SEASON OUTLOOK Pepperdine Coach Jack Kocur is feeling optimistic and encouraged about the upcoming 2009 water polo season, largely in part due to his six returning seniors. “These guys have played together for four years,” Kocur said. “It’s their turn to be on top of the pedestal. They’ve wanted that leadership for a long time and now they have the opportunity to show their competitiveness.” The Waves head into the 2009 season ranked fifth nationally. The team finished last year’s season ranked No. 2 behind USC. “I’m hoping for a comparable season to last year,” said Kocur, whose 2008 team went 21-7 overall and took eventual national champion USC to the final seconds in the MPSF Tournament championship game. “My returners with the addition of a strong freshman class should make for a very competitive team.” The Waves’ senior class includes two returning starters and four other returning players who saw quite a bit of action last season. JP MacDonell, a co-captain in 2009, made the 2008 All-American third team after finishing as the team’s leading scorer with 52 goals. He also played on the USA’s World University Games team during summer 2009. “JP has continued his growth and leadership,” Kocur said. “I believe he can take the team to the next level with the leadership he has learned from the class

before. His biggest contribution to the team will be his experience this summer with international competition.” Clayton Snyder, the other cocaptain, made the 2008 All-MPSF third team and was also picked to the MPSF’s All-Academic squad. He scored 26 goals last season. “I’m excited about Clayton,” Kocur said. “He will be a leading force on the offense and allow other players to shine. He shows leadership in and out of the pool and will be a key to the overall success of the team.” Taylor Watson had a strong finish to the 2008 season and scored 12 goals. “Taylor had a redshirt year, making him the oldest guy on the team,” Kocur said. “He’s not a man of many words, but his actions tell it all. I look forward to seeing him walk the walk this season.” Brett Auer helped the Waves upset Stanford in the semifinals of the 2008 MPSF Tournament with three goals. He missed most of the season due to an injury and finished with seven goals. “Brett has put the pressure on himself to have a great year,” Kocur said. “The key will be to stay healthy and have longevity. I predict he will thrive this season.” Kocur added that he expects

significant playing time and big contributions from his remaining seniors and redshirt juniors. “Christian Cardey, Preston Lujan, Sam Busby and Jacob Young will make a big impact this season,” Kocur said. “They will be key on counterattacks and defense this season.” Young led that group with 12 goals, while Cardey had nine last season. Andrew Milcovich is a key member of the junior class who scored 18 goals last season and was named to MPSF AllAcademic squad. “Andrew is a returning starter,” Kocur said. “I’m looking to him to be a true finisher this season. He is someone who we will be looking to for those last-minute goals.” Four redshirts from last season will attempt to contribute this season. Travis Gough, Matt Brown, Jonathan Flowers and Milos Purkovic will look to take a place in the Waves’ lineup. Fourteen freshmen round out the team. “Our freshman class ranks as one of the best incoming classes I’ve ever had the pleasure to coach,” Kocur said. “Several of these players have international experience which will prepare them for Division I water polo.”

