dysseus’ return from Troy. The adventures of Sir Lancelot. The original Star Wars. These are the types of stories we associate with the “hero’s journey”—protagonists facing dangerous, even supernatural, challenges to become legend. But the hero’s journey would never have become such a universal cultural motif if it hadn’t been relatable. Indeed, Joseph Campbell, who formulated the original theory of the heroic journey in his 1949 book The Hero with a Thousand Faces, describes the concept in terms many of us might recognize from the journeys in our own lives. According to Campbell, the hero’s journey includes a “call to adventure,” in which he is invited into a strange and unfamiliar world. He endures harsh conditions and fearful challenges, a “road of trials,” on his way to achieving the great gift, or “boon”—one that often includes valuable new insight into himself. Then he must “return to the ordinary world,” and if his return is successful, he might share his gift—“the application of the boon”—to improve the world around him.

Many of our students come to Pepperdine out of a sense of calling. And while I hope nothing on our campus ever seems as awful as a gorgon or the Death Star, the journey toward earning a degree can be difficult. But when they achieve that goal, they attain life-changing insight, into both the outside world and their inner selves. And, hopefully, they use those gifts to live with purpose and make a positive difference. Neither the fantastic journey nor the fruits at its end would be possible without you, our loyal community of Associates, alumni, and friends. You have taken journeys of your own, some beginning right here at Pepperdine, and by sharing the fruits of your endeavors with our students, faculty, and staff, you have set the stage for many victorious quests to come. Tonight we share our boon with you. Thank you for joining us on Pepperdine’s journey.

Lester Holt

here are few corners of the world Lester Holt has not yet touched in his 35-year career in journalism and—since joining the NBC News family in 2000—few major stories he has not covered. He anchored MSNBC’s daytime coverage of the 2000 presidential election, as well as the channel’s coverage of the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. He was on the Gulf Coast for Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and returned five years later to cover the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. He went to Haiti in 2010 to report on the country’s devastating earthquake, to the streets of Cairo in 2011 covering the “Arab Spring” revolution, and to Japan that same year for a firsthand look at the aftermath of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Naturally, Lester has returned from these travels with plenty of stories to tell. He will share some of them tonight, unfolding how they add up to a larger, longer journey: his rise from country-music DJ to anchor of the most watched network evening newscast in the United States. Born in Marin County, California, Lester attended high school and college in the Sacramento area. At Cordova High, he was the “Voice of the Lancers,” ending each of his morning PA announcements with, “You are up to date.” While still in high school, Lester got a part-time job at KRAK, a country radio station. “The only time I could land a full-time gig was if I was willing to report the news,” he remembers. Lester’s journalism career began in 1981, starting a calling that would take him to the nation’s largest media markets in

New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. While anchoring the evening news for the CBS affiliate in Chicago, he won a 1990 Robert F. Kennedy Award for Excellence in Journalism for his contribution to a 48 Hours investigation into public housing. By 2003 Lester had been named coanchor of Weekend Today on NBC while also appearing regularly on the network as fill-in anchor on Today. He became NBC Nightly News weekend anchor in 2007 and in February 2015 was tapped as interim anchor on the program; four months later, the network made Lester the permanent weekday anchor of its flagship evening newscast. Lester’s career hasn’t been exclusively hard news. He reported for NBC Sports on the Olympic Games in Athens, Torino, Beijing, Vancouver, and London and has hosted documentaries on the History Channel and SyFy. He has even had cameos in the films The Fugitive and Primal Fear and on the sitcom 30 Rock. Lester’s most important roles, however, are husband to Carol Hagen-Holt and father to two sons, Stefan and Cameron. For elder son Stefan, a 2009 Pepperdine graduate, Lester is also a career role model and, soon, a coworker. This month Stefan begins anchoring the afternoon news for NBC’s New York affiliate, airing from the same 30 Rockefeller Plaza headquarters where Lester is the face of NBC Nightly News. “So proud of you, kid,” Lester tweeted when the news was announced. “First lunch in 30 Rock commissary is on me.”

Brenden Mann Foundation

Rita and Dale (’64) Brown

Alumna Kathy Danhakl and her husband, John, have given generously through the Danhakl Family Foundation to support and establish a variety of GSEP programs, including an endowed scholarship, the Lifelong Learning Endowed Fund, and the Distinguished Visiting Professor in Global Leadership and Change. Trustee of her family’s foundation, Kathy was honored with the Graduate School’s Excellence in Leadership Award last November. John is a managing partner at Leonard Green & Partners, a private equity firm in Los Angeles. Residents of Pacific Palisades, Kathy and John are committed to supporting educational programs that enrich lives and strengthen community. Pepperdine is grateful to the Danhakls for their continued generosity and confidence in our students.

