NI Theme Park Trip

Page 1

Key Stage 2, 3 and 4

Planning a trip to a theme park Background The activities here are designed to help pupils consider the costs of a fun day out with family or friends and to devise a plan so as to stick within a reasonable budget.

Learning outcomes By the end of this lesson pupils will have the ability to: • identify the full range of costs associated with a day trip to a theme park • consider best value for money • prioritise spending choices • devise a savings plan to afford an outing

Materials needed • Mind map, such as sample attached. • Set of spending cards with prices. • Budget planner.

Extra advice Website research will make the activities more interesting and relevant. However, sufficient materials are supplied for self-contained exercise.

Tasks 1 Start with the mind map activity to explore the full range of costs associated with a day trip to a theme park. 2 Use cards to plan a Day Trip for a Family or Group of 4 people. Provide ‘Economy Package’, ‘Budget Package - £120 for whole day’ and ‘Luxury Package’. • ‘Economy Package’ includes the bare necessities for a fun day out and might include ideas such as packed lunch from home. • ‘Budget Packet’ means that all costs must not exceed a specific limit, e.g., £120. • ‘Luxury Package’ packs maximum fun for the day (without costing an exorbitant amount!) 3 Pupils to consider a savings plan so that they can afford a trip to a theme park during the summer holidays: Suppose you get £3 (or £5) per week in pocket money. As a result, your parents want you to pay your own way for the day to the theme park. Use budgeting planning sheet to make a savings plan in preparation for the day out. Suppose you have siz weeks to prepare.

Review Consider the pros and cons of a one-time ‘Luxury Package’ VS. an ‘Economy Package’.

Variations If access to Internet is possible, pupils could visit the website of a local or favourite theme park and use up-to-date price information to plan an actual day out with friends during the summer holidays (e.g., trip to Alton Towers: http://www.altontowers.com/ or to Drayton Manor Park: http://www.draytonmanor.co.uk/) The budgeting activities here might be combined with an enterprise activity where pupils work on designing a new theme park ride. There is also scope for a link to a maths activity on probability of winning any money on game machines in the arcade.

On Friday morning Dad woke me up at 0730. We got dressed and had breakfast. We needed to leave at 0815 to go to the train station. On the way there we picked up my best friend Hannah Mitchell as she was going with us. When we got to the train station we got onto the 0830 train. At 0900 we arrived at the theme park. We got our tickets to get in and our ultimate fast track tickets. Then from 0915 until 1215 we went on the rides. My favourite ride was the Big Dipper. For lunch Hannah and I had fish and chips. Mum and Dad had pasta and sauce. We had a soft drink with it. At 1330 we got tickets for the water park and we spent 1hr 45mins on those. At 1515 we went to the Amusement arcades and we where there for ½ and hour. At 1545 we went to get ice-cream, it was lovely. Then we went to the souvenir gift shop and bought a key-ring, some sweets and a bouncy ball each. Mum and Dad bought a book each. Then we went to the t-shirt gift shop and bought a t-shirt each. Hannah and I both got a yellow one with the words ‘ADVENTURE LAND’ written very brightly on them. After that we had to go to the train station to get home. We got on the train at 1700. We arrived home at 1730. We dropped Hannah off at her house and then we went home. Hannah and I were both very tired. Dad said it was a very expensive as it had cost £252 but it was definitely worth the price as we had a great day out.

One day my dad told me we were going to Adventure land at the weekend with mum and Luke. So that Saturday we got up at half seven and got dressed. The next thing we did was eat our breakfast. Then there was a long ten minutes to check we had everything. After that we left the house at twenty past eight. It only took ten minutes to get to the train station. On the train it took half an hour to get to the park door which was just opening and Luke was excited. At five past nine mum got all the tickets. Then five minutes later we went in and Luke mum dad and I went on the biggest roller coaster in the theme park. It was class!!!! A person came off crying. Then we went on the bumping cars and we were the only on them at that time. Then we went on another few rides. We counted and we only had two fast track tickets left. So we went on another roller coaster it was good but not as good as the first. Our last ride was the cyclone it was really fast. Then it was 12 noon time for lunch. For lunch dad and I had fish and chips and mum and Luke had pasta. After lunch we went to the water park. We went on lots of slides. We even went to a wave pool it was good. We went on a slide where you sat in a rubber ring it was good Luke and I crossed each other. Then dad checked his watch and we had to get dried. We had to go to the amusements’ it was ok but it could have been better. At half four we got souvenirs’ and some T-shirts. Then it was time to go home. It did not seem as long but it was half an hour. We were at the train station at twenty five to six. We were home at a quarter to six. What a day

