Invertebrates New markets, more profits…. The key to cashing in on new markets is to spot them early and engage with them quickly. Riding that wave of interest as an early adopter means that you cash in on a market when there is less competition. Of course a new market may not be new at all, it may simply be changing and developing. This is where we are now with invertebrates. Most shops have always had a spider or two, and maybe a millipede or scorpion as well, but we are now seeing an unprecedented interest in all things “invertebrate”. Sales of spiders are still strong, both for the common species such as Chile Rose (although this may be about to become anything but common) and Pink Toe, but also the more unusual and expensive species. Imperial Scorpions still fly out of the door, but there is a growing demand for shops to stock a range of species; Rock Scorpions, Bark Scorpions, Forest Scorpions and so on.

However, the biggest area of growth is with the more unusual species. Supply is keeping up with demand and many species of Stick Insects, Cockroaches, Preying Mantis, Crabs and Snails are all now commonly available.
But, if we had to choose one area to pick above the others, it would have to be the giant beetles. These are now available routinely from the pretty Chafers through to the real giants of the beetle world like Atlas and Goliath Beetles. And these are no longer the aged, legless imports that we have seen in the past, but high quality, healthy specimens and even larvae so that you can grow your own.

If you want to add some heat then you can use the mini low voltage Halogen lighting unit. This neat unit fits into the same aperture as the LED lighting but uses a miniature low voltage halogen bulb to provide both light and heat. It creates a temperature gradient in the habitat from the top to the bottom, ideal for many invertebrates. The same low voltage halogen lighting system is also available in a unit specifically designed to fit in the Lucky Reptile “Herp Haven� range of plastic tanks, ideal for people who want to use this more traditional housing solutions for their bugs.
