WE ARE THE TEAM!
“The Tuesday Club are synth punk pop at its catchiest if you’re thinking about Blondie and Roxy Music you’re on the right track... it’s infectious and uplifting” Vive
Dear Tuesday Clubbers and Pop Pickers!
Welcome to the SEPTEMBER/AUTUMN issue of In the Club Magazine.
Since we last spoke we’ve been mighty busy (as per), not only getting involved in some fab festival action (see pages 10-13) and demo recording - Andreas and the Wolf, The Tuesday Club and GAND (more of them in the future), we’ve also been really busy revamping our web presence. As you will see on pages 4-6 we’ve completely overhauled thisisthetuesdayclub.co.uk and finally designed ourselves a Perfect Pop site perfectpopco-op. co.uk - both sites have been put together by our design team at 8ecreative.co.uk who are (as we hit the digital presses) launching a fab new web design package exclusively for bands!
‘365 project.’ Their much anticipated ‘closing party’ will not only feature a set by the ‘RFs’, see the ‘premier’ of the Harkii Media 365 documentary, but it will then be rounded off with a good old knees up from local legends ‘The 88’ who feature actually two ‘RF’ guest ‘collaborators’
Matt Edmond and Martin Wakeling in their ranks.
In a band, need a website? Read more about it on page 07.
Not only have we been pounding the digital anvil (ooh!), we’ve also been putting the finishing touches to some top quality live dates. On the 16th September the Tuesday Club are headlining the 70s and 80s stage of the ‘Time Turn’ festival in Catherine Street, St.Albans for a big day of music heritage in our home town, then on 29th September we support 90s ‘Indie chart smashes’ Space at Harpenden Public Halls. (If anyone wants tickets please email me - andreasvanderbraindrain@gmail.com as I have them in hand and you won’t pay a booking fee!) It’s not only the ‘TCs’ who are in important gig action though, probably the top of them all in terms of significance for all at the PPCO is October 6th at The Barn, (behind The Horn) in Victoria Street, St.Albans, where Reverse Family bid farewell to their massive
Phew and all that doesn’t even touch on the forthcoming Andreas and The Wolf album, an exciting ‘triband’ remix project (slated for early 2019) and the ongoing rise of The Perfect Pop Radio show - presented by the aforementioned Andreas and The Beautiful Wolf - who ‘purvey’ not just 80s Post Punk classics, but also feature many of the important movers and shakers of tomorrow. Check page 14 of this issue for their very latest show!
Finally, as ever we send a great big thanks to all of you for sticking with us, liking, sharing, attending gigs and buying our material. We look forward to seeing you at a gig soon (hopefully Space! Or at the 365 finale). TTC Forever.

ART IS MAGIC A GREAT SUMMERS ACTION IN PICTURES!
By Brad WigglesworthBig thanks to Kev Saunders and his team for inviting The ‘TCs’ to play The Hertford Magical Mystery tour at the Hertford House Hotel and also for switiching our set with Reverse Family to allow us 45 mins! Big thanks to Brad Wigglesworth as ever for the fab pics, but also special mention to Samantha Perryman for not only taking pics but also saving the ‘TC’ Jacket that got left behind in the chaotic change over after the set!
Perfect Pop Co Op Radio is back: mixcloud.com/perfectpopcoop now hosted by Andreas and the Wolf, just click, follow and enjoy! Lots of exclusives, oldies and rarities and that’s the music not the band!
Andreas and the Wolf have been making radio shows for almost 7 years now, but this year is the first one that they’ve been let loose on unsupervised!
Presented in their own inimitable and bungled style, if you love Indie, indie dance, new wave, post punk, old school punk, vinyl and discovering new music, this has to be the show for you!
Their previous ‘work experience’ came under the ‘über professional’ eye of Jordan aka J-Rod TCfirst on Recharged Radio on their ‘Sound of the Suburbs’ show and then on The Tuesday Club’s - ‘Club Foot’ podcast*.
When the former* came to an end in 2015, it seemed the duo’s ‘radio days’ may have come to a premature end... But as 2018 dawned thankfully this was proved not be so! Always frustrated with the slow progress of ‘buzz creation’ A&W decided it was about
time they cranked up the turntable again and give the world a chance to hear their mix from the sizeable Perfect Pop Co-Op back catalogue: Andreas and The Wolf (The band), The Tuesday Club, The Bleeed, Reverse Family, The DODO, Suey Side Packed and Diamond Meadows, plus previous label Ponyland Records with The Scratch
This is not just an excuse to plunder their own musical heritage though, oh no, this eclectic show comes interspersed with both tracks that have influenced them over the years by established artists and also tracks by fellow ‘DIYers’, underground mavericks and tomorrows indie superstars. You gotta click this link and get yourself subscribed. The show comes out once a month and can be found on the:

