INTRODUCTION TO AFRICOLOGY

As told by the founder, Renchia Droganis My life as a metaphysical counsellor, reiki master and body-mind therapist has exposed me to some very special experiences. I used to do self-development mastery sessions for an organisation called leadership through creative education. At ltce, the approach to basic adult education was not only to give disadvantaged south africans an opportunity to read and write, but also to give them a chance to heal past pain and nurture a healthy self-esteem. Our students were underprivileged south africans who had never had any form of education. Their ages ranged from 20 up to 80. It was at one of these sessions with a man in his thirties that i had an ‘aha’ moment. It must be understood that in the work i do, there is no space for judgement; it is simply a case of listening and understanding the experience of the other person. However, in front of me was a very angry man. He joined groups of workers who would challenge the values of the company which employed them. Intimidating co-workers was not an uncommon activity for him and his team. It was a sad and painful story which unfolded before me as i learned about a child of only 6 years of age who was abandoned, left to exist without parents, a home or a place of safety. This was a moment of awakening for me and i remember experiencing a beautiful feeling of forgiveness in my soul. I don’t know what the forgiveness was for. Was it for not understanding what was happening around me, or was it forgiving him for living a life of criminal activity? What i know for sure is that it awakened within me a deep sense of wanting the world to become more aware of human abuse, and to recognise that we all have the ability to empower ourselves. I used to make my own skin care products for my clients, mixing essential oils according to their physical and emotional needs. My own intuitive insights were greatly helpful in establishing what these were. After a counselling session, i would feel even more connected with the body and mind principles which guided me, understanding that our body expresses our inner thoughts and emotions. It makes sense that our skin will also symbolically reflect our self-esteem.

4

INTRODUCTION TO AFRICOLOGY

Isn’t it true that we often purchase a bottle full of self-esteem, in the hope that an external application will change our inner self? Africology, or the study of africa, led to the creation of a brand that would encapsulate the behaviour, experiences and the healing potential of africa. This was a way in which i could express my need to foster human development. I wanted to capture the healing essences of africa, for i do indeed see the journey of africa as a process of healing or becoming whole. It is my intention that africology skin and body products should deliver a message of well-being, not only on a physical but on a spiritual level too. When i do my spa training i always remind the therapists that all beauty shines from within, and i call it the africology radiance. Just as humans need to be compatible with each other in order to have functional relationships, this same principle applies in the selection of ingredients we use in our formulations. There must be a similar interaction. My essential oils are selected for their compatibility with the plants i choose to use. I believe that botanicals and essential oils that are in harmony with each other achieve a functional and synergistic impact on the skin with the result that essential oils shift moods and dissolve stress. I use my intuitive ability to select herbs, plants and oils for my formulations. I enjoy connecting with the essence of plants to re-affirm their readiness to be used. Honouring the spirit of mother earth is a priority in using products in my formulations. What is taken from earth has to be replaced. I also acknowledge that we cannot give back waste water that is polluted with chemicals. So we work hard at banning harmful chemicals from all africology products. We do not use synthetic colours or fragrances. We avoid ingredients derived from petrochemicals and ingredients that can mimic xenoestrogens. Bringing ancient wisdom to today’s world By honouring the traditional wisdom from our countries healers, and personal interaction with healers, we encapsulate this into africology.

5

OUR VISION

It is our wish to see the Africology brand expand its local success to the world’s most beautiful cities. No matter where in the world you are, there is a little bit of Africa within you – this is our slogan, and we see it adorned in all of our Africology retail stores worldwide. Our retail stores and branded spas are in much demand, so much so that the rollout of more retail stores is planned for 2016. Our brand is created with consciousness, and we know that when a guest uses Africology, an exceptional experience is had. Today we are South Africa’s leading skincare & spa brand. Tomorrow we know we will become a leading retail brand worldwide. It is our goal to co-create with hospitality brands that contribute to the influx of tourism which enhances the African experience. In this we are able to contribute towards the development of our economy and our people. Our spa experience creates the wish to return to Africa once more.

6

OUR VALUES

Our passion for health and healing is the primary inspiration behind our creation of product ranges that are authentic in delivery. Although many new brands have copied us with the intention to be who we are, none have followed through with authenticity as Africology does. We don’t compromise safety by justifying an unsafe ingredient as a “wash off”, nor do we use any metal in our packaging, as we are aware of metal poisoning. We don’t say we don’t use a preservative, as common sense knows that no fresh produce will stay fresh for over a week, nor does a formulation. Neither do we fool the public by saying essential oils will preserve our product on its own. We are responsible and accountable, and so seek preservatives that are eco certified. We don’t use the anti-animal cruelty bunny logo - why would we when we know it is deceitful and mostly a lie? This bunny logo is placed on all SA-produced products that contain ingredients that were cruelly tested on animals. It’s not the final product that matters, but what is in the product that matters most. It is our choice to develop human potential, and play a significant role in the development of our country’s future. Our mission is to offer authentically African cosmetics & spa experiences in line with and if not superior to that of international counterparts.

