In addition to bicycling, ATVing, shopping, cheese and beer, Monroe stands out as a great destination to simply have a good time! To say Monroe has an event for every interest might be going too far, but the calendar certainly offers variety:

For those seeking adventure and entertainment - the Monroe Balloon & Blues Fest in June - with balloon flights and glows, plus live music, arts and crafts, and an antique car show. All events are held at the Green County Fairgrounds. New this year in August - Taste at Twining, a benefit for “Everyone Needs a Home” (pet food pantry, no-fee spay and neuter clinics) - with 20+ craft beer vendors and live music at the bandshell in scenic Twining Park. For collectors of all sorts - shows featuring stamps, coins, postcards, model railroading, farm toys, antique tractors, hand-crafted items and artisan creations. A returning favorite in June and September - Green County “Pickers” Flea & Antique Market at the Green County Fairgrounds. For music lovers and theatre goers - Main Street Monroe’s Concerts on the Square, “Squeezebox Nights” at Turner Hall, and performances at Monroe Arts Center and Monroe Theatre Guild. For a taste of the rural side - Main Street Monroe’s “Farmin’ on the Square” all summer long - with a special kick-off event on June 7, the annual Green County Fair in July (4-H exhibits, livestock shows and auctions, tractor pull and demo derby), and the Green County Fall Nationals Tractor and Truck Pull in September. And the biggest bash of all - the 100th anniversary of Green County Cheese Days in mid-September. Highlights include three entertainment stages, cheese sampling, dairy farm tours, a cow milking contest, tractor show, Swiss heritage exhibit, yodeling and alphorns, arts and crafts fair, and The Swiss Colony Cheese Days Parade on Sunday. Favorites on the menu: Monroe Optimist’s deep fried cheese curds, and cheesecake-on-a-stick from the bakery at Colony Brands. The National Historic Cheesemaking Center is the place to discover the origins of our cheese industry. What makes this restored railroad depot the perfect place for honoring the cheese heritage of Green County? While in operation, the freight room of the depot had temporarily housed millions of pounds of Green County cheese awaiting transport by train to take it to all corners of the United States. The railroad industry was integral in making Monroe and Green County famous as Swiss Cheese Capital of the USA. Also on site, the Imobersteg Farmstead Cheese Factory, circa late 1800’s. Back in the day, the Imobersteg Family made Brick, Limburger and Swiss cheese - one kettle at a time - using the milk from their own herd. Friendly volunteers, many of whom with connections to the cheesemaking and dairy farming industries, provide guided tours and also keep the racks stocked with free visitor guides, and area maps. The center is also an outlet for trail passes. Stop in during the center’s annual old time cheesemaking demonstration Demonstrating Cheese Grading on June 14.

There’s a large glass window observation hall right down the middle of the factory and you can watch a video to learn about the process. Stop in the morning to see workers in action - filling vats and turning cheese to drain the whey. Swiss native Tony Zgraggen manages the Alp and Dell Cheese Store and will be happy to answer questions. If you listen carefully, you might hear him yodeling in the back room! Tony stocks a huge variety of local and imported cheese. The factory’s signature variety is Grand Cru Gruyere - an Alpine-style classic crafted in copper vats. The gift shop has "Little Cheeseman" fondue pots, fun and cheesy items, a great selection of wine, and one-of-a-kind specials in the cheese

bargain bin. Bus group tours are also welcome – please call ahead. Alp and Dell also recently added an outlet location in Paoli, just south of Madison. Maple Leaf Cheese Outlet is located in Juda, just minutes east of Monroe. Resident cheesemonger Gordy Bergemann and his daughter Shauna offer over 100 different varieties of cheese. Gordy’s grandson Ayden “Little Cheeseman” Bergemann was a winner in the “Cheese Sandwich Contest for Kids” at the 2012 Green County Cheese Days festival. His entry, “Glazed Apple Delight,” featured Maple Leaf’s Apple Harvest Cheddar cheese - garnished with apple slices and peanut butter - served up on a glazed donut. You won’t find 9