The end is nigh
It's so hard to believe that after all this time we're on the verge of completing our project. It started on 1st January 2015, caused by tragedy in December 2014. Now, on Monday 24th September 2018 it will finally be out there in full for all to see and hear. Our thanks are as huge as this project to each and everyone of you who has supported 'us' and 'it' through out a truly turbulant time in our lives. We can't wait to see you at the Closing Party in October. We're just sorry there weren't enough tickets for a general release. #rf365

HERTFORD MUSICAL MYSTERY FESTIVAL...
Despite the chaos and sound issues, a Big thanks goes out to Kev Saunders and his team for inviting Reverse Family to play The Hertford Magical Mystery tour. Featuring amongst other things another, (final???) bizzare sighting of Dermot and Andreas Vanderbraindrain in the same room! Big thanks also goes out to another new member of the RF massive, Mr Paul Manzi - sitting in for us on Bass. Paul normally fullfils lead singer/guitarist duties in his many musical projects, but as The Minx’s intended, he stepped into the breach when Johnny V was rendered ‘on holiday’. Big thanks Brad Wigglesworth and Claire Hill for your pics
In the club Dislocated Flowers
Joining us in the club this month is Graham O’Brien, ‘head honcho’ at the excitingly cerebral and daringly psychedelic Dislocated Flowers, we were lucky enough to get Graham to do us a piece on his band in our Spring issue and are extremely grateful, that he’s now joined us In the Club too! Another band that Andreas and The Wolf feature regularly on their radio shows (featured directly after this article) so you should already be more than familiar, but if not check the links at the end of this interview
Hey Graham, welcome into ‘The Club’! A great big PPCO thanks for joining us...
Firstly, we are sitting in the cyber pub doing this interview, and it’s our round. What do you want to drink?
Pint of Hoegaarden and a double Vodka with tonic and plenty of ice please… cheeky I know but it gets the thoughts and voice flowing. I’ll get the next round in…
What was the last thing you heard/watched that was so good you had to tell someone about it?
Other than the Perfect Pop Co-oP Radio Show, Atom Collector Records or a Polish band I’m a fan of called The Bullseyes? Then it would be Blade Runner 2049.
What four items would you put in a time capsule?
Telecaster, chess set, The Master and Margarita and the video for ‘Pretty Vacant’.
What does Punk mean to you? Raw energy, inclusivity, freedom of expression, individuality, a lot of music/lyrics with a social conscience/message underpinning it and not simply about how wealthy you are and the lifestyle you lead. A whole back catalogue and contemporary body of good music plus a great look. No boundaries as anybody is welcome
to express themselves however they see fit given the main ethos is DIY and the artistic control that gives you.
If there had only ever been one, which and why. The Clash or The Sex Pistols? Sex Pistols. They are the original ground zero, there is no flab or filler in their musical output when John Lydon is the vocalist. Never Mind the Bollocks as your only LP is impossible to better. Plus, John has a sense of humour and would be a laugh to have a drink with…Joe would find it difficult to stop rabbiting on about the bloody Dialectic at all possible moments. It also meant John having the clout to create PiL…perhaps THE Post-Punk pioneers and a good idea.
If football is the current ‘rock &’roll (in terms of Superstar status), what do you think could or should be next big thing?
All manner of musicians being the new ‘Rock & Roll’ superstars again! For all of us who create music and not
Graham O’Brienthe huge Vampire Tech Platforms that are monopolising it as billion-dollar companies. The emphasis should be on a more equitable sharing of the money generated by us, the human element, and not the one-sided arrangements imposed by several of the Tech Vamps (Spotify being by far the most egregious) The vast majority of musicians get fleeced while the Vampires siphon off huge, huge profits. They seem even more avaricious than the record companies used to be that they seek to replace.
If you could be any character in a film, what film and who would it be?
Blade Runner and Roy Batty. Reasons; his lust for and appreciation of life, he looks so damn cool… and I would get to deliver what, for me, is the greatest dialogue in cinema history with the ‘Tears in Rain’ monologue.
You are now In The Club, but what club do you actually wish it was?
Well, it’s a good place to be…but as you’re asking. I did get to the Hacienda and a lot of great club nights as a student back in the late 80’s so I’d go for the original ‘Batcave’ in London. I had a great time as a Goth back then but never made it there as I was ‘geographically challenged’ by living in a sunny south coast seaside resort…hahaha.
Who’d be in your four-piece fantasy band?
Siouxsie Sioux – Vocals
Lou Reed – Guitar
Peter Hook – Bass Keith Moon - DrumsIf you had a time machine and could go back to any year in music, what would it be and why?
As I lived through 76-85 and have a real memory of those years it would be 1966. Motown was at its pomp…Dusty Springfield was a megastar with her own show featuring many great Soul artists… Psychedelia was flowering…and Tomorrow Never Knows was the last track on Revolver. It would be possible to see the Velvet Underground at the EPI, and Jimi Hendrix released Hey Joe… Plus I would have actually been able to see England win a World Cup hahahaha…
What question haven’t we asked you that you wish we had?
Why don’t you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Where’s the best place to find you on the internet? soundcloud.com