7

GEARING FOR GROWTH

Our amenities range can be likened to a spa treatment in the room, and goes beyond simple amenities. In September 2014 Africology embarked on its “gearing for growth programme” (GGP) with an ultimate goal of increasing production outputs whilst ensuring quality control and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice). The programme has since achieved milestones including (but not limited to); increasing warehousing by 4000 square metres, increasing manufacturing staffing levels by 25%, introducing state of the art machinery and lab equipment (over and above current equipment & machinery). increasing raw material stock pile by 50%+. These milestones all form part of an underlying objective of increasing production output by 65% within the second quarter of 2016. It is our pleasure to announce that as of 2017 these growth measures have been met and Africology is currently in its second phase of growth whereby initial objectives are increased by a further 25%.

AFRICOLOGY IN BUSINESS

Africology is fast growing into a well-respected international brand. It was established in South Africa in 2000 and since then has been focusing on creating intuitive formulations. It has become a South African leader in the fields of natural indigenous skincare, and bath and body products. We always seek out new ingredients and formulate wonderfully complementary aromas, evoking the true essence of Africa. Africology is acutely aware of global and environmental issues impacting on our planet today, which enables us as a business to support our community. Bearing this in mind:

• We recycle where possible. Glass is the most effectively recycled packaging • PET Packaging (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is the material of choice at Africology for some of our bottles because it is lightweight, shatter-resistant and provides very good oxygen and moisture barriers for our formulations and is recyclable. PET has been extensively tested for its safety and we prefer to use it for our packaging. • We aim to grow more of our own organic produce. • We always seek opportunities to develop potential in women who are underprivileged by teaching them massage and product protocols so that they can work in spas and provide income for their families.

10

OUR VISION

CARBON FOOTPRINT When Africology formulates its therapeutic range of products, much consideration is given to the selection of raw materials due to the impact it may have on the environment. Its gas emission effect on the environment via transport, storage and the imprint it has on human biology is considered and avoided where necessary. By stocking Africology, you significantly reduce your carbon footprint. SECONDARY IMPACT This is most important in the manufacturing process. Our energy policy protects the creation environment Y OG

in formulation choices. SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION The disposal of used water in alignment with the Africology product range has a positive history in the use of the brand in 5 star game lodges. These environments are restricted to beneficial wastage systems and are not allowed to harm the sensitive environment around them. Our selected ingredients are in alignment with international environmentally-conscious campaigns. Our products’ ability to decompose and beneficially participate in ecological growth factors is one of our key areas of expertise. Richard Branson’s Virgin properties are well known for their reed water recycling processes. The use of Africology in these properties has contributed positively to the enhancement of the purification process in alignment with earth-friendly processes. For this reason we don’t prescribe to major brands accommodating a “wash off” offensive ingredient as acceptable. It is irresponsible, as the eco-supply renewal chain is very dependent on first instance formulating choices. It is the responsible selection of safe ingredients that will support the biology and earth equally. 11

OUR VISION

Our activities – impact carbon foot print Over the years, we have given thought to the viability of opening offices in various provinces, versus distributing directly to stockists. Taking into consideration the cost of office operations and the carbon footprint thereof, versus a direct flight and door to door delivery, we concluded that one central distribution point eliminates excessive gas emissions. By selecting local actives in formulations, we reduce our carbon footprint drastically. By avoiding chemicals commonly used in amenities, we also eliminate toxic emission in the manufacturing of such ingredients. OUR ENERGY POLICY We control emissions by reducing domestic greenhouse gas emission in our entire operation. Our company is supported by LED light systems. By continuously monitoring our emissions due to manufacturing machinery and the elimination of chemicals from our products, we reduce our emission by 80%. A HEALTHY BODY AND MIND RESULTS IN A HAPPY HUMAN BEING WITH POSITIVE OUTCOMES.

development. We are the only South African brand that formulates holistically in accordance with international outreach organizations that are focused on the truth in cosmetics. Our raw material selection complies with regulations for soil health and sustainability, coupled with economic development and community upliftment. Our research and development team are abreast of international trends in ecopreservation and biologicallyaligned actives. Our passion is the healing arts, and with this, our focus is motivated on rituals and journeys. that are truly divine in their outcome. We know that a room amenity is as important as a duvet or pillow of exceptional standards. The bathroom is the one space the traveler always retires to rejuvenate and let go of the day’s stresses. Our amenities are in alignment with these needs. Our brand identity becomes a luxury offering, one the traveler would have spent much money to obtain, yet in this instance it is a gift.

AFRICOLOGY SOIL

Social Upliftment, Creating a defined connection with guests. With a passion for healing with essential oils in her treatments and formulations, Renchia Droganis is known for creating beautiful fragrances. With scent adorning all Africology spas and stores, our guests have desired our fragrance for their own homes. We bring you to Renchia’s place of play, where she grows lavender and roses on the family’s smallholding in Knysna, to celebrate her blending of exquisite fragrance combinations. Both her daughter and son Eliana and Christos have developed the ability to create gorgeous fragrances. Now named Africology Soil, in gratitude for all that is given, we know that in sharing there is more to receive. We have set up a company for our property manager Daniel and his wife, Riana. It is now time to serve in return by establishing an essential oil distillery on the property. Wealth creation for us both; when we purchase our oils from them, we know that the intention of the product is enhanced with goodwill.