We salute Johnny Brenden, president of the Brenden Mann Foundation and CEO of the Brenden Theatre Corporation, as he continues a family tradition of partnership with Pepperdine University. Johnny’s grandfather, Ted Mann, an entrepreneur and movie theatre magnate, was a member of Pepperdine’s Founding 400, and received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Seaver College in 1989. His sister, Blythe Brenden (’90), is a Seaver College alumna. The Brenden Mann Foundation, established by Ted Mann and continued by his children and grandchildren, has generously supported Pepperdine’s Institute for Entertainment, Media, and Culture, as well as the Brenden Mann Israel Internship program at the Glazer Institute for Jewish Studies.

Dale and Rita Brown, celebrating more than 50 years of marriage, met at Pepperdine College. Residents of Midland, Texas, they are advisory board members and faithful supporters of the Boone Center for the Family, and Dale actively serves on the Board of Regents. The Browns have made a generous commitment to Pepperdine’s church relations initiative, funding research on spiritual leadership. Dale is president of Moriah Group and Petroleum Strategies, and serves on the boards of several companies. Author of the book My First Day in Heaven, Rita teaches women’s classes, seminars, and retreats. A special joy is their involvement in the lives of their six children, twenty-six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

CHANCELLOR’S CIRCLE

Janet E. Kerr (’75, JD ’78)

Kymberly and George Rapier

Helen and Warren Talbot

During a 30-year teaching career at the Pepperdine School of Law, Professor Emeritus Janet Kerr was named both a Luckman Distinguished Teaching Fellow and Sudreau-Rippe Endowed Chair, was founding director of the Palmer Center for Entrepreneurship and the Law, and served as associate dean. Janet is also a nationally recognized author, lecturer, and consultant and serves on the boards of numerous public and private corporations such as La-Z-Boy, AppFolio, Fidelity National Financial, and Tilly’s. We applaud her for giving generously, and with her new appointment as vice chancellor, we look forward to her continued inspiration and leadership benefiting our worldwide Pepperdine family.

Three years ago, the town of Oakridge, Oregon (population 3,207), welcomed two new residents. What the town didn’t know was that the newcomers were George Rapier, founder, chairman, and CEO of WellMed Medical Management, and his wife, Kym, who were in town to shoot an episode of ABC’s Secret Millionaire. By the end of their stay in Oakridge, the Rapiers had given more than $1.3 million to civic organizations and individual residents. The show, however, represents just one of many philanthropic efforts the Rapiers have supported, including juvenile diabetes research, the Morgan’s Wonderland specialneeds amusement park in San Antonio, and now student scholarships at Pepperdine.

Through a generous estate gift, the late Warren and Helen Talbot have ensured a lasting legacy at Pepperdine. Warren, a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, was an engineer by profession; Helen, a devoted wife and mother, served in various management and sales positions throughout her life. Longtime Southern California residents, their initial involvement with the University began in 2000 when they established a charitable remainder unitrust. Attracted to Pepperdine’s Christian mission and commitment to academic excellence, the Talbots joined our distinguished roster of benefactors. We are proud to honor their memory this evening by elevating their status in the George Pepperdine Society to Chancellor’s Circle members.

Salma F. Dajani and Ali H. Alireza (MBA ’86)

Linda and Don (MBA ’86) Bailey

Banc of California

Distinguished Graziadio alumnus Ali Alireza is the managing director of Haji Husein Alireza & Company Ltd. (HHA) in Saudi Arabia, the exclusive nationwide importer and distributor for a variety of motor vehicle companies. In addition to his leadership role at HHA, he serves as board chair for Gulf One Investment Bank B.S.C., as well as chair of National Computer Systems Company. Supporting a wide range of charitable causes, Ali is a member of the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund Board and the Graziadio Board of Visitors. Pepperdine is pleased to acknowledge Ali and Salma for giving generously to strategic student-serving initiatives at the Graziadio School through the Dean’s Excellence Fund.

