Matters of Life and Death is Performance Space’s program of international and Australian works exploring the ultimate driving force of life: our fear of death. These works offer a rich and unconventional collection of ideas about aging, longevity, ancestry, extinction and the anxieties of the living. You are invited to delve deep into the unknown and become intimately comfortable with ‘the other side’. So pack up your most primal fears and your brightest hopes, and join us for an inspiring three weeks of participatory performance, unsettling installations, contemporary dance, food preserving workshops, discussions about the great beyond, and much more!

“There is something about the simplicity of this show that is unbearably moving” The Guardian

You are invited to participate in a morbidly intimate dinner party for 39. Sitting around a dinner table in a Da Vinci-like mise-en-scène, be guided by three charming hosts in a compelling tale of real and imagined death scenarios. These include the untimely deaths of some of the most controversial celebrities, criminals, victims, heroes and not-so-famous individuals of our time. In between sipping your wine and witnessing people’s last words being literally eaten before your eyes, 13 audience members are treated to an unusual feast: the last meal requests of inmates on death row. Join us for this captivating, multi-sensory meal-performance; the ultimate toast to those bereft of life. Performance Anxiety was developed at Brisbane Powerhouse. Brian Lucas is supported by MAPS for Artists, a managing and producing program at Metro Arts.

Exploring his very personal fears of performing to all kinds of audiences, acclaimed performer/ choreographer Brian Lucas crafts a breathtaking dance theatre work about our collective anxieties. Take your seat in a Cabaret style setting as a Torch Singer, a War Correspondent, an Orator and a Stand-Up Comedian relate tales of torturous fear and dissatisfaction with their place in the modern world. On a stage in the Loser Bar, these characters will share their experiences of feeling terminally stressed and the struggle to perform well, be it in the boardroom, the bedroom or, quite plainly, in the supermarket checkout queue. Dance, movement, physical imagery, voice and sound combine in an ode to the little hero in all of us who insist on the day-to-day crusade of going on living in society. “UNSETTLING SUITE IS SARAH-JANE NORMAN’S MOST AMBITIOUS WORK TO DATE – FOLLOWING ON FROM HER INDIGESPACE RESIDENCY WITH PERFORMANCE SPACE LAST YEAR. UNSETTLING SUITE LIVES UP TO ITS NAME: IT WILL BE THOUGHTPROVOKING, INTRIGUING, AND ENTHRALLING – HISTORY WRITTEN ON BLOOD AND BONES”

“NIGHTTIME IS THE MOST POPULAR ONE-OFF EVENT PERFORMANCE SPACE HAS STAGED OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS. ALWAYS PRODUCED BY INDEPENDENT ARTIST CURATORS, THIS TIME THE SMALL ISSUES OF LIFE AND DEATH ARE CONCERNING FIRST-TIME NIGHTTIME CURATOR, EDDIE SHARP. IT’S BOUND TO BE A SCREAM”

JEFF KHAN

BEC DEAN

“One of Sydney’s most provocative and magnetic performance artists” Concrete Playground

Performance Space is delighted to present Sarah-Jane Norman’s most ambitious installation and performance project to date, bringing together her entire Unsettling Suite project into a dramatically charged exhibition and series of live performances. Unsettling Suite takes us into a dreamlike house, with translucent walls and an eerie interior glow. Each room plays host to an individual installation and performance, investigating the legacies of colonialism and their resonance through history into the present. Through works that are both beguiling and disturbing, Unsettling Suite explores the ways that Australia’s history of colonisation plays out on the body, and permeates the sphere of the personal. Norman is an artist of mixed British and Aboriginal descent, and Unsettling Suite is a powerfully personal work that speaks to broader historical truths about who we have been, and who we are.

‘Go and see everything Eddie Sharp puts his name to, you will not be disappointed’ The Brag

The fourteenth incarnation of this always-popular night of short works will ambitiously tackle life, death and everything in between. The cavernous space of Bay 17 will be transformed for one night only into a wonderland of installation, sound, colour and performance. Guest curated by Eddie Sharp, NightTime: Live and Let Die is sure to be a hilarious, chaotic and poignant moment in the Matters of Life and Death program. Eddie Sharp is one of Sydney’s finest cultural troubadours. He is the founder and director of The Imperial Panda Festival, Erotic Fan Fiction Readings, The Mad Max Remix and Some Film Museums I Have Known.

Market Day SAT 9 MAR 8AM-1PM $10 PER WORKSHOP SESSION Workshop venue, times and other details on website.

Performance Space is Australia’s leading agency for interdisciplinary arts, producing and presenting new artistic experiences across multiple sites, locations and venues. Performance Space forges exciting futures for contemporary art in Australia. Our Program focuses on innovative works that captivate and inspire audiences.

Making Time is an open kitchen laboratory where local participants are invited to share preserving techniques for a variety of foraged, native or backyard surplus foods through the traditional homebased crafts of pickling, jam making and bottling. This ongoing project seeks to generate interest in food security and non-institutional learning, investigating how food preservation techniques may be preserved and deployed in an impending age of unsettlement and urban adaptation.