donuts at Maple Leaf, but you will find cheese, deli meats, sausages, hand-dipped ice cream, hot olives, and squeaky cheese curds. Beer, the perfect companion to cheese, has been made in Monroe since before Wisconsin became a state. Learn how it’s brewed at Minhas Craft Brewery, second oldest in the nation. Back in days of Prohibition, the brewery (then known as Blumer Brewery) produced a “near beer” called Golden Glow. Around this same time, owner Fred Blumer was kidnapped at gunpoint, with his family paying a negotiated amount for Lazy Mutt Lounge his safe return. Rumors swirled that bootleggers were involved. A short film on the

Blumer Kidnapping debuts at the brewery this year. Brands produced include Huber, Mountain Creek, Rhinelander, and Boxer Ice, a Canadian-style lager. The brewery also makes the popular line of Blumer’s sodas - including root beer, blueberry cream, and orange cream. After seeing the raw ingredients and various aspects of the brewing process, guests enjoy sampling in the tasting room and shopping in the brand new visitor center opening this year. The brewery is also home the “World of Beer Memorabilia” on permanent exhibit courtesy of Herb and Helen Haydock. Just across the street is the newest venture of the Minhas Family - Monroe’s very own distillery! The Minhas Micro Distillery produces Whiskey, Rum, Horchata, Gin, Tequila, Irish Cream, Vodka, and more, PLUS brand new - Blumer's Original Moonshine and Apple Pie Moonshine. Explore this historic gem using the self-guided tour brochure. There's a great photo opportunity in the courtroom (here's a hint: you be the judge). One of the most memorable landmarks on the Square in downtown Monroe is Baumgartner’s Cheese Store & Tavern. Wisconsin’s oldest cheese store has remained virtually unchanged since being established in 1931. Brothers and co-owners Chris and Tyler offer local cheese and brews, imported cheese, specialty foods, and a great atmosphere. Originally a cheesemaker’s supply store, the locale is famous for Limburger cheese sandwiches. On Sundays in summer, the menu expands to include “good eats” from the grill. Sidewalk dining is available. The menu at Suisse Haus offers a variety of sandwich options, soups, wrap specials, and yummy appetizers – including deep fried cheese curds. The burgers are big, juicy, and hand-pattied. Homemade pizza is also an evening option - try Rich’s special (the works) or their specialty pizza of the month (pies from the past: Rueben, Philly Cheesesteak, BBQ Chicken). For a fine dining experience brimming with Swiss pride, visit Turner Hall/Ratskeller Restaurant. The menu includes a variety of Swiss and American selections; reservations are recommended for the popular Friday Night Fish Fry. Originally established in 1868 by Swiss immigrants, the authentic Emmentaler style chalet features an Old World Rathskeller Restaurant, Grand Hall, and bowling lanes. The interior is full of authentic Swiss folk art, paintings, and displays. Sunday afternoons often feature live music on the area’s best dance floor. For another look at the heritage of the area, visit Green County Historical Society Museum and adjacent one-room schoolhouse. The museum features vintage clothing, a dentist’s office replica, military artifacts, and local brewery and cheesemaking history. 13

If all the cornfields in the county were used to create a huge maze, you’d never find your way out, but the path would likely lead to Schultz’s Inter-State Ag, Inc. A highlight for ATV fans is the Cheese Country Trail – the only ATV trail in southern Wisconsin. Monroe provides routes in the city, allowing trail users to stay on their rigs to get to the Green County Fairgrounds (camping is available), motels, and some restaurants and fuel stops. Follow the trail west from Monroe to Browntown Cadiz Springs State Recreation Area. The park covers 600 acres, has two lakes perfect for recreational fishing, and nature trails with interpretive signage. A shelter house is nearby the beach area, and a handicap accessible boat launch is available. The Friends of Cadiz Springs is an advocacy group of volunteers who promote the park and host events. Outdoor areas in Monroe include Recreation Park (aquatic center, kiddie pool, playground); Twining Park (playground, picnic shelters, tennis courts, disc golf); and Honey Creek Skate Park (ramps and jumps for roller bladers and skaters).