JACK KOCUR HEAD COACH • FOURTH SEASON Jack Kocur, a former Pepperdine All-American and member of its 1997 national championship team, begins his fourth season as head coach of the men’s water polo program in 2009. After four seasons as an assistant coach, Kocur was elevated to interim head coach for the 2006 season when Terry Schroeder took a season off to work with the U.S. National Team. When the U.S. qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Schroeder was named head coach, Kocur became the full-time head coach at Pepperdine in 2007. In three seasons as head coach, Kocur’s overall record is 61-34 (.642). Since 2002 and the seven seasons that Kocur has been part of the program’s coaching staff, Pepperdine is 129-77 (.626). Although Kocur’s first team at Pepperdine finished with a 13-17 record in 2006, he redshirted several of its top players in order to get an edge in the next couple of seasons. That plan worked as the Waves went 27-10 overall in 2007, the most wins by a Pepperdine team in more than 20 years. Then, in 2008, the Waves finished with a #2 national ranking, went 21-7 overall and tied for second place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. He was awarded MPSF co-Coach of the Year honors in 2008. In his first season as an assistant coach (2002), the Waves won the MPSF’s regular-season title and finished with a #3 national ranking. He served as an assistant coach with the USA team that competed at the 2009 World University Games in Serbia. Kocur trained with the U.S. National Team for six years on a consistent basis after graduating from Pepperdine. During his tenure with the national team, Kocur competed in more than 125 international games. He helped the American squad win the 1998 U.S. Open and finish fourth at the 1998 Goodwill Games and the 1999 French Open. As a senior in 1997, he was one of four Pepperdine players to be named an All-American first teamer as the Waves rolled to a 25-3 record and a national championship. Pepperdine defeated local rival USC by a final score of 8-7 in overtime in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to claim the school’s first-ever NCAA water polo title. During his collegiate career at Pepperdine, Kocur tallied 138 goals (tied for 14th place on the school’s all-time list) and set the school record with 28 two-point goals. He was an All-American third team selection as a sophomore in 1994 and an honorable mention choice during his junior campaign in 1995. Pepperdine posted a cumulative 67-38 (.638) record during Kocur’s collegiate career, and the Waves rolled to a perfect 8-0 mark in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play during the 1997 campaign. A prep standout at Royal High School in Simi Valley, Calif., Kocur was selected the 1992 Ventura County Player of the Year and the Marmonte League’s Most Valuable Player. A three-time All-Marmonte League first team selection, Kocur registered 372 career goals at Royal High, where he also lettered in baseball and swimming. He was tabbed the school’s Athlete of the Year in 1992-93. Kocur was a member of the U.S. Junior National Team from 198993, and helped the American squad win the gold medal at the 1989 Junior Pan American Games in Mexico and claim first place at the 1993 Canadian Open. He also previously coached water polo at nearby HarvardWestlake High School. Kocur graduated from Pepperdine in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in sports administration. He currently resides in Calabasas with his wife, Jodie, and their son Camden and daughter Sadie.

TERRY SCHROEDER DIRECTOR OF WATER POLO OPERATIONS For 20 years, Dr. Terry Schroeder was one of the top collegiate water polo coaches in the nation. Following the 2008 Olympics, he earned the right to be known as one of the best coaches in the world. After serving as Pepperdine’s head coach from 1986-2005, Schroeder stepped aside to work with the U.S. National Team, though he continues to contribute to the Waves’ program as its Director of Water Polo Operations. He would eventually be named the head coach for the U.S. and his team became one of the top stories of the 2008 Beijing Olympics as he led an unheralded group, which included Pepperdine alums Merrill Moses and Jesse Smith, to the silver medal. His U.S. squad entered the Olympics ranked ninth in the world but the team won its group and defeated Serbia in the semifinals before falling to Hungary in the gold-medal game. The Waves enjoyed tremendous success under Schroeder, as he posted a record of 340-220 (.607) in his 20 seasons as head coach. Pepperdine earned eight NCAA Championships berths and claimed the program’s first-ever national championship in 1997. The 1997 squad went 25-3 (.893) and posted the best winning percentage in school history. The campaign ended with an 8-7 overtime win over local rival USC in the NCAA title game, held at the International Swimming Hall of Fame Aquatics Complex in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Not only was Schroeder the 1997 National Coach of the Year, he also earned Mountain Pacific Coach of the Year honors in 1997 and 1998 and was the Big West Conference Coach of the Year in 1989. He also led the Waves to a third-place NCAA finish in 1991, fourth place in 1989 and fifth place in 1987, 1990 and 1992. Regarded as one of the world’s all-time outstanding players, Schroeder was the U.S. National Team’s captain from 1983-92 and was part of the team for 16 years. He was a four-time Olympian for the U.S., which won silver medals in 1984 and 1988 and placed fourth in 1992. He helped the U.S. win its first-ever major international competition in 1991, as the Americans captured the FINA Cup in Barcelona by beating longtime nemesis Yugoslavia in the title game. Noted as a leading spokesman for the sport of water polo, Schroeder has been featured in numerous national publications, including Sports Illustrated and the New York Times. He modeled for a statue that was unveiled prior to the 1984 Olympic Games, which sits outside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. He also carried the U.S. flag at the closing ceremonies of the 1998 Seoul Olympics. Schroeder was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2005, the U.S. Water Polo Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1985. As a Pepperdine student-athlete, he earned All-American honors in 1977, 1978 and 1980 and is the school’s leader in goals scored in a career (392) and a season (138 in 1978). The Waves finished fourth at the NCAA Championships three times with Schroeder. He graduated with honors from Pepperdine in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine. He completed his doctorate studies at the Palmer-West Chiropractic School in Sunnyvale, Calif., and operates a chiropractic office in Westlake Village, Calif. He and his wife, Lori, reside in Westlake Village and they have two daughters, Leanna and Sheridan.