Skills Transfer project is designed to teach under

privileged men and women Africology therapy and retail protocols so that they can work in and someday own their own salon or spa. This is a much more lasting and rewarding contribution to the community than just donating money, as it is turned into a vital tool to empower someone, and also their family, through increased income. Since inception africology has succesfully trained over 100 previously disadvantaged women in the art of massage.

AMENITY STRATEGY

Travellers are becoming more and more informed when it comes to ingredients and beauty trends, and it is imperative for a hotel to offer their clients an amenities range that is both green and luxurious. Our amenities range can be likened to a spa treatment in the room, and goes beyond simple amenities. It becomes a highlight of the stay, and remains with the guest long after their visit, reflecting well on the hotel and marking it as a thoughtful and well-appointed establishment. Our range was developed to meet a growing demand from spas that stocked us and who were part of an hotel establishment. We used our knowledge of spa-quality ingredients and treatments and created an amenities range that is the only one of its kind in South Africa. We offer the best chemical-free, dermatologically-tested and EU-certified products for hotel and spa usage in South Africa. The Africology amenities range is designed to support the spa range as well as the retail line, creating awareness and desire for both the hotel’s spa and the room in general. The range includes standard amenities such as shaving kits, shower caps and nail kits. We offer a full body range, which includes shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, disinfectant hand wash and soap. These are available in handy 50ml tubes as well as 100ml tubes and 200ml glass/plastic bottles. The latter are refillable from 5l drums of product. Should your hotel have a spa, it is a fantastic way to create awareness for the spa, as the client experiences the product in the room and then desires a full treatment. With the spa getting increased exposure and more bookings, the amenities range pays for itself. For hotels that do not have spas, the Africology amenities range adds to the prestige and desirability of the hotel through adding beautiful, deluxe detail to the room.

21

AMENITY STRATEGY

In 2008 Africology was privileged enough to have the opportunity to cater to Sir Richard Bransons first African property, Ulusaba. It is here that Richard Branson has endorsed our concept of inroom retail sales. By offering his guests sample sachet turndowns of our spa range, guests where offered a value added service but at the same time the sachet acted as a sampling initiative and guests were invited to purchase full sized products or travel sized products to take home as gifts or for their personal use. Needless to say that the initiative was a raving success, so much so that Virgin was able to repay its amenity room cost and in some cases make a profit. Richard Branson has since signed Africology on as Virgins exclusive spa and bathroom amenity brand for all of his African properties, including the recently acquired property Mont Rochelle in Franschoek, with a 3 year extension being signed at the end of July 2015. We would like to take this same principal and follow it through the Sun-Lux properties and by doing so generate income, recoup room set up costs and ultimately make a profit.

CORE AMENITIES

For the core product selection we have opted to offer tubes, either in black or white. Both options will have come with a flip top cap and the Africology insignia as well as product description (i.e. Hand & Body Wash) will be hot stamped with silver foil to pop the design, which is not commonly found on tube designs and will add an element of luxury. The tubes are all made from highly recyclable material whilst the design incorporates the Eco-Cert preservative logo, therefore boosting the environmentally friendly profile of the product. We have decided to opt for a tube design for a number of reasons. Firstly, our machinery upgrades within the factory lends itself to tubes and supports high volumes. Once the tubes are manufactured, they are secured with a tamperproof seal, which offers users peace of mind and is more hygienic. The tube design with the flip top is also very user-friendly and eliminates any fumbling in the shower or bath. Unlike bottle designs, tube designs offer the perception of more product and our design adds height to the product, which offers an aesthetically pleasing and neat appearance. Our tube designs are very prominent, yet subtle with an air of simplicity. We have found from experience that one of the most frustrating things guests experience is not being able to identify which product they are using: either the designs themselves are too cluttered and busy, or the font is not distinguishable or too small to read. The entire 30ml range is preserved with Geogard® which is an Eco-Certified preservative, is 100% biodegradable and is a perfect replacement for parabens. The range is free from synthetic perfumes or alcohol bases, and we make use of signature pure essential oil blends. The entire range makes use of (but is not limited to) African potato, rooibos, aloe ferox and kigelia.

BODY SCRUB

We blend walnut and marula shell powder to provide a gentle, chemical-free exfoliator. The scrub delivers sunflower oil, rich in linoleic acid, vitamins A, B complex, D and E, calcium, zinc, potassium, iron and phosphate into the skin. All of these contribute to the general wellbeing of the cell membrane. Aloe ferox extract and marula oil help to create a smooth, soft finish.

The South African landscape is immeasurably beautiful in its unspoiled grace and vastness. Our game lodges often overlook rivers and lakes where animals come to drink, to socialise, to live. There is no doubt that South Africa is a country that is rich in diversity and animal life. Because your beauty treatments should never harm the earth or animals, Africology has compiled a kit designed to make your stay amongst the acacia trees and the animals even more luxurious and cruelty-free.