Graziadio School students and faculty know Don as a Senior Fellow in Entrepreneurship and generous benefactor to the Graziadio Fund and Entrepreneur in Residence program. He was also the school’s 2015 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient, a distinction he earned after successful stints as CEO of Questcor Pharmaceuticals and Comarco Inc., as well as service on numerous corporate boards. Both Pepperdine and charitable giving are traditions in the Bailey family; Don and Linda’s daughter Kirsten earned her MBA at the Graziadio School in 2003, and their three children, along with seven grandchildren, help manage the family’s A Little Help Foundation, which supports health, education, and after-school initiatives for children and teens throughout Southern California.

Banc of California’s mission is dedicated to empowering California’s diverse private businesses, entrepreneurs, and communities. Founded in 2010 by a small group of Southern California’s leading business owners and investors, it’s a bank committed to investing in California, lending more than one dollar for each dollar of deposits. It’s no wonder, then, that this bank, with the support of chairman, president, and CEO Steven A. Sugarman, has partnered with the University to support the Pepperdine Microenterprise Program—a powerful initiative that helps underprivileged members of the Los Angeles community find gainful employment and launch micro-businesses. Pepperdine applauds Banc of California for its generous commitment to social entrepreneurship and community development.

Roma Downey and Mark Burnett

Julie and James Cardwell

Amy (’98) and Chris (’98, MDiv ’02) Doran

You probably know Roma as the star of CBS’ Touched By An Angel and Mark as the Emmy-winning producer of such hit shows as Survivor, The Apprentice, and The Voice. Mark was also named one of the world’s most influential people by Time magazine, and Roma is a successful producer, author, and philanthropist. Together they graced Pepperdine with their presence as emcees for the Campaign for Pepperdine launch dinner in 2011, and they’ve been loyal ambassadors of the University, giving generously to support the Institute for Entertainment, Media, and Culture; the Saint John’s Bible project; and the School of Law. The University is proud to count such accomplished, caring people among its friends.

Jim and Julie Cardwell joined the Pepperdine family through their son, Trey, a junior at Seaver majoring in media and film production. Their generous support of the Seaver College Communication Division continues their long history of involvement in education. The couple resides in El Paso, Texas, where Jim serves on the Board of Trustees at Lubbock Christian University and various committees at the University of Texas at El Paso and is an elder at Westside Church of Christ. He is also the president of C&R Distributing, a fuel/oil distribution company serving Texas and New Mexico. The University is grateful for the Cardwells’ investment in not only their son’s future, but the futures of many students to come.

Seaver College alumni Chris and Amy Doran first arrived as undergraduates on campus in 1994 and have remained involved with their alma mater ever since. Chris also earned his master’s degree at Seaver and is today an associate professor in Seaver’s Religion and Philosophy Division. Amy is an auditor, volunteers for the Malibu Labor Exchange, and is an adviser to Pepperdine’s Delta Gamma chapter. Together they are active members of the University Church of Christ; founders of the Faith & Education Scholarship Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization distributing scholarships to Church of Christ students attending liberal arts schools; and fervent environmental policy advocates whose gifts support an annual speaker series on sustainability and creation care.

Friends of Golf

New Benefactors Circle members Greg and Barbara Ellena are leading by example at Pepperdine. As proud parents of 2013 Seaver College alumna and School of Law student Katherine, they give generously of their resources, supporting the Pepperdine Microenterprise Program and School of Law, and their leadership talents, including Greg’s service as an advisory director for the Microenterprise Program and a member of the University Board. The couple resides in Scottsdale, Arizona, where Barbara is an interior designer and Greg is an independent trustee of the First Western Funds Trust investment management company. The Ellenas are also developing a new residential community near Scottsdale’s historic Old Town district.

If you’ve watched the puck drop at Maverik Center for a Utah Grizzlies match, or done the seventh-inning stretch at an Inland Empire 66ers game, thank University Board member David Elmore and his wife, Donna. This couple, who generously supports the International Program Fund at Seaver, runs Elmore Sports Group, the owner and manager of six minor-league baseball and hockey teams across the western United States. David also served on the Department of Commerce’s Travel and Tourism Board and chaired the U.S.-China Trade Council in the 1980s; Donna served as deputy commerce secretary in the Reagan Administration and chaired the California Chamber of Commerce. Their son Douglas and granddaughter Callie are both Pepperdine graduates.

Striving to make the game of golf more inclusive and accessible to young people, Friends of Golf (FOG) is dedicated to providing monetary assistance to youth golf organizations at all levels. Founded in 1979 by a group of 25 golf enthusiasts, FOG takes a leadership role in honoring the achievements of studentathletes and promoting good citizenship. A mutual respect and love for golf brought FOG and Pepperdine athletics together in 1987, and the friendship has grown with each passing year. Thankful beneficiaries of FOG’s abiding generosity, the men’s and women’s Waves golf teams continue to learn valuable life lessons through their sport while enjoying the thrill of competition.