They Reap
This is the third year that Musicians Against Homelessness has helped bands raise awareness about the issue - and money, in the form of donations to Crisis.
Who Killed Nancy Johnson? Supported MAH the last couple of years by organising and playing gigs. This year they wanted to do something a bit different: a download single called They Reap.
The song is about the Tories, about the right to buy that sold off social housing without replacing it, and the way that ended up making wealthy people wealthier, and housing less affordable.
The band will donate all profits generated by the sale of the single and the related t-shirts to Crisis, to help their campaign to end homelessness.
The single will be recorded in the next few weeks and released on the 21st of September. You can pre-order it on the WKNJ Bandcamp page, wknancyj.bandcamp.com/music, and if you buy a They Reap t-shirt off that page you get the single when it’s released and a few little freebies chucked in.
If you’re a musician or a band or a DJ or a producer or whatever, you can also buy the stems of the recording. That will allow you to record your own parts, remix and generally slice it about, to make your own version of the song. You can then release it - as long as you give at least 10% of any proceeds to Crisis.
The t-shirts and the remix package are listed at: wknancyj.bandcamp.com/merch

ART IS MAGIC
Tuesday Club expanded See You Next Tuesday The Complete Sessions
7 years in, The Tuesday Club release an unlikely album 3 - Art is Magic. Literally half the band they started out as, now a 4 piece from the initial 8. From a hugely promising debut album - See you next Tuesday... they moved to their 2nd official release by way of a quadrilogy of 4 eps. Having played a fantastic promo tour for ep1 my consciousness, the TCs were literally rocked and almost derailed by the tragic death of drummer Terry Super Cockell, the subsequent releases were put out in a daze and not with a little help from dep drummers until the arrival of Current sticks man Blairski. The good ship ship
Rocked and tilted violetly following the penultimate ep release lady gargar and subsequent defection of Bass, vocals and guitars but somehow steadied leaving the current 4 piece to regroup and begin work on their ‘comeback’ - Art is Magic

