmosphere we strive to create at Pepperdine. The members of our University community are passionate in their beliefs, and those beliefs certainly collide and conflict. But when that happens, we make an effort to relate to one another, debate in good faith, and continue viewing each other as neighbors rather than enemies. That, in turn, speaks to the larger idea of our campus as an “open table,” where all can bring their own unique gifts and all can be nourished. As a Pepperdine Associate, you have been particularly generous with your gifts, and as such you have helped make our University what it is today: diverse, yet harmonious; passionate, yet peaceful; a place that inspires future leaders, those who will forge solutions to today’s challenges as well as tomorrow’s. Tonight we celebrate your generosity by inviting you back to Pepperdine’s table. A vast spectrum of people will be joining us, but the atmosphere of convicted civility we have created at our table will always, always, be open to you.
ANDREW K. BENTON President and CEO
RO B ERT GAT ES Chancellor of the College of William & Mary United States Secretary of Defense (2006–2011)
In 2006, Dr. Robert Gates received the phone call that would dramatically change his life. “If the president asked you to become secretary of defense, would you accept?” asked Steve Hadley, President George W. Bush’s national security advisor. As Gates explains in his book, fittingly titled Duty, he answered quickly and without hesitation: “We have kids dying in two wars. If the president thinks I can help, I have no choice but to say yes. It’s my duty.” That call of duty was a turning point for Gates, his wife Becky, and their two children. Gates had initially left government with no intentions of returning, and had just extended his presidency at Texas A&M University from five to seven years. However, on December 18, 2006, Dr. Robert Gates was sworn in as the 22nd secretary of defense, and served in this role until July 2011—making him the only secretary of defense in United States history asked to remain in office by a newly elected president. Clearly, Gates has a “profound sense of duty,” as President Barack Obama put it in 2011 when he explained why Gates had chosen to stay on as a cabinet member. Today, he is the chancellor of the College of William & Mary, where he, like Pepperdine’s leadership, celebrates diversity and advocates for convicted civility. Tonight, Dr. Gates will shine a light on his unique life dedicated to our security and the safety of American troops abroad.
A Kansas native, Gates has a bachelor’s degree from the College of William & Mary, a master’s degree in history from Indiana University, and a PhD in Russian and Soviet history from Georgetown. After receiving his master’s in 1966, Gates joined the US Air Force and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1967. It did not take long for the Central Intelligence Agency to recruit Gates, who served the agency for 27 years. In 1991, he was appointed director of the CIA by President George H. W. Bush, and is still the only career officer in CIA’s history to rise from entry level to director. He left to serve as interim dean of the George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M in 1999 before becoming president of the university in 2000. Through years of service, Dr. Gates has served eight presidents from both parties and received several medals of honor, including the National Security Medal, the Presidential Citizens Medal, two National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medals, and three Distinguished Intelligence Medals, one of the highest honors the CIA confers. When Gates finally retired in 2011, President Barack Obama spoke to his character at his Armed Forces Farewell Tribute: “[He] is a man that I’ve come to know and respect—a humble American patriot; a man of common sense and decency; quite simply, one of our nation’s finest public servants.”

S I L V E R WAV E S O C I E T Y DENISE and PAUL BECKSTEAD We are grateful to Denise and Paul Beckstead for more than three decades of support for Pepperdine, and for their extraordinary gift this past year to establish an endowed scholarship at the School of Law. Throughout the years, the Becksteads have been loyal supporters of the Pepperdine Ambassadors Council. An inaugural member of the Crest Advisory Board, Paul remained on the board until 2016, when the couple relocated to Washington State. Paul, a retired dentist, and Denise, a retired lawyer, are proud patrons of the National Parks Foundation, American Lake Veterans Golf Course, and Gig Harbour Fish Community Food Bank, a local organization helping people in vulnerable situations move toward self-sufficiency.
C RY S TA L WAV E S O C I E T Y VIRGINIA and MICHAEL HUSKINS Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Michael and Virginia Huskins relocated to California in 1981 to pursue career opportunities and begin married life together. With a tenacious work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit, Michael built an impressive résumé en route to becoming founder and president of InSearch Management Consultants, Inc. At the center of their family life, Virginia embraced the challenges of creating a happy and healthy home. Together, they are proud parents of three: Stephen and Jonathan, alumni of the University of Arizona, and Monica, a recent Penn State graduate. Establishing an endowed scholarship at Seaver College, the Huskins’ generosity will fuel the dreams of generations of Pepperdine students.
