TREKOSKRAAL FARM

West Coast, Western Cape

Searching for a stretch of coastline to build a beautiful eco-lodge within the magical two-hour radius of Cape Town? Look no further than this once-ina-lifetime opportunity on the West Coast, just six kilometres south of Paternoster as the crow flies, but north of Gonnemanskraal near Jacob’s Bay, and west of the farming town of Vredenburg. Imagine beautiful, protected coves set along a wild and undulating shoreline backed by coastal dune with never-ending views north and south. Come springtime, the Cape’s flower season brings a riot of colour to its shores and whales can be spotted offshore, while botanical enthusiasts enjoy the coastal hiking trail on a route from Paternoster through Cape Columbine Nature Reserve and down through Trekoskraal to Jacob’s Bay.

With 12kms of coastline and eight gorgeous beaches and coves, you could be forgiven for thinking you are somewhere remote in Greece or even on the Dalmatian Coast. But you’d be hard pressed to find 1 581 untouched hectares of farmland bordering coastline in Europe that matches this slice of heaven. Trekoskraal Farm has been owned by the same family for several generations but has seen no development recently.

The few existing outbuildings that exist need repair and there is evidence of potato farming on level areas in the past, but soil is sandy, and it has fairly gentle slopes across the whole property. The land has a north-to-south dune ridge in the middle, forming a ridge slope to the east down to the sea and hiding the larger portion of the property from views of Vredenburg. Access is via the Vredenburg to Paternoster tar road, and the last part is a 6km dirt road which is currently in good condition. The farm is close to Eskom power supply, if needed, however there’s no shortage of sunshine along this coastline for solar. A public proclaimed road exists and runs over a small portion of the property and a 4x4 is required for access to some areas.

There is potential to build an environmentally sensitive lodge or merely take on the land as a legacy investment for family to enjoy for years to come. Beautiful vantage points over wind-protected white sandy beaches have been identified and would be ideally suited to beach houses built in the traditional vernacular of the area using stone, wood and thatch, similar to those in nearby Groot Paternoster Private Nature Reserve. Imagine a life lived simply here: totally off-grid, with wild walks to enjoy, endless swims in aquamarine waters along untouched sandy beaches, prolific bird life, dolphins frolicking out to sea… all this and more could be yours.

Trekoskraal Farm deserves a caring custodian who will take care of its precious shoreline, dunes, flora and fauna, a visionary who sees the potential in preserving the natural heritage and extraordinary beauty of the area.