Bicyclists, hikers, and snowmobilers enjoy the Badger State Trail - which offers a bike route from the new trail head at Twining Park to downtown Monroe. If festivals, fondue, and ethnic flavors sound like your kind of fun, then New Glarus is your destination! Officially designated as “America’s Little Switzerland,” the entire village embraces Old World Swiss customs, architecture, language, and traditions.

Foodies rejoice! Other than Switzerland itself, there’s no better place than New Glarus for authentic Swiss cuisine - with many area restaurants offering traditional dishes steeped in local flavor - like roesti potatoes, cheese fondue, and Schublig sausage. You’ll also enjoy sausages and breads made with recipes handed down Chef Roland at New Glarus Hotel through the generations, homemade fudge and toffee, cheeses created with the milk from a herd of nearby Brown Swiss cows and Wisconsin fruit wines. Beer lovers recognize New Glarus as the home of an award-winning brewery destination. New Glarus Brewing Company was established in 1993 and rapidly gained fame with their signature brew - Spotted Cow. Since that time, the brewery has outgrown its original location the Riverside Plant - which continues to be used for production of fruit beers like Raspberry Tart and Belgian Red. An aging cave has also been added at the Riverside location. Last summer Brew Master Dan Carey developed a new flavored fruit ale called Strawberry Rhubarb. The rhubarb was locally sourced by area residents who brought their tart stalks to the Polka Fest in June - walking away with beer tokens for their willingness to sacrifice dreams of rhubarb pie for the greater cause. (Side note: in the event of a pie shortage, this ale pairs nicely with vanilla ice cream.) Soon after moving to their new larger facility Rhubarb for Beer across from New Glarus Woods State Park, owners Deb and Dan Carey added a giant warehouse, and the building has undergone several expansions to add laboratory, production, and gift shop space. The courtyard area has also been expanded to include a giant outdoor fireplace, patio areas, a re-created “ruins” built into the hillside, short walking paths and fun photo opportunities. The brewery offers a tasting room, gift shop with apparel and other fun stuff, and self-guided tours. For an insider’s view, make reservations in advance for the popular “hard hat” tours on Friday afternoons. Before leaving, stop in at the “Beer Depot” to load up your vehicle with a variety of lagers, ales, and pilsners. Remember, New Glarus beer is sold “only in Wisconsin,” so the only way to enjoy it elsewhere is by stocking up when you visit or depending on the kindness of Wisconsin friends. Unless of course, you just happen to live in the White House - and in that case the brewery owners might be kind enough to make a personal delivery. When company Tap Room president and founder Deb Carey was invited to the nation’s capital in 2012 to weigh in on job growth in a committee meeting with President Obama, she traded some New Glarus beers for the president’s own home brews.

New Glarus offers hometown fun with festivals for every season - some honoring Swiss heritage, others with music and dancing, and all with delicious food on the menu. Don’t miss BBC! Held on the Saturday of Polkafest in June, BBC offers a trifecta of popular tastes Beer, Bacon, and Cheese. Cheese and beer are longtime staples in Green County, and bacon has become one of the trendiest foods around - finding its way into everything from ice cream sundaes to bon bons. Creativity knows no bounds - bacon jam burgers, cheese and bacon pie, bacon fudge, and the ultimate cheesy-salty carb-licious treat: bacon mac-ncheese. Stroll the downtown area and enjoy tastes from various booths - craft brewers, cheese artisans, and masters of cured meats. Dance off those extra calories in the Polkafest Tent - free admission and live music all weekend.

