One of the units in the workshop examines the role of essential oils on our psyche via the olfactory pathway. Our sense of smell is fascinating – it can elicit long lost memories or evoke powerful emotions. There is still so much to learn about smell and its impact on our health and wellbeing. However, the latest research into olfaction and the psyche indicates that essential oils do influence the way we feel. Five element blends The cosmic cycle of birth, growth, harvest, death and renewal has been an important aspect of human experience. This cycle has formed the basis of rituals and myths for as long as human beings have told stories about the world and wondered about their relationship with the divine. steam inhalation

bath

The eyes should be kept shut during inhalation. Steam inhalations are a traditional home remedy to ease congestion in the respiratory passages caused by colds, coughs, catarrh and sinusitis.

Use a 2.5% dilution of the appropriate essential oil to the chosen carrier oil such as cold pressed sweet almond or apricot kernel oil. This is equal to approximately 5 drops to every 10mL of carrier oil. For a full body bath in a tub, use up to 5 drops of the appropriate essential oil in a tub of warm water. Foot or hand baths may be prepared by adding 2-3 drops of essential oil to a bowl of warm water.

compress

Compresses are very useful for the temporary relief of skin problems, bruises, muscular aches and period pain. Use 5 drops of essential oil in 200mL of hot or cold water depending on the condition. Place a cloth in the water and then wring out and lay over the affected area. Leave for up to 15 minutes.

direct inhalation

Add 3 - 4 drops of essential oil to a handkerchief, hold this near the nose for a few moments and inhale the vapours.

Add 5 drops of essential oil to a bowl of steaming water. Then, place a towel over your head and the bowl and inhale the vapours for a few minutes.

diffusion

Create the perfect ambience in your home, bedroom or workplace by diffusing your favourite essential oil or blend of oils in a diffuser. To use a candle diffuser place a small quantity of water in the small dish on top of the oil burner, then add 5-10 drops of essential oil. Light the candle and keep alight for approximately 15 to 30 minutes. Remember to never keep a burning object unattended and never allow the oil and water in the oil burner to dry out. When using an ultrasonic diffuser please follow the manufacturerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s instructions. Never overfill the diffuser with water as this may prevent it from working. All ultrasonic diffusers should have a maximum water level mark.

certified fair trade & organic olive oil Palestinian nabali olive oil, from the native olive tree of Palestine, is characterised by its distinct personality, robust aroma, and medium fruity flavour. It has a peppery bite and a hint of bitterness (a desirable trait) that disappears as the oil ages over time. Once you have tried olive oil from Palestine, most other olive oils appear bland by comparison. Nabali olive oil from Canaan Fair Trade is certified organic, cold pressed and certified fair trade. Olive Harvest Tapenade

½ cups green olives, pitted 3 tbsp nabali olive oil ¼ cup chopped parsley 1/3 sweet red bell pepper (seeded with ribs removed and chopped) ½ tsp black pepper 3 anchovy fillets (drained and mashed with a fork) 1 tbsp capers 2 cloves finely chopped garlic 1 tbsp fresh oregano finely chopped Coarsely chop the ingredients or blend in a food processor. Spoon over pieces of fresh bread or use as a dip.

Panzanella

1 crusty loaf of good quality bread (sliced in ½ inch slices) 3 to 5 ripe tomatoes, chopped 1 bunch rocket 1 can white (cannellini) beans (rinsed and drained) ½ bunch basil (chopped roughly) 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice or balsamic vinegar 120gm crumbled feta cheese ¼ to ½ cup nabali olive oil Salt and pepper to taste Preheat oven to 190°C. Pour ¼ cup olive oil on a flat plate. Dip each slice of bread into the oil to coat both sides and place slices on a baking tray. (Add more olive oil to the plate as needed.) Toast in the oven for about 10 to 15 minutes, until nicely browned. When the slices have cooled a bit, cut each slice into cubes. In a large salad bowl, toss the bread, chopped tomatoes, rocket, beans, and basil with the lemon juice or balsamic vinegar. Add the feta cheese and salt and pepper to taste. Add some more olive oil.

The exhibition was being held at the future site of Perfect Potion’s Kyoto shop. This was a big day for me. After meeting and speaking with Salvatore, he commissioned me to paint the “Four Seasons”. This was the beginning of a new friendship and then lead to further pieces such as “Five Elements”, “Sweet Dreams”, “Peace Perfume” and more. From working with Perfect Potion, I have learnt so much about them and the wonderful benefits of aromatherapy. About 14 years ago I moved to Brisbane and studied aromatherapy and other natural therapies. Before this I had worked as an artist in my hometown of Melbourne. Shortly after finishing my studies I started working for Perfect Potion. Firstly in their retail stores and then as visual merchandiser, although I have managed to do all things in between at some stage or another! Sal and Carolyn first became interested in my art when Perfect Potion held an art show at Metro Arts. They bought one of my paintings and shortly after commissioned me to illustrate the chakra blend kit box. I have continued to illustrate kit boxes, perfume boxes and the Perfect Potion Christmas Gift Boxes for the past 5 years. Sal, Carolyn and I have always worked well together and have always clicked and understood each other when it comes to designs.