CAROLYN and TED ('59, MBA '75) PORTER Two-time Pepperdine alumnus Ted Porter met and married Carolyn Hahn while attending George Pepperdine College. The proud parents of four are grateful for nine grandchildren and 59 years of a loving marriage. Residents of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, they are both active supporters of philanthropic and political endeavors in the South Bay communities, and Ted serves on Pepperdine’s Athletics Advisory Board. Pepperdine and its athletics department are grateful to Ted, a former Waves football player, and Carolyn for more than five decades of generous support to the football players endowed fund, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, and men’s volleyball, and for establishing a fifth-year scholarship for student-athletes.
CHANCELLOR’S CIRCLE SHERRY and DOUG PAK With no money in his pocket, Doug Pak raised more than $120 million in capital to found Serazen and BLD Brands in 2005. Today those companies operate 143 restaurants and franchises in 15 states, generating $180 million in annual revenue. At Pepperdine, we are grateful for his service on the University Board, as well as the generous support he and his wife Sherry have provided to the Graziadio School’s Microenterprise Program, which helps residents of Los Angeles’ homeless shelters build businesses of their own and forge secure, sustainable careers. Doug and Sherry live in Newport Coast, California, with their two children.
ELEANOR and JIM RANDALL Proud parents of six and grandparents of three, Eleanor and Jim Randall understand the importance of making philanthropy a priority. The Randalls support the arts, education, healthcare, and mental health through a variety of organizations including USC, Mt. San Antonio College, Chapman University, the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, the Rose Bowl, Huntington Memorial Hospital, UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center, and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Since 2007, Eleanor and Jim have given generously to enhance the internship and scholarship programs at Seaver College. Founder of Allfast Fastening Systems, Jim serves on the Seaver Board of Visitors. Eleanor, an accomplished artist, enjoys the challenge of creating large-scale paintings and murals.

Bill Banowsky has a long history with Pepperdine—he is the son of Gay Banowsky and former Pepperdine president Bill Banowsky, Sr. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma and the Dedman School of Law at SMU, Bill began his career in the film industry in 2001, establishing Magnolia Pictures. He was the CEO of Landmark Theatres until 2007, and then became the founder and principal owner of Violet Crown Cinemas. Bill and Susan, an attorney, are involved in film production and commercial real estate, with business locations across the country. They recently gifted Pepperdine with the Susan and William S. Banowsky, Jr., Endowed Scholarship for Seaver College.
JUNMEI CAI and YI CHENG Pepperdine parents Junmei Cai and Yi Cheng share a passion for business, engineering, and education. Chair of Beijing Xiaocheng Technology Stock Co. Ltd. (BXC), a pioneer in smart grid industry, Yi Cheng began his career as a senior engineer at the Beijing Heavy Machinery Factory and rapidly worked his way up the corporate ladder. An accomplished engineer in her own right, Junmei managed the China Shenhua Group for many years before joining her husband at BXC. Their daughter, Mandy ('16), is a student at the Graziadio School. Pepperdine is pleased to recognize the family’s generous support of the Presidents and Key Executives MBA program and the Seaver Dean’s Excellence Fund.
HARRY BRONSON and EDITH R. KNAPP FOUNDATION The Harry Bronson and Edith R. Knapp Foundation’s mission is to support general education, endowing scholarships for students with financial needs, funding capital campaigns, and making grants for K–12, undergraduate, and graduate education throughout the United States. Harry and his mother Edith were devout Catholics, thus their foundation emphasizes Jesuit and Catholic educational institutions. The foundation’s original attorney, Edmond R. Davis, attended Pepperdine in the 1950s and was a member of the School of Law’s Board of Visitors; he encouraged the association with the University. We thank Phillip and Sandra Davis, Ed’s two children and the foundation’s representatives, and his wife Ruby, who continue to support the University through the Pepperdine Fund.
MURRAY LAPPE Inventor and entrepreneur Dr. Murray Lappe began his career as a physician specializing in women’s health, human genetics, and medical informatics. After practicing medicine for eight years, Murray transitioned to business technology and started a software and data processing company. In 1998 he founded eScreen, a drug testing company that revolutionized the industry. Today, with 17 patents to his credit, Murray specializes in medical device development and private investments in healthcare technologies. He is chair and CEO of SteriMed Medical Waste Solutions and Four Futures Investments, and serves as medical director of Emerge Diagnostics and Pulse Health. At Pepperdine, Murray has generously supported the enterprising Fred Sands Institute of Real Estate.
