I’M 13 AND I’VE VISITED 45 COUNTRIES; HERE’S WHAT IT’S TAUGHT ME Imagine waking up to a breathtaking view every day. That’s what it’s like for me when I travel. I’ve been travelling for as long as I can remember. When I was five, my family took me to Peru. And when I was six, we went on a trip around the world. We visited 29 countries that year alone. Every day I learned something new. Before we left on our first trip I was very timid. If we went to the playground I would hide behind my mother’s leg instead of playing with the other kids and I wouldn’t say what I wanted to. During the trip, I realised that if I didn’t talk to others, I wouldn’t make any friends. In time I was telling my family what I wanted to see and do, instead of cruising with what my brother wanted or what my parents wanted. 6 WAYS TO PREPARE YOUR CHILD FOR A TRIP When getting ready for a trip, we don’t often think about getting the kids prepared, do we? Happy kids make happy parents, so the destination and what you do there is important. Here are 6 practical tips – that don’t take up a lot of time – to ensure the kids are ready. 1. Learn the lingo. A great way to immerse yourself and your child into the local culture is teaching them some key sayings in the local language ahead of time. You will feel such joy (and pride!) when your child says “sawadika” to local hotel staff upon check-in in Thailand or “terima kasih” when someone gives your child a meal in Borneo. WHAT A FAMILY TRIP TO MOROCCO IS REALLY LIKE, ACCORDING TO TWO KIDS Last year, with their parents and two other families, Rosa (12) and Jack (14) travelled on Intrepid’s 8-day Morocco Family Holiday. What did they have to say about it? What was it like travelling with other kids? Rosa: Well, it was great fun travelling with other kids because they became like best friends. We would sit together on the bus, play together in the pool, and talk about the same things. I enjoyed hanging out with my parents too.

Jack: It was much more fun, since we had the same interests and got to share experiences together. But personally the best part was travelling with my sister and my Mum and Dad. At home, they are always in a somewhat stressed mood – it was nice to see them have fun and relax with their new friends. Rosa is much different. things i’ll never forget about my intrepid family holiday in THAILAND By Ammy Hobson (age 11)

Welcome to Intrepid Our small-group style of travel means you’ll stay under the radar, and travel, eat and sleep the local way. You’ll have the unsurpassed knowledge of a local leader,

I was so excited to have an adventure in Thailand with my mum, but I couldn’t imagine what it would be like or how I would survive such a long plane trip. But I did it and it was amazing. Here are some things I will never forget. 1. Bangkok khlong cruise It was quite mesmerising because we saw the local Thai people’s houses going by and it was different than where we live in Melbourne. After a while we found ourselves in a lock where they had to raise the water levels, then we went to see the reclining Buddha – it is quite a sight! 2. Erawan Falls Going to the waterfalls was one reason I wanted to go on this trip. And swimming in the second level is amazing. Warning: Fish alert! They will try to bite your feet and it really tickles. 3. Elephant Nature Park These enormous creatures are very big and very beautiful. We met lots of elephants and their buddies and got to feed some bananas to them. It’s not scary feeding them, you just put it in their trunks.

4. Village Homestay Our hosts didn’t speak any English so we used Google translator. It was fun, even though it didn’t always make sense. In the evening we learned a hilltribe dance and all joined in. The next day we went on a jungle walk where I ate LOTS of sticky rice and sweet potato wrapped in banana leaves. YUM.
