OnFITNESS

By: Scott Keppel

F

itness myths get started because we all respond to diet and exercise differently. Thus, the diet or workout plan that is working fabulously for your friend, relative, etc. may not produce results for you. This is why it is important to consult with a fitness professional before starting a program. One should also obtain clearance from their physician. I know you are really excited to begin your New Year’s diet and workout program and you are doing all of your research now to prepare, so I thought I would dispel a few myths on diet and exercise to steer you onward toward your fitness goals. To protect my knees, I should run on a treadmill? Running is a great form of cardiovascular exercise and while running on a treadmill is easier on one’s knees than pavement (the treadmill has some “give” to it where the ground doesn’t), running is generally quite stressful on your knees due to the high impact force placed on your body – and specifically your knees. Light running can place over twice the usual amount of pressure on one’s knees, hip joints, ankles, etc. This means a 130 pound woman may land on one foot with about 260 foot pounds of force. If you are having any pain or other issues you believe are due to your workouts, I suggest you have a certified personal trainer, running coach, or any other specialist check your running form to make sure it is proper before eliminating running completely. If an expert determines running is not the best form of cardio for you, some lower impact alternatives are: crosstrainers, stationary and road bikes, elipitilitcals, etc. Performing abdominal exercises will get rid of my belly? While performing abdominal movements are important to strengthen the muscle, they WILL NOT get rid of the excess fat on your stomach. The only

way to see your abdominal muscles is to lower your body fat percentage. Since you burn fat from within and not outside-in (the areas you have the most fat will be the last place you see changes), incorporating cardiovascular training, resistance training, and a healthy diet are THE ONLY WAY to lower your body fat percentage, decrease the fat you carry and possibly reveal the “six pack” you’ve been hiding.

It’s ok to train abs every day? Your abdominal muscles are just that; muscles, and as such just like any other muscle, your abs require time to recover. If you’re doing just a few reps here and there then it is ok to perform them daily. If, however, you are training them intensely - that is, performing multiple sets and reps for 10 minutes or longer - then you should allow at least a day to recover before working them again.

If I don’t sweat, I’m not working hard enough? Sweating is a way for your body to cool itself. Some individuals are prone to sweat more than others, so this is not necessarily a measure of how hard you are pushing yourself. Factors such as the foods you eat may also play a role in water retention and sweating.

If I want to tone up, I should do high reps and low weight? This is not necessarily true, as your diet and cardio programs will play large roles in the definition of your muscles. Lifting will shape what you have, but it is the diet and cardio that will burn the fat and allow for more definition to become visible. Again, remember we burn from within, so the places you store the most will be the last places to see. High reps will typically burn more calories than doing heavier weight and lower reps, but will not do much for building muscle. This is why it is important to manipulate your reps and sets and determine which body parts are stimulated with light weights and which body parts need to have heavier weight.

Machines are always safer than free weights? While machines are a great tool and tend to be easier and safer to use than free weights, if you are not properly aligned you can get hurt just as easily. If you can’t hire a personal trainer, take advantage of the trainers at your fitness facility and/or read the directions and diagram on the machines to learn what muscles you are working and how to adjust the settings for your height to avoid injury. If I am not sore the following day, I should work harder? DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) is not an accurate indicator of a workout. One should focus on acute muscle fatigue, that is either muscle failure or come close to failing at your desired rep range (i.e. if you are trying for 10 reps you should not be able to perform 15). The more rest you get, the more you stretch, along with consuming a proper diet will all contribute to recovering quicker and not being as sore. Don’t use muscle soreness as an indicator of an effective workout and don’t make it a goal to workout until you become sore.

In order to lose weight, I need to do hours of cardio and cut calories? This is not necessarily true, as you may be burning the candle at both ends. If you restrict your calories to an amount that is below your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) your metabolism can slow down and force your body to want to store fat. If you’re performing only cardio, you will not be building muscle which burns more calories than fat (1lb of muscle burns 20-100 kcal per day, and 1lb of fat burns only 8 calories per day). Most women should not eat less than 1200-1300 calories and most men should be around 1700-1800 calories a day. Contact me or another certified trainer and/or dietician to help you determine your daily caloric needs. Hope you get a jumpstart on your 2010 New Year’s Goals!