SCOTT McCOLLUM ('84) We thank Pepperdine alumnus and former basketball Wave Scott McCollum for his generous support of Pepperdine and the men’s basketball team. Fluent in multiple languages, Scott continued to play professional basketball for 10 years in Sweden, France, and Switzerland, where he finished his MBA in 1991. Scott has served as president of BillingTree, Inc., and headed up sales and marketing at Access Corporation, where he also sat on the board of directors. He currently serves on the executive board for his charity Future for Kids. Scott is also the proud father of two daughters, Pepperdine freshman Shea and 16-year-old Siena, who hopes to one day be a Wave as well.
JUDITH and GRANT NELSON Grant Nelson joined the Pepperdine law faculty in 2007 after decades on the law faculties at the University of Missouri and UCLA. Having written countless publications and served on multiple committees, Grant is highly respected as a professor and in his role on Pepperdine’s own University Retirement Plan Committee and the University’s Management Committee. Both Grant (as a law school professor) and Judy (as a middle school math teacher) have earned awards for their excellence in teaching, while their daughter Rebekah ('00, MA '03) has earned two degrees from Pepperdine. We thank Grant and Judith for their recent generosity and for their unwavering support for Pepperdine and the School of Law.
ALEXANDER A. PALERMO ('92) Growing up in Italy as a child, Seaver alumnus Alexander Palermo learned to appreciate good food and family meals. In 1992, a few months before graduating, Alex decided to make this passion his career by creating Divine Pasta Company. Alex’s story is a reminder of the amazing things our University can do for our students: What started as a college project with a bag of semolina flour and 15 dozen eggs right here at Pepperdine is now a successful company selling its products in more than 57 countries. Here at Pepperdine, Alex has generously supported the Waves Classic Golf Tournament, another of his great passions.
ROXANNE and GENE PHILLIPS Dallas, Texas, residents Roxanne and Gene Phillips are new Pepperdine friends, generously funding the Roxanne R. Phillips and Gene E. Phillips Endowed Scholarship at Seaver College. Gene is a global venture capitalist and a strategic advisor at both Basic Capital Management, Inc., and Pillar Income Asset Management, and has worked in real estate for more than 40 years. Roxanne is a conservative donor and activist, and a member of the Council for National Policy’s Executive Committee, the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary Board, the SMU Cox Seminar Series for Women, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League. Their son Hayden is a current Seaver College student. We welcome the Phillips family into the Pepperdine community.

Tony, a Pepperdine law school alumnus, is primarily involved with multi-family real estate, as well as the restaurant and apparel businesses. He is also president of the Friends of Israel Defense Forces Western Region and vice president of the Windward School Board of Trustees. Linda is a board member of the Geffen Playhouse, founding member of the Everychild Foundation, and chair of the board of Violence Intervention Program. They have funded the Dean’s Excellence Fund and have established the Ruud Natural Science Division Endowment. Chris, a Pepperdine University Board member, was formerly president of Ruud Lighting and vice president of CREE. He is currently CEO of DeltaHawk Engines, designing innovative aviation engines and products. Chantil is an avid Ironman participant, and qualified for the world finals in Hawaii. Chris’ hobby is car racing, winning the 2011 and 2014 season championships in the Ferrari Challenge series. Together they share their love of sporting activities with their three children, Jacob, Zachary, and Caitlyn.
STEPHEN L. SAX Most people know Steve Sax as the second baseman who won two World Series rings with the Dodgers, and who was a constant threat on base, stealing 444 bases over a 14-year career. Now that his stealing days are over, he’s giving back instead. When Pepperdine alumnus Michael J. Bidart (JD '74) secured a court settlement for Sax last year, the two teamed up to create the Stephen L. Sax Legacies for Justice Endowed Scholarship. They hope to inspire the clients of other School of Law alumni to devote portions of their settlements to the scholarship fund as well.
