EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS GUIDE
The Emergency Preparedness Guide is designed to assist you in responding to emergencies that may impact you while attending classes, working, or residing at one of the University’s campuses in Southern California. You are encouraged to read the document and refer to it as needed. The guide is available by logging into WaveNet at wavenet.pepperdine.edu, and provides further detail about the topics covered in this brochure.
EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS
REPORTING AN EMERGENCY
At all domestic University campuses, call 911. Then call the Department of Public Safety at 310.506.4441.
UNIVERSITY EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONS
Everbridge is the University’s emergency mass notification system, which allows Pepperdine to send text messages, emails, and voice messages to faculty, staff, and student cell, office, and home phones. The system is used only during emergencies and for testing, and is dependent on the personal contact information provided by each individual in the WaveNet portal.
EMERGENCY INFORMATION PAGE
The University’s Emergency Information Page, emergency.pepperdine.edu, functions as a blog during emergencies, with the latest updates and decisions posted by the University’s Emergency Operations Committee. These updates could include class cancellations, campus closures, and any instructions to the University community.

During an emergency, the hotline number is updated with the latest information and decisions of the University’s Emergency Operations Committee.
INTERNATIONAL
SOS (ISOS)
Pepperdine partners with ISOS, an emergency medical and security services provider, to deliver assistance services to University students, faculty, and staff traveling abroad. Travelers are required to register their travel with ISOS’s travel tracker, which assists the University in responding to emergencies overseas.

EMERGENCY RESOURCES for AN
INTRODUCTION
Pepperdine has many resources available regarding emergency preparedness and wants to educate faculty, staff, and students on how to prepare for and respond to emergencies. This brochure provides a high-level overview of several specific situations and points to additional resources for further details.
PERSONAL PREPAREDNESS
Create a personal disaster plan. Such a plan allows an individual or group to react quickly, calmly, and with an understanding of each member’s responsibilities in a potentially chaotic situation.

Be prepared in all situations
Road Closures
Due to the limited number of routes in and out of Malibu, road closures have an impact on traffic in the area.
Familiarize yourself with the five major routes to the Malibu Campus listed below:
Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon accessible from the 101 freeway
Kanan Road accessible from the 101 freeway
Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north of the Malibu Campus
PCH south of the Malibu Campus
Topanga Canyon to PCH south of the Malibu Campus

EARTHQUAKE
Southern California residents should understand the best practices for surviving an earthquake. If indoors, stay there. Get under a desk or table, or stand in a corner or doorway that does not have doors on it (do not go in a doorway with doors; they can swing back and forth violently). Protect your head, neck, and face. If outdoors, get into an open area away from trees, buildings, walls, and power lines.

WILDFIRE
Wildfires or brush fires are uncontrolled, non-structure fires that occur in the wilderness, wildland, or brush. Common causes of wildfires are lightning, improperly discarded cigarettes, and arson. Due to dry conditions, Southern California is particularly vulnerable to wildfires.

Created by the Center for Personal Protection and Safety and available in WaveNet at wavenet.pepperdine.edu, the Shots Fired video provides best practices and tips on how to survive an active shooter situation, and the Safe Passage video provides helpful information for best practices and tips on how to prepare for a trip abroad and safe travel.
SHELTER-IN-PLACE
The University shelters in place during wildfires affecting its Malibu campus because there are limited routes to and from the campus. These roads may be closed, congested, and/or dangerous, as wildfires can spread quickly and change unpredictably. Pepperdine has prepared multiple staging locations with emergency supplies on the Malibu campus so the University community can relocate to a safe location on the premises and remain there until authorities deem it safe to return to normal operations.

REPORTING A THREAT
It is critically important that members of our community report perceived and potential threats in a timely manner. It is better to err on the side of notifying the appropriate individuals than to remain silent. The University has resources with which to assess these situations and the individual of concern. If you believe an individual poses an imminent threat to himself or herself, or a member(s) of the University community, please step up and call the Department of Public Safety at 310.506.4441.

LIVESAFE - SMARTPHONE APP
The LiveSafe smartphone app allows users to connect with emergency responders at the touch of a button: call 911, call and/or text Public Safety, or learn more about the University’s emergency procedures and campus policies under the Resources tab. The app also includes SafeWalk, a person-to-person virtual security escort.
