STUDENTS VISITED SUPERMARKETS and MADE SOME INTERVIEWS Students were able to: know what money is and understand the exchange of money; Know about other forms of money; Discuss how spending money and our satisfaction from the purchase can vary; Assess best buys in a variety of circumstances; Recognize the coins and notes that we use; Understand the exchange of coins and notes for goods; Talk about things that they may want to spend their money on; Practice buying and selling at the class shop – role-play.

Teaching financial education to children in the Kindergarten is more effective when the whole family is involved! So, we asked some parents to collaborate with us in a visit to a supermarket in Cinfães. Our Kindergarten is situated in a small village, 2 Km far from Cinfães. There are no public transports so parents’ collaboration is grateful in all our projects. Children had the opportunity to contact with essential goods and those which are not so essential.
With their parents, children were able to select and do the weekly shopping. They paid and realized that to purchase goods we need money. They were also able to understand that a family needs a budget! They had also the opportunity to see a cash point machine and a credit card…
This visit to the supermarket was very important for children and parents! They were able to understand some financial issues and how to set priorities, evaluate some costs and understand the benefits of consumption choices.

Children were also able to work with money in the kindergarten where they have a grocery and can buy and sell products! They usually play with the money they draw!

Children visited a supermarket. This activity was planned according to the “Week of Reading”, that happened from the 12th to the 16th of March 2012. Parents participated on many ways: they told a story; spoke about a job; taught children doing cakes, a game, a toy, among other things. First, we informed children that we were going to have the visit of a parent, who is a baker, to teach them how to make a pizza. We had to buy the ingredients, so we went to the supermarket “Líder Marché”. We divided children in two groups of ten each. One of the groups made a list (with pictures) with all the ingredients and kept money for the shopping in a pocket money. The other group spoke about what they would need and kept the money in a wallet in the back pocket of their trousers. In the supermarket, the first group bought only products with a cheap price, with a “white label”. The second group bought the same products but more expensive, juice, chips, chocolate and gums. We ended our visit with a little conversation with the owner so children were able to make some questions. When we arrived to the kindergarten, we spoke about the prices, about the necessity of buying only the necessary products. We also made a role-play in the kindergarten, representing the visit to the theatre.

The second group bought essential and not essential goods and paid 20.99 euros.
Interview to the owner of the Lider Marché Children asked some questions and were able to know that people only buy what they need and they buy products with a “white label”. The owner also explained that people are doing their shopping for the whole month and not weekly. She also said that children still ask parents to buy a lot of goodies.

We know you live in the center of Cinfães and you need to come and go every day from your house to the shop and back. Why?

Well, some years ago, about 17 years, me and my wife were working together in the same business. As the business wasn’t good enough, the owner closed it and we lost our job. This shop was closed because its owner died and we saw an opportunity we couldn’t loose and we caught the chance.

When you started this business you felt difficulties facing your new job?
-
I didn’t feel difficulties in selling the products, in serving the customers. I felt difficulties in the adaptation because it was the first time I was working in a shop. I had never worked in this branch of business.

Do you sell more now or when you started the business?

When I started the business, some years ago, I used to sell more than now.

Which products do you sell more?
-
I sell a few of everything, but mostly alimentary products.

Do you have a day in the week in which you sell more than in the others?

No, I don’t feel this. It’s almost the same every day.

Did you ever sell some sort of products and you didn´t receive the payment?
-
No, never! Fortunately!

Did you ever had an assault to your establishment?
-
Yes, just once, but they didn´t steal anything. The thief or thieves just broke a window to enter.

Besides the grocery, you have a coffee shop next door. Did you start with both businesses?
-
Yes.

Do you feel, in the coffee shop, a decrease of customers, too?

Yes. The costumers don’t come so frequently.

To finish, in your opinion what is the main reason for this decreasing? Why are you selling less than before?

We are facing a very big economic crisis and, at the same time, the small villages are losing people, are facing the problem of desertification. I hope things can be fixed!

In small villages in Cinfães, where there are very few people living, it is worthless to open a small market. Most of these people are old and some of them don’t own a car. Those ones who own a car can travel, especially at the weekend, to the big centers and buy what they need. Daily, there’s a van passing by the village and, stopping here and there, selling bread and some sort of pastry.

These people, besides the bread, they need to buy fresh fruits, vegetables窶ｦ Once a week, there is someone carrying fresh fruits and vegetables.

窶ｦ but above all, they need fish to eat! Twice a week, they can buy fish without leaving the village!

Do you like this job? Do you sell many products in your establishment every day? With the crisis, do people buy more or less products? Which products do you sell more? (essential, such as food, or luxuries, such as perfumes? Do you think people actually buy the cheaper or the more expensive products? Do they distinguish the quality or the price? Does the crisis affect your supermarket? Did you lower prices to sell more? What do you expect for 2012/2013? Do people bring a shopping list when they come to your supermarket?
After the interview, the students bought some products and thanked the availability of the owner to receive them.

INTERVIEW TO THE OWNER How long does this supermarket exist? Answer: 150 years. You can see it on Facebook. Which type of products do you sell? Answer: Food, hygiene products, frozen and coffee. Do you have many customers? Answer: Yes, I do. Do you still have the book of credits? Answer: No. When the big shopping centers appeared we ended that book because many people only used to come to my shop when they didn’t have money. Do you believe that the big supermarkets cause any harm to the small business? Answer: Yes, a lot.
Are there people who still need help to pay? Answer: Yes. There are old people who still don’t recognize the money. Do parents send their children to make small purchases? Answer: Yes.

How much do you earn by day in your supermarket? Answer: I can’t tell you that. Secrecy is the soul of business. Are the products in your supermarket cheaper than in the big supermarkets? Answer: Some of them, others are not.
