This as-yet unspoilt spot in Mentawai in Indonesia is best kept a secret actually, as it has some of the most awesome surf spots, not to mention superbly stylish and comfortable accommodation in three thatched villas built in the traditional Mentawai style on a pristine beach bordered by untouched indigenous jungle. There are no roads, only footpaths, and it was the enchanting bamboo forest and mature mangoes, clove trees and sago palms that inspired the name … Leleu literally means ‘jungle’ in the local dialect.

Living here is about living simply, living close to nature. Leleu’s indoor-outdoor architectural style, with open walls and free air flow throughout its villas, is exactly what we all need on holiday – a laidback lifestyle where life slows down completely. So where are Leleu Boutique Beach Villas? Set right on the beach, this beautiful hideaway is on the little- known Mentawai islands, off Sipora island, reached via ferry from Padang in Indonesia. ‘The Mentawai islands are all about “frontier living”’, say the owners. ‘It’s one of the few remaining places like this on the planet.’ There are three villas, all powered by solar and with rainwater filtered for drinking, so it’s entirely offgrid and all about green living. Villa Isha is a little more luxurious as it has hot water, but Villa Akash and Villa Caydha have cold water only… after all, life here is about endless summer days and warm weather, even in winter!

‘The beauty of the area is all the exploring one can do,’ they say. ‘The swimming alone in front of Leleu is five-star. We are fortunate to have perfect conditions out front uninhibited by shallow coral, which is the case for the majority of establishments. Great snorkelling is everywhere and abundant. Swim and snorkel in the pristine, gin-clear mangroves. Go spearfishing and fishing. Go Island and jungle exploring. For avid surfers, there are 10 breaks of various quality and level of ability, all of which are about 5-30 minutes away by boat. Explore the majestical waters and visual splendour of Satan Island. Experience local Mentawai food created by the locals on Simikikang. You have your own boat and driver to explore ….or just lie in a hammock and read your book all day. The choice is yours!’
