VALUES-CENTERED

A values-centered leader is one who believes ethics and profits need not be mutually exclusive to achieve success in business. In fact, we believe they should go hand in hand, providing you as a student with many opportunities to explore values-centered leadership in and out of the classroom.

SEER Program

SEER Symposium

Our certificate program in social, environmental, and ethical responsibility (SEER) in business practice allows full-time MBA students to earn a credential in corporate social responsibility along with their MBA. And while many sustainable business programs focus on “the triple bottom line”–people, planet, profits—our SEER certificate program goes a step beyond by adding a fourth factor: product. Great products are embedded with SEER values from the earliest stages of product development, and our program addresses how to achieve that goal.

Our annual SEER Symposium invites the business community, students, and faculty to collaborate in thought-provoking discussions on sustainability and ethical decision-making. The most recent symposium explored the nature of values-led businesses and the method leaders use to make difficult decisions while staying true to the organization’s mission.

Values-Centered Leadership Lab The Values-Centered Leadership Lab (VCLL) is a student-driven organization supporting leadership collaboration between the academic and business worlds. It supports activities and events that strengthen the presence of ethical practices and social responsibility in corporate management and entrepreneurship.

“ Supporting the Pepperdine E2B program was an extremely worthwhile undertaking. Investment in time and effort was minimal for the chance to have several teams work on a difficult marketing problem. The use of these ‘outside’ experts removed the bounds of internal thinking and provided some creative solutions to issues we never thought about.” Michael Baldridge Director, Strategic and Market Planning Baxter BioScience

E2B Education to Business The Education to Business (E2B) Applied Learning Program is an innovative course which brings senior executives and students together to solve a business challenge in the classroom. Since its inception, E2B has encompassed more than 235 live cases, resulting in 600,000 hours of research and analysis. As a live-case student, you will work closely with management from a wide range of industries and organizations, including small, entrepreneurial companies as well as Fortune 500 corporations, on a business issue that is current and relevant to today’s workplace.

EXPERIENCE-DRIVEN

COLLABORATIVE

Our commitment to small classes fosters a collaborative learning experience that encourages thoughtful discussion and in-depth debate. As a result, you will learn not only from faculty, but also from your peers, Pepperdine alumni, and executives who are dedicated to sharing their knowledge with the next generation of business leaders.

Student Industry Groups Pepperdine’s student body is active in a variety of student clubs to complement the classroom experience. From industry groups in such fields as marketing, finance, and global business to the business school’s signature Values-Centered Leadership Lab, you have unlimited opportunities to enhance your learning and make a difference in the community.

The Dean’s Executive Leadership Series Our signature speaker series brings leading business executives, authors, and thought leaders to campus for an interactive, informative discussion with students, faculty, and alumni. Former series speakers have included Korn/ Ferry International’s current office managing director for Southern California, Caroline Nahas; current Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan; and Fox Filmed Entertainment chair and CEO James Gianopulos.

ACG-Southern California Cup Competition Held annually by the Association for Corporate Growth, the ACG Cup is a case-study competition between top business schools that tests students’ judgment and knowledge about mergers and acquisitions, investment banking, and private equity. Teams take on the role of financial consultants, perform a valuation for a hypothetical company, evaluate an offer to purchase stock, and provide strategic alternatives to the owners. In 2012 the Graziadio School team won First Place and $10,000 in prize money.

COLLABORATIVE “ Pepperdine has provided value to my personal life though the friendships that I’ve made with students and the relationships I’ve made with professors. I think that it has deepened my understanding of the opportunities that exist for me because the professors are so willing to open doors for us and just enlighten us to opportunities that we may not have known existed before.” Jordann Schoonover Full-Time MBA (2015)

ENTREPRENEURIAL

Our entrepreneurial spirit draws from our own academic heritage. Our school benefactor, George Graziadio, was the entrepreneurial drive behind and founder of Imperial Bank (now Comerica). George Pepperdine, a pioneer in the automotive industry and founder of Western Auto Supply Company, founded Pepperdine University itself. As a Graziadio student, there are many ways to explore your entrepreneurial talent.

Business Plan Competition

Entrepreneur’s Journey

Our annual business plan competition gives students a chance to apply the knowledge they’ve learned in launching their own business. Student teams compete for a chance to win cash prizes totaling $18,500, including a $10,000 grand prize. A distinguished panel of entrepreneurs and venture capitalists judge the competition and provide invaluable feedback and networking opportunities. In 2012 MySpace former CEO Michael Jones served as the keynote speaker.

Our Entrepreneur’s Journey is a one-day symposium connecting entrepreneurs, small business owners, angel investors, venture capitalists, industry executives, and today’s brightest thought leaders on entrepreneurship. The event culminates in a Fast Pitch Competition to promote their start-up idea to a panel of experts for the chance to win $1,000.

Entrepreneurship Concentration Entrepreneurship is, at its core, a creative activity. It involves starting a new venture with an innovative idea—frequently for a market that currently does not exist. As a result, our entrepreneurship concentration for MBA students is built upon courses designed to help tap into creativity and then translate a creative vision into a real business that not only produces wealth, but also allows for personal values.

ENTREPRENEURIAL “ Whether you are an entrepreneur or an executive at a Fortune 500 company, you need to know how to systematically tap into your imagination. Would you rather run in the back of the pack or move to the front with new, exciting ideas?” Larry Cox, PhD Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship
