CHAYNOUQUA PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE

Walker Bay, Western Cape

This private hideaway is set in 60ha of pristine fynbos along the rugged Cape Coastline offering magnificent views over the Walker Bay Nature Reserve and ocean and mountains, thanks to the slight elevation of the land, and offers extraordinary opportunity. Just opposite the Bay of Hermanus, one of the best whale watching destinations in the world, this exclusive beach makes the experience all the more unique. The Southern Right whales migrate to this Bay from the Antarctic around June for mating and breeding and the area has been recognised by the World Wildlife Fund. Apart from the natural wonders, the region offers a fantastic blend of activities that will appeal to outdoor lovers and culinary enthusiasts. Despite being a top tourist destination the region has kept its rustic charm and atmosphere.

The property includes high levels of diversity and is home to a population of the locally endemic Erica irregularis, which is only found between Gansbaai and Stanford. The property was formally declared as a private nature reserve in 1995 and is currently undergoing the validation and verification process to ensure it complies with the new ordinance regarding nature reserves which came into play in 2002.

The Grootbos Foundation Conservation and Research team conducted a bioblitz survey on the property in May 2023 and the results from the survey are as follows:

- 67 plant species, of which 5 are of conservation concern;

- 13 larger mammal species detected through movement sensitive camera traps within the area;

- 54 different morphospecies of insects;

- 9 herpetofauna species
