This building significantly evolves the seaside vacation house typology by dematerializing the notion of cellular space, burring the traditional regime of private and semi-private space and offering variant connection and refuge. The house is counterpointed by a freestanding elevated pool and subterranean entry court and garage clad in unhewn beach stone and Garapa. DIE PUNT Rooi Els, Overberg

Die Punt in Rooi Els is nothing short of spectacular… an insane design, slickly executed, its curved roof so sci-fi that from some angles one can easily imagine a spaceship has landed. And what a spot to land… surrounded by rocks and sea, commanding an incredible outlook over the entire peninsula, with simply beautiful views from every which way!

Its futuristic blueprint takes the experience of open-plan living to another level with fold-away glass doors allowing individual rooms to converge into a seamless space. Inside understated minimalism prevails, preventing any distraction from the glorious surrounds, ensuring Mother Nature remains the star attraction. Wrap-around cantilevered wooden decks hover above the land, and a knock-out lap pool stretches across an extended lower deck. Die Punt is also remarkably private, considering it is basically a glass box, with not a house in sight, just mountains, sea and sky.

The setting is the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, considered a registered conservancy tucked away in Rooi Els, a remote locale in the Overberg district situated just 5km from Pringle Bay. This little place offers a picturesque beach and is an excellent vantage point for whale watching. Since it has remained untouched over the years, it’s a birders paradise, too. Rock angling, crayfish diving and spearfishing are other popular play themes.

Die Punt, your 850-meter squared house on 10 500 square metres, overlooks False Bay. The architects & designers, Elphick Proome Interiors, were commissioned to capitalize on a unique concept, which the original owner shared as a sketch over lunch in Hermanus restaurant, so the story goes. Although the Atlantic Ocean views were a primary feature, the house was to be a minimal steel framed glass box with a hull-shaped hardwood clad roof to facilitate lookouts over the majestic mountainscapes that encircled it.