Playing with dolls has been a fun past time for little girls around the world for decades, yet there are still progressions being made in trying to produce dolls that resemble different cultures and races beyond your standard, Barbie™. Mattel, Inc. first introduced Barbie™ back in 1959. For over 50 years, they created a doll that has been the preferred doll of choice by many girls. However, in recent years other toy companies are giving the manufacturer a run for their money. Most of these companies understand the need for making the dolls with more diversity and selection … and consumers are responding to it. The first African American doll in the Barbie™ lineup, Christie, was introduced back in 1968 and the first actual black Barbie™ was introduced in 1980 but she had Caucasian features. Fast forwarding to 2009, the So In Style™ Barbie™ was created to be a more realistic version of African American girls as not previously done with earlier dolls. Even with the designer of the new dolls being an African American woman herself, the new Barbie™ has entered the market under mixed reviews. Although the dolls have more distinct features of that of the black culture, many are complaining the Barbies’™ manes do not. The hair on most of the dolls is straight and silky with few other options. Many are curious as to why none of them have others styles that represent the culture, such as braids or a kinkier texture of hair. The backlash reflects parents who do not want their little girls to get the image that in order to be beautiful you must have silky long flowing hair. Even more troubling for some, one of the accessories that you can purchase for the dolls is a hair straightener; again further sending the message that straight hair equals beauty. On the flip side of the criticism, there are many consumers that are praising the company for their efforts. Earlier versions of the black Barbie™ dolls were essentially Caucasian dolls painted brown with all of the same Caucasian features. The new So In Style™ models include a wider nose, fuller lips and more pronounced cheekbones. The dolls, named Grace, Kara and Tricelle, also come in varying complexions such as light brown, caramel and chocolate. They are also very career focused and goal-oriented, for example, Kara is interested in math and music. The biggest competitor for Barbie™ was the Bratz™ doll created in 2001. The Bratz™ line up included dolls of several different races including Asian and those with different hairstyles but in 2009, the company that created them was ordered by a court to cease and desist due to a lawsuit lost. They have since gone on to create a new doll under another name similar to the original and again reflecting different cultures. With that said, hopefully there will be change within not only Mattel, Inc. but other doll manufacturers to continue in making toys that little girls of all races can identify with.

ast month, I gave you some hints on proper etiquette for situations and dilemmas relating to this festive time of year. Now that you know how to handle those issues, do you know how to dazzle for the holiday parties and events? Ever wondered what it means when the invitation says something like “red carpet attire” or “upscale casual”? Don’t despair! I will help you decide what to wear! Here are a few ideas and suggestions.

The Office Party

If your usual work attire is conservative, then you don’t want to drift too far away from that look for the office party. A sparkly sweater would be great with a pair of nice pants. If you usually wear pumps, strappy sandals would be a fun substitute. If you stick to subtle colors on a regular basis, then what about adding a bright blouse in a pretty shade of red? Color adds a festive look with ease. For guys, a good looking sweater would also be appropriate in a bold color. If you usually sport a suit to the office, then add a holiday tie with a fun theme.

A Cocktail Party

The Cocktail Party offers numerous attire options. The little back dress is only one choice. This season jumpsuits are really in, and a basic one can be dressed up with accessories and high heels. This is also a great year for sequins. Black satin skirts or pants are the perfect bottoms paired with a fun sequin top which you can find at discount stores for very reasonable prices. You don’t have to spend a fortune to sport a stunning look. For men, a sport coat is plenty dressy and by opting for a dark one, it will be versatile for so many different occasions.

Black Tie Events

When an invitation states “black tie,” you can expect to see tuxedos and long dresses at the affair, as this is the most formal of all party dressing. A sport coat and even a suit would not be appropriate and neither would a short skirt or dress.

Holiday Open Houses

This is usually a drop-in type of function and offers the opportunity to wear that holiday sweater you have stowed away in the back of your closet. Slacks are usually fine with a pretty top. A savvy look right now is dressy jeans paired with a stylish leather jacket. You will turn heads as you enter a room.

New Year’s Eve Bash

For New Years Eve celebrations, just about anything goes! For the most part, you can break out your most exciting pieces and have lots of fun with what to wear. If you want to dress up, you can do so without ever looking too made up. This is the perfect occasion to wear bold and sparkly accessories.