At the annual Wilhelm Tell Festival (Labor Day weekend) you’ll see colorful costumed dancers, live goats and horses, and the famous bow used to “shoot” an arrow through an apple perched on top of a young boy’s head - all set in the scenic backdrop of an outdoor wooded glen. The annual juried Art in the Park show takes place on Sunday downtown in Village Park. The New Glarus Fire Department celebrates their anniversary with Firefest at the start of August. Highlights include firefighter water fights, fire truck rides, bucket brigade competitions, kids’ water fights, a steak-fry featuring aged beef from Hoesly’s Meats, and live music with Cherry Pie. You’ll often see members of the fire department pulling their original ladder cart as they make appearances in area parades. When they pause along the route, you’ll know they’re getting ready for their famous ladder climb. For traditional Swiss entertainment in a pretty-as-a-picture setting, it’s the annual Volksfest (Swiss Independence Day) on the first Sunday of August. Entertainment includes choral folklore music, yodeling, flag throwing, thalerschwingen, alphorn playing, and accordion music. Join the crowds at Oktoberfest, held annually the last weekend in September. This epic party kicks in on Friday evening with the ceremonial tapping of the Oktoberfest

beer keg, led by Dan and Deb Carey of New Glarus Brewing Company. There will be live bands, horse drawn wagon rides, and fondue cooked in the giant fondue pot by Mike Nevil, chef at Chalet Landhaus in New Glarus, and Bruce Workman, Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker at Edelweiss Creamery in Monticello. You’ll also enjoy Taste of New Glarus (late June), bringing restaurants to the streets with sidewalk cafes offering tastes of their favorite specialties, as well as car shows, tractor shows, and holiday events. New Glarus also serves as headquarters for the Sugar River Trail, where bicyclists can begin their 23-mile journey at the restored depot. New Glarus Woods State Park

Bike the Back Roads - some of the best biking in the Midwest with 279 miles of well-maintained paved county trunk roads. In the heart of dairyland, these backroads were originally designed to transport milk from family farms to cheese factories and other dairy processors. So except for the occasional milk truck, or our own version of the “rush hour traffic jam” (a herd of dairy cattle crossing over the road from the pasture to the milking parlor) there is little traffic, causing one visiting cyclist to remark “it is almost like having your own private bike lane!” If you enjoy taking on hills, the west and northwest area of the county will offer a challenge. The southeast corner (Brodhead area) is quite flat, with numerous barn quilts near the Illinois border.

Geocaching - a high-tech outdoor hide-and-seek game enjoyed by millions of players who hunt for millions of caches around the world using GPS coordinates. If you view the map of caches in Green County, you'll notice two nearly solid green lines - representing the Green County Barn Quilt series of caches along the Badger and Sugar River State Trails. This series placed by local geocaching enthusiast Wayne Stemple was recognized as the Wisconsin Geocaching Series of the Month in April 2012.

Badger State Trail – Begins with a southern connection to the Jane Addams Trail at the Illinois border and extends 40 miles north into Dane County, with a link to the Capital City Trail in Madison. Flashlights required for navigation through the Stewart Railroad Tunnel, near Monticello. From the south, the trail passes through Monroe, runs just east of Monticello (where it intersects with the Sugar River Trail), and continues to Belleville. Research your own genealogy with the museum’s collection of obituaries. Stop in for a chat with the knowledgeable volunteers who staff the museum - open year round on Saturdays. Each summer the society assists in hosting an Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing at the restored 1856 GAP Church just west of Albany on Hwy. 59. Albany is small in size but big on community pride and involvement. Residents enjoy book clubs and story times at the Albertson Memorial Library, programs through summer park and rec, and events sponsored by the Albany Chamber of Commerce - including a Village Park Yesteryear’s celebration over Memorial Day weekend. Many activities are centered on initiatives of the K-12 school system. Grants through the Education Foundation are used to promote leadership and programs within the community.

The Village of Albany is nestled along the Sugar River. Originally known as “Campbell’s Ford,” the first residents of the area were Native Americans of the Winnebago tribe who found the soil perfect for gardening and the river ideal for fishing. Later, the river powered saw and grist mills, and was a source of income with the harvest of clams and fresh water mussels. The iridescent linings layering the insides of the shells led to a thriving industry in the manufacture of pearl buttons - thus the designation “Pearl of the Sugar River.” Today, the village boasts a growing residential and business community, all while maintaining the agricultural roots and small town atmosphere that make Sugar River State Trail Albany a special place. The best source for local history is the Albany Historical Society Museum on Water Street. The museum has collections of toys, farm implements, military memorabilia and uniforms, cameras, railroad history, and vintage hats. Children will enjoy seeing the one-room school replica. Learn the lore of some local personalities of the past like Reuben Folsom the wolf hunter, or film actor John Litel who called the village his home back in the 1890’s.

