INTERNATIONAL GENEVA FOR AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY An estimated 700 million people worldwide have no access to electricity and an additional 789 million people have unreliable access.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) seeks to develop integrated weather and climate services for the energy sector to accelerate the transition to net-zero carbon emissions and support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. A dedicated climate and energy web portal will inform decision-making on energy resources and resilience.
Through its IEC 62257 series of international standards, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) provides the technical foundation for the design and installation of safe, clean, and efficient STANDARDS off-grid electricity infrastructure, that can later be grid-connected.
Buildings account for 40% of CO2 emissions and around one third of the global consumption of materials. The Framework Guidelines for Energy Efficiency Standards in Buildings developed by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), together with training and policy support, help countries to improve buildings’ energy performance. This benefits the environment and also reduces our energy bills.
Research done by the UN Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) shows how connecting y energy transition to gender g r e en justice and human rights can help overcome inequalities and ensure a just transition to affordable and clean energy for all. UNRISD’s Sustainable Development Performance Indicators encourage companies to measure all these issues and increase their use of renewable energies.
To deliver more food with less and cleaner energy, food and agriculture systems will gradually need to decouple from fossil fuel dependence and embrace renewable energy sources. Under the Energy-Smart Food Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) supports countries access modern energy services in food systems by improving energy efficiency, increasing use of renewable energy and promoting a water-energy-food nexus approach.
The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) promotes energy efficiency policies, technologies, and practices, as well as access to affordable renewable sources of energy to stimulate clean economic growth. UNIDO’s partnerships and activities support countries with low-carbon and low-emissions development opportunities that help them to achieve their industrial development and climate change objectives.
The Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator’s Radar™ highlights the most impactful emerging scientific breakthroughs that can support the transition towards clean and affordable energy. The topics subsequently addressed through diplomacy include accelerating negative emission and energy storage technologies, as well as sustainable economic models to manage climate externalities. GESDA IMPACT INFOGRAPHIC BY THE PERCEPTION CHANGE PROJECT. This infographic has been created with the contributions from PCP Partners Organizations who reacted to PCP’s request in crowd-sourcing information on the impact on the SDG7.
The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) hosts the coordination unit of the Global Platform for Action on Sustainable Energy in Displacement Settings (GPA). It strives to facilitate a collaborative agenda for energy, development, and humanitarian partners to transition to renewable energy and deliver concrete actions of SDG 7 in displacement contexts.
Led by ISO 50001 on energy management systems, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published more than 200 standards related to energy efficiency and renewables, ensuring the interoperability of devices and systems. This encourages the transition to renewable energy sources and opens up markets for innovations that address the global energy challenge.
UN Women developed an action card that showcases steps companies can take towards gender equality and women's empowerment in the renewable energy sector. Companies in the energy sector can use the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) for guidance to ensure that workplaces, marketplaces and communities are gender-equal.
The World Intellectual Property Organization's WIPO GREEN marketplace offers technology solutions to mitigate the effects from unsustainable methods of building and construction, energy production, transport, and storage.
An energy access program led by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) that will support 18 African countries - home to 312 million people without electricity - to close their energy access gap by improving the commercial viability of mini-grids. The AMP is expected to beneficiate 400,000 people directly and 29 million indirectly while avoiding GHGs emissions equivalent to the amount generated by 7 coal power-plants in one year.