My mum woke me up at a quarter past seven in the morning to go to Adventure Land. I had been allowed to bring one friend and I had chosen Eloise. After getting ready and making sure we had everything we set off to the bus stop. When we got Eloise and her mum where already waiting for us. We got on the bus that would bring us to Adventure land. Though the bus trip took one hour but it only seemed like a few minutes because we were talking that much. At the end of the trip we paid ÂŁ28. It was 9.00am. We queued for half an hour to get into the park. We got a map so we could find our way around. We went on lots of rides and we even went on one twice .At a quarter past one we had lunch it was lovely. At a quarter to two we went to the arcade and we played lots of games. When our fifteen minutes were up we brought all our prize tickets to the desk and we had enough to get a badminton set each! We went on more rides. The spinner, Crash mountain, Air and loads more. We went on the rides until we only had fifteen minutes left. We decided to spend those in the gift shop where we bought two key-rings that cost six pounds. Then we got on the bus and went home.

One Saturday I woke up early at seven o`clock and dad said that he had a big surprise for us. He said that we were going to adventure land but we needed to hurry up. We got up and got ready for the bus. We had to bring a picnic for our lunch because we thought it would be the cheapest. Then we left the house to walk to the bus station. It only took us five minutes to get to the bus station and then we were on the bus for 8 o`clock. At nine o`clock I arrived at the park and I took 1 hour 5 mins to see what rides I wanted to go on. When we all got our tickets we stated to queue up for all the rides. The first ride we went on was called the drop. It was really scary because it brought you up to the top of a really high ledge and then it dropped you into the water below. Mum and dad started to get hungry so we stopped to have our picnic. Mum had got chicken sandwiches with some sweets. We had to eat on the grass because their was no other place to eat. When we had eaten we went to the shop to buy 2 key rings which cost £6. We choose not to go on any rides because we had just eaten so me and Jonathon went to the arcade. The arcade cost £6 and we only had a hour and a half before the bus left. It was half five by the time we got home. Altogether we only spent £76 for a good day away.

One morning my brother William woke up and decided to take me my brother Philip and Williams girlfriend Amy to Adventure Land . He asked my parents if that was okay, so my parents woke me at 07:30 to get up and get ready to goto Adventure Land. When we all had breakfast we left the house and were walking towards the train station . So we were in the train for half an hour. When we got off the train we went to the water park . Me and Philip went on the Big Swirl and when we were at the bottom we got absolutely drenched but luckily it was a very hot day so we all dried off quick enough. We went on the Big Splash where it swings you upside down and when it comes back down it goes in a circle and the water comes up and hits you in the face and your feet go in the water and they get drenched . Then we stayed out for a while longer and when we came out you could ring the clothes out but then half an hour an hour they were soon dried out. We had an unlimated fast track ticket so we could go on rides and jump to the front of the queue. We went on the big wheel which was the highest wheel in Nothern Ireland . Me, Amy, William and Philip were at the very top of The Big Wheel when it stopped it wouldn’t move and it started shaking and jerking . So when we got out (we had to climb down a ladder) we didn’t go on any other rides. Then we went to visit some shops and we bought 4 T-shirts and 4 souvenirs. When we had bought stuff we went and got food . We all got a soft drink and Me and Amy got Pasta William and Philip got fish and chips and we all ate ice creams too . Then we went back and got onto the train at 17:15 and we walked home and got there at 17:45. That was the Luxury trip out .

Primary 7 were given an assignment – to plan a trip to a theme park and to cost how much they would spend. There were 3 plans to be made; 1. An ‘Economy’ trip, which would be as cheap as possible, but enjoyable all the same; 2. A ‘Budget’ trip, where the total amount spend was not to be more than £120; 3. A ‘Luxury’ trip, where money was not limited.

They were originally split into 4 groups to do this activity, and experience planning for each of the options. This provided an opportunity for discussion and to recognise the problems presented by the challenge (eg the price had to include meals for all four people / the cost of the bus was for the family not each person etc.) Then they were put into 3 groups, with each having a focus on a particular trip option – Economy, Budget or Luxury. For each option they had to produce a Financial Plan which outlined costs for each item under the headings of;  Transport  Admission  Food  Activities  Other costs The total bill had to be calculated and had to fit the option it was for. The groups then planned an Itinerary, to reflect what they would do at the park. This was then used as a basis for a short written article about their day in Adventure Land. They word processed their work, so that they had a record of their planning, their expenditure and an idea of how they may have spent their day.
