MONEY IN MY POCKET - THE ANT AND THE BUZZER (adapted story from the book “No Poupar Vai o Ganho! Educação Financeira”)

Once upon a time, there was a very hard working Ant. The Ant used to plant carrots, cabbages, potatoes, onions and other kind of food. Then, she used to sell them. Thus, she earned money with which she could buy other kind of food and other things, which were also important, and were sorely, missed, such as milk, fruit, books and she could pay the rent of the house. The Ant had a friend, the Buzzer! She was cheerful and willing but very naughty. She didn’t study and she didn’t like to work. Thus, as she played the guitar all summer and didn’t work, she didn’t earn money… The summer ended. The winter and the cold started. The Ant had sold what she had sown. She bought what she needed and still had 20 euros in her pocket! With the winter the Buzzer started to be worried. She was hungry and cold and she didn’t have money in her pocket. She thought and thought…and said: -

I already know…I’m going to visit the Ant!

There she went. -

Hi Ant, sorry, but you know…I’m starving and with cold. Could you please give me some money?

-

That’s a good joke! – answered the Ant. I worked all the summer while you were singing! If you sang day and night…now you can also dance!

The Buzzer was silent because she knew the Ant was right. She should really have worked so she could have money to buy food, pay the rent…well, for all she needed. But as she knew that the Ant had money, she told her:

- My dear friend Ant, I’m going to make you a request. I’m very upset and worried because I have no money. I know you are my friend and you won’t say no. Can I borrow 5 euros? I promise in 30 days I will refund you with interest and the capital sum (the amount I borrowed)…

The Ant replied: -

OK, I will lend you the money! But you will stay in debt to me. You owe me 5 euros and you must really pay me in 30 days. Debts must be paid. And you are going to sign a paper saying how much you owe and when you will pay me.

The Buzzer had to find a way to earn money to pay the debt and to manage to survive. She thought and thought and thought…and decided to use her talents to win some money. She began by planning a music show. She went to several shops and started looking at the prices. She discovered that guitars were very expensive! Finally she decided to buy the one that seemed the best and not so expensive. The guitar cost 15 euros. The Buzzer didn’t have money in her pocket so she told the shopkeeper that she would pay later. She was very worried so she decided to make a spending plan and write all that she owed and what she had to spend during the month: the debt to the Ant, the guitar, food, books, the rent and the bills of water and electricity. She didn’t include the costs with transportation because she decided she would have to walk to save, since the costs were already too many. Once the Buzzer saw her spending plan, she was scared! She would really have to win a lot of money! There was only one way - to make the show a huge success! She rehearsed, played, sang and prepared herself very well, for the big day. (…) Write your own end… Good luck! Below you will find some plans…

The big day eventually arrived. Buzzer had practised very hard the night before and had sent leaflets to all her friends in the tiny village to let them know about the show. The Bee, the Wasp, the Butterfly, the Earthworm, the Ladybird, the Woodlouse, the Spider, the Centipede, the Millipede and the Moth. She had also stuck notices around the village in case other insects would care to come. At half past six, the Buzzer put away her new guitar, gathered up her tickets and waited for the opening of the concert. She was extremely nervous. Would anybody come? Would it be a success? The Buzzer had just given more notices out. She had been terribly busy all day. The Ladybird was first to arrive. She bought one drink and a small tub of popcorn. The Wasp, the Bee and the Butterfly were the next to turn up. They bought two drinks, a big tub of popcorn, a small tub of popcorn and a packet of crisps. Loads more insects came, even insects that the Buzzer had never even seen before. In total, thirty-five insects came, twenty-seven drinks were bought twenty big tubs of popcorn, fifteen packets of crisps and ten small tubs of popcorn were purchased. “This is more than enough money,” the Buzzer thought. “I’ve made over seventy Euro.” The concert began. The Buzzer started to play some songs that she had practised. She was so nervous that she didn’t play very loud to begin with. Half way through her first song , however, she gradually became more confident and by the end of the show, the insects were standing up and clapping to the beat of the music. When the concert finally ended, the Buzzer felt so happy and relieved that she’d had the confidence and talent to play the guitar. She was also now quite tired, so it didn’t take her long to fall asleep that night. The next day she gave the shopkeeper fifteen Euro for the guitar and set off to Ant’s house to return her money. “Here is seven Euro Ant I hope it’s enough,” said the Buzzer to the Ant. “Thanks Buzzer. So are going to work during the summer this year?” questioned the Ant. “Oh I have already made plans,” replied the Buzzer. “Since my concert was such great success I think I’ll hold a concert every summer.” “Good for you,” exclaimed the Ant. So the two good friends talked together about how much money was left in their pockets.

