DEAR PATRONS, What makes a good show? At the Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts at Pepperdine University, we spend a lot of time asking ourselves this question. Selecting the right artists is key—musicians, dancers, and performers with incredible talent and relentless determination to perfect their craft. It is an honor to share these artists with you as we announce our 2022–2023 season of performances and museum exhibitions. You—our loyal and enthusiastic audience—are also crucial to creating a great show. By supporting the artists you’ve loved for years and taking a chance on some new-to-you artists, you help make wonderful performances happen— and help create magical moments we’ll all talk about for years to come. FREDERICK R. WEISMAN MUSEUM OF ART 2022—2023 Exhibition Schedule
Open Tuesday–Sunday, 11 am–5 pm, and one hour prior to most performances through intermission.
TO BOUGH AND TO BEND
August 30, 2022—March 26, 2023 Trees feature prominently in the origin stories of many world religions. Ancient history recounts how their shade and branches have been sites of contemplation, suffering, and renewal. Today, trees still speak: deep root systems form tangled webs of communication, blunt stumps nod to deforestation, and charred limbs attest to fires started by our own hands. First curated by Bridge Projects, a gallery that catalyzes interdisciplinary explorations of contemporary art, spirituality, and religious traditions, To Bough and To Bend explores these ecological issues through the work of 30 artists who look to religious and historic art practices to guide us back into fellowship with these old friends and the living world we share. Left: Lucas Reiner, Station XI - Crucifixion, 2010, drypoint, aquatint, spitbite, and etching on paper, from a portfolio of 15 prints. Courtesy of Bridge Projects. Right: Patty Wickman, Circumscribe, 2017–2019, oil on linen. Courtesy of Bridge Projects.
THOUGHT PARTNERS
SENIOR THESIS EXHIBITION
What role should the Weisman Museum of Art play on Pepperdine’s Christian campus? As the Weisman turns 30, this conversation series seeks diverse answers to the question of how the museum can serve the University’s mission, and how the mission can in turn be shaped by art and artists. Thought Partners will feature public discussions with scholars, artists, philanthropists, and curators who work at the intersection of art and religion, bridging these spheres of inquiry in novel ways that can inform the future of the Weisman and its place on Pepperdine’s campus.
Art by graduating seniors from the Seaver College Studio Art program is displayed in the annual senior thesis exhibition.

Americana: A Murder Ballad By Morna Young Cathy Thomas-Grant, Director “Americana is a place of dreams/ And our young protagonists could embody this hope/ Though soon their fates will be in dire straits/ Imprisoned to the ethereal land of folk . . .” A nation’s youth are trapped in a murder ballad they cannot escape. A gunman lurks on every corner. He’s behind you. He’s beside you. He’s inside your mind. This is freedom. This is a war zone. This is Americana. But how do we break the ballad? Fresh from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe of 2022, winners of multiple Fringe First awards Pepperdine Scotland makes new music from old songs in this perpetual story of fear. While neither prop guns nor the sound of guns is used in this play, this is a story about gun violence in schools. This play also contains profanity. Recommended for ages 16+.