GARY O’BRIEN ASSISTANT COACH Gary O’Brien begins the 2009 season in his second year as an assistant men’s water polo coach. During his first season with the Waves, he helped Pepperdine to a #2 national ranking, a second-place finish in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and a 21-7 record. He is also the current head coach for the Malibu youth and masters’ water polo club. His last collegiate experience was as an assistant coach at UCLA in 1998. O’Brien coached semi-professional water polo for the Brisbane Barracudas in Australia in 2003-04. In addition, he has coached at Santa Monica City College, Cross Roads High School, Santa Monica High School and Milken Community High School. He was also the Southern Region Premier Division I coach in 1999-2000. A 1993 graduate of UCLA, he lettered for the Bruins from 1989-91. He earned All-American honors there as a senior. He went on to play professionally in Ireland, France and New Zealand. Aside from his passion for water polo, O’Brien is a published author of the inspirational novel A Quest for Happiness. He resides in Malibu with his wife Catherine and children Cheyenne and Maximus.

MARTY MATTHIES VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH Marty Matthies, a former national champion at California and the son of Pepperdine women’s volleyball coach Nina Matthies, has joined the Waves’ water polo program in 2009 as a volunteer assistant coach. Matthies lettered for California from 2003-06 and was a member of 2006 NCAA championship squad. He was a three-time All-American (2004-06) and earned All-MPSF honors twice. He won the Golden Bear Coaches’ Award in 2004. His coaching experience includes a stint as a graduate assistant coach for the California men’s water polo team and head coach of the Orinda Club U-18 women and senior teams. He has competed with the USA National Team at the senior, junior and youth level. Matthies, who grew up in the Malibu area and attended HarvardWestlake High School, graduated from California with a degree in ISF (Maturation in Modern Society) in 2008. His brother, Morgan, played for the Pepperdine men’s water polo team from 2001-03.

PEPPERDINE WATER POLO HISTORY Long one of Pepperdine University’s most successful teams, the internationally acclaimed men’s water polo program continues to build on its terrific history. It should not be too surprising that Pepperdine emerged as a power in water polo. After all, the picturesque campus is situated just up the hill from Malibu Beach, and Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool was the site of the 1984 Olympic water polo competition. Pepperdine has advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times in its history and captured the national crown in 1997 with an 8-7 overtime victory over local rival USC at the International Swimming Hall of Fame Aquatics Complex in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Pepperdine teams have compiled an overall record of 648-382-8 (.628). The Waves have won at least shares of conference titles nine times, most recently with Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season crowns in 1997 and 2002. The Waves have finished in the top 10 in the national rankings every year since 1976. The water polo program was instituted in 1975, and quickly emerged as a national power under the guidance of head coach Rick Rowland. Following a first-place finish in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association in 1977, Pepperdine earned its first trip to the NCAA Championships and finished fourth at the eight-team competition in Providence, R.I. Rowland served as Pepperdine’s head coach for 11 seasons from 197585, and directed the program to a cumulative overall record of 247-128-8 (.655). Rowland led Pepperdine to four NCAA Championships appearances (finishing in fourth place each time), and the Waves captured the PCAA tournament title in 1977 and regular-season titles in 1980 and 1984.