Soon the big day came and Buzzer was so excited, so Buzzer decided to practise extra hard so that he wouldn’t let the ant or the ladybird in the music shop down so that he would give the money back in time. Then one day Buzzer decided to start putting his posters up and start to tell everybody about the concert that was going to be performed. Once the Buzzer had all his tickets sold he decided to organise some treats, drinks and much they would have to pay to get in. Then the Buzzer decided that the drinks and the treats would cost ninety five cense each and to get into the concert they would have to pay six pounds pure kid and eight pounds pure adult. Then he would put a we box out for funds just save a we bit extra. So that with the funds box and the extra from his concert he would hopefully have enough to buy electricity, food, books and the rent of the house Once the big day had come and all the mini beasts were in, Buzzer then became a little bit nervous but then he realised that it couldn’t be much different than playing normally when nobody was watching. Then when it was time to go out and he was playing in front of the audience he felt much more relaxed and he felt happy to be playing. Then when he had finished his song that he was playing and saw that everyone was having fun he decided to say “For these last few songs I want you to sing with me,” so everyone was happy to sing along. When the concert was over he thanked all the mini beasts for coming and then everybody because it was quite late and everybody was tired. Buzzer decided that he would count all his money and get the money ready that he owed the ladybird and the ant and he was so happy that he had enough money for the food, rent of the house, water, Electricity and the purchase of the books. The Buzzer decided to go straight to the ant and the ladybird in the music shop. Once the Buzzer had paid them back he decided to go and pay the rent of the house, he then decided to go and buy some food and water to eat and drink. Once the Buzzer had done everything he had to do he then realised that you should work to earn money and not to spend it all at once, so then the next summer instead of just playing music he would try to earn some money just like the ant did so that he would be able to pay the rent of the house, the food, the water, electricity and the purchase of books

The big Finale had finally come. Ten minutes to show-time. Buzzer was tense but Ant came to wish Buzzer good luck and then went to get his front row seat. It was five minutes to show-time and the Arena where she was singing at was SOLD-OUT .The tickets only cost €5 so no wonder. The loudspeaker announced “Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, Please Welcome Buzzer!!!” The crowd clapped and cheered as Buzzer came out onto the stage. She started singing and in one minute fifty seconds she had finished. The loudspeaker then said “That deserves a round of applause”. Buzzer waved and walked off. Eventually when everyone had gone home Buzzer went to check how much she had raised on food and drink, programmes and guides and on tickets. Altogether she had raised €85. Then she went home and typed in her name on her laptop and she had 765 hits on You Tube and then went to bed. The next morning she went to Ant and paid €6 in 8 days out of 30 days, paid €16 for the guitar, she paided for her food , rent of the house , books , electricity and water bill. The moral is earn what you get and don’t be in debt like Buzzer.

Finally, the big day came. Buzzer was so excited. So she jumped up out of her bed and ate her breakfast. When she was finished, she lifted up her guitar and sat down on a chair. She set her guitar down on her knee and started to practise one last time before she left. After a couple of hours, Buzzer made her way to where the concert was being held. At the show, Buzzer’s friends were selling some tickets. They were €3.00 each. They were also selling snacks and drinks. They were €0.50. They were selling cds too which were €1.00. Buzzer thought that she’d get lots of money. So soon Buzzer made her way backstage. She peeped through the curtains and she could she such a big crowd. There were Ladybirds, Butterflies, Woodlice, Earthworms, Ants, Centipedes, Spiders, Bees and Snails. After a while, the curtains were raised. Buzzer walked onto the stage with her guitar. Then she welcomed everybody and thanked them all very much for coming to listen and watch her perform. Then she took a deep breath and started to play her guitar. Then she started to sing as well. The crowd absolutely loved the performance. They thought it was amazing. They clapped and cheered the whole way though it. Buzzer enjoyed it very much too. At the end, Buzzer was amazed at how much cheering was going on. She was so proud of herself. Then she ran backstage and set her guitar down. Then she ran over to her friends and started to talk to them. She said that it was amazing standing up on a big stage and everyone watching you sing and play a guitar. After quite a long time, Buzzer started to feel tired. She wanted to go home and find out how much money she had collected up. So she lifted up her guitar and put all the money that she had collected into a little tin box. Then she waved bye bye to her friends and travelled home. On her way home she started to shake the little tin box. She wondered how much money she had collected at the concert but it was too hard. She could not think. At last she reached her house. She quickly unlocked the door and ran in. She sat down on a chair and opened up the little tin box. Then Buzzer started to count up the money, €1.00, €10.00, €20.00, €54.50! She collected up €54.50! Buzzer was so amazed! She couldn’t believe what she was seeing! She now had enough money to pay everybody that needed paid. So, straight away she paid every body that he had to pay. By that night, Buzzer was really tired. What a long day she had. Now Buzzer knows that she should do some work and earn some money

