PARENT and FAMILY GUIDE

WELCOME

from President Jim Gash

Dear Pepperdine Parents and Family Members,

It is with great joy that I welcome you and your child to Pepperdine University as you embark together on this exciting voyage of knowledge, faith, and self-discovery. As a Christian institution, we know that education is about more than just academic achievement and advancement; it requires the nurturing of the whole person—mind, body, and soul. Pepperdine’s commitment to this belief sets us apart from other universities across the globe, and it is likely a major factor in your decision to entrust us with your greatest treasure. Our mission is to strengthen your children for lives of purpose, service, and leadership. And as the parents of three Seaver graduates, Joline and I know full well the joy and pain of watching our children both conquer obstacles and struggle to overcome the semester’s latest challenge. The unique perspectives of our children continue to help guide our family’s philanthropy as we seek to model Pepperdine’s motto “Freely ye received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).

As the family of new students, your partnership and generosity make a tremendous impact on our provision of the best possible education and experience. Your commitment of time, talent, and treasure to Pepperdine will serve as an inspiration to others, and your child will develop and carry that sense of giving and gratitude long after they matriculate. In using this guide to settle your student into their new home, I challenge you to identify areas of interest for your family and then engage with us as an integral part of our Pepperdine family.

Welcome to Pepperdine.

Warmly,

A PARENT PERSPECTIVE

The first year at Pepperdine will be an exciting, challenging, and transforming experience for both you and your student. Parents play a critical role in student adjustment, so it is important to be equipped with helpful advice and strategies you can use to be supportive.

SOCIAL AND ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENT

Homesickness is a common challenge during the first year. Students indicate that it helps if family members keep in close contact. Another area of adjustment is having a roommate and all aspects of sharing the space— especially if the student is accustomed to having their own room. Students recommend that new students wait a couple of months before going home for the first time; Thanksgiving is suggested as a good first-visit goal—spending time on campus helps students connect with the Pepperdine community. Finally, going home again can be challenging because everyone has changed—the student, the family, friends, as well as the community.

Encourage your student to get involved in extracurricular activities to help them develop leadership and social skills. Listen with an open mind to your student’s concerns. The academic pace can be an adjustment, and it may be overwhelming at first. And although it is important to offer your student advice, college is a time

for your student to grow, so it is also necessary to allow your student to make their own choices.

PERSONAL VEHICLE

Although it is easier to get around Los Angeles if you have a car, there are alternative ways to do so. If a student does not have a car, they are more likely to develop a strong connection to the Pepperdine University community. Parking is extremely limited due to the ongoing improvements on campus, but it is free. Students are also able to rent cars by the hour by contacting our Department of Public Safety.

FINANCES

The amount of spending money a student needs varies among students. Many things to do on campus or in the Los Angeles area do not cost additional money. Frequent expenses include: recreational activities, occasional meals out, membership dues ranging from $500 to $1,000 for Greek organizations, and some campus events.

GREETINGS

from the Vice President for Student Affairs

Greetings!

As a proud and grateful Seaver alumna and the vice president for student affairs, I am so happy to welcome you to the Pepperdine family.

Please know that as amazing as the academic offerings are at Pepperdine, a whole world of outside-the-classroom experiences also awaits, where meaningful memories are made, relationships are developed, and wellness is supported.

Community and belonging are created through a vibrant on-campus residential community, numerous special events and traditions, and a large menu of student organizations, leadership development opportunities, and student employment experiences. Pepperdine students are seen as more than bright students, they are supported holistically with opportunities to develop resilience and thrive holistically in their physical, mental health, and spiritual lives.

Encourage your students to engage deeply in this beautiful Pepperdine community. My team can’t wait to welcome them and support them on their journeys.

With anticipation,

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 is a federal law that protects the rights of students by defining who has access to student educational records. FERPA laws transfer ownership of the educational records directly to the student; therefore, parents have no inherent rights to view, change, or control a college student’s educational records. In general, unless your student gives you access to their academic and/ or financial records, we will not be able to share any related information with you. Academic records include registration, schedule, and grades. The student account is a detailed record of all costs of attendance, miscellaneous charges, and related financial assistance. Students and those to whom they have granted access

will be able to view, pay, and update student account information online through WaveNet’s Student Center. Please ask your student to grant you guest access to their account! This is the only way that you will be able to access your student’s information including account balance, payments, refunds, financial assistance, and/or grades. Your student may designate you as a guest user and will determine your level of access. We encourage you to speak directly to your student about this service.

For more information please contact the Office of Student Information and Services at 310.506.7999

STUDENT ACCOUNTS

The online student account serves as the official student bill. The account will be updated automatically with every charge or credit posted to the student account. The amount due will be available by viewing the student account online through WaveNet and will reflect the charges, credits, amounts due, and specific due dates for each.

