GREATER MAKALALI NATURE RESERVE, HOEDSPRUIT
This property is 640 hectares in size and the Lodge footprint is set along the banks of the beautiful Makhutswi River. The property forms part of the Greater Makalali Nature Reserve, which is home to Africa’s iconic Big Five and there is 20,000 hectares of pristine game drive traverse.
The area hosts many animal species in its diverse habitat including Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Black and White Rhino, Spotted and Brown Hyena, Cheetah and Wild Dogs.
The entire reserve, with an area of 212 kilometres2, is fenced. In 1994 a game reintroduction program of endangered species and species previously extinct to the area commenced. This was part of the first-ever relocation of intact family groups of adult elephants from the Kruger National Park. In 1995, spotted hyenas, hippos, and white rhinos were also relocated onto the property and the following year cheetahs came back to the area. In 1995 five lions were reintroduced.
The area currently hosts all the game species previously indigenous to the area, with the exception of roan and sable antelope. A disease-free buffalo breeding project has commenced, bringing the species back after an absence of more than 50 years. Large mammal species including the ‘Big Five’ – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo occur.
The homestead is set amongst large riverine trees and has an elevated vantage point alongside the Makhutswi River. This property has commercial approval in place for ten bed rights, and so potential for anyone looking to invest in the tourism sector. The main house has two en-suite bedrooms, spacious open plan living area, and magnificent kitchen with a large fireplace that was part of the original homestead before being renovated. The bedrooms as well as the living area all open up onto a covered deck surrounded by iconic riverine trees with great views.
There are three separate en-suite guest chalets set in a tranquil garden, each has a covered patio; two overlook the refreshing swimming pool and the third has views over the dry riverbed and bush surrounds. Additional infrastructure includes, laundry facility, potential employee accommodation, three boreholes, two of which are functional, large covered carport and indigenous garden that is surrounded by an electrified fence with sliding gate and water hole linked to solar borehole.
This property is owner managed and has the added advantage of a portion that is currently leased out. This generates a set income each month of R 20,000.00 and is certainly an added advantage for any prospective buyer. The leased section is not close to the main Lodge, and has a mobiletented camp setup by the Lessee that is used as a training facility.