Fuller Theological Seminary Thrive Center

Holly and Thomas Gores

Kimber L. Maderazzo (MBA ’10)

Established in 2011, Fuller Theological Seminary’s Thrive Center for Human Development embraces a dual mission to study human thriving and translate that research into tangible resources. Providing a generous grant this past year to support the continuing work of Dr. Elizabeth Krumrei-Mancuso, associate professor of psychology at Seaver College, the Thrive Center has demonstrated its commitment to empowering meaningful cutting-edge research. Exploring the development and validation of the Comprehensive Intellectual Humility Scale, Dr. Krumrei-Mancuso has made significant strides in her field of study. Pepperdine is grateful to the Thrive Center for serving as a positive influence on the lives of many and encouraging the important work of dedicated faculty scholars.

For some people, ownership of a major sports franchise is just a business investment. But Tom Gores, chairman and CEO of Platinum Equity and owner of the Detroit Pistons basketball team, is a true sports fan. Not only was he a three-sport athlete at Genesee High School in Michigan, he currently coaches youth soccer and basketball. Tom, Holly, and their children live in Beverly Hills, where they give generously to a variety of causes from Pepperdine athletics to health care and the arts. Tom has also pledged to raise $10 million for his hometown of Flint, Michigan, and the residents affected by the city’s ongoing water-contamination crisis.

Even before she attended the Graziadio School of Business and Management, Kimber was building an executive résumé that reads like a Who’s Who of the consumer products beauty industry—Avon, Estée Lauder, L’Oreal, Johnson & Johnson, and Procter & Gamble, to name just a few. Currently she is senior vice president of global brand and product marketing for Guthy Renker Inc., a privately owned direct-marketing company with more than $1.4 billion in annual revenues. Yet she still finds time to share her leadership and business acumen with the Graziadio School, serving as a marketing professor and member of the school’s Board of Visitors while supporting a new fund for career development in marketing.

Brian M. Thomason

Latvia native Alfred Raisters first arrived in the United States as a refugee from communism after World War II. His love for his Latvian nationality and culture never waned, and he later became the honorary consul of his home country for nearly 20 years. A lifelong lover of sports, Alfred also served as a delegate of the Latvian Olympic Committee for the 1994 and 1996 games. He was an avid lifelong learner, augmenting a lengthy and distinguished engineering career with a Pepperdine MBA and volunteering with programs encouraging children’s interest in science. Alfred passed away in 2012 at age 91, and Pepperdine is honored to be part of his proud legacy.

Malibu residents Cheryl and Jeff Stibel are new Pepperdine friends, generously supporting the Dun & Bradstreet Business Research Program and the Private Capital Markets Project at the Graziadio School. As vice chair of D&B, Jeff enabled the company to provide internships and research opportunities for Pepperdine graduate business students and faculty. A noted entrepreneur, brain scientist, and author, Jeff serves on various corporate and academic boards and in 2015 received an honorary Doctor of Business degree from the Graziadio School. Cheryl, with a graduate degree in psychology from the University of Rhode Island, now focuses on their two children, volunteering at their school and as a Girl Scout leader.

Brian Thomason may not be a Pepperdine graduate himself, but his devotion to the University is unquestioned. He recently established the Financial Literacy Endowed Fund as well as the Phillip B. Thomason Hispanic Endowed Fund, named for his father, a beloved professor of Hispanic studies at Seaver. Now serving as university controller and associate vice president, Brian is also an adjunct accounting and finance professor at Seaver College and has taught at the Graziadio School. Outside Pepperdine, he has served on numerous nonprofit boards, including Global Samaritan Resources, which distributes medical relief supplies and equipment to underserved populations worldwide. Lisa Smith Wengler began her friendship with Pepperdine when she first made her home in Malibu in the 1970s, soon becoming acquainted with former Pepperdine president Norvel Young and Pepperdine matriarch Helen Young (’39). Born and raised in Germany, Lisa found success in California as a developer and builder in Malibu. She served on the University Libraries committee of the Campaign for Pepperdine and is a current member of the University Board—proudly supporting student scholarships and the Center for the Arts, which was named and dedicated in her honor in 2013. Lisa resides in Malibu with her husband, Morten, and her dog, Ming.