DEE ANNA SMITH ('86) Alumnus and Pepperdine regent Dee Anna Smith is the CEO of Sarah Cannon, the Hospital Corporation of America’s global cancer institute and its research arm. Devoted to strengthening community and empowering lives, Dee Anna serves on the Nashville Health Care Council Board of Directors and the Lipscomb University School of Pharmacy Board of Visitors, and is a member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Ethos Church. She and her husband Hubie have three children: Adam, Rachel (a recent Seaver graduate), and Becca (a current student). Supporting women in the sciences, Dee Anna’s generous gift to Seaver College is transforming research and career-preparation programs for a pioneering group of Pepperdine scholars.
S U S TA I N I N G C I R C L E THE AHMANSON FOUNDATION For almost five decades, The Ahmanson Foundation has invested generously in Pepperdine’s future through projects such as the Payson Library renovation scheduled to be completed this fall. The foundation has further supported numerous scholarship programs including The Ahmanson Foundation Collegiate Scholarship and the Ahmanson Veteran Scholarship Initiative, supporting the recruitment, education, and retention of student veterans. Outside of Pepperdine, the foundation influences Los Angeles through its funding projects related to arts and culture, education, healthcare, and poverty. We are grateful to the foundation’s managing director, Karen Ahmanson Hoffman, and its president, Pepperdine Board of Regents member William H. Ahmanson, for their enduring commitment to the University.
PAULA and EDWIN BIGGERS We thank Pepperdine parents (and grandparents) Paula and Ed Biggers for decades of support for the University. Having served a three-decade career with Hughes Aircraft, including years as president of its Missile Group and a consultant to the Department of Defense, Ed, a US Naval Academy alumnus, brings lifetime leadership skills to his role as chair of Pepperdine’s Board of Regents. Together, Paula and Ed have invested generously in scholarships, individual schools, and the future University Events Center. Both Paula and Ed serve on the advisory board of the Boone Center for the Family and continue to give significant time and resources to this important cause.
BRENDEN MANN FOUNDATION/JOHNNY BRENDEN Johnny Brenden, president of the Brenden Mann Foundation and CEO of the Brenden Theatre Corporation, continues his family’s tradition of partnership with Pepperdine University. Ted Mann, Johnny’s grandfather, an entrepreneur and movie theatre magnate, was a member of Pepperdine’s Founding 400, and received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Seaver College in 1989. His sister, Blythe Brenden ('90), is a Seaver College alumna. The Brenden Mann Foundation, established by Ted Mann and continued by Johnny Brenden, has generously supported the Institute for Entertainment, Media, and Culture, the Brenden Mann Israel Internship Program at the Glazer Institute for Jewish Studies, and the Brenden Mann Scholars Program.
NOELLE and JAMES BURKEY Pepperdine is pleased to honor the Burkey family and the Wood-Claeyssens Foundation as cherished members of the University community, and for their generous support for Pepperdine programs and events. The foundation, founded by Noelle Burkey’s late father, Pierre Claeyssens, has supported the Nonprofit Leadership Collaborative, the Pierre P. Claeyssens Endowed Scholarship, the Waves Classic Golf Tournament, and a variety of faculty research projects. Noelle and her daughter Jenna ('08, MBA '10, MA '13) are both members of the Seaver College Board of Visitors. We thank the Burkey family and the Wood-Claeyssens Foundation for their enthusiastic support and trust in our efforts.
HUGH and HAZEL DARLING FOUNDATION/RICHARD L. STACK The Hugh and Hazel Darling Foundation, represented by trustee Richard L. Stack, supports education in California, emphasizing legal and Christian higher education. Hazel Darling created a trust in memory of her husband, Los Angeles attorney Hugh W. Darling, which became a foundation upon her death. Seaver College and the Pepperdine School of Law have been grateful recipients of their generosity since 1988. The Darling Foundation has funded the Darling Chair in Law and the Darling Trial Courtroom, and continues to support scholarships, facilities, and the Pepperdine Legal Aid Clinic at the Union Rescue Mission. The foundation recently pledged a significant gift toward the School of Law renovation project.
JOHN STAUFFER CHARITABLE TRUST The John Stauffer Charitable Trust, a private foundation based in Pasadena, California, was established in 1974 under the will of the late John Stauffer, a principal officer and shareholder of the former Stauffer Chemical Co., founded in San Francisco in the 1880s. Following the wishes of John Stauffer, the trust primarily supports California hospitals, universities, and colleges. In recent years, the trustees—John F. Bradley, Timothy J. Gosney, and Michael R. Whalen, a Pepperdine parent—have emphasized grants to fund undergraduate student research in chemistry and biochemistry at numerous colleges and universities around the state, including Pepperdine.