rather than play her guitar all the time.

The Buzzer was preparing himself for the big day by setting out seats, organising fee’s for entering for the show, making 5 banjo’s, water for the guests and food, cups for drinks, plates for food. “All that work was tiring!” the Buzzer thought. “Now I have to practice hard, “La la la la la la la la la la la la la la!” Then the Ant arrived, “Do you want me to make invites for the concert?” She asked Buzzer “Oh yes please, that would be VERY kind of you to do that!” Buzzer replied. “I will get some sheets of paper” said Ant. So she went to get paper and came back with 30 sheets of paper and started to write, Tuesday 24th July 2008 3 Leaf Branch Drumanor Play Park BT85 LEAF5 Dear Ladybird, I am writing this letter to tell you that I am holding a concert at my place this Saturday night. You are very welcome to come and also perform if you like as I have got 5 banjo’s made out of strings and sauce pans! Please invite more insects if you can. The starting time is 6:00pm. To get in it is €10 and also to perform. It would be a pleasure to have you there! Best Wishes, Buzzer  Ladybird’s reply, Thursday 26th July 2008 12 Big tree Trunk Drumanor Forest BT84 TREE8 Dear Buzzer, Thank you for your lovely letter you sent me on Tuesday, I would be delighted to come to your show this Saturday. I will not be performing (as I will only make a fool out of myself!) But I’ve been talking to a couple of friends of mine yesterday and they said that they would love to come and perform! So I will see you there! Best regards, Ladybird xx “Thank you so much for writing all those letters!” Buzzer exclaimed “No problem, anytime!” answered Ant. The Big day arrived and Buzzer was busy getting food and drinks sorted out, by the time he was finished was 4pm, the show started at 6pm but he thought insects might arrive at 5pm so he got his suit and tie on and getting his antennae’s spiked up! Soon insects were barging in giving their €10 and some €20 for performing. There were 30 insects there altogether. Everyone sat down and started to eat their leaves and drink their water impatiently. The show started and Buzzer went up on stage and started to sing and play his guitar. EVERYONE started to applause and then started to throw money, notes! There was so much money that Earthworm through his hat to collect all the money. Next up was Woodlouse tap dancing and Butterfly singing rock Music and it was the perfect harmony! Then it was Caterpillar singing a sweet song. It was beautiful. Then Spider sang the ‘Lazy Song’ by ‘Bruno Mars’! The show was nearly over (everyone thought!) until Ant came up and said a speech, which goes like this, “Hello insects of Drumanor, I would like you all to give a BIG hand to our Star Of The Show, Mr Buzzer!!! (Everyone clapps) He was just doing this all to earn some money, to pay the rent, water, food, electricity, books, a guitar and to pay me too! (Insects laughed and some cried!) Thank you everyone for coming!” “Thank you Ant!” Thanked Buzzer. “and Union J, District 3, One Direction, JLS, MK1,, The Saturdays, Girls Allowed, Little Mix and the wanted will be here at 7pm, performing LIVE for you to sing and dance along to, €1 per autograph. Everyone waited in a perfectly straight line waiting for the bands to come. They arrived and took every single autograph! Buzzer made a fortune out of this! Soon it was time for home. “Bye!” Buzzer shouted to everybody. Out of this he made €472! Of course he had to take away €85 for all the bills he had to pay for so now altogether Buzzer has- €472- €85 = €387. WOW! That is a lot of money just for a small concert to €387! Now Buzzer could pay the Ant and all his other bills. Buzzer had learnt that in future that he had to work to earn money, live life and pay for what you need. Ant was proud of Buzzer, “Now hopefully he is going to do things right from now on!” Ant hoped. Buzzer and Ant lived happily ever after.