This track is based on a cassette demo from the B-Wolf from the mid 1980s with new lyrics added by Andy.
Back in 1984 Wargames, the postpunk/new wave band B-Wolf was in, called it a day. But The Wolf carried on writing material for a new album for when he found a new band. He had a portastudio, a couple of guitars, a Casio CZ101 keyboard and a drum machine. As he can’t sing he ended up with a lot of instrumental demos. Fast forward 30 years and when clearing the attic he came across a box full of old cassettes and fancied giving them a listen…
He thought it would be an interesting project to revisit these tracks written by his twenty year old self. In some cases he had the original 4 tracks so he used these and added to them and in other cases where he only had a mixed down track he rerecorded everything. At the time he was influenced by the likes of Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Cure, Psychedelic Furs, The Banshees/Cure offshoot, The Glove, and Magazine.
THE DODO
The Dodo - The Album. Finally released in it’s full digital tragedy... Taking 3 weeks of evenings to produce in the autumn of the late late noughties... unplanned and adrenalised. It sounds more like a the soundtrack to Saint-Saens carnival of the animals transported to a lost autumn somewhere in a darker, richer, swinging 60’s... the 1860’s that is. Harpsichord, strings, bells, and tormented otherwordly backing vocals provide the backdrop to this feast of psychedelic melancholia laid bare to inspire and unhinge in equal measure. From the soaring yet forbidding, puritanical bleak, wailing, death mask procession of ‘Into the Black’, to the 60’s apple blossom infused cold war time bomb - ‘Waiting for the walls to come down. The DIY or DIE Organisation sound like a ghostly ice-cream van stalking the neighbourhoods of the as yet unwritten Tim Burton animation… ‘Gothic Pop Victoriana’. The DODO was born, it grew and ultimately demised, leaving this as it’s epitaph... Into the mists of time and tragedy it fades... the last Thylacine resplendent in a Tin Foil Crown.

Imagine Scrooge hadn’t had his dream and he’d carried on blissfully and corporatly crushing the spirit of his loyal workforce, this is Bob Cratchits revenge. Despite all the hardship Bob’s soul elevated his family to higher consciousness where they dispensed with traditon and used the foil for something alltogether more glam than a turkeys marathon runners blanket. Melancholic yet up lifting Tin Foil Crown is an anthem of Hope and fortitude against the odds!

REVERSE FAMILY
MY SONGS ABOUT LIFE MID CRISIS
Ever had that dream where an insect invades the ear and sets up home to mercilessly tease and torment thereon in? If so, a form of similar reality is about to be unleashed as the Reverse Family step forward to announce themselves with a sound which trespasses and festers in the psyche. The difference is that this is set to be the most welcome invasion of ears as it crawls with relish into the imagination.
Reverse Family is the solo project of Dermot Illogical, aided by a fluid band of collaborators from time to time, this debut offering is a lo-fi exploration into an experimental DIY web of sounds and flavours which is hard to pin down but certainly embraces everything from post punk and noise pop to indie and old school punk.
There are so many highlights offered by the Reverse Family songs; each track connecting with an ever eager hunger for punk fuelled, post punk spiced imagination. Plastic Punks epitomises this perfectly, its Fire Engines toned melodic jangle and Spizzenergi devilry sheer temptation again emerging as something specific to Reverse Family.
With a tongue in cheek lining to the lyrical reflection shaping songs which spreads into the music itself, Reverse Family is a beguiling adventure with a nod to the past and a grip on an imagination as fresh as it is, well quite simply a touch loco.
Ringmaster Review
"This loose and snazzy slinky strut has been leaked as a mooching club floor teaser as to whats to come. Time tunnelling its way from a new wave age to present day, this glam funked schizoid crooner is possessed of the kind of wayward outsider pop dialect that imagines odd popper Gary Wilson doing Adam Ant homages whilst shimmying up to a class of 1980 gathering of Jona Lewie and Robin Scott moonlighting as M types." losingtoday.com

BASS, HOW LOW CAN YOU GO!?...
I have a big love for music recorded in the late 60s and early 70s, back when studio time was expensive, facilities were basic and the boundaries were much closer than today and easier to push. The imperfections, the unintentional idiosyncrasies, the background noise are all parts of why I love the music that I love.
I’ve been playing bass for a long, long time, gigging and recording. I started off in a couple of highly creative bands with everyone writing all the time but gradually I ended up as a sideman, contributing nothing but the bottom end and just playing what other people asked me to.
For my own mental health I had to break myself out of that and get back into my own skin. When I was asked to contribute to a friend’s 365 project, I realised that a deadline

Come on Home (Neon Tetra Records : Out Now) is the brand new single from former BBC Scotland single of the week band The Filthy Tongues.

