Message from the President It might have all started in a sandbox for me. I will never forget my Sunday school lessons many years ago and, especially, when learning called for acting out Bible stories. A sandbox was often used to bring us closer to Moses and his leadership in the desert. The story of the Ten Commandments, the parting of the Red Sea, the story of Samson, and so many others all came alive in that same sandbox. We learned about courage, trust, failure, and famine while leaning into the cool, fascinating textures of that simple sandbox. I think we also began to grasp the majesty of our God and the tapestry of our faith leading us inexorably toward Christ. For he has roots, just as we do, in the narrative of the lives of Ruth and Esther, the teachings of Song of Songs, Lamentations, and the wisdom of Ecclesiastes. Deep roots enable us today. Our faith is not shallow and our heritage is richly nourished by the taproot of these stories for the ages. Not unlike the blessing of older generations when we gather for a holiday feast, with their stories of ancestors who must never be forgotten, steeping ourselves in the “sandbox of an heirship that traces to Genesis is ennobling and important. As I grew older, it was the majesty of God, seen through the books of the Old Testament, his steadfast love, his high, immutable expectations of us, the tragic tendency of his children to fail but to rise again which prepared me for the brother, Christ Jesus, through whom I pray every day of my life as I approach the throne. It was the same throne I came to know in my youth but I was prepared for its power through stories from long ago. May we never let dust settle on our love for our roots in the Old Testament. May we nurture our future as we consider all that has gone before to enable this precious moment in our lives.

MESSAGE FROM
Mike Cope Salvation.
Five Smooth Stones is the first book for pastors that I wrote. I have always thought it was my best. Thank you for reinforcing its message—focused on the "five scrolls" of the Old Testament—at the 2017 Pepperdine Bible Lectures. I am grateful! —Eugene Peterson Author of over 30 books, including Five Smooth Stones for Pastoral Work, and translator of The Message
Is there a concept that’s more needed? It’s a robust word that encompasses the ever-present work of God in our world to bring healing. It points to God’s shalom, to the setting of things right, to wholeness. While it does point to “life beyond,” its immediate impact is right now in the nooks and crannies of our lives. “Today salvation has come to [your] house,” Jesus told Zacchaeus. My long “Eugene Peterson phase” began in the late 1980s (and continues today!), and one of his first books I read was entitled Five Smooth Stones for Pastoral Work. In it, Peterson wrote about how the “five scrolls”—Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther—became tied to major festivals and a fast through the Jewish calendar; about how they pointed to God’s attempts to bring wholeness to our daily lives (eating, sexuality, relationships, enjoyment, grief); and about how they guide spiritual leaders who are doing pastoral work. That brilliant book has been lodged in my mind for almost three decades now. So it’s with thanks to Peterson that we focus this year on these five often-ignored books of the Old Testament. Please come join us in Malibu, May 2–5, as we explore this theme: “Spiritual Rhythms: Scrolls for Robust Salvation.”

THE STORY BEHIND THE THEME Rick Marrs
A series of classes are offered this week, led by scholars and preachers, on each of these books. Song of Songs (8:30 AM) Charles Rix and Doug Peters Ruth (9:30 AM) Tim Willis and Jarrod Robinson Ecclesiastes (1:30 PM) Chris Heard and David Bland Lamentations (2:30 PM) Mark Hamilton and Tim Sensing Esther (3:30 PM) Rick Marrs and Mallory Wyckoff
We leadand lives often driven by the Provost Chief Academic Officer rhythms of the calendar. Our calendars are filled with ordinary days, as well as periodic seasons of celebration and hope (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter) and memories of victory, struggle, or even loss (July 4, Labor Day, Memorial Day). Some of us lead lives punctuated by more particular calendars; those with school-aged children or college students are typically fully conversant with the rhythms of the fall and spring semesters. The rhythms of the season create in us anticipation and excitement; they also allow us to regularly rehearse the most treasured traditions and rituals we associate with each celebratory event. Ancient Israel was no exception to these practices. One of the many ways in which the Bible enriches our lives is through the diversity and breadth of topics addressed by the corpus of books we call Scripture. Among the many books ancient Israel preserved for us are a handful of books known as the Megilloth (“scrolls”). These five smaller gems of wisdom—Ruth, Esther, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and Lamentations— ultimately were associated with key moments commemorating
celebration or, in one case, loss in ancient Israel. Though compact, these five scrolls present us with women who faithfully overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to provide for a mother-in-law embittered by loss in life (Ruth) or a people facing annihilation (Esther). They challenge us to ponder deeply the complexities and at times incomprehensibility of life (Ecclesiastes) while also unashamedly celebrating the joys of human sexuality as creatures of God (Song of Songs). Finally, they force us to grapple with loss of life or possessions, and the seeming absence of God (Lamentations). During this conference, we will hear afresh the powerful messages from these books and, like ancient Israel, celebrate the power of God’s presence in our lives and the transforming power of these stories. Please join us as we consider again the fullness and richness of God’s word and its unsurpassable ability to speak to every facet of our lives.