A scenic dam draws fishermen and photographers alike. The best views are from the bridge downtown over the river on Main Street, or from Sugar River Overlook Park - completed in 2011 by the Downtown Revitalization Committee of the Albany Chamber of Commerce. Just upriver, the vantage point from the shaded benches at Library Park offers a stunning panorama of colors during peak leaf season (see page 45). The Little and Big Sugar Rivers join forces just north of the village. Water enthusiasts take advantage of the gentle current for leisurely tubing adventures or kayak and canoe trips on the Sugar River. Wildlife is plentiful and varied along the way. Several outfitters offer tube and canoe rentals and shuttle service. Nature lovers should visit the nearby 62-acre Muralt Bluff Prairie, a glacial drift dry-mesic prairie replete with native grasses and wildflowers. Throughout summer, goldenrods and blazing stars attract butterflies. Grassland birds are common. Take Hwy. 59 west (toward Monroe) for about 2 miles, then north and west on County F for just less than two miles to an access lane and parking lot south of the road. Look for the State Natural Area sign. Public hunting is allowed. Bicycling enthusiasts will enjoy the Sugar River State Trail - leading through farmlands, woods, rolling hills, scenic meadows, remnant prairies and glacial topography. The trail is part of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, which makes its way for more than 1,000 miles throughout Wisconsin. To the north, the trail travels alongside the Sugar River, 43

the trail, offers a trailside stop with restrooms, water and parking, and quick access to downtown.

Owner Cathy Cryor Burgweger restored it to the original period (you’ll see rings in the dining room wall where horses were tethered), and added space for a restaurant and bar, as well as an upstairs dining room ideal for private parties and English High Teas. Cathy takes great pride in using ingredients and foods sourced from local farms and producers. She grows her own fresh greens and seasonal herbs, onsite, in the raisedbed kitchen garden just outside the restaurant. On the menu you’ll find innovative wraps, tasty soups, hearty sandwiches, and delectable desserts.

From the intimate dining room to the welcoming guest rooms above, Albany House Bed & Breakfast is a great getaway. Brodhead’s downtown “Exchange Square” provides the setting for various festivals and events. At the popular Covered Bridge Days in August, visitors shop the sidewalk sales and enjoy live music and a parade. Of special interest to tractor enthusiasts are the antique tractor show and old-time threshing demonstrations on the southeast side of the city. The Wildflower Festival, held during Covered Bridge Days weekend, is a juried show in the park featuring artisan creations ranging from fused glass, to original watercolors, to wire and bead jewelry. Brodhead hosts Autumnfest in fall with hay wagon rides, a chili contest, farmer’s market, arts and crafts, music, and plenty of family fun. At the annual Fire & Ice Festival in early December, chainsaw carver Zoli trades blocks of wood for blocks of ice to create sculptures downtown. There are carriage rides, madrigal singers, and an appearance by Santa. Fire circles are available for roasting marshmallows, and the evening finishes with a lighted holiday parade.

Sugar Maple Emu Farm raises all of the emus for the meat and oil products that are sold on the farm and at local stores. We invite you to experience one of the largest outdoor art installations in Wisconsin! Green County is home to 136 barn quilts â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a project combining the warmth and expression of quilts along with rural architecture and heritage. At first glance it's all about the artistry of the quilt blocks - the pattern, color, and design. But then you take notice of the barns and their profiles against the topography of the surrounding fields. Red barns, white, yellow, and even turquoise. Some are "working barns" - busy with the rhythm of farm chores and milking cows at daybreak and dusk. Some barns are freshly painted with bright metal roofs on top and newly chinked foundations. Others are "retired" barns - weathered, worn, and worthy of admiration standing the test of time throughout the seasons and the years. At the center of this guide is a pull-out map to plot out your own self-guided tour on roads less traveled. Thousands of bolts of fabric are arranged by hue at Patches and Petals in Belleville. Quilts line the walls and hang from the second floor balcony. At the heart of Green County is Monticello, a village small in size but big on scenic beauty with Lake Montesian and the Montesian Gardens providing a colorful and welcoming panorama.