Back to Hell is the brand new studio album from one of Scotland’s finest bands, The Filthy Tongues. (Neon Tetra /Blokshok Records)
It follows on from a remarkable twelve months for the band, that saw their single Holy Brothers (taken from the 2016 album Jacobs Ladder) named as a Single of the Week on BBC Scotland’s Janice Forsyth show. The band are also one of the early bands to be announced for next years Rockaway Beach festival.

Back to Hell is a drippingly dark masterpiece from a band who were involved in the co-writing of four tracks on the latest Skids album. It takes us on a journey through the dank closes and stairwells of the Old Town in Edinburgh and all that goes with it. Delving deeper into the seething underbelly of the city with menace, gritty lyrics and claustrophobic soundscapes in spades. Repetitive blues-influenced grooves again form the bedrock around which edgy guitar, piano, organ and strings jag, stab and soar.
Lyrically it’s as enigmatic and gritty as ever while Susannah Clark’s haunting strings bring even more to the feast. The Ghost of Rab McVie mourns the gentrification of Leith and good times/bad times gone. Mother’s Got A Knife, where the corrupt patriarchy

gets its comeuppance, Carlos the Jackal and title track Back to Hell similarly continue the cinematic appeal of Jacob’s Ladder, just a rung or two higher. Think Bad Seeds in full swing or the soundtrack to a particularly tense Peaky Blinders climax.
The Filthy Tongues have occupied a unique place at the heart of Scottish alternative rock, in various manifestations, since the mid 80’s. Martin Metcalfe, Fin Wilson and Derek Kelly were the core-members of Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, a stunning live band with Metcalfe resembling the MC of a debauched, vaguely gothic cabaret, which effortlessly churned out pop classics, sinister dark Blues and full-blown stadium-fitting anthems.
The band regularly attract 5 star reviews and plays on BBC6 Music. The band also featured on the soundtrack to Skids frontman turned director, Richard Jobson’s New Town Killers film and caught the ear of Hollywood in David Mackenzie’s film Spread.

‘The most complex, fascinating musical footprint of any Scottish band yet’ -
“The Filthy Tongues had the crowd wrapped around their little fingers hanging on the every word” Ginger
“Brilliant, Iggy Pop’s Nightclubbing taken to a backwoods clearing for a pagan ritual- or something”

MY LATEST TOP BANDS, ARTISTS & EVENTS!
Hello pop pickers, how are you? I have to say been fairly quiet on The Parsons Knows front this last few weeks due to holidays and stuff, so I’ve been able to catch up on my reading – which is nice!
But seems local musicians have been busy as I have had lots of new releases sent through so looking forward to getting back behind the desk at Radio Verulam and showcasing some fantastic local music. Make sure you tune in Monday nights from 7pm!
I am very excited to be running an event for St Albans BID on 16/9 called ‘Time Turner’. We will be setting up in Catherine Street, near
the old ‘Pineapple’ pub for those of you who remember and its all about the 70s/80s! We have dance, DJ’s including yours truly & Eddie James from Empire Records doing a vinyl set, very exciting & off course some live music.
Travel back in time for some Glam Rock with ‘The Glam Gang’ specially reformed for this one off very interesting event. Dig out those platforms and get some glitter on! To top the event off we have the one & only The Tuesday Club to Punk things up & finish in style.
Dressing up is key to this event with shops and café’s all getting involved along Catherine Street. The road will be closed and displaying vintage cars too.
All starts at 11am so dress to impress and come join us. Other stages in St Albans featured a 1950s stage in St Peters Street & 1920’s in Holywell Hill so get involved and make a day of it! It’s going to huge amount of fun. For a change I will NOT be wearing a vintage style dress and will be reliving my teenage years – will I go Glam Rock, or will I go Punk – not sure yet! I remember both very well.