Church Christmas Celebration

In general, your attire for religious celebrations should be a little more conservative. That doesn’t mean stuffy, just a little more tailored. Stay away from low necklines, short hemlines and very sheer fabrics.

Home Dinner Parties

You can usually decide what to wear to a home dinner party by considering the personality and home of the hostess. Casual wear is very appropriate; however, if she likes to dress trendy and has a flair for fashion, the dress code for the evening would be dressy and spicy. If the hostess is very casual or conservative, the dress will be more casual, too. Something simple, such as nice pants and a sweater would probably be just right. If you are invited to an event and are unsure of the appropriate attire, call the host, venue or organization throwing the event. When in doubt, always call. Also, keep in mind that it is better to be overdressed than underdressed.

clean, strong and well-functioning colon is essential to maintaining optimal health ... while a clogged, weak and poorly-functioning colon is a breeding ground for disease, sickness and death. Serious health problems can arise if the colon is not properly cared for, and based on the statistics, colon health care in this country has been woefully neglected. In the United States alone, over 400 million dollars is spent annually on laxatives. This year, an estimated 130,000 new cases of colon and rectal cancer will be diagnosed, making it the fourth most common form of cancer in Americans. Of this population, approximately 44% will die as a result of the disease. Colon cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States, second only to lung cancer in men, and breast cancer in women. At least two million Americans suffer other colon-related diseases, including colitis, ileitis, diverticulitis and approximately 100,000 colostomy surgeries are performed each year! Optimal colon health is as much a function of the quality of food we eat, as it is our elimination status. The typical American diet comprised of refined, processed foods high in saturated fats, sugar, flour, preservatives and low in fiber, inevitably causes trouble for the colon. Over time, the colon will lose the ability to process vital nutrients, absorb water and eliminate fecal matter from the body ... a condition also known as ‘constipation.’ Constipation is commonly identified as the state where fecal matter is so tightly packed together that bowel movements are infrequent, with difficulty and much straining. But you might be shocked to learn that you may be constipated without even recognizing the condition with the typical symptoms just listed! In this case, old hardened feces stick to the walls of the colon so greatly that the passage

through which the feces are forced to travel is significantly reduced and stools actually narrow in diameter. In this society, bowel movement of the chronically constipated may be looked upon as ‘normal’ stool! Most people have no idea how much old, hardened fecal matter is lodged within their colons. Many experts believe that the average person has five to 20 pounds of accumulated waste matter in their colon. While not a weight loss procedure, it is interesting to note that many people who complete a series of colon hydrotherapy sessions, often report significant weight losses. Bowel Toxemia is a problem caused by years of buildup of waste material – impacted feces, bacteria, fungi, viruses, dead cellular tissue, accumulated mucous, parasites and worms on the colon walls. This condition can inhibit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements, constipation, inflammation and very serious systemic disease. For example, these poisons can impair normal liver, lung and kidney function, leaving you feeling tired, ill and weak almost constantly. The health problems identified in this article may be reduced or eliminated entirely by maintaining a high fiber diet, using a good herbal intestinal cleanse and regular colon hydrotherapy treatments.

If you are experiencing a colon-related health problem, schedule a consultation with me to discuss how these can issues can be improved through colon hydrotherapy. Maintaining a healthy, strong functioning colon is vital to living a long, vibrant and healthy life!

Colon toxicity can be the underlying cause of many of these commonly reported health problems and may indicate the need for colon hydrotherapy: • Constipation