Terry Schroeder, who earned three-time All-American honors at Pepperdine and is regarded as one of the top players and coaches in the sport’s history, assumed the head coaching duties prior to the 1986 season. Before taking a sabbatical to coach the U.S. National Team after the 2005 season, Schroeder directed Pepperdine to a cumulative 20-year record of 340-220 (.607) and eight NCAA Championships berths. The Waves won or shared six regularseason conference titles under his watch: one with the PCAA (1986), three in the Big West (1989, 1990 and 1991) and two in the MPSF (1997 and 2002). A number of former Pepperdine players have fared well at the international level, including Schroeder, who served as the team captain for the U.S. National Team from 1983-92 and earned a silver medal at both the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games. Geoffrey Clark, an All-American in 1989, 1990 and 1991, represented his native Australia at the 1992 Olympic Games. Jeremy Pope, who helped Pepperdine win the NCAA title in 1997, was an alternate at the 2000 Olympics. Jesse Smith competed in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, and then Smith and Merrill Moses won silver medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics under the leadership of Schroeder. Thirteen Pepperdine players — Geoffrey Clark, Mike Grier, Alan Herrmann, Adam Hewko, Jack Kocur, Greg Lonzo, Ned Maggiora, Merrill Moses, David Myers, Sasa Poljak, Jeremy Pope, Terry Schroeder and Jesse Smith — have earned AllAmerican first team honors a total of 21 times. Clark, Schroeder and Smith were All-American first team selections three times, while Grier and Pope were two-time selections. Grier and Clark were tabbed the NCAA’s Player of the Year in 1984 and 1991, respectively, while Herrmann earned similar honors in 1997 from U.S. Water Polo as Pepperdine won its first-ever NCAA crown. Pepperdine men’s water polo players have been All-Americans of any sort 80 times.

1997 CHAMPIONS RECORDS The Pepperdine water polo team has advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times and has compiled a cumulative record to date of 18-17 (.514). RALEIGH RUNNELS MEMORIAL POOL Site of the 1984 Olympic water polo competition, Pepperdine’s Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool is recognized as a sparkling blue jewel carved amidst the rugged Santa Monica Mountains. The Pepperdine facility has gained prominence and fame as one of the premier aquatic centers, located on one of the most picturesque campuses in the world. Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool also served as the host facility for the 1983 FINA Cup water polo competition. The U.S. National Water Polo team has trained extensively at the Malibu-based pool, which is a popular spot for faculty, staff, students and local residents. Versatility is another key characteristic of the facility. In addition to water polo, Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool has been the site of several distinguished swimming competitions. Named in memory of Raleigh Neal Runnels, son of Pepperdine Chancellor Dr. Charles Runnels and a cancer victim at age 17, the pool was dedicated on April 18, 1976. The facility was primarily funded through the generosity of Mrs. Frank Rogers Seaver and Morris B. Pendleton. Opened for use in 1975, the pool was designed and built by Nader Construction. It contains approximately 700,000 gallons of water, ranges from three to 16 feet in depth and is equipped with one- and three-meter diving boards. The estimated construction cost was $450,000. Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool was renovated in the spring of 1997 with an improved filtering system. Pepperdine’s all-time 34-year record in games played at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool stands at 258-94 (.733). The Waves have posted a winning record at home in 29 of 34 seasons, including a perfect 10-0 record during the national championship season of 1997.

• Malibu is located right alongside the Pacific Ocean, just about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Pepperdine’s picturesque campus is just a few hundred yards up the hill from Malibu Beach. The Malibu area, as well as all of Southern California, offers tremendous recreation, sporting and entertainment opportunities.

• Pepperdine’s motto is “Freely ye received, freely give” (Matt. 10:8).

• Pepperdine is an independent, medium-sized Christian institution committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values. • Approximately 8,000 students are enrolled in five colleges and schools, including Seaver College, the flagship undergraduate school of liberal arts and sciences. A bachelor’s degree is available in nearly 40 areas of study. • Pepperdine was ranked number 56 by the U.S. News and World Report’s list of America’s best colleges in 2009 (and is the only West Coast Conference school in the top 100). • Pepperdine was awarded the title of “Most Beautiful Campus” by the Princeton Review in 2005. • The student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1.

UNIVERSITY • Students and alumni consistently cite the quality, accessibility and caring nature of the faculty and staff as among Pepperdine’s major strengths. • There are 395 full-time teaching faculty, and 98% of full-time faculty have earned doctoral degrees. Students are provided with experiential opportunities, including research projects and internships so that their knowledge can be put to practice. • 75% of Pepperdine undergraduates receive some form of financial assistance. • Pepperdine University is respected both nationally and internationally. Study-abroad programs include Heidelberg, Germany; London, England; Florence, Italy; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lausanne, Switzerland; and Shanghai, China. • Among the 38 different majors offered, the top five at Seaver College are business administration, advertising, international studies, international business, psychology and political science. • The University was founded in 1937 by George Pepperdine, a Christian businessman who established the Western Auto Supply Company.