Back due to popular demand is ‘The Harey Open Mic’ on Wednesday 12th September after it’s August break. We will be back to hosting the most eclectic Open Mic in town now running on the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of the month (rather than every other Wednesday) so look out for some posters, flyers and banners around town and come & support your #Local.
My other exciting news concerns the release of a charity single with local artists. Steve Waner Folk comprising of Steve & Roly wrote this amazing song called ‘Checking Out’ about Dementia that really touched me & summed up in a song exactly how I was feeling about my Mum. So, plans are afoot. I got the guys to re record the song with Lauren Deakin Davies & we are planning a big release with video, just giving and more. Early days yet & just getting the plan together, so I will let you know more but if you know anyone, friend or family that is or has suffered with Dementia then you will understand the words and I am sure like me you will want to support this great cause.
Finally, here’s all my links, see you soon, Denise!
Thank you & Goodnight. x

Great things start with humble beginnings. What does Disney, Harley Davidson, Apple, Hewlett Packard, Google and Amazon all have in common? They all started with a great idea and a garage (can you guess who these garages belonged too? answers at the end).
That's what North Herts FM believe they have. Operating from a garage conversion at present but with a vision to be the best privately owned Community Radio station for the area. Run by and for the local community. In fact, North Herts FM is the ONLY truly local radio station in the area. Born out of frustration that "local" radio often means a global brand with some community content, inaccessible and expensive to get your event or business advertised and with little knowledge of the local community.

You would expect the need for radio was diminishing with other options such as Spotify, Amazon Prime and YouTube. But Online radio is actually growing by 37% year on year. The operators of the station believe that once 5g becomes available on smartphones next year, the need for DAB and FM coverage will diminish. Presently the most popular place to listen to radio is in the car and as data charges drop and speeds increase on mobile phones, online radio will replace the older ways of listening to the radio.

Local organisations such as Benslow Music in Hitchin and Henlow Bridge Lakes have been taking advantage of the free advertising being offered and organisations such as Garden House Hospice Care and The Cloisters have been using the events bulletins once an hour to advertise their forthcoming events. North Herts FM has also forged a collaboration with Hitchin Town Football Club to bring live football commentary when they play at home supplementing their Twitter coverage for those with disabilities who can't make it to the ground on match day.

Even after only 3 months on air, North Herts FM already has some very well supported shows including newcomer and first time presenter Melly Mel with her All Day Breakfast. Community Focus tells stories of inspirational local people. Paul Gray takes listeners through soul music with Soul Stew and Dave Miligan with Round at Milligans. Two shows support music both locally and Internationally with The International Unsigned Show and The Parsons Knows Local Music. With a Rock, Country and even Storytime for the kids, there's something for everyone and the schedule is still building.

If you’re into a catchy mixture of British Invasion, The Cramps, early Black Sabbath and a pinch of garage flavours, meet The Bullseyes. As straight-forward as a bullseye, Matt Jarzabek (drummer) and Darek Lukasik (guitarist) take turns singing lead and shoot it straight to the addictive part of your brain with their choruses.
This alt-rock duo started their 2017 debut with 3 singles, such as psychotic ‘Love’s Blow’, naively psychedelic ‘Regular Sky’, and a blues waltz called ‘Butterfly’. Constantly featured by alternative music blogs, magazines, and radio stations worldwide, their music is described as “palatable hard rock, with a punk spirit and a sense of fun that is often lacking in the genre”.
Here’s the video for their newest track “Yet There’s You” https://youtu.be/0S-6Xt8HdPk
“Flowers on the ground, birds are flying high, but there is always YOU, no matter how hard I try...” — One time after a very stressful day, Matt (vocalist) went for a bike ride to relieve the stress he was in. Unfortunately, he had his phone with him. This song was inspired by that one annoying thing that won’t leave your brain, even when you try so hard to zone out away from it. There was always “it”. “It” is ambiguous for each one to interpret. For Matt, “it” being the technology and endless notification flow that distracted him from supposedly enjoying the day, and that became the chorus of this new song by The Bullseyes.