BLANCHE and PETER JAMES JOHNSON, JR. Ever since their daughters Blanche ('15) and Veronica started classes at Pepperdine, the Johnsons have been devoted and generous supporters of the University. They created the Peter and Veronica Johnson Endowed Scholarship, sponsored the Pepperdine Associates dinner annually, and served as chairs of the dinner committee last year; Peter also serves on the Board of Regents. He is president of Leahey & Johnson, PC, a New York law firm that handles everything from commercial litigation and product-liability law to constitutional issues. Pepperdine is honored to have their accomplished, committed family as part of ours.
JEAN TONG and SHAO XI LIU If you’ve recently visited Pepperdine’s campuses in Heidelberg, London, Shanghai, or Florence, chances are you’ve walked on flooring or relaxed on furniture provided by Shao Xi Liu and Jean Tong. Shao Xi is founder and head of Yihua Timber Industries and several other corporations, and Jean is president of furniture distributor New Classic Home Furnishings, Inc.; together they have given generous quantities of custom flooring, handmade furniture, and financial support for Pepperdine’s international campuses. We are honored to include them in our Pepperdine family, as well as their two sons, Vincent and Ryan, both 2010 Seaver College alumni.
JANICE and ROBERT ('64) PEARSON After earning a bachelor’s degree from George Pepperdine College and a master’s degree from UCLA, Bob Pearson devoted his professional life to education. His three-decadelong teaching career began in California and culminated in Alsea, Oregon, where he taught elementary and middle school for 23 years. Residents of Waldport, Oregon, Bob and his wife Janice have six grown children, 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The Pearsons are yoga enthusiasts who also share a love for the great outdoors and treasure time spent with their ever-expanding family. Having established an endowed scholarship at Seaver College in 2005, Bob and Janice graciously augmented their scholarship fund this past year to ensure additional support for deserving Pepperdine students.

Their son, James, is a 2012 MBA graduate of the Graziadio School of Business and Management. We are grateful for the enduring support of this generous family.
TWANNA (MBA '77) and TIM (MBA '77) ROGERS Pepperdine is pleased to recognize Graziadio alumni Twanna and Tim Rogers for continuing to enrich the lives of Seaver students through the Rogers Youth Scholarship Fund. Co-founders of Tower Energy Group, a wholesale fuel provider and retail grocery distributor, and The Thermal Club, a premier motorsports facility, Twanna serves as CFO of both companies and Tim serves as president. Active in the life of the Pepperdine community, Twanna is a dedicated member of the University Board. Providing additional support to their endowed scholarship this past year, the Rogerses are creating enduring avenues for success for undergraduates who face significant financial challenges while striving to reach educational and professional goals.
CARLA SANDS By founding the Vintage Capital Group investment firm, Carla and the late Fred Sands made an indelible impact on southern California. Through their generosity, they have made their mark on Pepperdine as well. Together, they funded the Fred Sands Institute of Real Estate at the Graziadio School of Business and Management; Carla has carried on that legacy by giving generously to the School of Public Policy and becoming a member of the University Board. Her long list of community activities includes service on the boards of the Los Angeles Police Foundation; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the UCLA School of Arts and Architecture, along with involvement in many other worthy local causes.

TRIBUTES
We are pleased to honor Pepperdine for its commitment to civic engagement and civility. Don and Susan Rice
Helping to
Inspire Tomorrow, Today
Our father, George L. Graziadio, Jr., strongly believed in the free enterprise system which has been so integral to our country’s economic success and which created an environment where entrepreneurship can flourish. He worked hard all his life and enjoyed financial success and then, as a testament to his beliefs in the free enterprise system and entrepreneurialism, endowed the Graziadio School of Business & Management at Pepperdine University.

Our father envisioned the Graziadio School of Business & Management becoming one of the country’s premier educational institutions for future entrepreneurs. He wanted to ensure that our young people were given the opportunity to learn about our country’s great economic system of free enterprise and the vast opportunities it could provide. We are proud to have the opportunity to continue the legacy at Pepperdine that our parents began many years ago. We welcome Deryck van Rensburg as the new Dean of the Graziadio School of Business & Management and look forward to the many new and exciting things to come. We also salute all the dedicated members of the Pepperdine community who work tirelessly to create an environment that provides students with the best learning programs possible.