SPECIAL THEMES 500 Years of Luther The year 2017 marks the 500-year anniversary of Martin Luther’s 95 theses which he is thought to have posted on the door of the All Saints Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Leonard Allen, dean of the Hazelip School of Theology at Lipscomb University, will host a class focused on ways in which Luther’s voice has blessed Churches of Christ (and others!). WEDNESDAY–FRIDAY 8:30–9:15 AM
Love First It’s clear that the work of racial reconciliation isn’t over! We’ve grown all too accustomed to hearing the names in the news. Don McLaughlin, pulpit minister of the racially-diverse North Atlanta Church of Christ and a leader in the area of racial reconciliation, will host this important class on how the people of God can model reconciliation, justice, and compassion in our communities. WEDNESDAY–FRIDAY 2:30–3:15 PM
Hope in the Age of Climate Change It is difficult to be hopeful in the midst of news about climate change. While the Christian basis for hope is the resurrection of Jesus, unfortunately far too many Christians do not connect this belief with the daily witness of their faith. Join associate professor of religion Chris Doran for this session focused on the release of his new book, Hope in the Age of Climate Change, which argues that the resurrection proclaims a notion of hope that should be the foundation of a theology of creation care which manifests itself explicitly in the daily lives of believers. Christian hope not only inspires us to do great and courageous things, but also serves as a critique of current hopeless systems and powers that degrade humans, nonhumans, and the rest of creation. It should impact the way we think about ourselves as human beings, ultimately leading us to humility. An ecologically informed and sensitive theology that sees God’s work as Creator and Redeemer, radically affirmed in Christ’s resurrection, can meet the challenge of being hopeful in the age of climate change. You will receive the Relationship IQ Leader’s Manual and be certified as a Relationship IQ Instructor. This is also an excellent resource to promote intergenerational relationships within the church family. Equip your young adults for healthy relationships and help them draw closer to God. Friday, 8 AM–4:15 PM (with a 10 AM–1 PM break) $250 per person. Register at family.pepperdine.edu. Special PBL rate includes the training and the Relationship IQ Leader’s Manual. DO SINGLES FIT IN YOUR CHURCH? (PRACTICAL STEPS TO MOVE FROM ALIENATION TO UNDERSTANDING AND BELONGING)
As the average age of marriage continues to rise, increasing numbers of people find themselves single in the traditional family-centric church. Singles often feel misunderstood and uncared for while church leaders struggle to include them. This lecture will explore the emotional experience of singles through the framework of ambiguous loss, giving language to express the difficulties of waiting for someone who might not come. We will offer several practical suggestions, both personal and programmatic, on how to help singles feel known and find belonging in your congregation. Friday, 8:30–9:15 AM Kelly Haer is a visiting assistant professor of psychology at Pepperdine and licensed professional counselor. She is a researcher and speaker on the emotional experience of never-married women and is personally very close to the issue, having counseled many single men and women in her professional practice and having been a single adult in the church for over a decade. Adam Haer is a spiritual director and has his MA in philosophy of religion and his MA in spiritual formation and soul care both from the Talbot School of Theology. He has worked in service programming and worship arts for the last 17 years at several large churches.
RAISING RESILIENT CHILDREN AND TEENS
(THE ROLES OF FAMILIES AND CHURCHES)
The director of Pepperdine's Counseling Center will share how college students today (including Christian college students) are more anxious and less able to cope with life's challenges. Parents, families, and church communities will be encouraged to consider their role in helping raise children and teens to become resilient, faithful adults. Friday, 9:30–10:15 AM Connie Horton, PhD, a licensed psychologist, is the associate vice president for student life and the senior director for counseling, health, and wellness at Pepperdine University. She enjoys teaching classes and retreats on parenting, marriage, and women's issues at her home congregation, Conejo Valley Church of Christ, and beyond.
FAMILIES AND FORGIVENESS
(HEALING WOUNDS IN THE INTERGENERATIONAL FAMILY) Forgiveness is often thought of as a "letting go" of pain, anger, and bitterness. In this workshop, participants learn that forgiveness is not so much about "letting go" as it is about "putting back" and restoring as much love and trustworthiness to the relationships as possible. Using the Restoration Therapy Model and Christ's model of forgiveness, participants will understand the need for love and trustworthiness in identity and safety. This workshop teaches interventions that help individuals and families heal through attention to love, justice, and power. Friday, 1:30–4:15 PM Terry Hargrave, PhD, is nationally recognized for his pioneering work with intergenerational families. He has authored numerous professional articles and 11 books including Forgiving the Devil and Families and Forgiveness (2nd ed. with Nicole Zasowski). He is a professor of marriage and family therapy at Fuller Theological Seminary. Sharon Hargrave, LMFT, is the executive director of the Boone Center for the Family at Pepperdine University and the founder of MarriageStrong at Fuller Theological Seminary. Sharon and Terry speak nationally and internationally on issues pertaining to couples in ministry, marriage, intergenerational relationships, parenting, and the Restoration Therapy Model.
The Boone Center for the Family at Pepperdine is a training and resource center that promotes healthy relationship skills for lives of purpose, service, and leadership. Focusing on the relational and spiritual development of young adults and married couples, the Boone Center offers specialized education and programming to young adults, professionals, and communities of faith to strengthen their own relationships and impact the lives of those they serve. The Pepperdine Bible Lectures are where we come together as a family. What my anniversary gives to my marriage, the Pepperdine Bible Lectures have become for our fellowship. It's not just about the renewal of love; it's also the renewal of God's vision. - Dave Clayton, Ethos Church, Nashville