ATHLETIC

Pepperdine is classified as an NCAA Division I-AAA school (Division I schools that do not sponsor football), and the Waves are one of the very best of their kind. Since the I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association All-Sports Trophy was established, ranking the various schools on their postseason success, Pepperdine has finished in the top six every single time, including in first place twice (2004-05 and 2005-06). In the annual NACDA Director’s Cup standings, which measures overall postseason success, Pepperdine has finished first among all of its West Coast Conference rivals for 13 straight years.

Men’s Basketball

Over the years, the Pepperdine men’s basketball program has made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, captured at least a share of 16 conference titles, won three West Coast Conference Tournament titles and sent dozens of players into professional basketball. Head coach Tom Asbury was one of the top coaches in the WCC’s history from 1989-94 and he has returned to Malibu to help the program thrive once again.

Baseball

The 1992 College World Series champions, Pepperdine baseball has recorded a remarkable 32 straight 30-win seasons. The Waves have advanced to the NCAA Championships 25 times, including five times under head coach Steve Rodriguez. Women’s Basketball

With seven postseason appearances in the last 11 seasons, the Pepperdine women’s basketball team has developed into a consistent winner and a contender in the West Coast Conference. The Waves made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000 with an at-large bid, then captured the WCC Tournament title and subsequent NCAA appearances in 2002, 2003 and 2006, the most recent coming under head coach Julie Rousseau.

Cross Country / Track

Head coach Robert Radnoti has the goal of national prominence for his cross country and track programs. The Waves were extremely strong in these sports at their SouthCentral campus from the 1930s to the 1960s, with All-Americans and Olympians to their credit. However, the programs were dropped briefly when the university moved its campus to Malibu. The Waves have made great strides in cross country over the years and track was added again in the past few years.

Women’s Soccer

One of the youngest programs on Pepperdine’s campus, the women’s soccer team has quickly developed into among the strongest in recent years. Since its inaugural season in 1993, the Waves have posted 10-win seasons 10 times and made the NCAA Tournament five straight years from 2001-05. Head coach Tim Ward has helped his Waves reach the NCAA’s Sweet 16 on two occasions.

SUCCESS Men’s Volleyball

Pepperdine’s most successful program has won five NCAA men’s volleyball championships, second-most of any school, with the last title coming in 2005. The program is synonymous with head coach Marv Dunphy, who was responsible for four of the titles and has also had a long association with USA Volleyball. Pepperdine has made the NCAA Championships event on 15 occasions, including six times in the past decade.

The 1997 NCAA men’s golf champions and a regular at the top of the West Coast Conference’s leaderboard, Pepperdine competes with the nation’s best. The Waves have won 16 WCC titles since 1987 and have 11 straight NCAA regional appearances. Pepperdine won the NCAA title in John Geiberger’s first season and have posted two other top 10 national finishes.

For most of its history, the Pepperdine women’s volleyball program has boasted one of the nation’s top coaches in Nina Matthies, who took over in 1983. Since the West Coast Conference added women’s volleyball, the Waves have been the league’s dominant program with 10 titles. Since 1981, the Waves have made 20 trips to the NCAA Championships, including 11 in the last 12 years.

Men’s Tennis

No team has been more consistent then Pepperdine’s men’s tennis program, which wins the West Coast Conference title and makes the NCAA Tournament with amazing regularity. The Waves have won 40 WCC titles, including 19 in a row. Led by head coach Adam Steinberg, the Waves reached the pinnacle in 2006 and won the national championship.

Pepperdine was the host site of the 1984 Olympic water polo competition, so it should be no surprise that the Waves excel in the sport. Pepperdine has advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times in its history and captured the national crown in 1997. Current coach Jack Kocur was a player on that title team. The Waves have won at least a share of conference titles nine times and have finished in the top 10 in the national rankings every year since 1976.