Lake Montesian beckons with a footbridge leading to a small island, and a handicap-accessible fishing pier. In mid to late May, the lake is accented with shades of pink when dozens of apple trees lining the banks burst into bloom. On lazy summer afternoons you’ll see kayaks in the water and parents teaching kids to fish along the shore. Since it is a fresh water lake, you might be surprised to see a “whale” spouting near the bridge.

Montesian Gardens, a community garden planned and maintained by volunteers, offers a colorful Montesian Gardens array of blooms for each season. American flags line the garden paths during Monticello’s Homecoming weekend, and a giant nativity scene is illuminated during the Christmas season. Visitors are welcome to stop at any time to walk the paths, relax on the benches, and enjoy the scenic view from the gazebo. The veteran’s memorial was added to the gardens in 2012.

Adjacent to the gardens is Community Park - the setting for various events throughout the year. If homemade pie and fireworks sound like a winning weekend combination, visit for Monticello’s Homecoming festivities in July. This hometown celebration is rounded out with a fish boil, live music, talent show, parade, motorcycle poker run, volleyball and softball tournaments, and a highly competitive tug-of-war tournament. Homecoming is sponsored by the Monticello Community Club, with many local service clubs and organizations setting up food booths in the park. Monticello holds the designation as official crossroads of two trails - the Sugar River State Trail and the Badger State Trail. Both are ideal for bicycling in warmer months, hiking year round, and snowmobiling in winter. There is a rest stop at a restored railroad site on the east edge of the village. Bring a flashlight to navigate your way through the darkest trail tunnel in Wisconsin - the Stewart Tunnel (on the Badger Trail), just north of Monticello. Due to a slight overall curve, you literally cannot see Stewart Tunnel

One of Wisconsin’s most historic cheesemaking facilities is just outside Monticello. Silver Lewis Cooperative dates back to 1897, when the neighboring Silver and Lewis families established the business. Milk from a nearby farm owned by the Silver Family is still used to this day. Josh and Carla Erickson and family produce award-winning flavored Farmers cheese (including Caraway, Smoked Habanero, or Horseradish and Chive) along with Muenster, Brick, and Havarti. Creamy, mellow Havarti gets a flavor kick with black pepper, or spicy olives. Visitors often include bicyclists who take back roads from the nearby Sugar River Trail. Edelweiss Creamery is a small artisan cheese factory combining state-of-the-art technology with the traditional methods of cheesemaking. There has been a cheese factory at the Edelweiss site since 1873, and as a result - the cheese brings you back to a time when flavor was king! A traditional copper-lined vat was imported from Switzerland to craft the factory’s flagship cheese, Edelweiss Emmentaler - a cheese requiring twice-weekly washing as it ages for six months. Edelweiss Creamery’s cheese is crafted by Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker Bruce Workman, with Wisconsin being the only state that requires a licensed cheesemaker to monitor every pound of cheese that is produced. The Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker Program is a rigorous 3-year course. As the only program of its kind outside of Europe, it ensures that the old-world standards of quality and craftsmanship continue in producing the finest cheeses right here in Wisconsin. Workman already holds certifications in Gruyere, Baby Swiss, Butterkase, Havarti, Raclette, Emmental, Specialty Swiss, Brick and Muenster, and is adding Gouda and Cheddar to his list this year. He and his wife Kathy operate a cheese store in nearby Verona, where you’ll find cheese made at the plant in Monticello, as well popular varieties produced by respected fellow cheesemakers throughout the state. The store also offers cheese pairings and tastings, cheese accessories, and gifts.