• Depression

• Backaches • Diarrhea

• Frequent Colds

• Skin Problems

• Food Cravings

• Irritability

• Hemorrhoids

• Obesity

• Allergies

• Insomnia

• Bad Breath

• Headaches

• Asthma

• Arthritis

• Prostate Trouble

• Distended Abdomen • Chronic Fatigue

• Hypoglycemia • Abdominal Gas

Chinese Medicine is thousands of years old and practitioners use acupuncture, bodywork, and herbs to bring the body into balance. The stomach is an organ that will almost always be addressed in an acupuncture treatment because of its importance to overall health. Since ancient times, Chinese Medical Doctors have been discussing the vital role that the stomach plays in wellness. “Stomach qi is the nourishment of life itself, if the stomach is weak, life will be unhealthy,” explained a physician from the Ming Dynasty, Zhang Jie Bin. This organ may seem simple, but the functions are extremely important to a long and healthy life. As similar to Western Medical views, in Chinese Medicine, the stomach is charged with breaking down and distributing ingested nutrients. The stomach is not only responsible for “rotting and ripening” food substance, the vital energy in the stomach is meant to go down. Someone who has a weak stomach will have frequent nausea, heartburn and indigestion. The stomach can be thought of as a bubbling cauldron. The stronger the fire, the better the nutrients will be broken down. The stomach is also the origin of fluids. Because of the ability to separate and breakdown food, the stomach has the ability to draw fluids from the food, thus helping the entire body with hydration. An unbalanced stomach can lead to agitation, mental confusion, anxiety and vivid dreaming. As the stomach is likened to a fiery cauldron, it is important to respect its temperature by avoiding ice, ice cream and cold drinks. Drinking an iced beverage is like pouring ice water on a fire, causing the stomach to work much harder to break down food. Raw foods, such as vegetables and salads also force the stomach to overwork. Asian diet dictates warm or room-temperature drinks, warm cooked foods and plenty of soups, to ensure the stomach will be balanced, thus helping keep the entire body balanced. Chinese Medicine Flu Prevention Tip: Keep the back of the neck covered and warm to strengthen and protect the immune system. In Chinese Medicine, conditions such as the common cold, flu and headache enter through the meridians on the back of the neck.

very day, roughly 6,000 women in the US reach menopause - the stage of life when a woman’s ovaries stop producing eggs and menstrual periods cease. According to U.S. Census data from 2000, there are about 37.5 million women entering or currently at menopause (ages 40 to 59). It’s estimated that in 2010, there will be approximately 50 million menopausal women in the United States! As recently as the 1980s, menopause was not something to be talked about, understood, or prepared for so much as it was to be endured. Women often suffered in silence through this inevitable transition period – called perimenopause. Luckily, our understanding of menopause and hormones has grown by leaps and bounds since then. We know more about the common symptoms that women experience, and we have better treatments to help them cope. We realize that the lifestyle habits that you maintain or adopt during this time of life can have a profound impact on your health and vitality in the future, especially when you consider that with today’s record-high life expectancies in the US, many women will live one-third or more of their life after menopause. The medical definition of menopause is for a woman to be menstruation-free for twelve straight months. However, surgery, such as a hysterectomy, can also induce early and sudden menopause and thus, the onset of menopausal symptoms. A better definition of menopause may be: persistent, unpleasant PMS-like symptoms, which can include mood swings, depression, anxiety, heart palpitations, nausea, loss of memory, difficulty concentrating, night sweats, insomnia, headaches, joint pain, hair loss, skin changes (dryness, thinning), acne, facial hair growth, decreased metabolism and weight gain, hot flashes, (night sweats or sleeping problems that lead to feeling tired, stressed or tense), vaginal changes (the vagina may become dry and thin and sex may be painful) and thinning of bones, which may lead to loss of height and bone breaks. Western medicine typically turns to synthetic hormone replacement therapy (HRT) given solely in a pill form. However, we know that when given orally, hormones need to be absorbed in the digestive tract, processed by the liver, and then enter the bloodstream, which may cause decreased levels of absorption, decreased levels of free hormone, and greater incidence of symptoms. Many women are unaware that synthetic hormones are not the only choice for balancing their hormones and alleviating unpleasant symptoms. Naturopathic physicians opt for bio-identical (“natural”) hormone replacement therapy (nBHRT) and alternative routes of delivery, such as transdermal

(cream) and sublingual (under the tongue) forms. nBHRT, like its synthetic counterpart, requires a physician’s prescription, but the hormones differ in that nBHRT is derived from plants rather than chemicals. Synthetic formulations are manufactured by pharmaceutical companies and packaged into standard doses. Conversely, nBHRT is prescribed in doses unique to each individual patient and compounded (i.e., assembled) by a pharmacist. The variety of dosages available, including the alternate routes of administration, allows the physician to prescribe the most simple and effective hormone therapy for each patient.