Students are responsible for viewing their student account online, noting the account balances due, and making the appropriate arrangements for payment to be received by the due date. If you as a parent wish to receive email notifications regarding the account activity, please have your student grant you guest access to his or her WaveNet account and sign you up for billing reminder emails. You may also ask your student to grant you access to Account Detail so that if you have any questions and wish to contact Student Accounts, we will be able to discuss the account with you.

Conveniently located on campus in the recently renovated Student Assistance Center, the SHC is staffed with board-certified physicians, a physician’s assistant, a registered dietician/nutritionist, registered nurses, medical assistants, and administrative personnel. Our diverse team is skilled in working with college-age patients and provides a professional and welcoming environment for students seeking care.

The SHC provides health services to any enrolled Pepperdine student. These services are provided in the SHC without charge. There is a charge for services such as laboratory tests, travel medicine vaccinations, and medications. Available services include men’s and women’s health, care for illness and injury, immunizations, injections, labs, nutrition, respiratory problems,

and dermatology. The SHC also offers specialized clinics such as vaccination, travel medicine, and STI/HIV testing.

TimelyCare is our 24/7 medical and mental health services available to all students without charge.

Students can call 310.506.4315, option 3, for more information about available health services or to schedule an appointment.

Please note that although the SHC does not bill insurance directly, the center provides a walkout statement (superbill) to patients and directions regarding how to seek reimbursements from their health insurance plan.

Please visit the Student Health Center website for more information

UNIVERSITY HEALTH INSURANCE REQUIREMENT

Pepperdine University requires that all students, both domestic and international (including those studying abroad), provide proof of a US-based health insurance plan or enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). To meet this requirement, new and returning students must select one of two options on their AHP Insurance Dashboard each academic year: confirm SHIP option by clicking the “enroll” button or provide proof of an existing US-based health insurance plan by clicking the “waive” button.

Scan the code at left for more information about academic health plans

For questions regarding SHIP, the AHP Insurance Dashboard, requirement deadlines, please visit the University Health Insurance Requirement website

STUDENT COUNSELING

The Counseling Center provides free, confidential services to Pepperdine students, including individual, couples, and group counseling; walk-in consultations; and psychoeducational outreach programming. Students come to the Counseling Center for a variety of concerns, such as homesickness, depression, anxiety, and addictive behaviors. The center also offers psychological consultation to students, faculty, staff, or parents who are concerned about a student.

A caring, licensed, professional staff member will meet your or your student’s needs.

CAREER SERVICES

CAREER CENTER

The Career Center assists students with career exploration and planning while also helping them build meaningful professional experience while in school. Students can take a first-year career-education course, participate in a job-shadow program, and join local and national company tours. Students also have access to cutting-edge career-preparation technology. Our programs, resources, and tools are designed to create the foundation for career readiness skills that are needed to secure internships and professional experiences.

Throughout the year, the Career Center hosts industry-focused fairs and a larger career expo featuring more than 50 employers. It also offers on-campus employer visits, resume review drop-in hours, mock interviews, job and internship search strategy sessions, career treks, and job shadow days.

A team of career advisors provide tailored coaching support for students seeking internships, jobs, or graduate school admission. Special offerings like industryspecific networking events, the Career Coaching Program, and the Ask an Alum series help students prepare for the world of work and gain the confidence employers recognize.

Students eligible for Federal Work Study may work on campus or participate in the Community Service Program, which offers opportunities in education, healthcare, social work, law enforcement, and government. Off-campus opportunities are available in childcare, private tutoring, retail, and office management.

CAMPUS SAFETY

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and secure environment while respecting the rights and dignity of individuals using programs and facilities of Pepperdine University.

Specific services include 24/7 security patrols, emergency response, threat assessment, building security, parking/traffic enforcement, campus safety escorts, event support, investigations, and dissemination of safety-related information. Other services include roadside assistance for problems such as vehicle lockouts and jump starts, the Safe Rides Program and management of the University’s fire and lifesaving equipment. DPS encourages the use of the free LiveSafe app, available on iTunes or the Google Play store. It offers users a variety of campus safety resources; the ability to report concerns anonymously; and to communicate directly with DPS and 911, if needed.

SAFE RIDES

Pepperdine’s Safe Rides program exists to provide a safer community. If a student does not feel safe in an off-campus location, regardless of the circumstances, they are encouraged to call DPS for assistance at 310.506.4441.

DPS will facilitate your student’s safe return to campus by using the appropriate resources. This is not a confidential service, but students should not fear punishment for seeking assistance when in an unsafe situation.

STUDENT ACCESSIBILITY

The Office of Student Accessibility (OSA) supports students with accessibility needs in all aspects of their Pepperdine experience.

The University provides services and accommodations as mandated by the American Disabilities Act (ADA) and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Registering with the office is an interactive process, based on the student’s narrative and supporting documentation. Because each disability and the particular circumstance is unique,

the OSA encourages all students with disabilities to contact them to talk about specific needs.
