Barclays quant trio spins out from nQuant unit Team behind latest bank spinout worked together at Lehman Brothers BY ELANA MARGULIES

A TRIO OF NEW YORKbased quants employed by Barclays is spinning out from nQuant, a systematic proprietary trading group owned by the global bank, HFMWeek has learned. In the latest planned bank spinout, portfolio managers Max Fortin and Olivier Durantel will run investments for the new hedge fund venture, with their current Barclays colleague David Jack designated to take the COO role. The team, which also worked together at Lehman Brothers,

is believed to be launching with the support of Barclays, although it is not known if the bank will provide seeding. Barclays declined to comment. A source said the plan was in its early stages, with the new offering’s name and launch date not yet decided, but added that it will deploy the same strategy used by the team at Barclays and continue to build systematic black box trading models. Other staff members are expected to join the trio leaving nQuant, which has offices in the US, Europe and Asia. The most notable recent quant spinout from a bank saw Peter Muller leave Morgan Stanley and launch PDT Partners last year.