The Naturopathic Approach Naturopathic Medicine is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability and Naturopathic Medical Doctors (NMDs) teach their patients to utilize diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and cutting-edge natural therapies to enhance their bodies’ ability to ward off and combat disease. NMDs craft personalized and comprehensive treatment plans that blend the best of modern medical science and traditional natural medical approaches to not only treat disease, but to also restore health. Steeped in traditional healing methods, principles and practices, naturopathic medicine focuses on holistic, proactive prevention and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment. NMDs treat all medical conditions and can provide both individual and family healthcare. Among the most common ailments they treat are allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer support, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. NMDs are licensed to utilize prescription drugs, although the emphasis of naturopathic medicine is the use of natural healing agents.

There has been a recent surge in demand for bioidentical hormones by women who have read popular books on the matter. It is important to realize that while there is much relief to be gained from HRT, it may not be appropriate for every woman. However, recent studies have shown that nBHRT may have significant benefits over conventional synthetic hormones. At our office, we try to address your

symptoms for relief but we never forget to treat the root of the problem. Many times that involves diet and lifestyle recommendations, and other times it may involve supplements, homeopathy, botanicals and other natural medicines to balance the body for optimal health. In the case of low hormone levels, often the adrenal gland (the gland that produces your stress-induced hormones) may need treatment. I find this to be a common factor among peri-menopausal women who are having major symptoms. The adrenal glands produce DHEA, the beginning hormone for the body to produce estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, etc., and it’s the main area where we continue to make hormones after menopause. Failing to address your life stressors may cause your body to fail to produce enough hormones, in turn causing negative symptoms. Most patients do well with adrenal gland support and nutritional changes WITHOUT having to take ANY hormones. Your physician should be carefully monitoring your hormone levels with blood work to ensure you stay in safe ranges while being treated. I have my patients retest every six months - as our bodies change, so does our need for therapy. It takes an INDIVUALIZED approach to best help our bodies glide through menopause. Not every woman has the same risk factors, absorption capabilities and needs; therefore, I am not a fan of a one-sizefits-all prescription of ANY kind … particularly with hormones. In American culture, menopause is treated like a disease because of common problems associated with the normal hormonal changes. It can, however, be a fresh phase of life. With an appropriate perspective of menopause, and the guidance of a trained, well-informed and sensitive practitioner, a woman can seize this opportunity this life transition provides to optimize her health and lifestyle in a proactive and preventative fashion.

G

amma Hydroxybutyric Acid, more commonly known as GHB, is a central nervous system sedative often referred to by other names such as “Grievous Bodily Harm,” “Liquid Ecstasy,” “Easy Lay” and “Fantasy” and is classified as one of several “predator” or “date rape” drugs. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, “Date Rape” is one of the fastest growing drugfacilitated, sexual assault crimes in America today. These drugs, used on both men and women, are also used to help people commit other crimes, like robbery and physical assault. There are many factors that make these drugs desirable to sexual predators. For example, GHB is virtually undetectable; it’s tasteless, odorless and colorless and can be easily slipped into drinks and food. It’s very fast acting and renders the victim unconscious but responsive with little or no memory of what happens while the drug is active in their system. GHB also make the victim act without inhibition, often in

a sexual or physically affectionate way. Like most drugs, date rape drugs render a person incapable of thinking clearly or of making appropriate decisions. This makes for a very passive victim; one who is still able to play a role in what is happening but who will have no clear memory of what happened after-the-fact. Without any memory of events the victim is often unaware that they have even been raped, and if they are aware or have suspicions, they make very poor witnesses. All traces of the drugs will leave the body within 72 hours of ingestion and are not found in any routine toxicology screen or blood test doctors and police have to be looking specifically for them and they have to look quickly! If you think you have been drugged and/or raped, call 911 or have a trusted friend take you to a hospital emergency room. Don’t urinate, douche, bathe, brush your teeth, wash your hands, change clothes, or eat or drink before you go. These things may give evidence of the rape.

GHB was once sold in health food stores as a performance enhancer for body builders because it was believed to stimulate the production of human growth hormone (HGH). In 1990, the FDA banned the use of GHB because of reports of severe, uncontrollable side effects. GHB, available as a liquid or a powder, can produce severe symptoms to include relaxation, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vision difficulties, loss of consciousness (black out), seizures, memory impairment, difficulty breathing, tremors, sweating, vomiting, decreased heart rate, dream-like feelings, coma, and even death. Overdose of GHB can occur quickly and can be fatal. In the U.S. since 1990, there have been 5,700 documented cases of GHB abuse and more than 30 reported sexual assaults and 65 deaths attributed to this drug.