In the last 16 seasons since Laurie Gibbs became head coach, the Pepperdine women’s golf program has developed into a national championship contender. The Waves have won 11 WCC titles, been to 11 straight NCAA Regional tournaments and have made nine NCAA Championships appearances. The Waves finished second in the nation in 2003 and boast four top-five finishes.

No coach has been on staff at Pepperdine for more consecutive years than Gualberto Escudero, who took over as women’s tennis head coach in 1977-78. For more than 20 years, Pepperdine has thrived in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference. The fact that Pepperdine has won NCAA championships in five different men’s sports is a rare feat, as the Waves are one of only 14 schools to accomplish this. Making it even more noteworthy is that Pepperdine is the only non-BCS school and is by far the smallest. Following are the 14 schools with their enrollment figures. Pepperdine University’s goal is to “strengthen lives for purpose, service and leadership” and the Pepperdine Athletics Department is a strong believer in helping its student-athletes to meet this goal. The school’s athletic teams embrace the concept of volunteerism and service to the community. Teams are regularly taking on projects that will better the lives of others. Step Forward is an annual day held each fall that is devoted to community service, when more than a thousand Pepperdine students, staff, faculty and alumni will disperse throughout Southern California in order to lend a hand to those in need. Pepperdine’s athletic teams have been front and center as part of this event, as well as other service opportunities year-round.

LIFE SKILLS/SAAC The Pepperdine University Athletics Department is committed to a program of life skills that provides educational experiences and services in order to develop well-balanced life styles for student-athletes; to encourage growth in decision making, planning and fulfillment of career and life goals; and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting. The program is required for every incoming freshman and transfer student-athlete. Nationally recognized speakers and a life skills class are part of the program. Topics are chosen to support the following commitment purpose statements: • Commitment to Academic Excellence — To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation. • Commitment to Athletics Excellence — To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletics programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student athlete.

When the West Coast Conference first got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind — to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has grown from that original vision some 57 years ago is a marvelously cohesive athletics league that is competitive at a national level in 13 sports. The eight current members of the WCC span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California, the combined excellence in academics and athletics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. Originally chartered as the California Basketball Association, the five-team league included Pacific, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, San Jose State and Santa Clara, and the firstever men’s basketball game was played January 2, 1953. After three seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became known as the West Coast Athletic Conference in 1956. The name was shortened in 1989. The current alignment of Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, University of Portland, Saint Mary’s College, University of San Diego, University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third-most stable athletic conference in the nation. Only the Ivy League and the Pacific-10 Conference have been together longer. Women’s sports were incorporated into the WCC prior to the 1985-86 season, and the league has made steady improvements in several sports, particularly basketball, soccer and volleyball. Since joining the WCC prior to the 1955-56 season, Pepperdine has claimed 129 WCC regular-season team championships in the following sports: baseball (17), men’s basketball (12), women’s basketball (4), men’s golf (16), women’s golf (11), women’s soccer (1), men’s tennis (40), women’s tennis (21) and women’s volleyball (10). Additionally, the men’s and women’s basketball team have each won the league’s postseason tournament three times. The baseball team has won the WCC Championship Series four times. The league relocated its headquarters in the summer of 1998 to San Bruno near the San Francisco International Airport. The WCC hired Jamie Zaninovich as its commissioner in March 2008.

MPSF

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation was established during the 1992-93 academic year to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In men’s volleyball, the Waves have won five regular season and four tournament titles. Pepperdine competes against BYU, Cal State Northridge, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won 14 of the 17 NCAA men’s volleyball championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine). In men’s water polo, the Waves have won two regular-season crowns. Pepperdine competes against California, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won all 17 NCAA men’s water polo championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine).

PCSC

Pepperdine has been a member of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference for more than 20 years. The PCSC has allowed a number of swimming programs of all shape and size — NCAA Division I, II and III and the NAIA — who are not affiliated with a major conference to come together and participate at a championship meet. The Waves swim against AlaskaFairbanks, Biola, California Baptist, Cal State East Bay, Chapman, Concordia, Fresno Pacific, Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, Seattle, Soka, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz. Pepperdine has always been among the top programs in the PCSC and tied its best-ever finish with a second-place showing in 2008.
